I still like many of the crafts I learned as a child. Making and painting cookies, panoramic eggs made of sugar, beaded ornaments. I also do knitting and crocheting that I learned from my grandmothers. I wish I knew how to tat. None of my grandmothers had that skill and I haven't been able to acquire it.

I am pleased to say that I have been able to pass on crafting skills to my grandchildren. They have branched out beyond what I've taught them. One granddaughter just had a song she wrote and played put on YouTube. It is "Lullaby" by Aubree Weller

I learned to do the leather in high school. We used the sills at the window because they were marble and strong to hit and stamp. I still have the tools packed somewhere. I also collected Coke bottles for the Girl Scout Troop. Pick it up again for the fun of it, Rawhide.

I did leather carving and stamping. Collected coke bottles to raise the money. Made my Mom a purse and Dad got a wallet and belt. I let a career get in the way of pursuing it in adulthood.

The other night we were eating at Famous Daves and they had plates on the wall that had decals on them. Reminded me of the time I made them.

My mother and grandmothers were all very creative. They passed their skills and enthusiasm on to me. I remember I made a dress for me one summer. I was so proud of that dress I wore it to church. My crafts have generally been quite simple, meant for working with children. emoticon

I learned embroidery from my mother. I still like to do this work and need to do more pillowcases. My maternal aunt always did embroidery work and one time I heard her say, she could not wipe dishes unless there was embroidery work on it. I feel the same way. My daughter had no interest but she did learn to tat from my mother.

I think we were all more creative in our play than we realized. We didn't have TV or organized sports to occupy us.

Irene....that was basically the only embroidery I did.
But when I was in High school, and all girls school and we wore uniforms.
In the sewing class I had to make a summer dress in green and white Gingham, which was our summer uniform. We did it on the sewing machine, had to learn that.
I don't think it was 100% perfect, but I did wear it.
As an Adult, I like Flower arranging, and arranging furniture. But I cannot draw at all, but I did do one oil painting with help, and it is on my wall. I never did another, I wish I could, but can't afford all the art supplies.

Lee the first thing I embroidered was all french knots and they weren't easy to do. It was given to me at school to do. Mom was so mad she said if she gave it to you she can teach you. I still don't like french knots. LOL
I have done a lot of embroidering though including the 23rd Psalm all in cross stitch and it is hanging in my house now.

I can't remember any thing that I really did that was creative, the only thing that took a lot of work and effort was becoming a Eagle Scout. My creative part didn't appear till my 60's when I started to paint.

I wasn't very creative or artistic as a kid. But I remember embroidering a tablecloth for my Mum ( english spelling ) in cross stitch. I was very proud of it , and she did use it. and loved it.

When I was about 9 year old, I wrote poems and kept them in a notebook. I still have it and enjoyed showing it to my granddaughters, who also like to write poems.

As with many of us, I was a "kid" during WWII. I was not much of a letter writer, but loved drawing pictures of flowers and the U.S. flag. My mom sent these pictures to my father who was serving in Europe. To my great surprise, while cleaning up after his death, I found many of these pictures. He had saved them over 50 years.

I must have been about eight or nine and we were just learning how to sew, we made some awful knickers like balloons, I hated them, but it gave me the incentive to learn to embroider and I embroidered a picture, all brown and in stem stitch of a local church, I was very proud of it and my mother had it framed, it stayed on her wall until she died age eighty.

I was too busy trying to copy my older sister to be creative. Probably the most creative thing I did was make a Christmas poster that made it to regional competition. I didn't win any prizes tho'.

Jean, I was very timid as a child also. We never could do enough to please our dad.
I was very insecure and thought I was the ugliest girl in school.
We also decorated our tree with popcorn and construction paper. Our tree was one we went out and cut ourselves with the help of our dad.
You had a built in, God given talent from the beginning in your writing.
And imagine an indian village out of toothpicks. You are our very talented Jean.

Hi Irene,
I don't know if I just can remember anything outstanding from my childhood as far as creatives go. I was also very insecure back then so didn't have a lot of confidence in myself. The only thing that comes to mind is being post depression time, we made our own Christmas tree decorations out of popcorn and construction paper.
As for true creatives, The first thing I can remember being truly creative in is producing a short Christmas play for our Sunday School Class to present in church. Also in art, I made an Indian village replica out of toothpicks. I was really proud of the outcome. Beyond that my creatives have turned to creative writing.
Jean

I saw something about this in a post and thought what an interesting subject. Let's just tell one thing at a time. I will start.

My dad hung an old tire from a tree limb and we would take turns swinging in the old tire. Cheap and fun.
