I read the John Sandford novels, based in Minnesota. The hero is Lucas Davenport, and all the titles have "prey" in them. Winter Prey, Hidden Prey, etc. One of them was made into a TV movie, I think they were showing it on TBS.
Come on back here, Leona. Its chilly today, but no ice or snow and just a smidegen of fog.

Thank you, Pauline. It was foggy the other day and our son said we could not go out; he did not want to pull us out of a ditch again.
I am not a winter weather person.
I lived in Minnesota for about three years and finally realized, yes, the lakes do freeze every year. My husband kept telling me that they always freeze.
This is from someone from West Texas who used to get excited as a child when we had a little ice on a bucket we had outside that had water in it.
A good series of murder books are by Joanne Fluke who used to live in a small town in Minnesota. She uses a lot of Minnesota winters in her books. Plugging in the car for one.

We went to Menards (like a Lowes or Home Depot) and bought some things then across the road to Kohls to get some things. Crowds were not bad but we went into Cambridge and it is not a large town. Menards has lots of rebates and you use the cradit in the store so we got some tools. I also got a stuffed tiger with a blanket for our great gandson and watches for two of the grandkids.
Snow missed us again and all the ice on the lake has melted.
Have a good day.

Did anyone fight the crowds on Friday? Some friends and I went to visit a Christmas house in Falfurrias, TX, and I bought a couple of things there. Also, I bought some stocking stuffers on line at the Vermont Country Store.
Whoever did go shopping, were the sales really good? The merchandise not picked over? Did you think the crowds were ruder than in years past? The reporters made it sound almost like there was an all-out ware happening.

Alice, I agree on the grandkids. Getting our granddaughters off to school is good for us. No school on Wed or Thurs this week and their mother had them on Monday so we did not have to go over there this week. We will see some of the grandkids and all of our kids on Thursday.
I just made the Rice Krispies Bars for the kids. Sweet potatoes are the oven. I made the mistake of making them one year instead of the can product and now I have to bake them first now and then make the casserole.
I was gone all day and my computer at my office has problems with Spark. I am finishing the message now.
Have a good night.

I plan on enjoying the special foods we seem to have only on Thanksgiving. If I over eat there is always tomorrow. Besides I find with my grandkids around, I'm a lot more active. What good is it to be healthy and strong if you can't enjoy life?

I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Thanks for starting up this thread again. I agree with you -- depriving yourself is not the answer. Eating what one wants, but in moderation ( or maybe a bit more) is the way to go.. I intend to enjoy every bite this Thanksgiving.

Are we all ready for Thanksgiving?
So much is made of watching your calories and eating in moderation that day, do you really think we need to be warned?
What is wrong with eating turkey and sweet potatoes and salad and maybe some other vegetables. I don't think a slice of pumpkin pie will turn us into mindless gorgers, do you?
Relax, have a happy Thanksgiving on me.

Our son has his three daughters every other day and weekends. The two oldest are in middle school and leave at 8AM and the youngest in second grade leaves at 9AM. We drive 40 minutes to get her off to school. We get there about 7:45 AM so se all the girls.
Not all bad as we get to see the kids and spend some time with them.
Our son has to leave the house at 6AM for work.

They now have childrens' performances etc. at the end of the school day. Parents are still at work. There are more grey heads than black, brown, blond hair. I feel for the parents. Less Mom's had to work and most Dad's worked days and the schools held programs in the evenings.

We take pictures for the parents, but that is not the same.

Flutter... that is exactly what I am seeing now while I am at work at the Supermarket, Grandparents taking care of the Grandchildren.
Unfortunately I saw one or two, that have more than they can handle.
Still , time flies when you ar having fun, they hope !!!!!

Like some other grandparents, summer means having grandchildren more hours per day and for some more days a week. We will find the strength.

I think it means the same for most of us at our age.

What I miss is having a vacation. We used to have one at least twice a year.
When we get back to Texas, we are going to try and concentrate on enjoying the rest of our lives, which, hopefully will include a vacation again.

Now that summer is here and school will be over next week I will be spending even more time with the Connecticut branch of our grandchildren. I usually meet the school bus, help with homework, and hang out until one of the parents get home. Now I'll spend 3 days-- all day letting them run me a little bit ragged. Maybe the perks will be to lose that winter cushion of insulation call extra weight.

Summer means more time with grandchildren. This year the last of the older children now has joined the ranks of her working counsins, so all I see much of are the 7 and 4 year olds. The years fly so quickly and the moments are so precious that we must treasure what we are blest with.

For me summer usually means being able to fly home to see our kids (although last year we didn't make it). Also I like the fact that most days you can go for a long walk instead of exercising in the gym.

Snowed again last night although only about 3 inches. The only plus was that the grimy dirty snow was covered up. Still have quite a bit of ice on the walks, but it is gradually melting. Still hope the groundhog was correct.

I hear all of you.
This truly has been a winter slump with the kind of weather we have had. Even here is British Columbia (BC) where I am, we usually have very mild weather in the Valley, but not this year. We had a sunny day Saturday and not bad yesterday, but most days it has been continuous cold rain.
While I was sick, the weather really depressed me but now that I am getting out I am much better.
Hope you all have a better week.

Sharon,
So sorry to hear of your loss. It is never easy to lose a loved one but at Christmas it seems doubly hard.
Our prayers are with your family.
Nice that you could see your daughter on the way home.
Trust this coming year will be a happier time for you.

The celebration of Christmas was muted because a brother-in-law was killed in an automobile accident and we had to go to his funeral on Christmas Eve, which was my mother-in-law's birthday. She would have been 91 this year. But you take the good with the bad and remember that God is still sovereign and will be with us in our difficulties. One good thing is that all of my husband's siblings were there for the funeral although several of us live far away. Another good thing is that DH and I were able to go see a daughter on our way home. We had not expected to see her this Christmas. And we Floridians enjoyed a white Christmas.

Bottom line - my feelings are that I am glad the funeral and visits are over and we are home again. Ready to define our new normal routine - whatever that may be.

Even tho' we were a military family and moved frequently our house was never empty (or quiet) during any of the Holidays. But I was always impressed by in incident in Japan. We lived in Southern Japan near a Japanese military base. We got to know several of the men (young boys, really) and had them to our house frequently. We enjoyed their company and we had a lot of fun practicing the others language. We were totally surprised when it came time to return to the States and an elderly gentleman appeared at our door bearing gifts. It seemed he was the father of one of the young men that visited us. When he heard we were leaving he traveled all the way from Northern Japan to give us the gifts to thank us for being nice to his son.

I thought of another Christmas when my DH was attending a Bible College away from home. An African fellow student was also away from his family. We invited Benji to our home for the week of Christmas. We had a beautiful time of fellowship with him and he shared about his family back in Africa. I was saddened to hear that 2 years after his visit, he was gunned down when he came out of a church in Africa where he had just preached the message. We still have happy memories of having made Christmas special for him that year.

Also every year while living at home on the Army base, our home was filled on Christmas day with people who had nowhere to go. Those were special years for me.

Here's mine:

My husband was stationed in Hawaii. We attended a squadron party and sat next to his friend, Bill. Bill was a single man who lived in the barracks. A turkey was the door prize. Bill won it. He had no way to cook it and his mother was coming to Hawaii for Christmas. So we took the turkey and invited Bill and his mother for Christmas dinner. For several years after that we exchanged Christmas greetings with Bill and his mother, Winifred. We have now lost touch but still have a small booklet of Christmas stories that Winifred sent us one year. Sometimes I read from that booklet to my group at the nursing home. I still enjoy the stories and brightly colored pictures and more than that, the memory of a beautiful day when a stranger became a friend.

Just to get you started on the emoticon emoticon emoticon , I will share 2 stories.
One very cold rainy day while on the way for a hosp. test, I stopped in for a coffee. In the coffee shop was a woman sitting alone talking to herself as if she were talking to a friend. I sensed she might be a 'street person' but not really shabby. I did something I never did before, I felt God speaking to me and telling me to give her $5.00 to keep her warmed up with coffee all day. I waited until I was ready to lead & went up to her and gave her the money. She thanked me profusely & asked for my address to write a thank you. I told her it wasn't necessary that it was a gift from God. I felt so good inside for being obedient to go out of my comfort zone.

The other story is much different. My DH and I were involved with Marriage Encounter. We offered to keep the Clergy couple overnight on the last evening. My DH then took them all around downtown Toronto. Little did we know that small act of kindness would land us in a friendship that has gone on for 16 years. The husband just passed away unexpectedly 2 yrs ago next month. We knew though we couldn't afford it, that we needed to fly from here in British Columbia to South Ohio to attend the funeral. They had become just like part of our family. We attended each others kids' weddings and special holidays.
There is just something about reaching out to others that brings a special joy.

Since Christmas is a special time of giving whether it be gifts or acts of service, I thought I would like to have you share the following:

Whether at Christmas time or any time, can you remember & share one time when you gave to another expecting nothing in return and yet may still be reaping the rewards?

Thanks for reminiscing Sharon.
I so long for people to get back to the simple times of Christmases past.
I see so much stress with people today, especially those in ministry who feel they HAVE to be at everything because it is expected of them.
Let's slow down and practice the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ.

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of my savior. I celebrate by singing carols, attending Christmas programs, listening to Christmas music, attending parties, and giving small, inexpensive gifts to my family. When the children and grandchildren were near we celebrated by having a tree-trimming party. All children who were old enough to want to be involved helped trim the tree and there was no scolding if an ornament got broken. Without the family putting up a Christmas tree is no fun. BTW - with the family, we used to put candy canes on the tree and a few would "accidentally" be broken and the children got to eat those. Christmas morning breakfast was hot cocoa and cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls made by my father before he died and now might be storebought. We stirred the cocoa with candy canes and had a contest to see whose candy cane had the sharpest point. A tradition we continue with only our adult son present is to play the Christmas record we got when we lived in Hawaii, "Mele Kalikimaka". That means "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian. We also attend Christmas Eve church services.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to reminisce. I guess one thing I do now that I am older is remember the old days when the family was still around.

Thanks Sharon for the encouragement.
Nice that you can be there for your daughter. I sure miss my Mom and all she meant to me.

I won't limit myself to a time frame for the emoticon of the day but whenever I have a fresh idea, I will put one on.

Could I ask my praying sparkers to pray for my pastor's wife? She just found out her aunt has only been given a few weeks to live. She just took sick but apparently she has pancreatic cancer.
Thanks in advance for your prayers.
Jean

I love the questions Jean but it must be hard for you to think of a new one every day. What about a question of the week?

I guess I could say I encouraged my daughter on the telephone today. Her DH has been sick for a long time and the doctors could not figure out what was wrong with him. They now have an answer - a ruptured disc. So I guess we encouraged each other. It was encouraging to me to know Dave will get treatment and I hope encouraging to Melanie to know her Mama cares. Also, a friend is having bad knee problems and I encouraged her to take care of herself instead of doing for others, as she is prone to do. Hmmm - I started to write this thinking I wouldn't have a good answer but I guess I do.

I encourage you to keep up the good work, Jean.

I think a time element is not necessary, when you feel a good question, post it. it is fun and a learning experience for all.

Hi Sue,
You didn't miss seeing the emoticon emoticon emoticon
I just hadn't added a question for a while. Sorry for my negligence.
If the group want it I will keep it going but I may not do it every day but at least 2 or 3 times weekly.
Let me know what each of you would like.
Hugs

Here on Spark, I respond to blogs and give support in what ever way I feel is appropriate, Suggestions, support that the person can succeed and compliments to a success they may have. Sometimes the support we give to someone here, may be the only support they get. In my opinion, was of the best benefits, Spark members get is the support from others. It can make the difference in success or failure.

Monty,
Do you walk 8 miles in 1 day? WOW!

I just finished a short walk (2 miles) Still damp here so with the neuropathy, I am taking it easy outdoors. I will get more exercise today when I go to our seniors because I will be helping with the cleanup after.

I like that quote Sharon.. never heard it before but very accurate. I was scrolling thru the site and wondered what all the Q.O.D. was.. then finally dawned on me.. is it still active? I haven't seen any recent ones. I used to like it when they were in the main chats.. but lost it somewhere..

I'm struggling with my wt too. I truly feel it is part of my breathing problem. rather than heart. So am anxious to begin the challenge today and track everything I eat and exercise.. I must do this.

Thank you Sharon
I had a feeling that is what it was. Most of us have for the most of our lives have lost and gained many times. That was the reason that I felt the need for support after I lost 74 pounds. At that point I weighed less than I did in high school and old experiences scared me. Spark was a blessing and when you reach your goal weight, they have all kind of ways to help us maintain. I have now maintained almost 3 years. So, if you want support, I am here.

MONTY68 - Thanks for the encouragement. The main reason I think I would start regaining if I wasn't really careful is past history. I was once in a diet club with a goal of 120. I was much younger then. The club dissolved and my last weigh-in was 120 and 1/4. Over time I started gaining again until my top weight was 158 - way too much for me at 5 ft. 2 in. tall.

I looked at your start weight and where you are now and only 4 pounds to release. Why, at this point would you think you are going to put the weight back on? You have done a great job and I don't understand your concern. You say something about continuing. Living healthy becomes a lifetime commitment, it is not something we quit. I will be gad to have more conversation on this if you want. If not, work , make your goal and then maintain it forever and Spark is there for that part of your journey.

Could some of the Q.O.D.'s be questions about weight loss and healthy living? I can't really say that I have slipped but I may be on the verge. I am 4 pounds from my goal weight and no one looking at me would call me "fat" but I still have an unattractive roll. (Only I know it's there, because I dress modestly.) But I fear that if I don't continue and get to my goal weight I will start going in the other direction. Who wants to give me a hand up? How? I don't know.

Unfortunately I don't believe that the team will be able to motivate unless an individual wants to be helped. I enjoy team comments for support and to know that I am not alone, but the motivation has to come from within.

Good question , I came on SparkPeople after I released 74 pounds to stay motivated to keep it off. I have never lost focus on my purpose. In fact I am so much more motivated and inspired since joining Spark. I joined this team when I turned 70, What can we do to inspire others to remind them of their purpose? I think we need to be active and support others so they can continue in a positive way. I also feel that if at my age I can lose 84 pounds, can show others that people our age can reach their goals and not blame the idea that we are "older"

This program has made me accountable to ME. I don't feel the email group can do any more than just be a wonderful group of people communicating. For me, I have other email groups that I communicate with so I'm fairly quiet on this group, but enjoy reading about everyone. I do have another question for the gourp. I'll put it here in another message.

I am hoping today's question which I have put in 2 places for today only, will involved the whole group. Let's get your participaction. Thanks.

Q.O.D. What do you think we can do on our team to challenge each of us to get back to why we joined SP in the first place? Where have you slipped and feel the team can help you to "stayfaithfully on the weight loss wagon".
