Jespah, great advice! And the GR librarians are always spot-on helpful. I don't remember the issue I had, but the steps to fix it were clearly marked so when I needed to actually make contact with a librarian, I had all the info already. Thanks for taking the time! (and I'm Abigail Sharpe on there. :)

Quick hi -

I am a librarian on GoodReads. This means I can help fix issues if your book isn't connecting with your profile properly.

But you do need to do some of that legwork yourself. GR has big, big problems with initials and the like. Very annoying. I am also listed as JR (and then my surname) for the publisher of my biggest work and as my first and last name by indie publishers when I've done anthologies. Because I am a librarian, I can go in and fix this but most users cannot.

And don't get me started on the author who participated in an anthology with me and I tried to get her name attached but she decided her name would just be 'Fiona'. No last name. Well, over 20 other people did the same, and the GR system is lousy in that it does not look at a join date or userid or a location - it just looks at name. Hence, to that system, it appears as if there are 20 some-odd Fionas and it just picks one more or less at random unless the writer specifically makes an effort to connect her account to the book. And this Fiona did not. She seemed to think just quickly creating a profile with nothing on it but her first name (which I think may have been a pseudonym anyway) was good enough.

And this is how indie writers lose out on promotions and $$ - it's because when the account and the book are properly connected, you get an extra link to your work on a reputable site.

I work in SEO and blogging now, and I have a background in data reporting and analysis, and the miserable state of that database and so many profiles just makes me want to tear my hair out in frustration.

So, my utterly unsolicited advice on an older topic is: create your author profile. Be detailed without crossing into TMI. If you write romance (for instance), say you do, and make it clear whether it's sweet or M/M or whatever as people are searching under those terms. Make your name complete, even if it's a pen name, and claim your books directly. GR profiles are free advertising and they don't take a lot of time to set up.

Hopping off my soapbox now.

I understand that one ought not reveiw their own book, but having an author pic and a statement about your book seems good to me, professional. The other thing is that if you don't get the word out, who will? I for one do not take offense.

You're on there whether you register or not, if you have a book released. I was given the advice to create an author page so you claim your books.

I also hang out in the groups, but go as a reader, not a writer. Folks get testy with all the self-promotion.

I am not sure about an author page, but I am watching a friend's book and how she is dealing with it. She encourages anyone who she knows who reads the book to review it. She "likes" their reviews. I noticed a friend who doesn't know her picked up the book from my review.

BTW, my friend does not have an author page. It does look simple to set up.

Good luck to you. Anyway to promote it seems wise to me!

Any tips, advice about creating a www.Goodreads.com author profile?

Is it worth the effort?

Where should the author start? i.e. writing book reviews, joining clubs, etc.
