Hello, Sammysweatpea,

Stop dreaming and just do a 5K!

I challenge you to register for an upcoming 5K and tell us about it. Then go run it and tell us about it. I guarantee you'll develop the confidence you need to start working toward whatever long distance goal you have.

Make the commitment to yourself :)

I officially ran my First 5K race yesterday. I walked a good bit of it because it was hilly with a steep bridge in the middle of the course but I improved my practice time!

It was the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure in The Bahamas.

I ran a half marathon distance today. It wasn't a race, just a regular long run day. I wasn't worried about pace, and I had to walk a few times, but overall I'm just thrilled.

I completed a 13K race today! I'm definitely working toward my half-marathon goal. I was definitely a slow, fat runner. If I had been about a minute faster, I would have taken 3rd place for my age group. If I were 6 months older, I would have taken first place for my age group. I am happy that I was able to jog the entire distance. I even jogged the one hill. It may have been the world's slowest jog, but it wasn't a walk. I will admit to getting a bit teary at the finish. It felt great!

If anyone needs proof that you can do it, take a look at my story.

I hated running--and sports, really, but I did get into athletics in junior high school because it was better than regular old P.E. But then, in high school, I only had to take one year of P.E. so I got that over with and quit sporty stuff for ever. I mean, I was in dance classes, but that was different. Very different.

When I was in my 20s and had access to an on-campus INDOOR track, I started walking a bit, and at one point, I thought, I'd better go ahead and start running, just to get my heart rate really up. (It made that after-workout cigarette that much better!) I started out running the curves of the track, and I ended up getting stress fractures in both legs, making it hard to walk for several months, painful for more than a year, and... well, my ankles still both carry fluid from that fiasco.

Fast forward several years, and I'm back to not getting my heart rate up with walking anymore. I've learned, by this point, about interval training, and I've seen success for those who followed the C25K-of-some-variety program, and I've read up on the program.

And I think, "Nah. If I can hurt myself so badly when I'm in my 20s, how much worse can I hurt myself in my 30s?" So I don't...

until the day I decide to go ahead and try, just for a little bit.

I try, and I try, and I try, and I don't know how people do it. Then, one day, I stop trying so hard. I run more slowly--like, walking speed. I concentrate on controlling my breathing, because that's what's really made it hard, was getting out of breath. And then I try, and I try, and I try.

I do a few 5Ks, and I enjoy them, even if I'm near the end, taking more breaks to walk than chances to run. I start running a little longer, now that breathing is easier and I've figured out (and read) that going slow doesn't hurt anything, and I decide to work on stamina first, speed later. I finally even get to a point where I don't have to think about my breathing, and I don't have to push myself... I run (no matter how slowly) until I NEED a break.

And yesterday, I ran a whole 5K for the first time ever! I really did! Yay, and WooHOO!

Been away a while, Life happens!

I'm cutting way back on my events this year, trying to rest these old bones, plus trying to acclimatize better to heat and humidity. Unfortunately, having suffered heat exhaustion and ending up 2X in ER, that's a tough task!

Today, I ran a 10K that I've done almost every year for the past several, and did my worst time ever for that distance. at 67F and 89%H, even with a nice breeze and overcast skies, I got overheated.

Plus, I learned from the Medics who attended me in the Med tent (I collapsed after crossing the finish line), that my high sugar level (from the electrolyte replacement tummies) contributed to my dehydration. Really? I never knew that.

Moral of the story - listen to your body. I listened, just not enough, I guess!

I ran a 5k on Saturday. Instead of feeling happy about jogging the entire way, I'm feeling down about my slowness: finished in 45.25. I can't seem to shape up and feel happy about accomplishing my goal. Need an attitude adjustment. So I'll be hanging out with SPARKpeople a bit more the next few weeks. emoticon

Good luck to everyone with their race goals this year!!
I plan on doing 2 to 3 5K's this year. I'm starting off with the race against breast cancer in my city in May. Then the one I'm really excited about is the color run in July!
If I get really brave I will do the mud chug this fall. It's a 5k and obstacle course in one... But you get a free drink at the end! It looks tough but really fun!!

I was so excited Friday night, when I managed to go about 2.5 miles in under 30 minutes--working up toward the 5K I plan to do in March. I didn't run all of it--I may not have even run half of it--but I did have longer intervals of running than I ever have before--up to 5 minutes!

Awesome! Good for you! I am very impressed by your 13 5ks goal! I am planning to get 2 under my belt this year. I have done 2 in the past (1 per year) and my only goal has been to run (jog) the entire time. I have been successful at that but very slowly (like last place slow)! It's such a great feeling to cross that line! I am currently working on my speed doing the c2 5k program. Glad to have found this team!

I will not get diabetes, sleep apnea or another obesity related illness due to my lack of willpower or weakness over food. I am STRONG in mind, body and spirit!

Way to go Buffalo gal and everybody! I'm getting back into slow fat running after no exercise and then slow fat walking. Bad time with migraines, etc.

Yesterday my goal was to do the 1 minute walk 1 minute run thing for 1 1/2 miles. It actually felt better the farther I went, and I started doing 2 minutes running at a time toward the end - and did an extra, one-mile loop with just running, no walking, that I hadn't planned at all, just 'cuz I wanted to and felt like it. I stopped feeling cold and just felt good.

I'm actually looking forward to getting out there again!

Another celebration for me. This slow, fat runner set a goal to run a 5K in under 37 minutes at the beginning of this year. Since my record last year was 39:08, I knew it wouldn't be easy. This weekend, I met that goal - 36:13 more than a minute faster than my previous best time and more than 3.5 minutes faster than the same race last year. Still planning more races and praying that I stay healthy so I can keep going.

Thanks Liz. So happy that the weather has gotten cooler and it's so much easier to run. Lots of local 5Ks to participate in in the fall.

Buffalo - that is awesome! I dream of placing in my age group someday. 2nd Place and a PR - that's a triumph for sure, regardless of how many runners.

Congrats!

This slow, fat runner ran a 5K yesterday with only one other woman in my age group, so I placed second. Never thought that would happen. Even though I would have placed regardless of my time, it was another PR for me and it felt great!

I'm late in posting this, but on 3-31 I ran the Monument Avenue 10k, and my time was awesome. 1:07:08! I live in a neighborhood with a lot of hills, so the flat area of the race was easy in comparison. It was a great experience and I can't wait to do more races. I'm still fat, but I am working my way up to not being so slow. :) Just a few weeks ago I ran 2 miles in less than 21 minutes, which is something I have never done in my life. I have come to really love running.

Black toenails are a right of passage for marathoners.
emoticon

They can be caused by running downhill - when your feet are sliding in your shoes and your toes are hitting the toe box. The key to running downhill without injury is to do a slight zig zag, which eases the pressure on your hips and the constant forward sliding of your feet.

You also need to make sure the toe box allows enough room for your feet. But, it's usually the forward motion that causes the problem. Heat and humidity can be factors, as well, as this causes more swelling than in cooler weather. It's really important to make sure your shoes are properly fitted, too.

I've never had to do anything to pop the blisters under the toenails. My routine is to cover the injured toes with blister bandages, the kind with a bubble of antiseptic ointment, over and across, changing the bandage when necessary. It may take weeks, to months, but the damaged nail will eventually fall off, revealing new nail growth. Doing this also prevents infection while the new nail grows and pushes off the damaged nail. The new nail will be a little thin and ragged; but, careful grooming, and eventual buffing, will promote strong nail growth.

A friend of mine paints her toenails a dark purple to mask the injured ones, which I think is rather clever. But, I'd rather keep my toenails protected while they're healing, and paint the new growth.

So, be proud of your black toenails! They signify that you've kicked up your running a notch.

Wow, I haven't thought about rewarding myself, just getting that finisher's medal was my reward. I guess I'm hooked, though, because I'm already planning my timed-finish training schedule!

The recovery part is something I'm still learning about. Base recovery -- heart rate, muscles, joints -- was astonishingly fast. This I attribute to partly Galloway method, but mostly to going gluten-free, high vegan diet about a month before the event.

The feet are another story. They were the source of my problem in the event; blistering, black toenails, etc. They were looking better until I did my first post-race run last night and the black toenails are back. Any suggestions?

What matters most is that you finished, good job and congratulations!

Improved time comes with, well, time. Now, you'll be in maintenance mode, doing a few 5-10Ks, perhaps a half marathon, over the next several months. Give your body enough time to rest and recover - it takes a bit longer than you might think!

What reward do you have in mind for yourself?

I do personally perform better in colder weather than warm. Anything above 65F is hard on me, as I suffer from heat related illness. So, below that is good, around 45-50 is great. I've run in sleet, snow, rain and ridiculous heat - yuk! Between 45-50, no wind, and enough cloud cover to keep the sun from beating down and heating us up too fast, is just about perfect. :)

Ran a very chilly 5k on 11/5 and produced a PR and then ran another cold 5k on 11/11 for Veteran's Day and produced another PR. This is the first year that I've raced much in colder temps and my system must love it. Anyone else notice major time differences depending on the temps?

I am excited because I had my 8k today and I did it in under an hour. (58 mins 44 secs) It was a great experience. I am thinking of signing up for a 10k and a 5k next month. Everyone who finished got a medal, so I am really proud I got one!

I finished my second Half Marathon on Sunday. The Girlfriends' Half was in Vancouver, WA, and it was a very nice course and great event. I finished in 3:04, one minute slower than my first ever Half back in July! I'll take it since the Girlfriends' has more hills!

I'm so glad to see this! My WhooHoo! moment this month was to run/walk the Jacksonville Marine Corps Half Marathon in 3 hours 19 min. My first half...but not my last, and I've already planned the next half for in the Spring and I'm doing a 5k next month.

It's not about the speed, it's the fact that you're committed to your fitness.

Do you set the treadmill for intervals? You can start with 1 min walk/30 secs jog, until you can work the jog intervals up to 1 minute (or max 5). With the Turkey Trot coming up soon, you might be able to work up to 2-3 minutes jog at a time.

The run/walk method allows you to build your strength and endurance for the running, while allowing your legs to recover. Also, you'll actually be developing speed in your legs, as you're stressing them to perform better.

Remember to come back with your Turkey Trot race report!

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but I had a WooHoo moment and wanted to share. I jogged a 5K on my treadmill tonight in 47 minutes. I'm kicking myself now, because I walked the first 10min, and I know it could have been faster if I hadn't walked. WooHoo! I step closer to running the Turkey Trot!

Saskatchewan Time Zone

You can not change yesterday - it's done.
You can only dream of tomorrow.
The only day you can change is today.
What are you going to do today to reach your goals of tomorrow?

It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it GREAT

I finished my second 5K yesterday, and I took 1:38 off of my first 5K time three weeks ago! My new time to beat is 44:54 (gun time) but my watch time was 44:50, and then take off the 0:06 that it took me to get to the start line. But it wasn't chip-timed, so I'm "required" to say my time was 44:54. :)

The Kids did the Kids' Dash (75 yards) and the Boyfriend did the 10K in 47:17, and then we all did the Fun Mile afterward. (Boyfriend ran with Friend's husky, Friend ran it barefoot, Kids chased Husky, and I walked it and finished last at 16:22 for my cooldown.)

Yay! :)

(Feel free to use this thread for your "I did it!" shouts! I didn't see an "I did it!" thread for this team... If I missed it, let me know!)
