I agree that it is hard to find that balance many times. I am very fortunate that I am able to not work even though my kids are in school now. We've decided to do this as long as we can afford it because it definitely does bring more balance. Obviously this doesn't work for everyone, but honestly there are still weeks that I find myself spinning in circles and trying to fit it all in between the side "work" stuff I do (web design for others, etc) and volunteering places.

I am a firm believer that exercise/fitness helps make a person more balanced. While its hard to fit it in because its "one more thing", to me, the benefits you get from it are SO worth it in the end. I always have an improved mood after exercise and of course, being fit and not overweight will give you lots more energy.

Hard as it might be, giving up some things to be able to make exercise a priority is essential...think about the hours of tv most people watch each evening. Exercise is worth SO much more to your well being than tv. That's just one example.

But I've also found that to keep balance I need to keep meal planning under control. I currently plan a month of meals out (dinners) and I shop one big time for the whole month and then weekly go once to get fresh veggies/fruits/milk type stuff or anything I ran out of that I wasn't anticipating. Its nice to have a month planned out and to be able to just look ahead at what's for dinner and be prepared.

Life is constantly throwing curve balls. You just have to be prepared.
I just moved to SC and have been BUSY with all that entails. I have only ran 1 time in a week and rode a bike 1 time. Other than that every muscle in my body is sore from lifting boxes, moving things and going up and down stairs. Even with all the eating out I have lost 4 lbs.
The key is to keep moving even if it isn't your normal workout routine. I have had to accept this and it has paid off.

Great topic!

I work 10-12 hour days at a law firm, then go home and take care of my husband and the house. It is exhausting, to tell the truth. When work was not so busy I didn't have a problem and when I didn't have medical issues it was not so bad, but now work is torture and medical problems (long list) I crash as soon as I get home, before I could go straight home and hubby and I would go wogging (combination of jogging/walking).

So, now I try when I can take my lunch breaks 2-15 minutes ones and go walking, I even do squats in the ladies room, leg raises, etc., push ups on walls, anywhere I can get it in but to me that is not the same when I get the feeling of the sweat and hard work. :( And now with the holidays here we are busy every weekend until after NEW YEAR! YIKES!

Like someone else said I do not think balance is perfection there is no perfection it does not exist.

That's just my two cents.

Here's an article about fitting in workouts if you are busy. Most SP employees said they have to workout first thing in the morning.. Or it won't happen.

Thank you for sharing that article! I feel the same frustrations. But I'm not sure I would define balance as perfection.

I just read an interesting blog about this. Here is the link (I hope).

really-such-a-thing-as-balance/

I am very lucky in that I am able to work part time -- that helps a lot. I also have a great husband who does a lot around the house and helps with the kids. There is always something that needs to be done (and a hundred things that aren't getting done) and there are times where I feel so overwhelmed I want to scream, but I am generally able to hold it together most of the time.

It's a lot about making priorities. My kids are first, job is second, I usually come in third. Everything else varies. I just try to take one day (and one thing) at a time.

Interesting topic. I am looking forward to hearing others' responses. I don't feel very balanced either, though I don't have much going on. I think I should be doing more with both my personal life and career, but I can't figure out where I could possibly sneak in extra things to do. I am always busy taking care of my husband and our home in my mornings before work. Then I'm at work all afternoon/evening, and I get home and need to crash. I am truly amazed by, and admire, others who have families and various odds and ends to take care of beyond that.

I would like to start up a discussion on life balance. I feel that I have a hard time balancing my work life with my home life. I am so busy and usually feel like I'm pulled in multiple directions every moment. I think this has a lot to do with my weight issues. How do you deal with keeping your life in balance? Is it something that is important to you?
