Kasey, I am longing for a lake--the only water here is in the community pool. I am hoping to go to Ireland mid September and feast on the green and the wet ;) And I hope to be able to fit into my hiking pants by then too :)

Right now, I'm going through a 'cold patch' - something's gone awry (nothing new with me, unfortunately, lol) and I am always, ALWAYS, incredibly cold. The high today has been 56, plus it's raining, so of course I'm freezing. Hot, you say? AZ heat, you say?

This is a long-winded way of saying, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, ain't? I envy you the heat, hon - wish we could find a way to trade a little of each and balance it out here and there both!

It's hot, hot here but this is Arizona and we expect that. As long as I get out for my doggy walk before 7:30 a.m. and after 7:00 p.m. and stay where there's a/c it doesn't bother met at all. Always the worry about forest fires though.

Okay, so - how ARE we doing today? Things're okay here in Blighty, cold but warmer than yesterday (55 as opposed to 50, so it's an improvement)...

Lin, I think mine was triggered by stuffed up sinuses. Although as I get them almost every month, I don't think that's the total reason.

Halloween has changed considerably since its Celtic origins as one
of the oldest holidays celebrated in the world. Originally called
Samhain, which literally means summers end,
it marks the Celtic new year and is a festival of the harvest and the
dead. It marks the beginning of winter, the dead season.

Well, as I have been writing in my blog, I am trying to get more fibre into my diet. And feeling really uncomfortable for it. But hopefully that should go away as my body gets used to being "properly" fed???

I sure understand that. Working four years of swing shift is what caused me to take an early retirement from the police department. I felt like I had no life! Back then I was doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff to support my son't troop but didn't get to participate in all the fun stuff with the boys.

Yes, that's great when both parents have normal schedules. But in dd's case, her husband is Border Patrol and works swing shifts. He participates as much as he can but he often works nights.

It really is hard to keep up with our children's activities, especially in your daughters case where she has three ... almost four ... children to keep track of. I guess it's "easy" for me because I only have one child.

I know many parents who split the duties ... mom is involved in Girl Scouts with the female children and dad is involved with Boy Scouts with the male children. They try to reserve at least one weekend a month for the whole family to do something together and, to the best of their scheduling ability, have all the children support each others activities by going to watch their sibbling's soccer games, band concerts, courts of honor, etc. That's not always possible because events sometimes overlap. The older kids get and the more involved they get in their extra curricular activities the more difficult it is to get everyone to one event.

Yes, Terrie, that is crummy that some parents see activities as a babysitting thing instead of seeing how it can enrich their childrens' lives and becoming partners in that. A sign that parents today are way too busy and try to keep their children the same way perhaps? My dd has become a co-leader for dgd's Daisy Scouts and goes to my older dgs's soccer games. Don't know how she'll manage as things progress as she is a little over three months' pregnant and there is also one more at home (an almost 3 yo.) But I know she will try to do her best.

The School Night for Scouting event went very well. We recruited 17 new cub scouts, five of them in the Tiger Den. The parents of the Tiger Cubs have to be involved in the pack since each Tiger Cub has to have an "Adult Partner" at all of the activities. So far the parents seem to be enthusiastic ... let's hope that continues. As far as I know, none of the parents of the other 10 cub scouts have expressed any interest in assuming a leadership role, either in their son's den or in the pack. I really dislike the fact that some parents see the Cub Scouts as a babysitting service, dropping their kids off then coming back to get them at the end of the meeting. You never see or hear from them unless they are dropping off/picking up their son.

My friend from the U.P is in Florida with her three year old at Disney,, I was supposed to go, but opted for my new kitchen instead,, I feel that flying all the way down there for four days is a waste,,

yes, as far as the cruise, we sailed at midnight from San Juan, on Saturday night, were at sea all day Sunday,, every other port we arrived in very early morning, spent the days on the islands,, sailed each night,,
You will NEVER forget this trip!!

TerrieJo, sure hope SomeBody takes over the helm this year for you,, if those parents want their children to start outr in this wonderful organization, they must stick theri neck out, and foot in teh door.. Good luck!!

It seems that I'm going backward. I agreed to become the Tiger Cub Den Leader (1st graders) because the pack my son belonged to MANY years ago is hurting for adults. Tonight is "School Night for Scouting", a recruitment drive at the elementary school to sign up boys for Cub Scouts. I've got to be there ... rush, rush, rush!

Val ... I've been on a couple cruises, both to the Caribbean (different parts). The ships sail at night while people are sleeping and you spend your days on shore excursions visiting the various islands along your route of travel. It's lots of fun. Going to England you'll be at sea for days on end, but I don't expect you'll be bored ... there are plenty of things to do on the ship!

Lin ... I'm glad to hear your kitchen cabinets are here. It seems like you've been waiting forever! As for me digging through the snow to get to the airport ... I'll do whatever it takes, in include crawling to the airport. We have SNOW in the forecast for this weekend! This is the weekend we'll be taking the motorhome out to give it a thorough cleaning and prepare it for winter storage.

Hi Ladies ...

I hope everyone is well. Lin, it sounds like you're up to your eyebrows in mother care issues. I'm glad you had a day to yourself today. Even though you weren't relaxing and pampering yourself you got a lot done that needed doing.

I'm getting settled back into my old routine. Red Cross and Boy Scouts ... Boy Scouts and Red Cross. I've been called on to help both organizations tomorrow. First thing in the morning I'm supposed to represent the Red Cross at a United Way fund raiser. Tomorrow afternoon I'm volunteering at the scout office through RSVP+ of North Dakota (a volunteer organization that specializes in tracking a pool of volunteers and dispatching them throughout the area to any organization that needs help for a particular project). The Scout Office asked RSVP+ for a group of volunteers to help with inventory and reorganizing the office. Tomorrow evening is my "regular" Troop Committee Meeting. Busy, busy, busy.

I was gone shopping and researching all day yesterday, but it was actually MY day,, no mom, sick dog, work, etc,,
We went to Discount tire to get our tires rotated for winter, then I went to Krogers, aldi, kmart(researching wheeled coolers), then to Menards, then to a discount grocery store..
bought my two kits for the slide-out wastebasket for base cabinet for kitchen, then went to a friend's home to pick up some drop apples for applesauce..
DD made dinner, I actually watched a whole program on tv for an hour!! What a luxury!!
I feel naughty!!

The dementia dictates that she retreats from socailization to a bare minimum now,, which is a gift to society in itself!!
Being the lazy person that she always was, she is glad to let me take the helm,, and if I do not, I end up paying the piper later, so taking control now is practice, next step is getting POA on her,,
still getting tree down and roofing damage estimates,..
house will be 3/4 mine someday... got to look out for it all now or a big mess for me later,,

Good for you TERRIE for not running over to son's place, esp. as he hadn't shown up himself. If we are going to be understanding about other people's last-minute things and priorities, they need to be understanding about ours. Makes them appreciate us more and it also helps us to get clarity around what WE need to be doing :)

Good Morning All

I've had a busy morning. I got a call from the receptionist at the Red Cross office. She signed me up for two shifts for Hostfest, one week on call for Service to Armed Forces and one week on call for Disaster Action Team. I guess my "vacation" is over.

I spent a couple hours on line at the My Scouting e-learning center getting trained on how to be a Cub Scout leader. I had to take a couple courses I've been drafted to become the Tiger Cub (first graders) Den Leader for the Cub Scout Pack my son started his scouting career in. The pack has been having trouble recruiting adult leaders and they thought that having an experienced leader guide the new parents through Tiger Cubs with their sons would make it easier to recruit them to help at either the pack or den level. Hopefully it will work because I don't intend to take this Tiger Den all the way through to Boy Scouts. That's a five year commitment and I plan to be on the road through the winter in less than five years.

Thanks Val and Lin, for sharing your feelings and thoughts on the loss of your fathers. I know the world won't stop spinning on its axis because he is gone, but part of my little world has been forever changed with his passing.

I was disappointed when my son didn't come over for dinner on Saturday. He had said several times during the course of the week that he planned on spending Saturday with his father and me he wanted to go out to the base with his father to stock up on groceries at the commissary, do his laundry here, stay for dinner, and then go home. He never showed up. He called Sunday to ask me to bring him something from "his" room. I told him I would bring it when I had time, but never made it over there. I was knee deep in other things I had planned for Sunday and just never got to it. I'll bring the item over today, along with the leftover chicken tortilla casserole I made for dinner last night it's one of his favorites. His "growing pains" are going to be my undoing!

Terrie, I understand what you mean about missing your dad. Mine died 11 years ago and there are still times that I want to pick up the phone and call him or on Sunday afternoons hear his voice on the other end saying "How are things in your young life?" But we go on and now WE are the elders. As you are discovering with your son. I am sure he appreciates you more now that you are not around all of the time.

I am glad that you had fun at the jamboree.. Dad's funeral was something to get through, to grieve, needed time ,,, I still think about my dad daily,, he has been dead for ten and a half years..
it takes time to get past the bad parts,, go with it, focus on things you need to focus on,,

that is funny about your son.. he is probably finding it way different than he thought,, laundry, food, access to neat stuff.. privacy.. those things sure jump out at you when mom and dad ar enot providing them...
what a learning experience..good for him..
I know you had lots of adventures, cannot wait to hear them,,
we all have, bad weather is teh time to spill the beans,, when you are snowed in,eh?

Lots has happened around here since my last post ... the National Scout Jamboree was wonderful ... more about that when I have to time to write a blog. My father's funeral was sad which I guess was to be expected. The realization that he is gone has finally hit me, and hit me hard. Some days are better than others, but I am having trouble with not having had the chance to see him one last time and to say a final goodbye before he died. My son decided to spread his wings and moved out of our house. He moved into a trailer on the south edge of town with a couple of his friends. He has been calling daily since he moved out, just to say hi. When he lived here he barley spoke two words to me in a day ... now that he lives with his friends he's become a regular Chatty Cathy on the phone ... I've talked to him more this week than I did when he was living here. Kids ... who can figure them out?

It is a plastic clock that has a series of gutter-like arms with all the numbers on a clock,, there are a whole bunch of little silver balls,, (like ball bearings) that sit there until an arm swings around, grabs teh last ball and places it on teh number of what time it is at that moment..
I bought it for my hubby before we gotmarried,,
guess which lasted teh longest??

I still ahve the clock,,
I think we will ahve to have a garage sale next spring,, the basement is full.again,, I had to let go of things form peopel that have died,, in my life,, could not do it before,,
kitchen renovations begin October 1, so too late to ahve a garage sale after that,, should be in teh forties or fifties and raining by then,, I also have about foru huge boxes of books, I read voraciously,,
I usually ahve about 800 or 9000 every few years, bought at sales or given to me,,
teh treasured ones I keep(Joyce Meyer, Erma Bombeck, etc)
got my car (Cedric) today, took teh rental back..
got teh tree of f moms house, will got to get it repaired on teh roof,
still doing teh demo in the kitchen,,
never a dull moment or a free one..

Jamboree departure in two days and a wake up!

I got a TomTom and really like it. Being a good scout I always try to "Be Prepared". A couple of months ago I contacted the department of tourism and travel in all the states I'll be driving through and requested their latest highway map. I'll those to fall back on it the TomTom steers me wrong.

I plan to take a break every 1.5 - 2 hours, if for no other reason than because my knee will lock up if I go any longer without stretching. I figure I can comfortably drive for about eight hours a day ... add my breaks to that and I'm looking at about a 10 hour day each day. If I find out that's too much on day one I'll know I have to adjust my plan from there.

Fortunately, there are two stops to visit friends (one in WI, and one in VA) en route. If I find I can't make the kind of time I'm hoping to make I have a little wiggle room by cutting my visits with them by a day or two.

Summer has finally arrived here and I've been enjoying the weather. I've also been getting ready for Jambo ... just four days till my departure! I fly to California for my dad's memorial the day after I get back from Jambo, so I won't be around much from 17 JUL - 16 AUG. I hope everyone is doing well.

Lin ... I actually think it's easier to plan and build a house from scratch that it is to renovate one. It's not until you start renovating that you find out that rooms aren't square and things don't fit. My neighbor is going through a kitchen renovation right now and just found out the existing walls, floor and ceiling aren't square, so the cabinets she is trying to install (which are square) aren't going in right. She's having to put in a shim here and there to make everything fit. It's a real nightmare. Home things go more smoothly for you when the work actually gets underway.

My brother called me last night to let me know our father died around 5:15PM California time. I was going to jump on a plane to California, plugged ears and all, but my mother has decided to have my father cremated and have his memorial service in August. That will allow me more time to get over this cold / sinus block, and allow my nephew (who just graduated from Marine boot camp and is now in tech school for his Marine job) to attend. His tech school runs till the end of July and the Marine Corps won't release him from school to attend a funeral now ... if he misses more than three days of school he would have to start the course over. Since grandparents aren't considered "immediate family" the Marines won't consider letting him go now.

So my day has consisted of unpacking my camping gear, packing a funeral bag, unpacking the funeral bag and repacking the camping gear. It's been an emotional roller coaster.

I'm glad to hear you are finally feeling better. Lying down to sleep is a plus. I've had to sleep in the recliner when I was too congested to lie down, so I know what you mean about that.

It's a real mess in Minot right now ... Severe thunder storm (knocked out my satellite connection) ... no travel advised in town by the PD due to severe flooding in the streets ... tornado warnings all around us (none for Minot though).

I'm glad I'm an adult member of the troop and not a scout. The boys are having their summer camp shake down tonight ... bags are being inspected to be sure they packed everything they are going to need then will be preloaded in the bus/trailer tonight so they don't take stuff out after the bags have been checked. Adult gear goes on the bus/in the trailer Saturday morning ... we are trusted to pack properly. I sure wouldn't want to be loading the bus and trailer in this storm.

I'm glad to hear you are on the mend and made it through the day. I imagine you're worn out after going from bed ridden to a full day at work all at once.

What at awful way to lose weight, Lin. I hope you start to feel better soon. Maybe tomorrow is too soon to go back to work. If you're got green gunk running out of your left eye you might scare people to death!

Thank God I don't have allergies. I've had a cold for over four weeks now. Most people can shake a cold in 7 - 10 days ... mine last 6 - 8 weeks; guess it's the lupus that hinders my ability to shake it off. I'm no where as miserable as you, but I'm tired of being sick. Fortunately I rarely catch colds, but their length makes up for their rarity.
