After 2 months I have returned to studying judo again. My instructor's original dojo closed down due to poor maintenance and the landlord raising the rent. Now I am back and he and I have talked about it. He still wants me to consider competing. It still isn't in me though but I will see.

In traditional judo, you only promoted based on w inning in tournaments. That may have changed over the years. Tournaments are a way of applying all you have learned in a safe environment. I look at them as a learning experience, rather than getting big trophies.

After 2 months of missing it I have returned. The main reason is that the dojo closed down due to the landlord not keeping up the maintenance per the city code. My instructor was forced to use the base gym and the only available time slot offered. This time slot however was during my working hours and by the time I finished work it left 30 minutes of training time. Fifteen minutes of that was just driving to the base itself. We have talked however about the competition side.

Congratulations on your black belt!

I'm shooting to test for mine in December. I've got the pushups down now, and only 40 seconds away from the run time. I have to put together a 2 minute demo and wrap up the last few techniques.

Original SW on 1/1/11 - 204.4 lbs.
Original GW on 9/1/11 - 134.5 lbs
Original GOAL ACHIEVED! 70 lbs. banished!

Time zone: EST

New SW on 1/1/19 - 204, back to the very beginning
New GW by 12/31/20 - 135

Mind the Gap! between what we know we should do and what we actually choose to do.

Congratulations on achieving your black belt. I am not there and haven't really done any preparations for it. My instructor is currently focusing on teaching both his current groups techniques for some upcoming tournaments in October. He has been hinting for me to see if I can get those dates off from work. I have been ignoring those hints.

We don't have to compete except when we pass our black belt test, and it's not so much of a competition as it is a showing of new black belts, in the Black Belt Spectacular. Though we do have to go on a mandatory Wednesday night every three months to promote. (If you honestly can't make it you can reschedule.)

(I made black belt today. :D Jus' sayin'.)

So far I am reading that my current instructor is the only one really big on tournaments as part of the promotion process. I really appreciate the feedback from everyone because it gives me something to think about.

Oh my...I am sorry to hear this...each school has their own set of rules on how they run things...I have never heard of anyone requiring a student to go to a competition or they can not promote...My school you promote based on your skills as well as other inner componnents... emoticon

I took jujitsu for awhile as an extra class at my karate school and we didn't have the heavy emphasis on tournaments.

Hey team! I am enrolled in a judo class and for the most part I like it. My one stickler is that my instructor is always telling me to attack more. Now he is very big on competition. I mean he traveled to Miami for the World Judo Cup and leaves today for tournament in Dallas. In class he is always talking getting someone ready for the next tournament. Now I know me and I don't particularly compete in tournaments. I don't attack people period it is just me. However I have heard a few of his guests mention that their instructors wouldn't promote anyone that hasn't gotten so many tournaments under their belt. Does this sound typical to anyone?
