In recent years, I've read 2 YA books by John Green: Turtles All the Way Down, and The Fault in our Stars, and really enjoyed them. I did read a lot of kids' books when I was young, and when my kids were little, so I don't feel the need to read them now.

Do you read YA or children's books, for yourself not just for your grandkids, why or why not?
Yes, I didn't have much access to kid books when I was young and read mostly adult books I found lying around. In the last few years I've been trying to catch up on the classics kiddielit that I missed plus the more well-regarded ones written during my working adult years

Do you find the inclusion of an animal in novels enhances your enjoyment of that book--if so, your favorites?
As SC's foremost crazy cat lady my answer is too predictable, "oh, yes, CATS!" However, dogs and horses also add a lot. However, I must admit two of the most enjoyable animals in books that I've read recently are Junia the mule in The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek and N'kima the grandiose little monkey in the Tarzan series.

My feelings about book clubs are identical to yours, LADYCALICO! I don't like to be told what to read. I like to read things at my own pace. I do have friends in book clubs so learn about what they're reading, and can add those books to my reading list if they interest me.

Book clubs; what do you like and dislike about them?
Book clubs can introduce me to books I might otherwise not have heard of or read. I also like the IDEA of friends getting together and sharing opinions about books because of the social aspect, but the REALITY of book clubs, not so much. I don't like other people choosing my books and maybe having to force myself to read something I am hating, knowing I will have to curb my acerbic tongue in the discussion so the friend who made the choice isn't insulted. I also like to get my books from the library, and that isn't possible if there's a local group wanting to read it at the same time, thus I will probably have to buy the book.

Oh, fun! I had to look up what the PopSugar Challenge is, but I'm in!

I would go with the quirky. That's right up my alley...
Book by a nomad. Book by a first-time woman author. Book by an author writing for the first time in English. Book originally written in Russian. Book about Mongolia. Book about a kind of art you normally don't like. Humorous novel.

If you were asked to make the list for PopSugar Challenge, what categories would be sure to be on your list?
A Western, a Play, a YA, a Science Fiction, a Graphic Novel, a Fantasy, a book with a cat, dog, or horse as a major character; a book from a detective series, a book written before you were born, a book set in a locality where you live or used to live.

True Crime books are great, too. They are better than the fictional detective novels, but more emotionally upsetting, since they happened to real people.

Do you read non-fiction books, and what is your favorite non-fiction genre/author?
I try to work in several every year, but I am not very original in my choices--I tend to read Bill Bryson, Erik Larsen, and Jon Krakauer. I also am drawn to history books, primarily about the Depression, WWII, the Indians of the Old West.

If I had endless time, what series would I read?
Hmmm.... I'm sure I would put the main texts from all the major religions on that list, but for sheer fun I'd do something like Dashiell Hammett too. Galsworthy? Ford Madox Ford? I'd go back and give "A Dance to the Music of Time" another chance. I'd read all of Mo Yan. And on and on....

Going back to an earlier question.

I spend more time putting books on my to read list than actually reading them. And I rarely go to check it out. I end up spontaneous reading something that catches my fancy.

I love to read but I don't reward myself with enough time to read. The problem is that if I enjoy a book I don't want to put it down.

I would second Agatha Christie. I was at a yard sale and a little old lady had a paperback collection of ALL of Christie's books for sale. I could have had them for $1 or less each, read them, and sold the lot on eBay for 3-4 times that. I kick myself every time I think of it for not buying the whole set.

Someday (I keep telling myself) I am going to read The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I haven't ever started it though...

Heavens to Betsy! you folks are super-readers. Let's go a step further: What book series would you love to complete if you had all the time in the world to read?

Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Shakespeare's plays, Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series, and P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster series

I did the Harry Potter books with my kids (twice!) and the Animorphs series (surprisingly compelling) with them too. And I've read all of Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti books. Then some classics too, if we're not counting correspondence---Jane Austin, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Thomas Hardy, F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Orwell.... Alas, I no longer have the patience to read lesser works by good authors or even "great" works that don't grab me for what ever reason... Life is too short!

I have read everything published by Terry Brooks (starting when I was a teenager a looong time ago). I own hardcovers of almost all of his books in first editions, excluding the early ones that are rare and valuable. I've also read all of Matthew Quick. I am working my way through Stephen King slowly, in publication order, I think I am up to 2008 maybe?

Have you ever tried to work your way through an entire series or an author's complete works? If so, which ones?
I've worked my way through Tarzan, Sookie Stackhouse, Stephanie Plum, Harry Potter, J.D. Robb's ...in Death series, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series, Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, and everything but the latest from Robert Crais.

FITMARY--indeed, great minds think alike. One of these days I want to read Dave Barry's Peter and the Starcatchers.

Thanks! I checked my library's ebook service and they just added The Yellow House, so I was able to get myself on the wait list early and am #2!

Oooo, Lady Calico! Our stashes are so similar!
I really enjoyed Pachinko when I was doing a little Korean mini-series a while ago, and The Dutch House is on my list too. But currently top of my list are The Splendid and Vile, The Yellow House by Sarah Broom, and, because I'm looking for a gentle laugh, Lessons from Lucy by Dave Barry.

Some grammatical things really irritate me: 'graduate high school', which I think should be 'graduate FROM high school' and 'the both of you' which I think should be either 'both of you' or 'the two of you'. My son thinks I am being too picky.
I agree with you too LADYCALICO, on all counts!!

Do you have any pet peeves that make you grit your teeth whenever an author commits them?

Oh, yes indeed! Too Stupid To Live (TSTL) heroines, Historical fiction that plays fast and loose with history, re-writes of stock, generic plots and characters; plot dependent on more than two bizarre coincidences, cop-out, deus ex machina endings; and excess, and gratuitous profanity and sex scenes.

My TBR list has approximately 3500 books, but there are a good number of duplicates. emoticon

When I order books from the library, I do order some from that list, as well as 'impulse' books I've just heard about or been reminded of.
The books I order from Amazon are all from my TBR list.

Do you keep a To Be Read list and if so, how many books are on it?
Yes, it currently has 82 books.

Do you follow it:
No--I usually end choosing a book spontaneously, ignoring my list except to add more books.

Hello! I read very widely and often go for what my children think are "quirky" choices from Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, or Africa. I like to see what the rest of the world is thinking, though I'm limited in most cases to what has been translated into English....
I like historical fiction and I'm usually looking for some nobility or optimism or hope in the narrative. I've been reading quite a bit of biography lately. My favorite novel is Tolstoy's "War and Peace" because it asks big questions that are still of interest. The last "recent" work I read was "City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi" by William Dalrymple, which also provided that historical sweep.
Best to all!

My favorite thing re books is TVs C-Span 2's book program on every weekend.

Discussion: Who are your favorite authors and what attracts you to them?

I like warm, human stories with full dimensional characters that act and talk like real humans would in real circumstances, therefore I like authors I like Kristin Hannah, Wendell Berry, Hanya Yanagihara, Barbara Pym, and Rosamunde Pilcher. Among classics, my favorites are Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Victor Hugo. For crime novels, I am addicted to Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, and Lee Child. I also love a good fantasy writer like Scott lynch, Patrick Roth, Tamora Pierce, and Megan Whalen Turner because their characters are so well-drawn, their stories combine adventure and humor, and their world-building holds together. I read a lot of historical fiction but get turned off if the fiction plays fast and loose with the history. As of last week I found a new love, Bernard Cornwell.

I confess--in my 10 years of membership in Sparkpeople I've never understood or joined a Team Goal before. Today I spent some time reading up on them and concluded, "What fun!" They contribute to a Team spirit and also give you some quick Sparkpoints for taking but a few seconds to check off, after having done something that's good for you. I revamped our Team Goals and added two that can help make your reading more rewarding--a goal to add to Books Read in_____ ____, which involves taking a few minutes to digest your book and think about how much you liked it and why, and also a goal where you can get a Sparkpoint for reading an author who's new to you, thus expanding your world of Books horizons.

Paperbackswap is great! I used it for years when my daughter was small for her books both for school (we homeschooled) and for her pleasure reading. And also some for my own books too. I got out of the habit after my daughter grew up though. Have fun with it!

I joined paperback swap which gives credit for swapping books though you pay the postage to ship them. I used to use another site which had you pay to receive but it went out of business.

We also have a nonprofit that takes book donations. Mostly I try to give them to others to read.

Today one of my staff was concerned that she got sauce on a book I lent her. She was going to replace it. I told her to get a different book instead. Much better.

I cut the cable last year because I have an old analogue TV and cable quit broadcasting in that format--it was either buy a new TV or buy or rent a cable box, and I didn't watch enough TV for it to be worth the extra $$$. But then I'm not a sports fan.
What to do with once-read books--that is a good question that explains why I love my Kindle and library. Donating to the library still seems like the best option--just think of all the happiness that people (like you, when you are a customer!) experience when they pick up a beautiful, like-new book for a song at a library sale. Life gives us few enough opportunities to spread joy so easily.
Of course, you could always lend your lovely books to your friends and then you know you will never see them again.

We finally "cut the cable" so I guess I will be reading more. DirecTV was up to $180/month for our family; we decided television isn't worth $6 per day. We bought an OTA antenna and will sign up for Netflix. I will miss watching the Tigers lose 5 out of every 7 games though.

I went to a local library used book sale today. They had a "Fill a paper bag for $10" deal. I filled a paper bag easily. Five aisles of adult fiction in Hardcover and Paperback all completely unsorted! I could have spent two hours in there, but my sister and nieces were with me so I spent about 20 minutes and only filled one bag this time. They will have other sales, next time I may go alone so I can fill thee bags!!!

Now a good question I have is what to do with all the books I have that I've already read? Most are in very good condition. I could donate them back to the library but to see them sold so cheaply breaks my heart when I consider what I pay for books. I guess that is better than *ack* throwing them away (which I would never do). I have 4 or 5 bankers boxes full that I need to figure out what to do with. I tried a garage sale but people who go to those generally are not readers, I sold almost none. Any other ideas?

Are all you readers familiar with Internet Archive? It is an online lending library consisting of books discarded by libraries which get donated and uploaded to that site. I get almost all the books that I read from there. You can check out their books for two weeks by setting up an account and download the book into it. Because the books are discards, they are usually a few years old, but a lot of hard to find books can be found there...for FREE!

Well, I did it. I completed all 50 categories of the Popsugar Reading Challenge. I don't know why I keep doing that--it always involves reading a lot of lousy books in categories in which I have absolutely no interest. I guess that's why they call it a "challenge."

I am reading the Jean Auel Clan of the Cave Bear books. I have them on my shelf and just decided they would fit some of the challenges on Goodreads Popsugar challenge. I had read the first two years ago and now on the third book. I did start with book one. emoticon

In the high teens today and then it will get cold again.

I'm doing the Goodreads Challenge as well. Find it interesting to see what my reading habits are through out the year.

Glad you found the bonus spins. I got a 3 today.

Hope everyone is surviving these cold fronts. Here in Phoenix it has been unseasonable warm. It is like we haven't had any winter.

I always do the Goodreads Reading Challenge, and it is so much fun to read the end-of-the-year summary.
I have spent close to a week trying to track down the Team Bonus Points. I know I could have messaged one of you and asked, but I love a challenge and am worse than most men when it comes to saying, "I give up; I'll ask!" It was harder than I thought because my search took me through so many myriads of posts complaining about their disappearance--finally I found them and earned the Team 1 point today. SparkAmerica Affinity Bonus Points indeed! emoticon

Been feeling better and am trying to again join the living. I posted a new topic for Books Read in January 2018 so members can share their reading with others in one convenient spot. I did not start any new challenges since I seemed to be the only one who enjoyed them, but if anyone is interested in a Challenge, please let me know. Happy New Year! emoticon

So in another more active group I asked as well and it was suggested that I contact publishers. I did and they said they are not aware of another book. I'm pretty bummed because I really enjoyed the two of the "series". I'll keep a watch out for a third book.

I believe in you.

Hello, I have a question. I just finished a book.which is second in a series but it doesn't appear that there is a third yet. I've tried searching online and just reached out to publishers to see when third will be released (if there will be one). Any other suggestions to research this? The book doesn't say there will be another but I can see where there should be. Maybe I'm just hopeful. Thanks for any ideas.

We finally had a freeze in W. Michigan last night so the ragweed should be on a major decline. That is great news for allergy sufferers, like me who live next to a 10 acre ragweed field. Pollens have been declining anyway and my hay fever is much better than it was, I should be getting more active as my respiratory clears up in the next couple weeks.

I'm glad you are ok from the storm too.

These days even our large library system in Phoenix is in need of the extra money raised by these sales. And these are not just library books at these sales. Lots of people donate their gently read books to help the cause. I met a woman at one sale who had donated 3 big bankers boxes of books and was looking for new ones.

I know I am looking forward to the next sale this fall.

Thanks to BTRFLYDOG and to everyone else who patronizes library book sales. Many small libraries depend heavily on those sales for money to purchase new materials. Plus, the bargains are great!

LADY: emoticon

BTR: emoticon I joined Goodreads a while ago and am STILL trying to figure the site out! The cool thing is that I was able to create a quiz. :-)

I adore library book sales! I'm a page-bender with books I own that I really want to remember what is on that page. Otherwise, I use bookmarks to keep track of where I am.

HAN: emoticon One of the favorite things I did last year was to make Christmas bookmarks out of Christmas cards. Really enjoyed reading a Christmas story during the Season using the bookmarks. :-)

I use bookmarks. I have a bunch, mostly cheap paper ones, but they're fun to rotate. The other day I even found one of a baseball player I'd had a crush on in the early 2000s! My favorite one was a gift from a friend, since deceased, of scenes of her hometown. Her local historical society sold them as a fundraiser.
