Discounting fingers and toes.... I've separated my shoulder, broken nose, popped a umbilical hernia, hurt my lower back, took a stick to the eye, and too many bumps and bruises to count. Nothing major yet.

After taking a hard fall from a wrist throw in Hapkido, I injured my left knee. It's primarily a joint-based injury, which worries me sometimes even though I'm only 24. I've only been dealing with it for about two months now, but the first month was rough and I got put on corticosteroids to aid in healing since I couldn't handle hills and stairs so well. I don't encounter much pain as of right now, but since I recently added Tae Kwon Do to my regular weekly martial arts routine, I'm noticing my knee again. I've been taking glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for a few weeks now, and it helped me to get over that last bit of pain that was really hindering me from regular daily movement. I suppose I just need to continue to listen to my body and rest when I need to, even though sometimes I feel like pushing myself in the hopes of greater weight loss.

That accident is precisely why my family is afraid of me praciting judo. I am working my way back up to full health. But most of the people in my class are young marines with a whole lot of ego!! They are used to going hardcore on each other.

My left quad is out of commission with a gargantuan bruise right now. One of our teenaged students has grown about four inches in the last six months, and hasn't learned to manage his new strength yet. I'm actually glad he hit me low, because if he'd gotten me in the ribs with that kick, he'd have broken a couple. As it is, I'll be out of sparring at least for another week - right now the quad goes back and forth between seizing up and refusing to contract at all, which makes walking an interesting adventure.

Be careful! Too many of those bruises can put you out of the game altogether. I am fortunate that my current sensei doesn't want me doing anything until I am 100 percent sparring-wise. Now I can practice the throws and holds.

Well, I'm working on getting back into everything after injuring my hand (my tendons got twisted up, or something...I'd been clobbered when either myself or my sparring partner had something backwards). I'm still using a brace during practice, especially in partnered work.

I've taken a few strikes to the head/face, fallen funny (or just fallen over), and had a foot slide when it wasn't supposed to a handful of times.

Plus more bruises than I can count... :)

That is terrific! The adrenaline to ignore pain and win the match is terrific. Congrats on making shodan also. Perseverance definitely paid dividends for you.

The cheek bone was about 10 years back, when I was still a white belt. I came back to class the next week (much to everyone's shock, including the sensei); they made me where a goalie-style face mask for the next two months. I just earned my shodan in the same style (Isshinryu) last August, after a couple of lonh hiatuses for pregnancies/small children.

You see - I not only finished the fight I was in - I won it. I may have been hurting, but I felt so completely BADASS, and it was addictive!

Good luck with that!

I tore a groin muscle on a side kick break a couple of years back (my holder was inexperienced and flinched up and back with the board). It was about 3 months to heal the muscle, and then about another six months before my legs were back to evenly flexible and fit.

The worst injury I've ever had was only six weeks after I started training. A knee in the face with a resulting cracked cheek bone. Two days before Thanksgiving! No amount of make-up could disguise that bruise.

The teacher is a friend and more anxious in spreading the art than trophies. Every training partner that I have worked with has been told that I am easing back into shape which is good. No randori yet until he feels that I am back up to par.

Well the news is kinda good. There is defiantly some tearing of the muscle, but Dr. thinks it will heal if I can give it plenty of rest (only 3 month recovery). He seemed more worried about the amount of bruising, said we need to get the blood to drain so it won't cause problems in the future.

Good luck in your return, hope your next partner lets you warm up first.

First off, I hope that the doctor gives you some good news in regards to your injury. Last November 2009 I was injured doing randori (free sparring) with another student. This person didn't understand that I hadn't practiced with anyone in over a year due to work hours. This past weekend I walked back into the gym and lightly trained. So yes I have been injured within the past year but I am recovering and practicing (cautiously)again.

I think it's time to revive this topic, I can't believe no has gotten hurt in over a year.

My latest is a hamstring injury. I was practicing a jump ax kick board break and got a different holder who was taller. I broke the board but now have a lovely black and purple colored leg from just under the glutes to the top of my knee.

I get to visit the doctor today to see how bad it really is.

Still have a weather toe. Broke it when I threw a sweep just as the other guy turned. Kicked him right on the shin-bone.

After that, I paid more attention to keeping my toes pulled back!

The worst I've gotten is bruises across my shoulders from my first time trying rolls and falls. I've since learned to get lower and control my speed. Pain is a very good teacher in moderation.

Tore my ACL by getting sloppy on landings when tired.

Sprained my ankle half dozen times... same one. You think I'd learn!

My problem seems to lie in not aligning my feet or legs under me properly when said feet leave the ground!

Lets see...... most recently I totally messed up my hip doing axe kicks. I've hyper extended my knee a couple times, broke a rib sparring,I've had my shoulder, collar bone and wrist knocked totally out of wack and nerves damaged from getting a kick to the hand and lots of other little mishaps to numerous to mention.
I would probably never had made it to black belt if it were not for my chiropractor!

I sprained my knee badly testing for IV Dan - my doctor actually sent me to a specialist because she thought I might have ripped a tendon, but luckily, I hadn't. It's while I was recuperating from that that I gained the weight I'm trying to take off now.

I wondered why somebody didn't do something; then I realized I was somebody! - unknown

Before I switched from ITI to the WTF, I tested for my black belt with ITI (used to be part of the ITF before the Grand Master had a falling out with the powers that be) The break consisted of a flying side kick over this 4 feet high bag covered in duct tape (it was a very OLD bag)

You had to jump over the bag and break 2 boards with a flying side kick. I ran jumped broke the boards and realized that my little toe of my base foot slid under the duct tape (the bag had started dip in the middle and my perfectly tucked leg left just enough room for my toe to slip under the space between the bag and the duct tape.

I went one way and my toe the other! It was dislocated and hurt like heck. Luckily Korean Grand Masters are really good at relocating dislocated toes.

However it made my testing memorable!

I'm sure all of us have had the occasional pulled muscle and minor bruises so I won't even try to remember those.

I do recall breaking a toe during a sparing session, the chest protectors do save the ribs but can be rough on the attacker.

I also broke an ankle this summer when I had a bad landing after a jump kick. Still trying to get back to full speed after that one.

I got my nose broken by a flying board last October. Man did it bleed. We were doing a 12 hour over night class and we were about at hour 11 when it happened. I had to sit out and watch the last hour. Everyone else just got a t-shirt, I had a broken nose to show for it too.

I've only been training since Feb 06, so this list shows either what a klutz I am, or how determined!

1. Badly sprained wrist from not knowing how to break fall while a yellow belt.

2. Several broken/cracked/sprained toes (depends on what shade of black they are!)

3. seperated shoulder from doing class, and judo rolls, outside while an orange belt

4. cracked shin bone from blocking a kick at sparring

5. cracked rib from nice spin side kick at sparring (wasn't wearing a chest guard!...stupid me!)

6. bruised rib from getting fallen on during a takedown

7. large hemotoma that doesn't want to drain from getting kicked in the same place as the cracked shin...waiting 2 weeks to see if it gets better before I get a referral to a ortho...I LOVE my family doctor...when I got the cracked rib, my husband said: "What can she do to avoid this next time?" His answer: "Block better!" ROFLMAO!!! (Of course...laughing HURT!)

8. HUGE buise (from mid forearm to near shoulder) from blocking a roundkick...at sparring......I'm off sparring for a few weeks....

On the other hand...I've never been in better shape in my LIFE!!!!! emoticon

I fractured my right thumb about 10 years ago, because my hand was not closed tightly enough, and a well placed block broke it. Never got it taken care of so it gives me trouble every now and then. other than that a couple of pulled muscles, twisted joints, and lots of bruises but nothing major yet, Although with my current
desire to do competitive breaking that may change :(

I have broken a rib when someone landed on me really hard after they executed a good throw.

I have broken the ball of my foot when it collided with another person's foot.

I've earned tendonitis in my right shoulder from too many unskilled throws when I was just learning to throw.

I've torn my hamstring when someone induced me to touch my forehead to my own foot, I don't bend that far!

While these may sound serious, none of them were/are very bad and I really don't have much in the way of lasting discomfort from any of them.

My injuries are not martial arts related but prevent me from doing martial arts!My art is iaido, japanese sword fighting.I got tendovaginitis from bow shooting training. No iaido.
I got a tiny bit injured when i was doing fitness, nothing much but then i had to carry a heavy suitcase around for a long time one day. The next day could not get my arm above shoulder level. Been out of action for 3 months now and my physiotherapist predicts it will take some more time. So also beware of everyday life hindering your martial art career...
A tip for anyone who has tendon trouble. A yoga teacher told me that you can take water treatment.Apply a towel you make it wet in warm water and apply it to the area 5 times, change the water and appy cold towel to the area.Won't do the trick overnight but can cure even old iritations. I am on it right now.Everybody get well soon or stay healthy!

I've been doing TKD for more than a year and have cracked two toes (not from sparring though! From tripping over my gi!!!LOL) and did some SERIOUS damage to my groin muscle from trying to kick too high without stretching.

I'm sure my injuries as a white belt don't compare to some of you who have been at this for a while.
I'd like to hear your litany of disasters.
