I'm not a knitter or crocheter (is that a word?) but I recently tried wire weaving with copper wire and turquoise stones..... not too bad for someone who doesn't know what they're doing....

Thank you. I really love braiding, and I think the resulting braids are pretty, though a slower way to make cording than other methods I know. They are also really strong--stronger than the same weight leather cording--so as long as you put a suitable clasp on it they are pretty durable.

Oh WOW! Thanks for sharing all the information on this!! I love the images you posted in the blog. The designs are lovely! It kind of reminds me of tatting... not that it looks anything like it! but the fact that you are working with threads. I bet they are really pretty up close. Thanks for sharing

kumihimo is a Japanese form of complex braiding, typically done on some kind of stand. There are a variety of styles of stand, depending on the type of braid etc. that you want to make, but the most common is has a round disk on top with a hole in the center, called a maru-dai or marudai. The braid goes through the hole and the ends that you are braiding go over the edge of the disk and are weighted down by heavy bobbins, called tama. A counter weight on the braid balances the weight and creates the tension of the braid. A lot of modern braiders use foam disks with slits to hold the ends instead of the traditional wooden stand; this is cheaper for starting out and much more portable (I throw my foam disk into a ziplock and into a craft bag or basket when I'm on the go, and I can work on it in the car) but it's harder to maintain consistent tension and it's slower because you can only work 1 thread, not 2, at a time (your other hand has to hold the disk). Personally, I prefer the marudai to the foam disk, even though it's less portable, but I've only done beaded kumihimo on the foam disk.

I've seen beads worked into braids in several different ways. The way I have done is where you pre-string all your braiding strands with beads and then slide the beads down while you work. The braid I did was a round spiral braid with the outside pretty much solid beads. It kind of reminds me of beaded crochet in texture, but because you are braiding different strands it's easier to form patterns in the beads (when I've done beaded crochet it's either been all one color or a random mix, but with braiding you can make each strand a different color if you want). I have also seen braids with a focal bead in the center, and braids that had some beads mixed into the over all pattern of the braiding rather than being solid beads.

To give you an idea of the kinds of braids etc., here's a link to a blog where I talk about some of my braids:

Eileen, I love doing kumihimo! I've only done beaded kumihimo once, but I found it just as fun as regular kumihimo.

I remember doing bead work on a loom when I was a kid...of course it wasn't beautiful stuff, but it was fun and relaxing! I love beaded clothing and beaded purses! I bet your work is stunning! My eyesight is beginning to go (60 now), so much of the up close work is kind of difficult. Glasses are on my list of to do for this summer!

I like all types of beading. I've strung beads, done bead embroidery, and I have a large project on a bead loom. The design for this project was created on Beadtool in which I was able to convert a calendar picture into a full design, with instructions, help in picking colors and a shopping list. So much fun, I've even used beadtool to create a cross stitch design for a wedding sampler which has seed beads worked throughout. I enjoy Bead and Button magazine,(and others) and try to work up some of their designs. I'm always trying new techniques, On my list to try next is Kumihimo and Micro-macrame.

I enjoyed the few wire wrapped projects I have done, but sadly my hands hurt doing it, so I never did more. I agree it does help watching someone show you how to do it, though.

I pretty much stick to stringing, have done a little bead weaving. I really want to try wire wrapping, have tried a little, but would really like to have somebody show me. I'm more of a visuall learner then reading instructions.

Very nice beaded necklaces. I really like unusual beads and those that are strung at various angles. I have done some necklaces with similar beads. I like to string beads, but I also wire wrap jewelry.
I am a 2d artist, so I paint and sell my paintings. It often takes priority over my jewelry making. My father was a jewelry artist, so I picked some of my skill from him.

I am glad you shared with us and posted to the message board! Welcome to the team.

Here are a handful of necklaces I have strung. I am a bead stringer- not highly skilled but endowed with an almost intuitive ability that enables me to put different beads together uniquely and creatively, even making the piece aesthetically pleasing.
It takes me less than an hour to make each one. I always buy strands of beads with just one kind of bead on it because I feel like buying strands that are mixed is cheating because the beads would be already arranged with other kinds of beads in some kind of pattern. I don't want anything like that to stunt my creativity. I wish i was a painter but my artistic ability wanes when it comes to detail and visualization. I am definitely a better header/necklace maker than i am a painter or drawer. At least I found something I'm kind of good at.

My favorite form of beading is probably making beaded flowers, which are the first things I ever made with beads and I still love making them (it's a good thing I give most of them away or I'd be buried under beaded flowers, LOL). Peyote is probably a close second, though. I love working with peyote stitch and the other bead stitches.

I really want to learn bead embroidery. I tried it years ago, but want to try again now that I have more experience with beading in general... and eventually more time as well (I hope!!!)

How am I supposed to pick which I enjoy the most?? They are all fun. One of the things I love about beadwork is the variety. Every day can be different and fun.
If you haven't tried making your own bead, do!! It is so much fun! I just posted some pics of my different beadwork on my spark page. I opened an etsy store this weekend too. I do have a website but it is mostly for gallery items as my turnover is fairly quick. Check it out if you get a chance. peoplesbeaddreams.com

Mine would have to be stringing and wire/chain. Now that Michaels is carrying so many different styles of chain I've been experimenting with all sorts of designs. Right now I'm making lanyards - I started making them when my company mandated we have to wear ids at all times. My office is large, with lots of women, so I have a new market! So that's what I'm focusing on now. Sold about 10 so far, with about 6 or more people interested in them yet. :) Yeah....I could use some extra time, too!

I just love everything involving beads! I make my own lampwork beads and like to incorporate them in my designs.

I'm currently struggling to finish a peyote stitch ring in dichro Aiko beads with a flower made from Swarovski margaritas.

I have a ton of semi-precious beads on my desk that need to be listed on Etsy, yet are screaming to be made into something. Where can I get some more time? LOL!

My favorite would be bead embroidery, because it allows me to use my drawings for the base of designs. I also love DNA stitch for "chain". My main artistic focus is lampworking and polymer clay along with some wire wrapping just because it's fun!!!

I love to wire wrap! And I do the headpins..gotta when you are doing earrings and dangles from the wire wraps. I also do I guess it would be stringing with the bracelets? But I think its more personal with wire wrapping. Now regular stringing and tieing inbetween would be a nightmare for me along with braiding hemp..no way..can't even braid my own hair! emoticon

So, I my journey with beads, I have discovered many different styles of beading. I started off with embroidering with beads. The I discovered beadweaving (peyote, brick, netting, etc). Since beadweaving was so time intensive, I next moved into stringing for something a where I could reach the end of the project in less that a day (often less than an hour) as opposed to some of my other projects that have taken days. My roommate does wire wrapping-but that has never appealed to me. It was like pulling teeth to get me convinced that I should at least be able to do things on headpins. Of all those, it is the beadweaving I enjoy the most. I think that is because of the amount of detail work. After all, I started with bead embroidery.

What beadwork does everyone else do, and which style do you enjoy the most?

Gina
