Great quote, and I certainly agree with that one.

Yes, I hope you get to go to the Redwoods soon, Carol. I would love to visit that area someday.

Yesterday I resigned from my volunteer duties at the local nursing home/assisted living facility. I have facilitated art projects there once a month (more often, if I fill in for someone else) for almost four years. I enjoyed working with the residents, but it's not fair for me to have to cancel at the last minute and leave one of the other volunteers without a partner to work with. My co-worker there (from the local Art League) has been coming up with the projects for the past several months, and I have not felt like I've done my fair share -- and I haven't. Like Carol said, I know if I ever want to go back to volunteering there, they will take me! By the way, I immediately felt like a big load had been lifted off of my shoulders after I sent in my letter of resignation.

sound like a terrific destination. I haven’t been in over 30 years. I hope your car turns that direction soon with you in it...

Right now I feel like it is hard to even go on a local adventure. The weather is wet and the air is cold. My DH has wanted to go to the Redwoods since this summer and we just haven't found a way to take 2 or 3 days to do. I am over obligated so it seems that in order to fulfill some of our wishes DH and I need to cut back on our volunteer work. Not sure what it will be but definitely going on my list as a way to free up some time.

I've always believed that memories are better than things. No one can ever take your experiences away from you.

What a wonderful experience that must have been to hike that long distance in Western Europe! Wow! That is such an accomplishment!

Yes, just keep that dream of Iceland at the forefront, and it will happen! emoticon

IMPROVINGME,
You are right...
I will try my best to follow that dream
and eventually go to Iceland.
Things seem more illusive as I get older (not that 56 is old) but I feel more fragile and my dreams smaller and less outlandish. But this dream seems one that is yet doable... I so hope I can someday make it come to fruition.

When I was in my late twenties I dated a mountain man and together we hiked almost 3/4 of the GR5 which is the premier long-distance hiking trail of Western Europe (about 1,500 miles long) & is laid out to traverse along, or to cross as many mountain ridges and highlands as possible. This was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life. I lived a rather dull and quiet life after we broke up but my heart remembers that epic adventure so fondly. I was so lucky and I’m so grateful to have had that experience. Especially now that my health feels compromised and I know that I could never ever have it in me to do any of that again. What an amazing thing that was.

Thank you for your positive encouragement to keep my dream of Iceland on the burner.

Searching for something else, I just found this online and had to share it. This quote made me smile:

“Reasonable things will never bring you joy as much as unreasonable ones do.” ~ Zainab T. Khan

Aha!

My own dreams may sound unreasonable to others sometimes, and maybe, at first, even unreasonable to me -- but they are still my dreams. To continue to dream about them or to act upon them? That's the question I frequently ask myself.

I know when I was working I was better organized but I didn't really take time for myself. Things like housework seemed really important then. Not so much anymore, though. I still find I am easily distracted because of all the things I want to do.

Oh, back then I had no regrets -- it was just impossible. Aside from the fact that no families were allowed to go, I was also living in Florida with three children under the age of 4! That was one of the most creative periods of my life, though, and I finished so many projects because I had the kids on a strict schedule and had time to myself every evening to work on my arts and crafts. Now I live by myself and can't seem to start or finish anything because of other obligations. What's wrong with this picture?! New dreams and goals for 2020 and beyond, here I come!

Don't those images of the Baer Art Center look so serene and inspiring and inviting! That's a dream that you can put in your head for keeps, and start making plans now so that you'll be ready to go when the right time presents itself.

My ex-husband was a naval aviator and served two tours of duty at Naval Air Station Keflavik. I never went over there for a visit, but wish I could have, especially after seeing his photographs of the beautiful scenery. Interestingly, I saw a short documentary of Iceland on TV this past week and thought again how great it would be to travel there. That venue would be perfect!

Speaking of dreaming Ok, now I really have found mine! I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland. If it does not open for you look up
BAER ART CENTER (Iceland)

sigh... this one please

1. Seeing the Northern Lights AKA Aurora borealis.
2. The abundant and amazing natural hot springs in Iceland.
3. Mountains and magnificent landscapes.

It should open up to an art residency in Iceland SEE:

We have plenty of wildlife around here, too. I am not even in the country, but in the city. Last year I had the fox family here. We also have hawks that are always in the trees, and rabbits. I don't see the coyotes that have been in nearby neighborhoods, thank goodness.

We have the art museum here that has been having some good exhibits. I wish I could afford them. I don't know what all other museums they have around here. Many have tickets you can gt free from the library, though. Doesn't include the special exhibits, but can go see the other things.

I was just thinking of the places you might travel to see.

That would be really nice to go see. I think the farthest I will ever be able to go is to see the Wildlife Art Museum, which is either in northern Wyoming or Montana, I think. I keep seeing it on Facebook, but it's too far away for me to get to so I don't remember where it is.

2SNOWCRANES,

I encourage you to re-do the Artist's Way again! I'm finding it profoundly life-changing.

(I started it too over 25 years ago & didn't finish but I'm going to this time).

It's great to find an artists forum here on Spark People!

Is that the one where they have you draw without being able to see what you are drawing? We did one of those books back when I took painting in the 90s. No,, I couldn't draw that way.

I went to a class called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and the book was the text. OMG this was an awesome experience. I never thought I could draw until I took the class and went through the book. The book was written by Betty Edwards and there is a new version out. Well worth checking out of your local library!

2SNOWCRANES, still life is what I was trying to think of yesterday. Our watercolor class had a large still life to try to paint. Wet on wet (very wet paper), so it started out very free. No drawing to start it. Of course, before she said she wanted to see (how is it called?) negative spaces done, I had done the other way and my leaves were definitely not done that way. Not very sure how to do those things with negative spaces. She said something about the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" which I haven't ever been able to get through, but I do have it somewhere. Also have "The Artist's Way" somewhere.

I'm going to have to look into those video tutorials. I found it interesting yesterday that the instructor likes Oils and Water Color, but doesn't like Acrylics as well for the same reason that I don't like them -- they dry too fast.

I can't really tell. Looks like the ropes are somehow attached to the top of that board that is covering the hood. It caught my eye the first time I saw it on TV. Will be anxious to hear what you end up doing with your shelf.

Can you tell what it is hanging from? I was thinking of something I had seen, but couldn't remember how to do it that was done with ropes. All I have above the stove is cabinets that are connected to each other from the door to the dining room to the opening that goes to the door to the garage. So whatever it is has to come out from the wall.

Darlene -- You mentioned that you might want to put a shelf up over your stove in the kitchen. That made me think of the shelf that is hung by ropes over the stove in the Pioneer Woman's lodge where she films her cooking shows. Here's the photo that might give you some different ideas about how to hang a shelf after you do your painting:

My oldest grandson just started college classes this week, and he chose an animal science major, too.

That's neat. Ya gotta watch using "AI" around me. I was an animal science major and to me that is a form of breeding livestock. emoticon

Here's the article from My Modern Met: "This Website Uses AI to Transform Any Picture into a 15th-Century Portrait." Pretty neat app! I still haven't tried it, though.

Has anyone tried the 15th century portrait app yet?
