Note to Hopefultolose...I totally love your plan of buying a plant to represent every pound you've lost. I do believe I'm going to do that as well. At the last house I had in Michigan I had over 100 varieties of perennials/herbs and loved it and miss not having them here. This is a good reason to get started on that dream again.

Welcome to all the new team members...you've come to the right place.

Good Morning to everyone else...I like how active this team is, and hope to get to know you better by staying "chatty" with this team.

Hope everyone has a good day today.

I'm so happy to see so many positive and enthusiastic people posting and supporting each other. emoticon

Hi QUILL_GIRL / Lisa! emoticon To SparkPeople and to the Team! It's great having you here with us!

We all know what you're going through. Like everyone has said Baby Steps are the way to go and one day at a time. One of my favorite SparkPeople sayings is, "It's about progress not perfection."

On your Weigh Loss Ticker maybe you can change it to show a loss of 10%, say 40 lbs. Like on mine it shows how much weight I want to lose by the 4th of July. As you start to lose weight your ticker will move faster and also you won't be looking at the "170" every time you're on site. Something to think about:)
emoticon On you new home! That's so exciting!
*******
ScotiaChick - I remember when I first got a computer and got online (with dial up) I was amazed at how fast all the pages loaded. But then I felt the need for speed, lol. It also really got bad when everyone started with the flash ads, etc. Then not only was it slow but my computer kept crashing.

I did something like that at Subway too. We're all learning new ways and will make mistakes along the way but like Kris said don't let it overwhelm you.

*******
Linda - A whole year must have be so hard! Sometimes I think I invented denial, lol!

*******
Debbie - I didn't know that about soda. PLEASE don't make me give up my Diet Pepsi, lol! Thanks for the info and link to Joy Fit Club. I will check it out soon.

*******
emoticon HopefulToLose (Kris)! Thanks for joining us! I looked at your photos and you look so good! I can tell (of course:) a big difference.
Yes that would have been embarrassing but you did something about it and turned it around! You are doing so awesome! Great attitude and I like how you are rewarding yourself. emoticon on another 2 lbs. lost!
*******

Hope every one else had a good day. Stay positive! Gotta go, talk to you tomorrow!

Hi Ashley!

If you look at the Team Forums, like "General Team Discussion Forum" on the same line to the right you'll see (5/7). That means of the 5 posts showing there's a total of 7. Click on "General Team Discussion Forum" (or on 5/7) and you'll then see all the posts. The most current posts, stay on top.

Your post under "Let's Just Do It! and Team Challenges Forum" shows (3/6). Click on either link and you'll see all the posts.

Does that make sense?

So post away, lol!

Ok, I have a challenge coming up. Friday we are having a cook out here at work. Hot dogs with all the fixings!! My challenge is that I have to fix the dessert for 30 people. WOW! I think I will fix a large trifle using sugar free pudding with a sponge cake and some fresh fruit and sugar free cool whip.
I have requested that someone get chicken franks so i can stay on track. otherwise i will just be eating a salad.

hi everyone ! hope everyone is having a good day emoticon .
Scotiachick-don't get overwhelmed by the 700 calories, your doing good lady and you can think of it as i treated myself this morning and it was good, but as long as i be good for the rest of the day , there was no harm done!like i said you are doing awesome though!!
lisa -i also had gotten looks from my doctors , try having a mother -in -law as one. before i lost some of my weight my husband and his dad and her were out to dinner and she looked at me and said krissy would you like to go to a diettion ,i could get you one for free where i work . totally embarrassment too thought i was going to die, the rest of the time we were eating i picked at my food and wanted to cry. however i have lost weight and all she says now is keep up the good work , your looking good , her words at the time hurt but i think it was the little kick i needed .
however i have taken pictures from then to now and they are on my spark page. all i can think also is why ,or how , and that i am never going to treat myself like that again . every pound i lost i celebrated and still do, like today i lost 2 pounds so i am going to Lowe's and buying something for my garden every plan i have represents a pound . never give up on yourself !!!! emoticon

Hi-
No..No DSL/Cable...I live in rural Nova Scotia...and dial up sux!

I made a huge mistake today...and WILL not do it again. Went to subway, "thought" I'd take 10 pts (or about 400 calories) for a breakfast sandwich, but when I went to the website it was 700 calories...yes...700...OMG!! I felt sick!!...I know whats done is done..and I WILL NEVER have that again. So..it will be salad for lunch and an extra walk, lived and learned that lesson..NEVER again :)

reading the posts are great!, I agree cutting out soda's (or we call it pop) is a great idea, I have been trying it myself. I feel better without pop

Hello Lisa!
I agree that one day at a time is all you need to think about. It can seem overwhelming otherwise, but you have now surrounded yourself with people who know all to well that sinking feeling of discovering how much they weigh. I hate weighing at my doctor! =) What helps me also is to tell myself this is not a diet but a life style change. You don't have to be perfect. Also don't beat yourself up if you have something you shouldn't have had. Just do better the next meal. If you strive to stay in your calorie range and change to foods you eat to be more nutirent you will lose weight. And drink lots of water. Try and cut back or eliminate Soft drinks. The carbonation expands your stomach and make you feel you need to eat more. Learn portion sizes and just tell yourself that is enough. If you want more later have it at snack. Remeber that the feeling of hunger is not an enemy, but your friend. It is eating away your fat! =) Also when you feel your motivation slipping post! And read the motivational spark pages. Success stories, and A new thing I just found is the Today show has the joy fit club. You can go to their website and click on their health link. It is all people who have lost over a hundred pounds and pictures and how they did it. It is very inspiring. There is enough you could read one every day. every Monday they add a new one too!

Debbie

Welcome Lisa and all Newbies,

Take it 1 day at a time, track nutrition, track activity.

I think it's one of those mysteries of nature that somehow we got to the weight we started at.

I can't believe I gained almost 150 in 7(ish) years...mine started apparently with the huge number of restrictions I had after shattering my shoulder. For 1 year - no bending, reaching, lifting, leaning, pushing, pulling, twisting, even told no walking IF there was any chance of tripping or slipping. . .apparently the only activity left was eating. I also believe that it doesn't help that the only mirror in my house is one where I can only see myself from the neck up, guess because the rest of my body didn't exist in my vision, it must not have in my mind either.

So here I am...we all have our stories, some told, some untold, we are all on this journey together, we have a great team, we can do this together, none of us are alone.

SparkPeople forever!
Linda

Welcome Lisa!
I find that I have to take it one day at a time. When I look at the "big picture", or think about the fact that I have to lose more than half my body weight I just get overwhelmed and I want to give up. So I just don't think about it... I just think about today. What can I do today to make a positive impact on my health? What can I do right now? I've gotten a lot farther taking baby steps than I ever did in years of trying to make giant leaps or huge drastic changes. You can do this! We're all here to cheer you on!

Hi Everyone:

I just joined Spark, and hope this will really help. My name is Lisa, and I'm 35. I'll be married for 2 years in October, and we just bought our first house. I went to the doctors yesterday, as I am off work with a very bad back injury, and he got me to get on the scale. The look he gave me when he saw it read 390 said it all. All he said was " you have to work on that". Since then, everytime I've put something in my mouth, I remember that look. HUMILIATING.

How did I get here? How did that number get so high? What am I doing to myself? How do I get out? I know you take it day by day, but that road in front of me seems never ending. Do I hate myself that much to let me get to this size...a size that I never look in the mirror, a size that I have stopped seeing some of my friend, as I know they will see a big difference in me, a size that I hate. Or do I love myself enough to get on that road and just start? I don't know the answer to either of these questions, but with Spark and the help of all of you, I'm sure I'll find the answer, and do what I need to do.

I ready to hear the answer.

Lisa emoticon

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the late reply- My weekend went well as did the rest of the week, with a minor slip on Monday night- my Mom and I had some nachos. Dusty you mentioned counting my points on here, that's a great idea. WW points are calculated differently now, it goes by your weight, age, height, daily activity level and sex. I'm currently sitting at 43 pts per day, the max...but on friday, I hope to loose a point. If anyone would like to know how to figure out their points send me a message and I'd be more than happy to give you any info I have.

I got up today and went to Curves, wow, it feels good to get active in the AM.

I'm still reading the posts I missed all week, its soo hard to check this on dialup and I haven't been at a desk at work this week, doing some training, been on my feet.

Happy hump day!!

Hi

Linda - Sodium is a tough one. Besides liking salty foods (Chipoholic and hey, pass the margaritas:) I'm a vegetarian so the foods I eat tend to have a lot of sodium.

Maureen - Congratulations on making good choices and on it getting easier to say no! emoticon

emoticon Lots of new people joining. Starting posting and let us know what and how you're doing:)

Hi Everyone!
My weekend was... well, weird. I went on a road trip Saturday, and it went great. I was traveling with a large group from my church, and I didn't get much say in where we ate, and many people were pushing food at me (out of kindness, of course) but I found it was much easier to say no this time. I even found myself getting full on much smaller portions. Half a sandwich for lunch. 2 small slices of pizza for dinner. Lots of water and lots of walking. We didn't get back home until 4:30 in the morning which messed me up a little. It took a lot of coffee to get me up and going for church on Sunday! And then I ended up napping most of the afternoon! But all in all, I'm really happy with the choices I made... even though the weekend was crazy, I didn't go crazy!

Go Summer Sizzlers!

Wow...

I've got to figure out what happens to me on the weekends...too much sodium???...not enough activity??? Every weekend I gain weight, this morning I could hardly get my ring on, got on the scale and gained about 3.5 pounds...since my weigh-in on Friday.
Since starting SP is not the first time I've noticed this, about 2 years ago when I had started exercising again, I found that if I didn't exercise every day of the week I gain weight any time I took a day or two off.

I'm going to chalk this one up to sodium and eating at a buffett Thursday night - let me rephrase that eating no where near as healthy as I could have at a buffett Thursday night...AND then eating a bunch of my son's Doritos.

Guess I've identified the issue...
I'm back on track today with tracking and exercise.

Linda

How did everyone's Sunday go? It's great to see so many people joining the team!

Hi Kimberly - I'm sorry you're having a rough time. Emotional eating is the worst, I know! Is there anyone that can help you with your parents so that you can get some time for yourself?
I don't know very much about the Lap Band surgery except from what I've seen on TV. (Mostly Big Medicine.) Will going in and getting it adjusted help?

You're off to a great start with a 50 lb. loss and all the walking you're doing is great! Keep it up:) SparkPeople is all about support and encouragement. I think it will really help. Hang in there:) emoticon

I did good today, stayed on track and even made myself do a 1 mile WATP dvd. Baby steps:)

I added some Team Goals and I hope you all join. It's a new Spark Feature so if you need help or have questions ask.

How's everyone's Saturday going so far? I just finished reading all the getting to know you posts. It's so interesting and I also had to laugh at some of your answers. Thanks for taking the time!

Maureen - That's so funny that I left out summer and wrote fall twice. Fall is perfect for me as I'm not summer friendly, LOL.

Debbie - It's great that you're able to keep in touch with all your kids and watch them grow and that they can still have you in their life:)

Take care and talk to you later.

Thank you Dusty,
Yes, I have read the nanny diaries and seen the movie! The book is better I think.
I have done this type of work for many years and have only had one family that ended kind of on bad terms. I ended the job though, not them, because I refuse to be treated with disrespect. This family I have been with the last two and half years are very close to me and my husband. We have gone out with them socially and will continue to have a friendship with them. They are like family to me. I am actually going to watch the kids next Friday because they don't have school that day and I am not working yet. I am also going to go by and visit after school at least one day. I know they wont understand where I went because they are so young and they will be mad at me. So, I am going to try and help that a little. =)
Two former children I nannied were in my wedding. My first is actually graduating high school this year and so I am going to a dinner for her next Sunday night. She was a junior bridesmaid in my wedding six years ago. And then another one, a little boy was in my wedding as my ring barrer. He is now nine and spends this night with us when his schedule permits.I love them all like they are mine. =)

Debbie

Hi Debbie - That's so sad about your job ending today. I completely sympathize with you. Years ago I got a job as a personal assistant to a family who had just had a new baby girl. Well the job turned into also being a nanny. I worked there for about 5 years and it didn't end well and it broke my heart. I not only lost my job but I never got to see her again.

I now work for a family business where the office is on the property and the kids are always in and out. The youngest boy was about 6 months old when I started there and he's now 6. (They also have twin boys who will be nine next month.) The wife started leaving him (the other two were in daycare) with me lots soon after I started there which was just fine with me, lol. BUT now it's like I'm in the same boat. Several times I've wanted to quit but it's way to hard because I'm attached to the kids especially the youngest one. God forbid I should get fired, lol! It's so hard not to get attached.

Unlike you I've never had kids. It's a tough decision for sure. What is it Dr. Phil says? "Don't invest more than you can afford to lose". I'm not sure I could go through it again. Hopefully this job will end good so I can keep in touch with them.

If you haven't read the book The Nanny Diaries by Emma Mclaughlin you really should. It's so good. (I never saw the movie.)

Sorry this was such a long post but it was a real rough time for me. I hope that whatever you decide will be just right for you. It sounds like you'll make a great mom one day soon:)

Well, today was my last day at work. I am a nanny and so every job I take one day comes to an end and today was that day for me once again. It is always hard for me emotionally because I love the children I care for, but this was even harder because I have worked for the nicest people I have ever worked for. In two and half years we have never had a problem with each other and they have always treated me like a friend and not an employee. I am planning to take a break and figure out what I want to do next by July. I really am not sure I want to do this to myself again. It really hurts. Also, my husband and I want children and I would love to just have my own and be at home with them. Right now though I don't have that luxury. My husbands company closed in March and so he is also unemployed. So, we are in a place right now we have never been at the same time. Our peace is in knowing God is in control of it all. He has never failed us and never will! =)
In the past I may have ate emotionally, but this time I have not really had an appetite. I will be okay. Everyone have a great weekend!

Debbie

How many points do you get a day? Instead of posting your calorie range (in the Accountability thread) you could just post your points and whether or not you went under or over (or something like that) if that's how you do it? If you want to anyway?

Hi everyone! Happy Friday!!

I personally find a fuller fat yogurt fills me up better than the no fat one. I follow WW points for now and I have a lot of points..so..using 2-3 on yogurt is better than the 1 pt ones. =

Everyone drink all their water today? I was off work..and didn't get it all in.

Check in later, have a great weekend!!

If you like drinkable yogurt, you may want to try kefir. Kefir has more probiotics than yogurt. It tastes a lot like yogurt, just a little tangier, and it comes in all different flavors. My kids like to mix it with their breakfast cereal instead of milk. (Nobody's told them its good for them yet LOL)

Thanks guys for the tips I love yogurt, but I was looking too far into it I tend to be tooo analytical. I ate some dannon all natural and it tasted great and there are no artificial additives!

Hi!

Great ideas Debbie and Linda! Thanks.

Dani - I think yogurt is great for you. Like Linda I eat the Yoplait Light. It's easy to take to work for a snack too. Sometimes I'll stick it in the freezer to get it kind of slushy which is good for a change. (Or for kids you can scoop it in to those little popsicle molds and freeze.)

Food and Gas...shudder. I consider myself lucky that I live by myself and that I drive a VW Bug (61) LOL!

It's great to see you all posting and supporting each other! emoticon

Talk to you tomorrow!

I do understand what you mean about grocery prices and didn't mean to discount the fact they are climbing much faster than any "cost-of-living" raises I happen to get in January. I just about choke at some of the prices...I'm fortunate that I am buying for 2 and not 4...but I do feel for you, and all of us everytime I'm in the store.

Thanks for the ideas Linda. I wish I had a big freezer like that! Unfortunately, I don't have room for something like that in my apartment. (It's tiny!) I do try to buy on bulk and on sale whenever possible, but I've still watched my grocery bill almost double over the last year. I'm feeding a family of four, and it gets expensive!

yogurt is supposed to be good for you, it has calcium, it has protein, it has special little bacteria (not sure that is the correct word) that is beneficial to your digestive system.

I usually eat Yoplait Light, which has 100 calories, although I saw a different one advertized on TV which has 60 calories and I think is supposed to be more "fresh fruity".

You might need to develope a taste for it if you've never had it before...I'd suggest starting with a fruity one and not starting with plain...although plain yogurt can replace or be mixed with things like mayo or sour cream (I prefer mixing)

Enjoy emoticon

I usually live alone (other than my son staying here for a while right now). So I'm usually looking for good deals at the grocery store.
I have a large chest freezer (yes even got a good deal on it - pd $75 at a yard sale about 12 years ago) so whenever whole chickens are on sale I'll buy 3 (or whatever the max is) a couple days in a row and put them in the freezer. Around Thanksgiving I usually buy a couple small turkeys ($.49/lb) for the freezer, and at Easter I bought a whole ham for $.69/lb and then had the butcher cut it into 4ths and froze it.
1 store had a good price on halibut ($6.99/lb instead of the usual $10.99) I bought 1/2 a halibut, which yeah it was something like $67.00 but I cut it into portions and had about 20 portions, I had the store fillet it and give me the bone section, poached it and had enough fish from just that for another 4 portions.
Or once in a while they will have tilapia for $2.99/lb the fillets are individually vacuum sealed so I buy a 10# box and then I can just take out 1 or 2 fillets.

I always check the "cheap meat (30-50% off) and the cheap freezer door" at the grocery where they mark stuff down...can somtimes get bags of veggies for $1, or pints of ice cream for my son for $1.50.

I use to buy vegetarian meat substitutes during a once/year case lot sale. (haven't done that for a while)

I'm always scrounging for a good deal. One summer I made quite a haul at a local produce stand...I found out what day of the week they were closed, and found out what time they closed...then would go there about 10-15 minutes before they closed the day before their day off. I got a whole trunk full of fresh produce for $17...I spent the next day putting it up for the the freezer.

Some years I also have a large vegetable garden (about 30 x 40 ft or so)...I get enough veggies out of that for me for the winter.

Before I started SP I was easily spending $4-$5/day for lunch in the cafeteria at work...I now buy the store brand of lean cusine type meals and get 5 for $10...so instead of spending about $25/wk on lunch I now spend $10/week and then I keep a large bottle of low sodium V8 in our office refrigerator just in case I need more veggies with lunch.

OK enough chatting from me for now.
Linda

Hello! Thanks Dusty for inviting me to join your group. I will try and stay active in posting.
About food expenses. I try and buy chicken breast in the bag at Walmart. It is only about 7 dollars. I buy a bag of potatoes and some sweet potatoes. I love spinach so I buy the value brand of that. A can is only around 60 cents. I just drian off the juice and someone suggested rinsing it if you watching your sodium. Then I also buy the tuna packets in a box of four and that is under 4 dollars. I buy value brand honey mustard to go in my tuna. It is very good. I also add sweet pickle relish. I buy turkey sausage links and that is under 3 dollars. Peanut butter also goes a long way. I will either eat oatmeal with a tsp of peanut butter in it or bread with peanut butter for breakfast. I also buy bananas and canned pineapple or diced peaches sweetend with splenda. Also value brand from walmart. Some people are hesitant to try a less expensive brand of food, but there is no loss in the taste. It is very good.

Debbie

Hi Linda - Yes it can be more expensive. I live by myself so I buy a lot of veg burgs., frozen vegs and single serving size snacks etc.

Hi Linda - That's to bad about your son. You're right it is probably time for him to move out. Sometimes we've just got to put ourselves and our health first.

Is anyone finding the price of groceries is making healthy eating more difficult??

I sure am! Anyone have good ideas for healthy budget meals and money saving tips? I've been scouring the internet, but when it comes to budget meals, it seems like you either have to sacrifice health, or live off beans and rice. Blah!

Did everyone take the day off today too? Traffic was light coming to work, phones are not ringing...this is boring. I am really gonna need to go home and work out tonight! The first thing this morning I got on all my teams to see what was going on and nobody was there....I wanted to let someone know that I did really good this weekend. It was not easy because I wanted to cook something sweet, but I opted for a kosher dill pickle slice instead to kill the sweet tooth. I hope everyone had a great weekend.
