Hi Group! Trying to recover from another bad week -- my husband went for his treatment on Tuesday and routine lab tests showed that the Keytruda has wiped out his thyroid function. We were supposed to meet with a specialist on Friday, but the oncologist's nurse didn't get the information and now we have to wait until Wednesday of this coming week. Meanwhile, he is extremely tired, won't eat much, c/o being "cold", has episodes of confusion, and is having a different type of breathing problem. Tried to get results of any thyroid tests at his general practice doctor (should be routine when you get into your 60s) -- his family practice doctor had never done any tests. The V.A. where he goes for his diabetes care did a TSH in February that was within normal range. Our DIL made through all of her health work-ups -- she needs to have carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists. Our granddaughter with the inoperable brain tumor had another MRI test this week -- the tumor isn't growing, but her "diving lessons" caused more seizures. Some days I just can't deal with all of this, but I remember all of my hospice patients and their families and it gives me strength to stay strong. Will set up the August Chit Chat Café and be hopeful the new month is better than July!

Lennie, Thanks for the tip. I will look all that up. I did have some frankincense but used it all up. My daughter suggested Nancy's Yogurt, but I can't even disguise that to get him to eat some.

I drove through Corvallis on my way to visit a childhood friend who lives in Newport. What a wonderful place to grow up, hills, trees, the ocean not too far, anice little college town nearby. I do like sheep. Never thought much about them until I had the two lawn mowing katahdin's They had such great personalities. They were also haired sheep so they shed. People always thought they were goats.

Lovely time at the beach. My friend was my first best friend and I have known her and trusted her since we were five years old.

Greetings group -- We are having a blessed relief from the hot days of July. Got some thunderstorms and the temps dropped about 15 degrees. So glad not to have to water the lawn the last couple of days. My husband is feeling a bit better, but not doing much. I read more about the medication he is taking -- it doesn't prolong life much and the side effects right now are out-weighing the benefits. So much happening with our family -- two members looking for jobs (one is our son in N. California who had hoped to get back to work with the V.A. clinics in Redding, but may have to go back to doing contract work as an ER doctor); our local DIL is having tests to see if she needs surgery for severe reflux problems and also a damaged disc in her neck that is causing hand and finger numbness; and my sister's loss of nine of her aging animals in the last few months. The sister lives near Medford, Oregon. For about 20 years, she has rescued animals of all kinds. When she moved to Oregon from N. California, she took as many of her pets as she could (she had been the director of a "no kill" rescue group). One of her dogs has a cancerous tumor and she is using Frankincense to help him. The tumor has actually shrunk and he is in less pain. She says that you can buy the Boswellia extract from amazon.com. The dog she is using it on takes capsules and she also uses the essential oils of the Frankincense mixed with almond oil and applies it directly to the tumor. Maybe Buddy could benefit from it -- her dog is a lab. mix. My life is still involved with controlling the wood rats -- snakes are moving in to help and also a huge redtailed hawk. Not seeing as many signs of them lately. One snake (non-poisonous) has set up housekeeping on our front porch -- he is about 3 feet long. Due to the heat, there are cases of a rare horse disease again. There is immunization for it, but the horses need it all the time, not after they are sick. Nature seems to take control when things get "out of balance". Hope you are staying cool, eating well, having time to spend with your furry friends...

Hi Group -- Another "not so good week" at our house. My husband fell after his latest Keytruda infusion for his advanced lung cancer. The medicine makes him dizzy and very tired and also sick to his stomach. Trying to find something that he will eat is a challenge. He hurt his tailbone when he fell and also his left leg. He gets another CT scan soon, so will ask that the scan include the areas giving him pain. Sunny day and will be very hot and humid soon. Spend about an hour a day outside trying to keep up with bugs and mold and latest "critter" problems. The lawn-mowing guys hurried to mow and didn't use a grass-catcher. The wet grass really bothers my allergies and also people in the neighborhood are burning branches and leaves again. Finally got my car repaired from the wood rats "invasion" -- so far the damage to the garage and one vehicle is over $500.00. Yesterday a huge red-tailed hawk was in our patio, just sitting on the fence. Maybe he was looking for the critters. Also saw some snake skins in the yard, so my "natural workforce" is helping! My sister who lives in Weaverville, California and some of her family are taking their trailer to see our brother who is up near Dallas, Oregon. My niece, who has been living in Redding, CA, lost her job recently as a tax accountant. She would like to move to Oregon to be near her cousins -- now I have nieces in Salem, Oregon and Mt. Angel, Oregon and also Medford, Oregon (in addition to Dallas, Oregon). The best years of my life as a child were on the sheep farm near Corvallis, Oregon. Spent 10 years living there. Better get busy now fixing some meals and catching up on some bill-paying. Will share some articles soon from the Harvard Heart Letter. Got a year's subscription to their publication because they do good research...

I don't listen to audiobooks either because they put me to sleep. Mom always read to me before bed. Loved her soft voice. I think I pay about $9.00 a month to check out books on the kindle for the kindle unlimited and Library2go is free through our library. I prefer reading on the kindle because all books are large print and it doesn't have book mold or take up shelf space. However, libraries and books do make me very happy. I miss ordering the shelves of books and handling them, but that is all.

When I was on the cruise ship, I had no allergy problems Returned home and started sneezing as soon as I got off the ship in Seattle. Weather was perfect. Want to do it again despite the seasickness and land sickness.

Morning Group! We are still getting lots of rain in our area near the ocean. They finally decided that we aren't in drought conditions now. Did get my car to the electrician yesterday after the wood rats did the damage under the hood. The guy has had it for one whole day, but that doesn't mean he is working on it. Supposed to go to Olive Garden with our local son's family this evening, but my husband is feeling very yukky since his latest Keytruda infusion. May have to "pass" on the dinner and meet up with them next week. The dinner is to celebrate our local granddaughter's 12th birthday and the parents' 13th wedding anniversary. More rain predicted for later today. Very serious storm getting formed in the gulf area of Florida, but it is supposed to go West towards New Orleans. Since we are discussing books, I will recommend another female author that writes good books -- Debbie Macomber. Starting an older novel of hers (1993) called "Morning Comes Softly". This lady has more than 60 million books in print and some have been made into movies. She likes to write about angels, Christmas, star-struck love, and ranching. She lives in Washington State. Cathy, I have access to amazon.com books to "listen to", but I like to read. Have never really enjoyed having someone read to me! We have a very good local library that has about 150 large print books now. Will check out those other books you mentioned. Prayers for your dental situation -- I need lots of work done, but will just do my cleanings for now (every 3-4 months). Our budget is strained due to all the medical care and health needs of my spouse. Wishing you a good day and rest of the week. Hugs to the "puppies" and their various health problems. Still fighting "flea and grass allergies" with our dog. He is the best pet we have ever had and we would do anything to help him feel "top notch". Take care...

Hoping you get to make your move back this way. I would have liked to try Alaska too, except I have a hard enough time with the dark In Northern Oregon. Maybe a snow bird.

Bud got his stitches out and seems to be doing well. He is slower than he was, but he is older too.

I have read a lot of Nora Roberts and JD Robb too. She definitely has a formula for writing. I need to space her books out. I read about three and they all start sounding alike. I can't get her on kindle unlimited, but I could try Library2Go. At the moment I am reading Art Of Hearing Heartbeats. Well, I need to start it. It is a book club book. Been rereading my Overcoming Binge Eating book instead for the reminders. I talk to the Health Coach tomorrow. Doing pretty well on the program. Gained 2 pounds on the cruise and lost one of that since I have been back.

Dental cleaning today followed by my fourth dental consult for having that tooth pulled and replaced with an implant. Am being referred to Periodontist for pulling and implanting. Hoping that can be in same visit.

Hello to Mel-Roy from the team of Mixed Mutts. I just finished reading a J.D. Robb book entitled "Celebrity in Death" that she wrote in 2011. I didn't know that it was part of a "series" -- I just find books in large print and read them. She is really "Nora Roberts" who wrote her first book as J.D. Robb in 1995 (Naked in Death). The main character in the series is Eve Dallas, a detective with the New York City Police and Safety Department. J.D. or Nora is the number one New York Times best selling author of over 200 novels. As Nora Roberts, her books are usually in the "romance" genre. She writes very good novels and I probably have read 20 or 30.

Hi Group! Nice to read the posting and your blog, Cathy. We are still struggling with the heat, the wood rats, my husband's condition, and damage from two storms. No one would look at my car over the holiday -- finally got an appointment at an electrician who says he can do it on Wednesday. Meanwhile, tomorrow is another appointment at the oncology center for my husband. Shouldn't last too long -- just the infusion of the "biologic" -- the Keytruda. The storms tore off roofs in the area and damaged several buildings, including the shop where I get my hair cut. Had to go elsewhere today. Took a load of sticks and debris to the neighborhood "burn pile" from what was in our yard. The garbage company hauled off some of the mess today. Did not do anything for 4th of July. The neighbors did shoot off fireworks until late at night on Friday and Saturday that had the dog very upset. Got to see our grand-daughter yesterday at our house. We did some shopping for her birthday that is this week. She will be 12 years old. It will also be her parents' 13th wedding anniversary. They are going up to North Carolina for a short vacation this coming week-end. A tropical storm is developing in the "gulf" that may impact our weather here by Friday. Our Florida kids spent last week in the North Carolina mountains to camp and celebrate our DIL's parents' 55th wedding anniversary. Our 16 year old grandson is staying an additional week to do a training camp with his track team. Did watch the USA soccer players win their last two games. So much drama related to the playing. Not a fan of the player on our team with the pink hair who thinks she can spout her political opinions while she is playing. Our state is having lots of political activities since the democrats are here doing speeches/campaigning. Seems kinda early -- also a lot of crazy debates and discussions about the past. I am old enough to remember the civil rights situations and the death of President Kennedy -- I was in English class my junior year of high school when he got killed. Cathy -- I took that cruise to Alaska (from San Francisco) in May of 2000 with my sister-in-law and my in-laws. It was the last time I saw my mother-in-law (who was in the late stages of dementia). I really liked Juneau and Skagway. The weather was nice when we got to land, but the cruise was very bumpy and I was "seasick" while we were on the water. We almost moved to Alaska (from N. California) three times while my husband was in the Forest Service. Since he had trained to go to Vietnam in North Carolina, he decided to move us to this area, instead. Sometimes I wish we could have tried living in Alaska. We still have friends who live there now that are from this area (they send Christmas letters). I am tired of living in the South and really hope we can move back to Nevada this fall. That is my husband's wish, also, to spend his final days in his parents' house. Thanks for your postings -- love reading your comments!

Buddy squealed like a small pig when I came home from the cruise. At first he just blinked at me when I woke him up.Then the squealing started. I think it was a combination of telling me off for being gone so long and excitement that I was home.

Alaska is truly beautiful. Highly recommend Skagway. Would like to go back and spend a couple weeks there.

I went back to work today after a vacation of 9 days. I didn't go anywhere exotic, we just did "staycation" things and played tourist in our own area of Denver. My daughter is home for the summer from college so it was really fun to do so many things together as a family.
For the 4th, I am working, by choice, since it's time and a half pay for the holiday and is an easy day. I will be home in plenty of time for all of us to go to the nearby city park for all the fireworks and festivities. There is usually music, food trucks, vendors, a car show, etc.
As far as books go, I'm working my way through all of the JD Robb series In Death. I'm on book #14 but there is something like 50 of those books. I read pretty fast though.
Not much else going on really. My "mixed mutt" Cosmo will celebrate his 8th birthday at the end of this month. The years have really flown by since we got him as a puppy.

Just a quick note to say "hello". We have had a "heat index" of 105 degrees the last two days. Doing lots of watering of the lawn again, but wait until late afternoon. Watched the Womens' soccer match between the USA and England. Our team won again. They are off to the "semi-finals" now, but don't know who they will play next. Still trying to get the wood rat invasion under control -- they aren't coming as often or doing as much damage. Trying to get my car fixed since they damaged some of the wiring -- have an appointment tomorrow to have it inspected. Meanwhile our DIL got some type of virus and has been sick since the week-end. Always some problems to "overcome". Take care, post what you are doing for the holiday...

Greetings on the last day of June. Off to July for "chatting". How are you staying cool and what are you eating when it is too hot to cook? Lots of fresh fruit this time of year, which we enjoy. The bugs and birds have attacked the tomatoes, so have to purchase them in the stores. We try not to eat too much meat or fast food. Even the pets don't want to eat as much. Will share some articles from Womens' HEALTH that we now get as a magazine. Got several different subscriptions from school children selling magazines for their classes. It seems to be more for younger women, but there are recipes and exercise routines and skin care articles. Share what you are reading these days -- lots of good "beach books" out there this time of year.
