A total newbie to Triathlons! I am already signed up and training to do a Sprint Tri on Sept 22, 2019!

Have done a couple of 5K runs, swam on a swim team last summer. Decided that now is the time to push myself further and harder!

Tri is one of those sports... no matter how you did, you can always find something to work on for "next time". Best wishes with the new age group next year!

It went OK. Don't think I swam well, got a PB on the bike (same route as last year), helped by no wind at all! Then survive the run with, what I feel, is a respectable time... well I got up the hill twice, walking since that's faster for me than running!

So that's this years tri done, looking forward to next year when I'll move up an age category.

No matter what, do your race and focus on the finish! I do my 23 Triathlon tomorrow .I did my 1st in July 2013. I focus on pacing to finish! They modify the course, I don't care. I still go with my Plan A! 😉

I do just one triathlon a year, I'm slow and my aim is to finish and run all the 5K (super sprint, indoor swim).
I signed up for one about a week ago (my local) and was feeling confident that I could do a better time than last year (both bike & run times seemed better than a year ago).
Then on Friday they tell us that they've changed the run route. I was expecting a flat 5K and now we have to go up a steep hill, twice. No time to train for hills now. In fact I suspect I'll walk up it as a the only way to get round. And no chance of a PB. oh well....

This is Florida! I didn't name it. I'm just doing it! LOL

Truly, They just dropped the name. I'm doing a one mile open water swim in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday. Then Sunday, I'm doing a Madeira Beach Aquathon 3.5! .Check this out...

Really? BIATHLON? That's cross-country skiing and shooting. Tampa Bay Florida, you're appropriating an Olympic sport term and applying it to a duathlon!

Did you have anything to do with this naming, Monty?

You flying with the Eagles, Barb!

I've taken a healthy attitude about my Triathlons. I spent last year focused on Marathon training. Couldn't wait to get back to my Tris! I've done 1 Du, St. Anthony's Tri in St Pete, Dunedin Sprint Triathlon on May 20, and looking ahead, Top Gun Sprint (my 1st in 2013) in July, and Ironman North Carolina 70.3 Relay in Oct. (I'm doing the 13.1) I'm doing 3 more HMs before the end of the year. I believe that will keep me healthy and in shape!
emoticon
My goal is to establish PRs, and enjoy the intrinsic values of our sports. There are mkany that would rather do longer distance Tris because they find Sprints harder, speed wise. No matter, I do what I feel, as long as I cross the finish line, I win! to date, I have 16 Tris and 16 Half Marathons since 2012!
Stay Strong, Barb!

Totally agree, Monty. Triathlon is about the training... race day is the celebration, the party. In talking with a trainer last year, I described it as "the awesome", when I was sidelined and recovering... my goal for that training was "I don't want to lose the awesome." Always preparing for a comeback.

I succumbed to temptation and registered for the Cornhusker State Games Triathlon, end of July. It's a baby sprint... the swim is "only" 500 meters or so, and its not USAT sanctioned... but it has a warm spot in my heart, since it's the first official triathlon I ever did, back in 2012. I've done it every year, even last year when I was supposed to not be on the bike (not wise, don't do this at home, kids).

Still, just finished the Memorial Lincoln duathlon last Sunday, and on the endorphins from that... "next"!

Way to rock it, Tessa! A bunch of us discussed this last night over "pints!" We all agreed. It's about the finish! Don't tell us, "Well, it wasn't my best race!" Guess what? It will never be! It's about the finish! My close friend, and Florida Triathlon Hall of Famer, Fred, led this discussion. We agree, it's about the training, the finish, and the glory of doing it!
Brava, Tessa!

Upright to the end achieved!
I only realised on Friday evening that the cycle route had changed. Luckily being local I know the roads. The new route is flatter so faster but more traffic.
Anyway it all went well, my sister encouraged me round the run and I finished not last!

That's great!
My tri on Sunday is 1 mile away! My confidence has taken a bit of a hit, I slipped off a curb when running across a road on Saturday, turned my ankle slightly but it seems OK. then came off my bike today and grazed my knee. I think my aim for this tri is to remain upright ot the end....

I've signed up for my local super sprint tri (indoor swim) at the end of May. The swim is fine, I've done the distance on the bike, I'm trying not to run much as I'm recovering from plantar fasciitis. Not sure I could put it all together yet and wondering how best to train from here on. I'm heavier than when I last did one about 18 months ago so I know that will slow me down (and I am working on my weight).
At the moment I'm aiming to swim once a week and get out on the bike once or twice (with a very short jog at the end). I'm doing some strength training too.
Suggestions please!
thank you

I agree with Barb! You've got more than enough time to train for the Oly. It's all about pacing yourself. I've seen your time for a Sprint. You can do this. If you sign up for it now, you have a goal to train for. There is purpose and you will respond! Remember the hard part is the training! ;-)

My team always talks about pacing. Most of our Tris on the Tampa Bay coast have 2 distances now, Sprint & Oly/International. We talk about pace all the time. I relax and swim a steady slow pace then hold a good pace on my bike as I know I will get my time back in the run. Regardless, the only time limits I've seen are in IM races and a few locals.

For a lot of us, we do them for healthy and fun. I focus on that. Go for it! You have experienced Triathletes here. I have 15 over the last 4.5 years. I've made all the mistakes!

I've got a duathlon coming up May 27th, here in town, but my one and only tri of the year, my A race, is a USAT sanctioned Olympic distance in September... my one goal for the year, be well trained for that one, and balanced.

Working on my swim and bike strength independently.

MAGLITE7 you could probably pull off finishing an Oly, but the balance between the sports would have to be managed... how much do you leave in the water, what do you leave on the bike course, and what's left for the run? But to just make the cut offs and finish? Bet you could do it, later this Summer.

I signed up for a sprint in June -- it'll be my first USAT official race (I've only done one other tri, a local race with a slightly shorter swim). I am still thinking about trying to work up to an Oly this summer, but I am waiting to see how this sprint goes and making sure I have enough time to train on the longer distances. I can do each part separately, but I can't quite imagine stringing them together at this point -- my legs are pretty beat after a 1500 m swim.

Monty, with spaces still open for Lincoln, and considering my 2018 travel budget... guess what? I registered for the Lincoln Half this morning! So I *will* be seeing you in May.

I'm still holding back on the rest... but hoping to get in to the BAA 5K the Saturday before the Boston Marathon, 'cause I'm going to be in Boston as a Spectator anyway! Registration starts next week.

I'm letting Space Coast go, too. Going to have to see how this budget shakes out before committing to too much. Better to spend it on good coaching than on travel, IMO.

Shall we PLAN on 2019 Flying Pig, Monty?

Oh, Dear... Monty you're coming back, but I might not be here... one of the races on my dream list is the Flying Pig HM in Cincinnati, same day as Lincoln! If I opt NOT to do that HM, I will probably be volunteering at Lincoln, and I'll see you there. So many races, so little time!

Brrrr! For those of us in the Frozen North (ok, I'm not as far North as SOME), it's the base training season, and time for dreaming and scheduling. Hey, team... what are you planning for 2018?

I'm thinking I want to be back up to Olympic distance fitness by September, for Lincoln's Last Blast tri. May not seem like an "A" race to some, but for me it is. I have several candidate races on a list that I'm dreaming about, leading up to that, but my philosophy this year is "minimal events / well prepared". In that light, I went to an advanced triathlon training seminar yesterday, and next Wednesday I'll be meeting with a triathlon coach. And a week from today there's a swim stroke analysis clinic up in Omaha.

Yes, I love base training, it's where dreams become goals with a plan! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I've done enough swim waves to see it all. Side stroke, back stroke, but no butterfly.

When I did my first Sprint, I started doing "Australian Crawl!" I decided to "get my breath" and broke into a racing breaststroke! I spent 9 years in Europe on a swim team! It felt so good, I finished the swim like that. My Tri Team Swim Coach saw me break into it and was blown away by my speed.
You can do whatever stroke you desire!

I'm not sure yet if I'll be confident enough for the Austin Half next October, but stranger things have happened! My deep desire is to complete the Kona Ironman.

I have a question for all you experienced triathletes. Is any swim style allowed? My front crawl is okay, but I can take at least 12 minutes off my half-distance swim time by doing breast stroke.

My "next" triathlon turned out to be yesterday. I had already registered way last October for the Age Group National Championship Olympic distance race... before the falls, concussion, etc. Before being forbidden to bike for six months. I figured I didn't have enough training time from the first bike ride to yesterday, but the pull was too strong.

I put together a ten day plan, executed it, and I will no doubt pay in the next few days for having done this (already paying with sunburn!), but I finished the race, and only six minutes slower than last year. I did better on the swim, thanks to working with my personal trainer. The bike clearly suffered, but I didn't make the same tactical errors on the same course as last year, I just wasn't well enough trained, and left a lot of leg on the bike, which hurt my run.

But I didn't miss "the whole tri season" which was my fear. And now, I have post-race insomnia, thanks to two caffeine laden gels taken during the course of the race!

Here in Tampa Bay, Our Largest Triathlon is St Anthony's in April. The day before St A's, we have the Meek & Mighty Tri:
Swim 100 yards Bike 3.6 miles Run 1/2 mile (Ages 7-10)
Swim 200 yards Bike 5.4 miles Run 1 mile (Ages 11 & Over)

I've volunteered as the Triton Elite Multisport Youth is a part of our Outspokin Tri Family. The Meek & Mighty introduces everyone to Triathlon! I've already seen our teammates, child and adult, start with this race only to become National Champions later! Yes, it totally acclimates you to the world of Triathlon! Welcome to Triathlon!

I'm running the 5Ks in Wisconsin. My cousin's wife is an accomplished triathlon competitor (though we've never met). I was messaging her with some basic questions. She recommended a local-ish ultra-mini for families in early June. My daughters (8 & 11) are SUPER excited to train with me for that one. Honestly, I could do that one today. 1/8 mile swim, 3 mile bike and 1/2 run. BUT, what a great accomplishment for the kids who aren't allowed to compete in the other local-ish tris. It will be fun to complete it with them and give me a good first exposure to the triathlon environment as there is a sprint-length tri the same day.

Getting healthy is like getting through boot camp. It's a lot of hard work, and some days you want to quit. But when graduation day arrives, memories of pain and trouble pale in the light of the pride and accomplishment you feel. You made it! You didn't quit.

Next triathlon, probably my "only" this year, is Sunday morning. I didn't know for sure I'd go for it until this week, seriously, and with only two bike rides under my belt since last Summer? This one is going to be for fun and to finish... it's a scant Sprint... 500 Meter swim, 20K bike, 5K run. But it's the sixth time I've done this particular race, as it's the lake I swam in as a kid, and only about a mile and a half from my house to transition.

Good job KIELISZA!!! One step at the time. With freestyle its all about learning how to breathe on your sides. Youtube has some great videos on how to do freestyle. 5ks are so much fun!!! Where are you doing it?

I'm looking WAAAAY ahead to my first triathlon - August 2018. I started training last week. Was able to walk a minute and jog 3 for 6 reps today. Can swim only 50 m freestyle, but 800 m backstroke without rest. Biking is scariest - 4.5 m took 45 minutes last week. My plan is to lose 30-40 pounds while training. Get my body accustomed to the three events, then do a 12 week triathlon training starting May 2018. In the meantime, I'm hoping to do a 5K this fall...and searching for a local partner to train with.

So excited that Monty is coming to race the Lincoln National Guard Half Marathon in May! I signed up for the full, and haven't felt so unsure about anything in YEARS, since the fall and concussion in November, but if you don't try for it, you'll never know!

Happy Training to all!

Thank you for the encouragement.
I improved my swim time but was 2 minutes slower overall but still just under 2 hrs (which was one of my goals).
My son did it too and was pleased by his overall time (he passed me at the end despite having started 40 minutes after me!)

Triathlon day is Sunday. 2 weeks ago I was sure I'd be OK, now I'm doubting myself!
My goals are very small
swim crawl for the full 400m (if I'm quicker than last year doing breaststroke that would be great)-this is an indoor swim
get to the end, ideally running all of the 5K
a bonus would be to come in under 2 hrs but I think that's quite unlikely (I managed 1 hr 57 last year in June)
It's looking cold but dry which is fine. My son is doing it with me so that's nice, he'll be much faster so hopefully he can meet me for the last bit of the run!

Maybe next year I'll do better!

At this point, with just 3 weeks left, do enough that your body remembers it knows how to swim, bike and run... best advice is to make sure your sleep and nutrition are on point. Then on race day... most important: HAVE FUN! I do my best when I don't pressure myself about time, but just listen to my body and accept what it has to give me on the day.

You'll win every time that way! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm signed up for October 2nd (400m, 24k, 5k) in Bedford, England. This will be my second tri (I did my first last year)
I'm pretty confident I'll finish-I did the bike ride and a 2 mile run this week.
I'm wondering how to use the next 3 weeks (apart from improving my swim, I'm teaching myself crawl, I swam breaststroke last year)
Any suggestions gratefully received

Thanks

I believe the key to any race/Tri is in the training! The race is simply a test of your training. The common goal is to finish, an intrinsic value. It's up to the individual to decide the speed, an extrinsic value.
Simply put, you determine your pace on the journey!

I was going to recommend the Athena Triathlete group on Facebook, but heck, you'd have to gain weight to be an Athena, Tessa.

I'm always in it to finish. I'm a slow swimmer (4:00/100 yards at my last race), I consider 16 mph on the bike to be smokin', and I'm pleased with a 13-minute mile on the run. I doubt I'll ever make it up on the podium until I graduate to the 70-79 age group; even then, my only hope is attrition.

I know my body could be faster. I recognize that I'm unwilling to make the sacrifices (time & effort) to get faster. And that's just fine.

Enjoy your training and sign up for a race.

Definitely sprint distance (400 indoor swim, 24K/15miles, 5k) but I'm super slow-being old(er), a bit overweight and I've never really been an athlete, just a plod along sort of person!

I'll keep working at it then (work allowing) and see where am at in a couple of weeks before I pay up my money!

thank you, I needed the encouragement to keep going

If your goal is just to finish, I'd say you have time to build up that continuous exercise time before October 2nd, so "go for it". For me a "under 2 hours" goal would be for a Sprint distance but I don't know your speeds, there are folks younger and fitter than I that complete the Olympic distance that fast.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

I'm thinking of signing up for a tri on Oct 2nd however I haven't done much training yet. My only aim is to get round it (I'd expect 2 hours) but so far I haven't got to 1 hour of continuous exercise. I'm wondering if it's really possible and how much I should try to increase my longer training session each week?

Monty, I didn't manage to find the Floridians. Kept running into the Texas crowd, and a few Coloradans and Iowans. Speaking of which, we swam over the state line, so we were swimming in both Iowa and Nebraska.

I got to meet two of my idols, Sister Madonna Buder started in the same swim wave as I, and I only finished about 25 minutes ahead of her, but good heavens, she's 86! She got a standing ovation when accepting her national championship trophy for the 85 - 89 Female age group. Funny, they didn't do the same for the man who took 80 - 84! There was no female 80 - 84.

Awesome day, HOT on that 10K, and we had Leanda Cave loping along encouraging on the run course, where most of us were dumping the water and ice over ourselves (at least those of us with later start times or slower times - like me).

Today... back to volunteer, as the Sprint race starts in about two hours. Happy Sunday all!

Good luck at Loveland, SCFDLT!

I'll be doing Cornhusker State Games Sprint triathlon on July 24, 2016, then Age Group National Olympic tri on August 13th, then Major League Triathlon as a sprint on August 27th... that should keep me off the streets for the rest of the Summer! I am deferring the decision about Last Blast Lincoln Triathlon (Oly) until later, it's on September 18th.

It was SO MUCH FUN! And I represented for Amy... that's her sign, and the medal I received for first in age group. It was sprinkling a bit at the start, and one of the other du-ers got a photo of transition with a rainbow over it... awesome shot.

Headed out for my very first duathlon this morning. I've done 5 sprint and 4 Olympic distance triathlons, but never a du! So... in memory and honor of all the service men and women who have lost their lives in service to their nation, and in particular for SSG Amy Krueger, of the 467th Med Det, I shall run-bike-run this morning! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'll definitely do that, Barb! I love that this Tri is on Madeira Beach! The swim is a quickie and the run is along the waters of the Gulf, literrally where the water hits the shore. The secret is to runn on packed even sand! The Gulf awaits!

Loving this week! I am working with Racehawk Management, putting on Madeira Beach Triathlon Weekend. We have a on Saturday morning 8:00am Kids Splash & Dash (run swim run) then an open .5 & 1 mile swim at 10:00am followed by Packet Pickup for the Sprint Tri on Sunday.

I'm comped to do the Sprint. It's a great swim in the Gulf (80 degrees water temp!), 13 mile bike on a fast flat course, then a 5K on the beach!

This is how we roll in Paradise!

At St Anthony's Triathlon this year, I did a practice run on the run course with a group of my Teammates. Then we took a couple of packed cars and drove the bike route as it had changed over the years. It was fun as we discussed strategy on the route! I highly recommend this ritual when doing Olys and up. I learned so much from others on this exercise!

Three weeks away from IRONMAN 70.3 Raleigh. Anyone else doing this one? I got to ride the course today - a lot more hills on the second half than what I expected.

Tessa,

Most Tri's will post a map of the course, including the bike leg. If it's an on-road course, get there a day early and drive the route (in your car) to familiarize yourself with it. This will help calm your jitters about cycling the route. You'll be fine!

Have fun!

I was planning to do a super sprint tri mid june, now I need to look after the grand children that day. The next local one is October :(
I'm mentally geared up to do one soonish so I'm looking at ones not too far away but cycling a route I don't know is a bit scary. Any tips?

If you doing a Super Sprint, and if you plan for more, do yourself a favor a buy an inexpensive Tri suit to swim, bike, & run.

Seeing questions on the shoes tells you need to do some homework.
Go to this site. I use it all the time.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com

Search on Transition. You should have a space to rack your bike and put your shoes, helmet, water, gels, etc there.

More to come as Im on the road to N'awlins to do the Crescent City Classic 10k. emoticon

I haven't got myself a tri suit yet. I've done a number of very short ones like yours and one super sprint.
It means I spend a bit longer in transition (I put on cycling shorts and a top over my swim suit) but since I'm not there to win, I'm just aiming to finish that's fine by me.

You leave your cycling/running gear by your bike in transition while you swim. Have everything laid out ready to put on as fast as possible!

I am doing my first tri in August, and I am nervous because I really don't know what to expect. Where do I keep my cycling and running shoes while I am swimming? This, and a ton of other questions are going through my head like do I spend the money on a triathlon suit for this mini triathlon that is 250 meters swimming, 6.6 miles cycling and 2.2 miles running, or do I just wear my swimsuit and deal with it? Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

I'll probably do a super sprint in June just a mile from where I live (so that's easy!) At the moment I'm getting for for a ski trip, I'm running and going to spin sessions occasionally. Once I'm home again in April I'll get training for the tri.

I have the State Games Sprint tri in July, and the Age Group National Oly in August. Trying to make sure I stay in shape for the others while I'm once again in the HM cycle of training for May (and will be again for November). It's a balance... and that balance is good!

(edited to correct spell check, which seems to think "Spring" is ok where "Sprint" belongs!) emoticon

I haven't signed up for it yet, but there is a sprint triathlon, The Black Hills Triathlon June 26. Right now I'm training for a half marathon - but at the end of this month will hop on a tri-schedule too. Love being able to combine sports for cross training!

I think I'll sign up for one in June. Haven't done one in over 6 years. Maybe I'll start slowly with a mini...

Saturday at the Rose Bowl! 5k run, 9 mile bike, 150 yard pool swim. The swim is the last event, so you dash through the finish barefoot & in your bathing suit. Yikes!

Hi Sheila!
I'm a bit banged up but I will pace myself deliberately to be under the pain threshold. I guarantee if I power walk my run, I know I'll feel better and finish!

I've said it before to many first timers..... HAVE FUN ... KEEP MOVING ... FINISH!
do YOUR TRI at YOUR pace and Feel proud when you cross the finish! I want to hear about it as I'm excited for you!

That is coming right up, Shelia! I used a 4 week training plan last summer as that is all the time I had after a running related injury, and I did just fine. I was looking to finish and to enjoy it and I did both.
My first tri this summer will be a sprint. The VTSun triathlon. June 18. I am eyeballing a 5 K and a couple of 10Ks to use for training/practice, as well as an open water mile swim in July to get ready for The Nation's Tri in Sept. My first Olympic distance.

Joy from VT!
