Amy and Isabelle - Elizabeth Strout 3.5 stars

Story of a young teenager and her single mother and the dynamic of their relationship as the daughter gets involved with another person (trying not to give away any spoilers)

In the beginning, the book did too much back and forth in the timeline as well as from different perspectives. Halfway through it stayed in real-time and got much better and get me engrossed to the end even if I had figured out parts of it.

The Plague and I by Betty MacDonald ****

If you need a reminder of how modern medicine has improved our lives, read MacDonald's account of her time in a sanitarium in the Northwest to treat her tuberculosis! She touches on a full range of understandable emotions here, including disbelief, rage, resignation, and grief, but primarily tells her story with a wry sense of humor, like that in her book "The Egg and I," which preceded this one. MacDonald is very skilled at drawing quick portraits of her fellow patients (I'd really love to know whatever happened to her Japanese roommate Kimi), and her narrative with its bravery, good cheer, and lack of self pity is a welcome antidote to more contemporary confessional pieces. A great tonic for anyone who thinks sitting at home in the pandemic has been "unbearable."

Ha, ha, Lady Calico! I really had to laugh at your Jodi Picoult review. The one book club that I remember being in briefly in the last 40 years asked us to read....Jodi Picoult! It wasn't very good.... Luckily, I couldn't make the meeting in the end, and that was the end of that.

I got this after reading a glowing review somewhere, and I did enjoy it, although I'm having trouble really explaining why. It isn't "deep" or profound, but the main character is well-drawn and her struggle to write, despite all the financial, emotional, and practical difficulties of a creative life, rings true. I needed a break from the kind of book I normally read, and this novel did the trick for me. A young, sympathetic, believable and mostly likable heroine. I enjoyed the book quite a bit!

A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult (2*)
A gunman is in a stand-off with the police in a hostage situation in an abortion clinic. The story is then told backwards in an awkward, repetitious manner from multiple POV's. How was this book lousy, let me count the ways--no, better not since there was just too much lousy to cover in a review. This book was abysmally bad all over--characters, writing, dialogue, disorganization--every way a book could be bad, this one managed.
