Find the festival at ‘Blauwbossen’, Hoogstraten (Belgium), in big tents, marquees and in open air. Switch out your GPS and just follow the music. Just kidding, follow the road signs to the festival site. They will directly guide you to the free parking area, which is really close to the festival.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Wednesday June 4, 2014 - Yesterday, the world’s second largest global credit rating agency, Moody’s, downgraded Barbados three rating notches to B3 from Ba3. Moody’s attaches numerical modifiers to each generic rating classification, so Barbados is now at the lowest possible rating (meaning its obligations are considered speculative and subject to high credit risk) before the C category (the top in that category, Caa obligations, being judged to be in poor standing and subject to very high credit risk), with the next categories down being ”very near” and actual default respectively.

The downgrade reflects four main drivers. Read more by clicking on link.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Wednesday June 4, 2014, CMC – The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies says it has embarked on a project to install instruments which will improve understanding of the effects of strong earthquakes in the Caribbean.

Under the project, which is being funded by the Caribbean Catastrophic Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), 12 instruments are being installed as part of a regional project which aims to establish a core network of strong motion instruments in the Eastern Caribbean and Jamaica.

The SRC operates the largest seismograph network in the Caribbean which provides information on the location, depth and magnitude of earthquakes.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, Tuesday June 3, 2014, CMC – Finance Minister Bob Richards has described the move by Fitch Ratings to downgrade the country’s credit rating as “disappointing,” although not unexpected “given the high level of debt accumulated since the financial crisis.”

In its commentary on Friday, the international agency said Bermuda, which has been in recession for more than five years, has a weak fiscal position.

Although Fitch believes government’s policies have led to “improved business confidence”, the agency says there are risks to the finance ministry’s debt-reducing strategy, given its partial reliance on a return to economic growth.

Fitch expects zero growth in the Bermuda economy this year, but a one percent increase in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2015.

BUSHY PARK, Barbados – It was a race that the world of motorsport was eagerly awaiting, and Top Gear Festival Barbados didn’t disappoint. For the first time ever, race ace Lewis Hamilton, took on Gymkhana star Ken Block on the beautiful island of Barbados. The all action head-to-head took place at the new Bushy Park Circuit at Top Gear Festival Barbados, which made history this weekend by hosting the first Caribbean round of the Global Rallycross Championship.

Lewis Hamilton, at the wheel of his Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One car, took on Ken Block in his Global Rallycross car on the Bushy Park Circuit and rallycross course.

The question on everyone’s lips as the engines started up was: Who will come out on top in a full three-lap race? Head to head, which is actually faster -- a rally car or an F1 car? The answer may have seemed obvious, but when the race began between two of the best drivers in the world with the rally car on a shorter rally track, it really was anyone’s guess.

The crowd was not disappointed. It was world-class entertainment from the start, with the two racing superstars going head to head around the track. It was a nail biting finish and in the end there was nothing between the two cars as they crossed the finish line in style, with a sequence of donuts to create the perfect photo finish.

SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic (AP) — They suffer searing headaches, a burning fever and so much pain in their joints they can barely walk or use their hands. It's like having a terrible flu combined with an abrupt case of arthritis.

Hospitals and clinics throughout the Caribbean are seeing thousands of people with the same symptoms, victims of a virus with a long and unfamiliar name that has been spread rapidly by mosquitoes across the islands after the first locally transmitted case was confirmed in December.

http://news.yahoo.com/painful-rapid-spre
ad-virus-caribbean-040106421.html

"You feel it in your bones, your fingers and your hands. It's like everything is coming apart," said 34-year-old Sahira Francisco as she and her daughter waited for treatment at a hospital in San Cristobal, a town in the southern Dominican Republic that has seen a surge of the cases in recent days.

The virus is chikungunya, derived from an African word that loosely translates as "contorted with pain." People encountering it in the Caribbean for the first time say the description is fitting. While the virus is rarely fatal it is extremely debilitating.

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Monday April 14, 2014, CMC – The Grenada government says it has entered into an agreement with the Washington-based Carbon War Room (CWR) as it seeks to lure investors in renewable energy.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell signed the expression of interest with the CWR, the brainchild of British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. It is led by the former president of Costa Rica, Jose Maria Figueres

Mitchell said that Grenada was seeking solutions to the high electricity prices faced by Grenadians which was due, in part, to the high cost of imported diesel fuel.

He said the efforts by the Carbon War Room would be an important strand of an existing strategy already being developed by his administration.

Mitchell acknowledged that “green” renewable energy held the possibility of lowering the island’s electricity prices.

NEW YORK, United States, Wednesday April 16, 2014, CMC – Caribbean banana producing countries have been warned to be on their guard against the introduction of the fusarium wilt disease regarded as the most destructive to the banana industry.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said that the disease has already spread from Asia to Africa and the Middle-East, and is now “menacing” the Americas.

To raise awareness, the FAO said the issue will be on the agenda of a series of upcoming meetings in Kenya, South Africa, and Trinidad and Tobago, with the aim of addressing a range of issues related to TR4, including developing action plans for its prevention, monitoring and containment.

The FAO said while the banana crop is vulnerable to a number of diseases in various parts of the world, including the Black Sigatoka disease, Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW), Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD) and Fusarium Wilt, Fusarium’s soil-borne nature makes it “especially challenging”.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Tuesday April 15, 2014, CMC - Sprint superstar Usain Bolt says he is confident he can smash two records he set five years ago at the World Championships in Berlin.

The 27-year-old vowed to lower the times on the 100 and 200 metres after he resumed training at the weekend following an injury.

Bolt’s records stand at 9.59 and 19.19 for the 100 metres and half lap respectively.

“I have discussed with my coach what it will take to lower these records, and he thinks it’s very possible,” said Bolt, who is coached by Glen Mills at the Racers Track Club.

“I trust my coach completely, so if coach Mills says they can be broken, then I know I can lower them.”

Bolt’s manager Ricky Simms had reported that his foot was sore a few weeks ago.

However, the five-time IAAF World Male Athlete of the Year said he is not bothered by the setback and that he expects to be back to his best soon.

“(The injury) is nothing serious … my experience has taught me that that’s just the nature of the sport,” Bolt told The Gleaner.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday April 11, 2014, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government says five days of funeral services will be held to honour the life of former president Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson who died earlier this week after a prolonged illness.

National Security Minister Gary Griffith, who is chairing a committee planning the funeral service of the 87-year-old Robinson, said the former prime minister, would be laid to rest at the Scarborough Methodist Cemetery in Robinson’s homeland of Tobago.

Griffith told reporters at the end of the weekly Cabinet meeting on Thursday that there would be two funerals for Robinson over the five-day period, but it has not yet decided whether the services in Trinidad and Tobago would take place between April 29 to May 3 or from April 24 to April 28.

The final dates for the funeral will be made public after consultation with Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and Robinson’s family.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday April 10, 2014, CMC – Prominent Caribbean academic, Professor Norman Girvan, died in Cuba on Wednesday, three months after he became paralysed following a fall while hiking on the Caribbean island of Dominica. He was 72.

Girvan, the former secretary general of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), was also Professor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Director of the International Relations Institute at the St. Augustine campus of the UWI, Andy Knight, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that Girvan had been flown to Havana for medical treatment and was due to have undergone an operation to ease the pain on his spine.

“We were still hopeful that perhaps at some point he would have been strong enough to get the operation done and that would release the pressure on his spine,” he said, adding that the “vertebrae was crushing the spinal chord…and bring back some of the movement in his body.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Tuesday April 8, 2014, CMC – Jamaica has called for a regional approach to the fight against the introduction and spread of the chikungunya disease.

Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson participating in a briefing to launch World Health Day 2014, which is being observed Monday with the theme “Small Bite, Big Threat” said there is no treatment or vaccine for disease spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and the only effective means of prevention is to protect individuals from mosquito bites.

Symptoms include a sudden high fever, severe pain in the wrists, ankles or knuckles, muscle pain, headache, nausea, and rash. Joint pain and stiffness are more common with chikungunya than with dengue.

WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Monday April 7, 2014, CMC – A new study by the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) and the Inter-American Dialogue has shed light on the financial behavior of Latin American and Caribbean migrants, finding that there is need for formal savings products for remittance clients.

The IDB said while remittances remain one of the largest cross-border flows to Latin American and Caribbean, totaling more than US$60 billion annually, the resources “still contribute little to formal household savings for poor and vulnerable households, highlighting the importance of banking remittance clients.”

The study, “Economic Status and Remittance Behavior among Latin American and Caribbean Migrants in the Post-Recession Period,” was commissioned by the MIF and carried out by the Inter-American Dialogue.

It is based on a 2013 survey of 2,000 migrants from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean living in five major US cities.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Tuesday Aprril 1, 2014, IPS - Guyana is shaping up to set a gold standard for the Caribbean in implementing a national energy efficiency strategy to curb greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels."Energy efficiency is the main method of fighting climate change and its impact [is global] since unclean energy is the main contributor," the associate director of the Energy Resource Institute (TERI) of India, Dr. Rudra Narsimha Rao, told IPS.

"While inefficiencies in the energy sector are a global challenge, Guyana's efforts can better position it to battle the devastating impacts of climate change," added Rao, whose group is helping the country to reduce energy costs in its sugar and rice sectors.

TERI is collaborating with the government under the framework of its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) to carry out an energy audit of the industrial agricultural sector. Findings and recommendations were handed over to key stakeholders on Mar. 24.

According to the World Bank, energy efficiency measures can reduce carbon emissions in some cases by as much as 65 percent.

Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) researchers estimate that the region could reduce its energy consumption by 10 percent over the next decade and save tens of billions of dollars by adopting existing technologies to increase efficiency.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday March 21, 2014, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries are being urged to establish regional standards for “clear, consistent, food labeling” while also banning, or at least limiting, the marketing of energy dense, high salt, foods and beverages to children.

The recommendations are contained in an 80 page report released at the Second International Conference on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) of Children and Adolescents which ends here on Friday.

The report notes that while most Caribbean countries have played a significant role globally in advancing the response to NCDs, “there are no national policies against advertising of unhealthy foods to children or against the harmful use of alcohol”.

It said also that no CARICOM country has national policies or major initiatives aimed at reducing salt intake of the population which has been shown to reduce blood pressure which is a major problem among Caribbean people and a major cause of heart disease.

Professor Nigel Unwin, one of the authors of the report titled "Responses to NCDs in the Caribbean Community", said that it outlines the response of governments and regional organizations, such as CARICOM and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), to the NCD epidemic that’s taking place in the Caribbean.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Tuesday March 18, 2014, CMC – The Barbados government says it intends to sell off some assets as it moves to reduce the fiscal deficit by March next year.

Finance Minister Chris Sinckler presenting the Appropriations Bill in the House of Assembly on Monday announced a raft of new tax measures, including an increase in gasoline prices and the sale of the Barbados National Terminal Limited to help ease the financial burden facing the Freundel Stuart government.

In an immediate response, Opposition Leader Mia Mottley warned Barbadians they can expect more taxes to be imposed during the coming fiscal year as a result of the revenue-raising measures announced by the Finance Minister.

She described the new revenue-generating measures as an ambush, adding that the proposed new energy taxes comprising the removal of the subsidies on diesel and a BDS$0.20 cents (One Barbados dollar = US$0.50 cents) increase in excise taxes on gasolene from April 1, will in reality also affect households.

Sinckler told legislators that in the period 2005-6, subsidies and transfers were estimated at BDS$782.1 million increasing to as much as BDS$1.137 billion by 2007-8. He said the figure increased by another one billion during the 2009-10 period.

NEW YORK, United States, Monday March 17, 2014, CMC – Caribbean American Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke has commended United States President Barack Obama for ordering a review of deportations to the Caribbean and other countries.

In a recent statement, the president said the removal of undocumented immigrants should be done more humanely.

“I believe that President Obama has heard our call to review his administration’s policy on deportation,” Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) on Saturday.

“President Obama had said that we must have a ‘humane’ policy on immigration, and I sincerely hope he will take action to address the existing policy of inhumanity,” added Clarke.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Wednesday March 12, 2014, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders say they have had a “very successful” two day inter-sessional summit here, completing a 20-odd agenda and implementing policies and strategies that would ensure the future socio-economic and political development of the region.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is also the CARICOM chairman, told reporters late Tuesday night that the summit had dealt with a number of matters regarding the further development of the 15-member regional integration grouping, ranging from information communications and technology (ICT) to a future trade agreement with Canada.

“We had a very successful conference we had 20 odd items on the agenda and we completed the agenda,” he told reporters adding that high on the agenda was the ICT sector which regional leaders agreed “should take place in tandem with the reform process of the region for the years 2014-19”.

WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Tuesday March 11, 2014, CMC - From apps to fight rising crime levels to e-learning tools for pre-school and up, the World Bank says a prodigious talent and a depth of ideas reside in the Caribbean.

The Washington-based financial institution said it’s a potential that could secure the economic future for the region, and, more specifically, valuable career opportunities for the youth.

The bank said a central part of the recent Digital Jam 3.0 conference in Jamaica was an opportunity for the shortlisted contestants to pitch their app ideas to industry leaders from across the world.

“But they weren’t just there to listen but to act, and so while the finalists put the finishing touches to their presentations, the Caribbean’s private sector met to begin the process of creating the sub-region’s first angel investors network.”

The World Bank said currently access to finance is a major barrier for entrepreneurs across the spectrum, adding that such a network would work to “revolutionise investment and access to finance for wannabe tech startups, as well as give the wide Caribbean Diaspora a clear route into investing back into the region.

SOPOT, Poland, Sunday March 9, 2014, CMC – Reigning World and Olympic 100 metres champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica won her first World Indoor medal when she ran a world leading time of 6.98 seconds to capture the gold in the women’s 60m final here on Sunday.

Fraser-Pryce, among favourites in a highly anticipated match-up against rivals Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast and fellow Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown, exploded out of the blocks to win the title in a world leading and personal best.

Campbell-Brown, who won in Istanbul two years ago, was fifth (7.13) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye was sixth in 7.16.

Fraser-Pryce, the triple gold medallist from the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, now joins Campbell-Brown as the only women to win world titles in the 60, 100 and 200m.

“It’s an amazing feeling of grace. I’ve never done the indoor championships before and I finally did it and it and I won,” she told reporters.

NORTH STAND, Antigua, Thursday March 5, 2014, CMC – England survived a threatening century from Denish Ramdin to beat West Indies by 25 runs and clinch the series two-one at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Wednesday.

Ramdin inspired a fantastic lower order comeback after a typical top order batting collapse with a career best 128 that almost denied England of series glory.

The Trinidadian wicketkeeper was running out of partners but kept the match alive with his superb knock in which he plundered the bowling before he was bowled; leaving the hosts 278 all out after England posted a sizable 303 for six.

Joe Root struck his first ODI hundred to anchor the innings while Josh Buttler fell a run short of his maiden England century after West Indies won the toss and asked the Englishmen to bat first.

Root endured the pain from an early blow on his thumb to score 107, highlighted by a 175 run partnership with Buttler while Moeen Ali contributed 55 as England secured their first limited-overs series triumph since February 2013.

NEW YORK, United States, Thursday March 6, 2014 – Belize’s Ambergris Caye has retained the title of world's best island for the second year running in TripAdvisor’s 2014 Travellers’ Choice Awards.

Placing second, and clinching the two top spots for the Caribbean, is scenic Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Ambergris Caye is acclaimed for its flawless beaches, extensive limestone caves, and tracts of lush tropical rainforest dotted with waterfalls.

The western Caribbean island is also a scuba divers dream, with the Belize Barrier Reef – the world’s second largest coral reef – and the 400-foot-deep Blue Hole packed with sea life and stalactites.

According to TripAdvisor, it’s not overcrowded either, with "just enough amenities to make it exciting, but not so overdeveloped that you’re tripping over flip-flopped tourists."

TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice island awards are based on the most highly rated attractions, hotels and restaurants listed for each island on their website over a 12-month period.

ROSEAU, Dominica, Tuesday March 4, 2014, CMC – A 20-year-old schoolteacher, Francine Tiffany Baron, was crowned “Miss Dominica” as Carnival activities continued at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on Friday night.

Ms Baron won the awards for best swimwear, best performing talent, best response to question and best in costume.

She outshone Donella Riviere of Roseau who placed first runner up, while Octavia Prosper of La Plaine placed third.

Seven young ladies participated in the competition with Ms Baron saying the journey to the throne was “extremely difficult” and that her months of hard work had paid off.

“It feels so exciting that the months turned into days and the days into hours and I am now finally sitting here and my hard work has paid off. I feel really relieved and I can sleep well tonight,” she told reporters, adding that her victory underscores the fact that people from Grand Bay, south of here, can reach their highest achievement.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Monday March 3, 2014, CMC – Roderick “Chuckey” Gordon won the one million dollar (One TT dollar = US$0.16 cents) prize in the Calypso Monarch crown here on Sunday in a competition that likely signal the end of an impressive career by a longstanding veteran and former multiple winner.

Gordon overcame a strong field of 12 that included three former monarchs, to lift the title with his political rendition “Wey You Think” and the social commentary “Wedding of De Century”.

The results may have also signaled the end of an illustrious career for Dr. Hollis Liverpool, who was seeking to win his ninth crown, but had to settle for fourth place with his tunes "Ah Miss De Bards" and "De Guest List".

Former monarch Winston Rawlins (Cro Cro) placed eighth while defending monarch Eric Taylor (Pibnk Panther) placed one spot from the last place that went to Roger "Bodyguard" Mohammed, whose song “False Papers” had generated much controversy leading up to the competition.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday February 27, 2014 - Barbados is at one of the most significant cross-roads in our history. Our fiscal deficit due initially to the fallout we experienced after the 2007/08 worldwide financial meltdown has been compounded by the rapid build up of debt required to fund the fiscal deficit. There are choices made by both administrations in the past which have contributed to the situation we are in. I will not be addressing those issues as there are not pertinent to the solution recently proposed by Dr. Estwick.

The following were my initial thoughts which I shared with some of my colleagues on Facebook on the morning of Saturday February 8th when I first saw the article about the proposal in Barbados Today. “I have a couple quick observations. As structured, this loan would create an asset of US$5 billion and corresponding debt of the same amount. He is recommending that we pay down all existing debt as it comes due from these funds. At 4% it adds about US$289 million a year to our debt service cost. However since it would be on deposit with interest paying institutions or invested in series of instruments that match the debt maturity profile of existing debt, the effective borrowing rate is zero. This means that we can immediately cancel the Credit Suisse facility and pay off all existing debt falling due this year and replace that component of our debt with new debt which costs us a maximum of 4% and over a much longer term.”

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday February 28, 2014 – Powerhouse vocalist Tessanne Chin, who outclassed the opposition to win season five of NBC’s singing contest The Voice in December, heads the list of six first-time Jamaican acts slated to perform at the 10th Digicel Barbados Reggae Festival.

Chin, who recently inked a deal with one of the world’s largest talent agencies ICM Partners, will light up the stage at the festival’s eagerly anticipated Reggae On The Hill event on Sunday April 27, when the reggae-fusion artiste will deliver her first major performance in the Caribbean outside of her native Jamaica since winning The Voice.

She will perform at the event that represents the festival’s grand finale alongside her countryman and Barbados’ favourite “uncle” Beres Hammond, who returns to the festival after a five-year break. They will be joined by fellow Jamaican Chronixx, who will be making his festival debut.

The Jamaican posse will ride high on Friday April 25 when Sanchez, Frankie Paul and Admiral Bailey share the stage with Fab 5 and John Holt for Vintage Reggae Show And Dance at Kensington Oval.

Perennial dancehall favourite Lady Saw, along with Stone Love, will make their debut appearances at the Reggae Beach Party together with repeat act Idonia on Monday April 21 at Brandons beach.

NEW YORK, United States, Thursday February 27, 2014 – Barbados’ pop princess Rihanna has scored a hat-trick with Vogue, making her third appearance on the front of fashion's Bible for its March 2014 edition.

The third time seemed to be the proverbial charm, moreover, with the Diamonds girl looking relaxed and happy on the latest edition unlike her two previous Vogue covers (April 2011 and November 2012), in which she gave the camera plenty of attitude to work with.

The Stay star, who celebrated her 26th birthday last week, proved that less can be more in a pair of faded, appliqued jeans and a transparent, mesh fringe top by Louis Vuitton, while retaining her simple, pixie cut hairstyle on the cover.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Tuesday February 25, 2014, CMC – The Commonwealth is seeking to establish a trade facility that would benefit Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma, has said.

Sharma, who held talks with CARICOM chairman and Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves on Monday, said that the facility would provide to small states a facility which larger economies enjoy.

Sharma said his talks with Gonsalves, focused on economic issues, trade, the environment and disaster response and had been planned to coincide with the CARICOM inter-sessional summit that has been postponed to March 10-12.

VATICAN CITY, Rome, Monday February 24, 2014 – Haiti’s first-ever cardinal, Chibly Langlois, has vowed to “bring the reality” of his earthquake-ravaged country “into the heart of the Vatican.”

Langlois was one of 19 who were formally appointed to the Catholic Church’s College of Cardinals on Saturday at a ceremony at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The 56-year-old was first named in an announcement by Pope Francis on January 12, the anniversary of the massive earthquake that shattered Haiti and from which the French-speaking Caribbean country is still struggling to recover.

Four years after the 2010 earthquake killed 250,000 people and devastated the country and its infrastructure, nearly 170,000 Haitians remain homeless and impoverished.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday February 21, 2014, CMC - A world economist has suggested that the upswing in the global economy will filter down to the Caribbean.

Dr. C. Fred Bergsten Director Emeritus of the Peterson Institute, an international Economic think thank - told the first ever Caribbean Economic Forum staged by the Central Bank of Barbados on Wednesday that the worst of the global recession has passed and the region must now look to new economic interests as it repositions itself.

According to Bergsten, the Caribbean must release its grip on traditional trading partners such as the United States and Europe and look towards new partnerships and linkages with the world’s emerging markets; Latin America, Brazil and more so East Asia and China.

NEW YORK, United States, Friday February 21, 2014 – Barbados’ pop princess Rihanna has a lot to sing about after winning a multimillion dollar settlement from her former accountant who she claimed advised her to make a string of bad financial moves which saw her lose US$9million in a single year.

The Diamonds star, who celebrated her 26th birthday on February 20, claims she was “effectively bankrupt” at the end of 2009 after bad advice from accountant Peter Gounis of Berdon LLP.

Rihanna, suing under her real name Robyn Fenty, claimed that accountant Peter Gounis and the firm Berdon LLP gave her the green light to buy a US$7 million Southern California house even though she was “bleeding cash” in 2009, according to a report in Page Six.

“The defendants advised Ms. Fenty by e-mail that purchasing a home in Los Angeles ‘would be a good investment’ despite knowing Ms. Fenty was experiencing financial difficulties,” Rihanna’s lawyer Edward Estrada told the New York Post.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday February 20, 2014, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government Wednesday said it had recommended that the Grenadian-born, Dr. Slinger Francisco, the “Mighty Sparrow” be given the country’s highest award.

In addition, the Kamla Persad Bissessar administration said it would also meet the expenses related to the medical condition of the veteran calypsonian,.

Sparrow, acknowledged as the “Calypso King of the World” returned to Trinidad and Tobago earlier this month after recovering from a diabetic coma in the United States, where he has been residing for years.

Prime Minister Persad Bissessar, speaking at carnival activity in Siparia, said that “like so many citizens from all walks of life, I have long admired and enjoyed the impressive work of the Mighty Sparrow whose unparalleled contribution to our music and our culture has been hailed all over the world.

“Your work , Sir, has been studied, analysed, dissected and interpreted by scholars, academics, musicologists, but above all by the multitude of ordinary people not only here in our twin island, and all over the Caribbean, but in so many other parts of the world. Indeed you have justly earned the title - the Calypso King of The World.”

She said Cabinet had agreed “that I recommend to His Excellency, President Anthony Carmona, to confer on you, Dr Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, the prestigious Order of Trinidad and Tobago, the highest national recognition and honour which can be awarded to any citizen.
