Sherry - Looks like a beautiful day if a hot and muggy one. It's been very hot and very humid here too. The feels like temperature has been consistently over 100 and this weekend I think the actual temperature was over 100.

I woke up and it was (not the middle of the night) morning! Chronic pain makes good sleep (not assisted by drugs) so rare it's always a pleasant surprise when it does happen.

Hi everyone,
I've been away from Spark for a couple of months now dealing with health issues and other types of misfortune but I wanted to come in the group and say hi to everybody and hopefully I'll be able to be more present here and get to know everyone again.
I've been able to maintain my weight loss during those months which is great but I am ready to start losing again and get to my goal.

Funny thing - after I posted that I went for an hour long walk at a good clip.
Monday was okay - Tuesday was kind of bad but not really - better than normal before I decided to stop killing myself with food. Today back on track - below calories and I worked out at gym (40 min bike).

I have not been exercising but I have been intentionally active. Busy weekend. I do plan on working out tomorrow.

My calories are creeping up to upper end of range. Candy sneaking into the mix. Yesterday I skipped my workout - today I was not feeling it but I worked out anyway - 35 minutes elliptical.

I not very disciplined - I give in to cravings and whims all the time - self control very shaky. Heck I''m lucky if I floss once a week.

Tomorrow my birthday - nothing planned as far as big meals or anything. Thursday my friends and I are going to the casino buffet. I will not pretend I have any chance of eating only salad items there. I hope to not let that lunch derail me and that I can be right back on track on Friday.

In response to the posts about self discipline and excuses...

I think first that a blanket statement about how we lack self discipline is inappropriate. I actually am very self disciplined in many areas of my life. Including my diet when I want to be. It isn't about discipline. It's about choices. I understand all of the 'excuses'. I myself have several medical conditions that all worked together to put me into a wheelchair about 10 years ago. What they don't tell you when your health begins to fail, is that your appetite doesn't! lol

I agree that circumstances and excuses are completely different. My circumstances make daily workouts an impossibility. I would literally die. My arteries are much too elastic, and one would explode. Do I use that as an excuse? No, I don't think so. I know I need to eat less because my caloric needs are less, I have been choosing for a long time not to though. I live in a house full of teenage eating machines. It's easy to snack on high calorie foods and spend the few moments a day they are willing to give me. Is that an excuse, I don't think so. It is a concious choice on my part to attempt to maintain the bond I have with my children.

In our society, most bonding occurrs around some ritual including food or drink. We have parties with food and cake for special occasions, we have big holiday 'todo's for every thing we can think of that's worth gathering for. Eating with other people is pretty much unavoidable. You can make better choices when you do it though...and there is no law anywhere that says you MUST eat everything on your plate. It's ok to choose not to eat any certain thing, and it's ok to choose to eat only half of what you are given.

It's also ok to choose to work out twice as hard because you want to choose to eat cake. Just like it is ok to choose not to work out if you are so tired from work that you want to cry. I think we have all made many choices over the years that have lead up to where we are now. Do outside influences effect our choices? you bet! But they are still our choices. Justification of them through excuses is irrelevant, but we do it anyway. It isn't because we lack self discipline though. It's because we are unhappy with the choice we made, and are seeking to validate it to ourselves...as much as to others.

Good for you Paul! I know how you feel! I went to a function and turned down cake yesterday. It wasn't easy to sit and watch everyone else eat it. I did taste the frosting...so I'm not completely pure, so don't go thinking I'm super woman. lol

I have started a diet based on blood type and genetic traits though, and two of the big no-nos for my type are wheat and dairy. That cuts out a really big chunk of my previous diet! I have been about 90% compliant with it though, and I have to say I feel some better! I think I will be sticking to it. Plus, I have lost at least 10 pounds in 3 weeks!

Being down 12 is awesome Paul! Good job on the cake too and the workout before it! Yeah I think I'd do what you did small dinner and then a small piece of cake with them. Why does it hurt people's (especially family) feelings to decline food? I've always wondered.

What to do when you parents call saying they bought a birthday cake and want you to come over for dessert later (actually dinner was included but I got out of that). I got in my gym clothes and went to the YMCA and burned 600 calories on the elliptical. Piece of cake - literally today - (exercise was really hard but the calories = about a piece of cake).

Had healthy dinner and went over to my parents. I had a normal size piece of cake with scoop of ice cream.

I am done around 12 pounds since I stopped with the excuses and started eating less and exercising more (3 weeks ago). My plan - to eat within calorie range per SparkPeople for someone my size trying to lose 2 pounds a week. Exercise almost daily and if I have a bad meal or birthday cake planned - extra workout. Hopefully I will keep this up and lose some of this weight.

When I said reasons I meant medical and circumstances. Not excuses. Yes. In general eating too many calories is the reason. I was talking medical problems that make it hard to exercise, or that affect your metabolism. or circumstances that make you short on time/energy/etc. I didn't mean using it as an excuse not to do better but your medical or situation might make it harder for you than other people.

I never meant to imply that we should latch on to excuses. It's too hard, I don't feel like it, I'm upset so yay cake, I'm tired, I love junk food, I'm lazy - those are excuses.

I work super long hours and am short on time and sleep - a circumstance that will make it harder for you than someone who doesn't have that issue but only an excuse if you use it to justify not trying or letting yourself off the hook for your bad habits.

I suffer from chronic pain, it can make exercise excruciating but only on my worst days do I use it as "an excuse" not to exercise. I try to do some every day and yeah some days I can't do as much as I'd like to or barely any. It's something that makes it harder for me to exercise than someone who doesn't have chronic pain.

I loved what one fitness person always said when someone said I don't have time to exercise. They'd always ask them how much tv they watch. This always upset them but he was pointing out that you have time you just don't want to use it doing that. That is an excuse.

There actually only 1 non medical reason for obesity and that is consuming more calories than warranted by one's lifestyle over an extended period of time.

There only 2 proven fixes that work - change ones lifestyle to increase calories needed to support it or consume fewer calories.

Eat less or / and exercise more.

It takes self discipline to control one's caloric intake and to exercise regularly.

Everyone has excuses and some sound good. I know a person who uses emotional eater. That's funny - he was in a good mood when you had that second piece of cheesecake at the buffet. Time - that's funny - you watch 4 hours of TV daily and do not have time to exercise. Addiction - not sure about this one. I have many excuses - I really like to eat bad food and have a hard time not eating it. I don't like spending time at the fitness center. I really like my recliner. My favorite excuse - It is too hard which is tied with I don't want to.
