Hi everyone,
My computer got infected, so I haven't been on much this last week. I did pretty well until today. I managed to walk every day, despite the heat and humidity. (Upper 90's)
Yesterday I wrenched my knee and pulled a muscle in my calf. I can still walk okay, but any deep contraction of the muscle (like climbing stairs) is brutal. Then, my son woke up with a 103 degree fever this morning. I feel like I've been totally thrown off track, and I'm having a difficult time. I keep gravatating toward the fridge, eating way too much of bad stuff... then I drift back to the computer, which is just another distraction. emoticon I need a kick in the pants.

Go Summer Sizzlers!

oh, vickie and i thought i had it bad
i really symathize i couldn't have stood that long in hospital.
i spent 10 days and thought i wasn't going to make it. i hate being in hospital. was so relieved to go home.
i got mesh put in and started to get infected got antibotics and lots of prayer from church family.

i have developed a pain on my left side comes and goes pain like from a bruise or sore not hurting pain doc sending me for cat scan tues. don't think it has to do with hernia
it comes and goes he mentioned diverticulitis which if i am careful, i can live with from what i read.

i understand about you not wanting to go under the knife any more.
surgean said best way for me to avoid a recurrence is of course lose weight.
which i am trying.

i lost 20 lbs during sick time
but have gained most back so now i am working on getting it back off.

Wow, Lee, it sounds as if we have several things in common. Like popcorn for one! I love it and eat it several times/wk.

The wound vac is what got my attention. In March 2002, I had a Roux-en-Y Gastroplasty done. 1 week in the hosp n then home for 1 wk n then life-flighted back to hospital for three mos. When I was returned to the hospital, the Dr. was very frightened and removed all my staples, re-opened the incision and flushed my innards w saline in the ER before taking me to the OR where necrotic tissue was removed and an attempt to stop the leaks was made. Odds were against me surviving about 99.5 to .5. (I am very stubborn!) Since I had no good tissue to rejoin (as you had none due to infection) a wound vac was used. I thought it was pretty cool. Seems they re-wrapped the wound every three days and I was fascinated to watch the difference in the healing of the wound in just 3 days! Yes it did take a long time to heal (and I got MRSA while there), but I wonder how long it would have taken w/o the machine! A tube is placed shallowly inside your wound and draws (vacuums) blood to the wound area to expedite the healing. It was a 2 1/2 hr drive for family and friends, so I did not have many visitors. 3 mos. is a long time in a hospital.

In 2005 I got really sick and almost croaked again. This time I had to have an emergency colostomy 1 Sun. afternoon. Nine mos. later when it was reversed (PTL)I also had a humongus abdominal hernia in which the surgeon implanted mesh (during the reversal) which also had to be removed due to infection. (3 more weeks in the hospital!) That must be a fairly common side effect. Do you now have to wear a binder, Lee? I do and it is so hot in the summertime! Another surgeon said he would do the surgery again but not until I get to 250. If I lose well, I've been pretty slow so far, I may be able to have it done in the Fall of 2009. 83 lbs to go!

Were you at your current weight when the attempt to repair your hernia was made? I am so afraid to undergo the knife again, but I know it is dangerous not to have a hernia fixed. It seems I always have to stay so long. When I had the colostomy done I was in the hospital 1 mo. n then to a nursing home for 3 mos. (Sepsis) I had to relearn to walk and move my limbs. See why I'm afraid to go under? Well, I haven't had to stay in the hospital for 3 yrs. now and I'm doing everything I need to do to adopt a new n permanent lifestyle.

Yikes I better get to bed! Good night all and sleep well!

I am SOO ready for the weight to go too! Sounds like we may be together for a long time! This is a good group so I don't mind at all. As I tell others, it took me 53 yrs to get here so . . .! emoticon

thanks linda for words of encouragment
i try to do exercise mostly upper body cause it hurts lol[yea, i know ] if i do much lower body
with the legs
i had a big time hernia operation [got infected ect on dec.3d 07 and got my last bandage off may 28th i had a machine called a wound vac to heal but was still slow. so doc said no exercise where i use my stomach muscles for a long time so i think i may be babying myself a little too much too. just a fear i have of a recurrence.
but as soon as i get a few more pounds off i know i will be able to do more.
i use the treadmill about 5 times a day cause right now i can only do about 5 min. at a time.
but i am going to try to add a min. each time each week. it is just slow going. i don't like to sweat lol
and don;t try to push past the pain but i realize i have to learn to do. and be better for it.

scotia
i am rooting for you to see a loss on saturday.
i know how you feel do good and nothing to show for it our bodies does strange things sometime
but take the words of linda to heart

we can do it!

The Sky Lab clients (from Work Out) all looked great and lost a lot of weight. Even Deenie ended up doing good:)

Lee - I love all the 98% fat free popcorn too. Sugar free frozen fruit bars are great, especially now that it's hot. I agree if it's not in the house it makes it easier.

I swear by the "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray" too, even when I'm off track. I haven't bought butter/margarine in years. (Shock of shocks:)

emoticon Betty - It gives us exercise haters hope, lol! Good job!

Lee - I'm sure you'll do just fine tomorrow. Have you thought about buying one of those personal size battery operated fans and or misters? I know how you feel, I've missed out on a lot too.

emoticon Linda! 35 lbs. lost! Awesome!

Dave's right! Everyone's success no matter how small we think it is, belongs to all of us. It shows us all that it CAN be done! So please brag away! :)

SCOTIACHICK - What happened? Did you lose your internet connection? Glad you're back!

Well I had a real bad binge yesterday after work, so much so that here it is almost 6pm and I'm still feeling sick from it. Even though it makes me sad I'm not being as hard on myself as I usually am. Progress I think, lol!

Lee,

You can do this...my lower back, hips, knees would "bark" at me all the time before I started SP and exercising a lot...they rarely bother me now. Before standing or walking for 10 minutes was about my maximum, so for exercise I use a recumbent bike (has a really nice back support). I mowed my lawn, which takes 90 minutes, and didn't have to stop and sit and "recover" once.

I have faith in you...you can do this. My words of wisdom track track track, and use the Team for any questions, good days, or bad days. Support is key.

Keep Sparking...

good job on your loss. bet you feel better with every pound gone. yea for you.

i feel like i did good this week will weigh in the morning.
i used to be a scale junkie lol on it a couple times a day then weaned my self to every am now trying once or twicw a week. but sometimes refert back to every day.

my daughter is graduating from nursing school [lpn]
tomorrow eve. the ceremony is in the old high school gym, no airconditioner, so they are setting up big fans at back of auditorium, so we have to go in front door and walk way back to back of school
just hope i can make it.
i get out of breath but my knee also kills me if i walk a lot.
but i wouldn't not go for the world.
things like this is a reason i just have to lose weight.
next year when my granddaughter graduates from college i just have to be there and there is a lott of walking involved there.
but i just finished wathcing last episode[was a marithon on brovo] of work out and was inspired after seeing how well the clients did on their challenge. lol

I'm bragging a little - I FINALLY got over the 35 pound hurdle (oops, just remember I need to update my picture thingy).

I use to make my popcorn in a pan (after my air popper died), but was too tempted to continue to make the "55 gallon drum size container" for me to snack on...so switched to the light microwave kind, but I use the butter spray on it...the bag turns it into a "controlled substance" for me and it took away the free-for-all chance.

its very hot here where i am too. i started not to do any exercise today because of it, but surprise ,surprise ,for me , i started getting restless about the time i usualy exercise every day. finaly i had to give up and doit. feel much better body and soul. its really odd how it can become a part of your daily routine. i have to exercise now just like i have to eat a meal. i like it that way. i am going to use pop corn for snacks. microwave. its good for fiber as well as killing my little nagging hunger at bed time. thanks to all for letting me in on the info about pop corn. i like kettle corn once in a while too.

How to stay out of the refrigerator...that's easy for me. Mine broke down in July of 07, I never got it fixed.
Since I live alone (until my son moved back in) I use a small cooler to keep things like eggs or a carton or "eggs whites only", and stuff like spray butter (flavor - gotta have it for my popcorn snacking)and usually some lite mayo and salad dressing. So I can look if I want but there isn't going to be much of anything in that cooler...I think it's a drastic way to break the habit of "cruising for food"...and frankly I don't feel like I miss it. I've had too many other projects to pay pay pay for on my house to worry about something I've been able to do without.
I will mention I have a large chest freezer in my basement where I keep individual portions of meat/fish/chicken and lots of veggies/fruit, and a lot of my son's food. I fill containers and freeze them to put in the cooler. I figure going up/down the basement stairs is "part of my exercise program".

I do watch TV in the evening - been working 10 hour days M-F, so do some things on the computer and then watch TV for 1-2 hours with my feet up, then I'm out like a light.

On the weekends I will stray from eating the way I would like to if I watch too much TV, so at this time of year I do a lot of yard/garden work (1 have a triple lot-so there is lots to do). My current craft/art activity is doing soft pastels - not going to touch food while doing that...I took up quilting a few years ago because you can't touch food doing that either.

So there is my unusual and drastic way of "staying out of the fridge.

Linda

yea, i like to watch work out too mainly because of the drama i guess without it , there wouldn't be much to it lol
missed the finality though.

i love the biggest loser shows and can't wait till the new one in the fall.

speaking of fall , my goal is to be 300 or not far from it by oct. 1st.

been doing real well this week but trying to keep busy so i don't get tempted.
if i stay busy, i don't think about food . but as soon as i sit in front of the tv well thats it. unless i get interested in something but i am not a big tv watcher except some reality shows, and csi ect.
i have been crocheting a lot lately, we always have a craft fair in the fall at church so thought i would get a start .

what does the rest of you do to get you out of the refrg lol

Hi Team!

I think it would be so nice if God would bless us all who suffer (um, I mean hate:) with the heat and yet we still keep going, oh say with at least a half pound loss a day. It all seems so much harder when it's so hot, ugh!

OMG Dave, you're definitely a charmer! emoticon Thank you! I'm so glad you're part of SparkPeople and our Team!(((BIG HUGS)))

Linda - Planning an anniversary party for your mom when you live 2,000 miles away sounds like something that should be on the Style Network, lol!

I hope you can get back to golfing as soon as you can too. Loving something that much would be such a great thing all the way around! Your story about the men golfers is hilarious! Good for you!

LOL @ Lee! That's so true. What's a girl to do?

Hi Kathy - I seem to always do better eating wise during the summer too, especially with drinking water.

Did you all see my post about SP's new feature about copying meals? SparkPeople just keeps getting better and better!

Hey I'd love to send you some cooler weather. I hated the hot humid weather in Michigan when I lived there (and no some people will never "get use to it" - I lived there 40 years and hated every summer).
Eastern WA has the same temps during the summer, but once we get out of the spring "rainy season" it will become very dry...and trust me a dry heat is MUCH easier to take.
I took golf classes and played golf a couple years before I shattered my shoulder. . .I never would have survived the classes let alone playing 18 holes if I had been in Michigan.
I'm hoping that once I lose more weight I can maybe hire a golf pro to re-teach me how to swing my clubs (adjustments will need to be made since my surgeries).
I never cared how I did compared to any one but me, my goal was just to take a couple strokes off each time I played. I had discovered:
1. I didn't worry about any thing when I was playing golf, except hitting the ball.
2. It's always pretty on the golf courses.
3. I was more spiritual on the course as well especially if there were men around(always macho men on a golf course).
STORY...one time a group of 4 men caught up to us, they were "bent out of shape" because I (the only women) was holding things up. I silently prayed, "Please let me hit the ball well". I took a practice swing and then stepped up and drove off the tee (praying repeatedly). I was watching the ball sail down the center of the fairway with dead quiet behind me. Finally one of the "macho men" said, "dang does she always hit that well?" I just turned and smugly said "yeah, usually I do" (didn't really) and walked down the fairway still hearing their comments about how great my drive was - inside I was doing the Tiger Wood fist thing and thinking "Y-E-S".
Comments like that and getting even 1 spectacular hit during 18 holes - hooked me on golf...I hope I will be able to play again.

Have a great day everyone - stay Spark strong...

On the bright side of the heat....it keeps my eating in check lol

Have a great day all....and Ladyn55chvy - I hope that your husband is doing better...my father had a similar issue a couple of years ago - you are both in my thoughts and prayers

Good Morning team

To all of you with hot weather, please send some my way...I looked at the thermometer this morning - it's 39 and very windy and wet.

My mom sent me an e-mail yesterday, she wants me to plan the decorations for their 60th wedding anniversary party...for a room they are renting that I've never seen. Also I live 2000 miles from there, so when I do get back there I'm going to have about 1 day to plan it, buy it, and then go a little early on the day of their party to decorate it.

Feel like I've been doing very well, just might have to get on the scale at work this morning to see if it agrees with me...I feel like I've been hanging in the 30-35 pounds lost range forever (something like 3+ weeks now) I want to hit 40 gone by the end of the month...my personal goal.

Bye for now,
Linda

update: I did lose some more, so now I'm at 34.4 pounds gone...gonna leap that 35# mark by the end of this week.

Hi There!

Hey Dave - Good job on making it through the weekend parties...and on no cake:) Not easy I'm sure. You're right, it's all about choices. emoticon
I finally posted a couple of photos:) I'm sure you'll be thrilled, lol!

Ouch! How did you injure your back Lisa? I think maybe I missed a post? emoticon On 2 lbs. lost this week!

Cheryl - I'm glad the BBQ was fun. Good job!
I'm sorry about Bobby. I said a little prayer for him. Let us know how he's doing.

Hi Lee - I see you found the weigh in thread. Weigh in on whatever day(s) you normally do. I've been weighing in on Mondays but I might switch back to Sunday.
Africa sounds so exciting! I'm sure she'll have a great time.
We're glad you found us too:)

I had a pretty good day, but it was hot for the first time in a few weeks. It's hard to get used to. I felt so tired today. It didn't help that I was bored too, lol!

When I came in to work today my boss asked how I was and I said, "Hillary dropped out of the primary, gas is $4.50 a gallon and last night Arnold said we were officially in a drought!" I probably shouldn't have said anything because he hung out for about 15 mins. "discussing" things, LOL!

MistyBug - Did you get to sleep last night? Did the snack help? I had to laugh at "food counts whether anyone can see me or not." I feel that way about fruit. If I eat a piece of fruit (apple, orange, watermelon, etc.) and it doesn't taste that good but I still eat it, I REALLY don't think I should have to count it, lol!

Hi ScotiaChick:)

hey everyone....our bbq at work went very well. i was very good and had 2 chicken weiners with slaw made with vinegar no mayo and water. it was not bad at all. i made the dessert and everyone loved it. i used the reduced sugar cake mix made with a diet soda, then put fruit on top and then mixed the sf pudding in with the sf cool whip and refrigerated it. bit hit!!! hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

i am sending out prayer requests for my husband. he is diabetic and has an infected toe. the doctor may take it off if it is not better by this Thursday. please add him to your prayers, his name is Bobby. thanks everyone!!!

Thanks Dusty! How was your weekend?
Yes, I'll have to post it over there. I am tracking everything this week, I find it hard to track, well..not hard, I'm lazy. Today we're having a turkey dinner- and damn the dressing is good, but I've decided its not really worth it to blow everything I work hard for. Making a light dessert, and I'll have a little bit of everything.
Lee, you're right! It's keeping me going, now I want to get out of the 60's!!
Dave- great choice, not to have cake, not sure if you're like me or not, once I start, I can't stop.

Yes, Lisa, NS- hopefully the weather will start getting nicer.

ASHBUG1 emoticon To the Team Lee! It's great having you here!

Linda - LOL @ your son. It's so great that he's supporting you! Some days it feels like I'm eating more than I am. That's why I like using the Food Tracker (or my journal at home). Some days I feel like I'm eating less though, lol!
emoticon What kind did you get? (I'm such a geek, lol!)

Lisa - It's great to see you posting! :)

Cheryl - How did your BBQ go yesterday at work?

Hey Dave, did you get my SparkMail yesterday?

Kris - Have a wonderful vacation. I'm so excited that you're looking forward to it especially after you've lost sooooooo much weight! Talk to you when you get back.

ScotiaChick emoticon on your 2.8 lbs. lost! Be sure and post your loss over in the Let's Just Do It and Team Challenges Forum / Weekly Weigh In thread too.

I hope everyone else starts doing that also. Pick a day(s)...up or down doesn't matter as long as we stay accountable:)

emoticon How are all the rest of our new members doing? Post and let us know or just say Hi:)

Hi newbies...and welcome.

Had a good week, feeling good, waiting for our rainy time to end so I can start doing more outside (I give it about another 7-10 days then we should be good to go). Have gotten 45 minutes of cardio in 5 days this week (my goal).

My laptop arrived so I'm no longer dependent on whether my son's computer is home on the weekends (he takes it when he spends 1-3 days at a friend's apartment). I'm still learning about it, I'm hoping I can get some photos added to my SparkPage now (had a friend take some near the time I started SP.

My son laughed at me last night (after looking at me seriously concerned)...why you might ask...because when I entered my food for dinner I discovered I was still about 500 calories below the low end of my calorie range, so I made a peanut butter and blueberry sandwich. He said, "OMG - please tell me you are not eating a PB and blueberry sandwich mom." Told him, "Yep, that is what I'm eating, it's pretty good, want a bite?" He said, "You are kidding right?" Told him, "it's just PB and J without all the sugar from the jam." I could tell he thought I had lost my mind...guess what? I don't care, I thought it was very satisfying and rather yummy. He has been very supportive so this was actually funny to see him freaked out a bit.

Linda

Thanks Dusty!

Joining the team must already be having an effect on me.... I got home from my daughter's kindergarten graduation and just after signing up with the team, I hopped off the couch and started cleaning the whole house. I tend to do that on occasion though...I get compulsions to clean. Tonight it was sweeping and mopping. It's so much easier when my kids are gone to bed.
Anyways....back tomorrow... Hope everyone has a great Friday !

Hi there all...

Dusty invited me to the group and I wanted to briefly introduce myself.
I'm Erica...I'll be 30 on Sunday. I'm married with 2 daughters, ages 6 and 8. I've been on Sparkpeople since December, but only recently got my focus strong enough to start losing the weight. Plus, I talked my husband into buying me a treadmill as an early birthday present...there's no excuses now :D
Anyways, I'm pressed for time tonight, but I'll check back in often..I love to post back and forth with everyone.
Thanks for the invite Dusty!

Cheryl - I'm so sorry I missed your post yesterday about your BBQ at work tomorrow!

What you have planned for dessert sounds great. My old stand by is Angel Food Cake (or cups) with strawberries and Cool Whip.

Although it might be too hard for an office setting outside, I love Root Beer Floats! Vanilla Ice Cream (low cal, low sugar, slow churned, etc.) and diet root beer or regular for those that want it. Yummy, lol. (And filling. A little ice cream goes a long way.)

If you're not sure if you can count on someone bringing the chicken franks make sure and bring your own along with anything else that will be helpful to you.

Let us know how it goes. Sounds like fun.
