In August I got my beautiful cat from a French woman who had 47 cats. He was named Ruzik meaning red-headed (He's a long-haired orange cat). Well the French 'R' in Ruzik was hard for me to pronounce. So now he is just Zico and the love of my life. Zico is 11 years old.

My son named our Rocky, it was around the time the last Rocky movie came out ( that was a bad movie!)It was cute to call him Rocky because he was so teenie tiny, only 2 days old. Kiki adopted us almost 2 years ago, someone had named her Kitty, I thought she should have a different name and Kiki kinda sounded the same, (I didn't want to confuse her when calling her name) so I stuck with it. emoticon

Calibre, Attia, and Nixi.
Calibre was the name he came with, Attia is a Roman name, and Nixi was the Roman goddess of childbirth and protect of women in labor (which is ironic because she's spayed).

I used to keep cat food on my porch for this pretty long haired stray. The neighbors friends ended up taking her home. So I quit putting the food out after that kitty was gone but you know there were other cats getting nibbles on my porch too. One cat would jump up on a table in front of the dining room window and pound on the window with his paw if there wasn't any food. As soon as I'd open the front door to take the food out he'd run off the porch and immediately come to eat when I'd went back in the house. When we moved we couldn't leave him. He became known as Porch Kat. He's actually a balcony cat now but we still call him Porch Kat

My cat's name is Peaches. My son named him (It is actually his cat, but it acts like it owns me.) He has a sweetheart spot on the side of his body. My son named him after his best friend's cat.

My missing cat is named pumpkin - because he looks like the color of a pumpkin. At the time we found him, we had Peaches, and Puffy, and we really needed to add another "P" to the pod. Puffy has gone to kitty heaven. Pumpkin may be hiding out under our front porch. (That is what my husband suspects - because something has been eating the food we have left.)

I went for several years without a cat and decided when I moved to Lexington I was going to get a cat and name her Isabelle. I thought the name Isabelle sounded so regal...like a cat. Not long after I moved here I was on my way to the humane society and stopped by the pet store to get a litter box. A local shelter had some cats there and I saw a black and gray kitten climbing up her crate. She was 4 months old and kept meowing and had so much personality. She didn't look much like an Isabelle when I brought her home, but she grew into her name and I can't imagine her being named anything else.

My 14 year old cat is named Anaxamandia, Nax for short. We got her from my sister who said she had 2 female tabbies and one male. My boyfriend and I wanted a male cat, so I looked at two of the tabbies, they were girls, so I grabbed the other one. We named "him" Anaxamander form a Greek play my boyfriend had been in. When the cat was about 4 months old I noticed that is hadn't dropped it's testicles yet and then on closer examination I discovered that my sister had been wrong and all the kittens were female. We then changed her name to Anaxamandia.
Our other cat who is 2 we have had for less than a year. His official name is Colby, but we call him Fuzzy. He was a clinic cat at a vet's office. The vet decided to get rid of him and he came to my work through a couple of vet techs. My husband and I had both always wanted a flame point Himalayan, and here was one for free.
Unfortunately they really don't get along. Nax has never liked other animals of any kind and Fuzzy likes to antagonize her. We keep waiting to see when we are going to need stitches in one of them.

My first cat's name is "Asha" Which in hindi roughly translates to joy, it as my fiancees and I''s first pet ( test for children) and the name suits she has brought us so much joy to this day over the last few years.

My Second cats name is "Munyu" which is also a hindi word that roughly translates to courage ... it was not chosen to be a hindi word it was actually a typo when i was chatting about what i should name my kittie and it turns out my typo roughly translated to courage in hindi ... we took this cat from a friend who couldn't afford to feed it's mom or it for the last 2 weeks ( don't know why she didn't tell me sooner) but the poor thing was just weaning off the mom's milk early cause it's mom was drying up and eating garbage out of the can and off her dishes ... brave girl looked right up at me and started meowing when i took it out of the box ...

the third cats name (asha's son) is "Lacasandi" this is not hindi but instead is gibberish, literally... just gibberish sounds that sounded cool! and he is such a chill cat!

I lack creativity... Bella is named Bella because she was. As BellaCuddles said, it means beautiful in Italian. When I adopted her she was underweight, but still had a beautiful, long, hair. Since she's had good nutrition (and a cushy life) her hair has gotten so much thicker, and it's even more beautiful.

Stoli is supposedly a Russian Blue mix so we went with the first Russian name we could think of... Stolichnaya Vodka!

Finnegan is our Scottish Fold. We tried several Scottish names, but ended up with an Irish name instead. It just suited him. Of course he mostly goes by the nickname Chirpy, thanks to the strange noises he makes when he's excited.

Kyo is a big orange Maine Coon mix. He was named after a character in the Manga series "Fruits Basket" who turns into an orange cat when he is hugged by girls. My toddler calls him Kiki so that name seems to have stuck as well.

The boy is named Rune and the girl is called Sigil.

However...we have nicknames for them...

Tammie really named herself. I sat there for two days calling out different names and when she turned her head to one I kept it.

Cheddar got his name because his coloring is very similar to the cheese. With the way he meows though I think I should have named him "Ham" since he wants to be the center of attention.

We have two cats...Muffy(12) and Rocky(8).

Muffy's name is an interesting mix of two sources. I had recently watched a movie called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Muffy, as a kitten, killed most of my gerbils. So, she was named 'Muffy the Gerbil Slayer'. Luckily she's lost interest in our pet rodents.

My mom named Rocky. Rocky Balboa and Rocky the Flying Squirrel. As a kitten, he'd tear around the apartment so fast that you'd swear he'd be flying. He was also quite the hand wrestler. I think those are the reasons my mom explained for the name. While he no longer 'flies' around the apartment, he still seems to like boxing (especially with Muffy).

Our newest baby is Zorra. My DH was visiting someone in the country when he saw her. They said that there were two kittens that had been dumped. DH could only find one, and asked to bring it home.

At that time she was at the stage on cats where it is difficult so sex them. The facial markings look like a mask so we started calling "him" Zorro. About a week later, I told my husband that he was a she. He suggested changing her name, so we decided that to change her name from a masculine form to a feminine form ... and came up with Zorra.

She is a little unusual because she loves to ride in the car. When we go walking on the trails, if there aren't too many people around she walks on her leash. Whenever we get around water, she has to check it out. She will wade in until it gets to her belly, then that's too much.

She has become the dominant cat in the house, and has both of us wrapped around her "little tail."

Our MR Fluffy was named by our son because he is so fluffy and furry. Nothing sissy about this cat so he is MR Fluffy and it fits.

Our other cat Ace is totally black and was named by his Rescue Foster Family after the Ace of Spades card I am sure. It was appripriate and we just added on to it and call him ACE MAN cause he is such a manly cat.

My cat (Missy) who passed away in 2008 at the ripe old age of 22 yrs. was really named Miscellaneous because of all the different splotches of color she had. She was also called Miss Mis.

I named Pickles before we even knew she existed. I told my husband I wanted to get a kitten (Missy was in her teens). I was writing out a grocery list, wrote down "pickles" and said that would be a good name for a cat. So when we found a new kitten to bring home, Pickles was her name.

A few years ago we got Buddy from a shelter. His name there was Schnookums, but I didn't like that name. I thought he needed a tough name because he's missing the top half of his ears, so I picked the name Razor because he's black and steely grey. He didn't really respond to the name, but one day my husband called him and said "Razor, come here... Oh, buddy, come here." Right after DH said "buddy", Razor, now Buddy, came over. We looked at each other and said he picked his own name. He's been Buddy ever since.

We adopted our two furballs from a co-worker who was fostering them. My husband and I (we are complete nerds as well), play an online game called EVE and our characters are Wiley and Gray. My husband had originally agreed to adopting ONE cat, but when I saw these two I couldn't say no...so I used my most devious feminine tricks to get them home. Hence, Wiley and Gray now chase one another all over our house.

Actually, all it took was a visit to see these kitties and have Wiley be his buddy to win him over...bwahahaha!

Before them, I had Miss Kitty, Sugarfoot (because he had one white foot), Wooly Bully (because she was so furry), Soot (he was a solid black puffball), Wimpy (because as a baby he whimpered), Sunrise (half her nose was black, the other half was yellow), Teapot (she was the runt and tipped over when she walked), PJ (I don't know why, but we called him Peej as a nickname). I also have another cat who is coming to live with me after his "parents" retire that is a Hemingway cat named Ernie.

I'd have a million if my husband wouldn't divorce me...LOL!

We have two cats. The first one stole our hearts from the get-go. I had just lost my cat of over 8 years (Jake - he had stuck with me through the trauma I called high school, and that was an extremely painful loss), and I was so broken and my house felt so empty without Jake's strong personality (and meow) that my then boyfriend (now husband) brought me out to "just look" at cats available for adoption. When we started to interact with this little one, she climbed me and licked my face... then playfully launched herself at my husband and did the same. We fell in love instantly! And her commanding ways haven't changed - so she's Cleopatra (aka "kitten", aka "princess").

Our second cat we actually adopted to be Cleo's playmate. We adopted him a few months after Cleo, and we had very specific criteria: the new cat needed to like other cats; be playful; and like interacting with people. You'd think that would be relatively simple, but oddly enough we found lots of cats that only had 2 of three. Then, at the last place we were going to visit that day, the cat handler pulled this adorable orange tabby out of a cage and called him "Balthier" (or so we thought). Balthier as a name is significant to my husband and I because it is a Final Fantasy XII character (yes, we're complete nerds!), and, amazingly enough, Balthier was absolutely the *perfect* roommate for Cleo! Thus we adopted him, and the name stuck. (FYI - the handler had actually called him something like "Cauffield" or "Garfield", but both my hubbie and I heard the same, meaningful name! It was meant to be.)

When I adpoted my Baby after a failed wedding attempt I needed a cat with personality to drag me out of my depression. I got approved by the local animal shelter as an adoptive mom and they told me to just go down and pick a cat out. I was so overwhelmed. There were about 20 to choose from. I am giving all them scratches on their heads and this little runt of a cat comes sneaking out from behind a shelf and grabs this pompon toy on a spring and drags it off....thats when she grabbed my heart! I said that one!!

After another hour of paperwork and the passing of the money to the shelter i was taking my little terror home. They had given me a certificate to get her fixed and to see a vet. I was at a loss to what to name this new companion of mine. (at this point they told me she was a boy.) With the help of my mom we came up with Felix because she is a tuxedo cat. has the white paws and white belly. Seemed like a good name for a boy.

A week later the vet took me aside and said this cat had girl parts. So she became Foxy Roxy. She needed a name with bling! It's been the best name for her!! She's a cutie and still full of spunk 2 1/2 years later!!

My Ragdoll Maddie (who is pictured at left--age 10 weeks!) was named by a dear friend. My hubby and I had already arranged to meet with a breeder, and we knew we wanted a female. I spoke with my dear friend the day before we were to meet with the breeder, and she told me she'd had a dream that we got a new kitten and named her Madalynn! Of course, we had to keep the name--if it came to her in a dream, it was meant to be!

Cairo got his name cause he is an Egyptian Mau. My son, then around 12, kept giving me these names of Egyptian gods and goddesses but I couldn't spell any of them(lol) and some were hard to pronounce. Then we decded to call him Cairo and it fits him.

Hi, All!

My first kitten I ever got is Checkers. I named her Checkers because she is black and white (mostly black). She likes attention only when she wants it, but I do love her dearly as my first fur baby.

My second kitten is Blondie. She is mostly blond with some white, that is why I named her Blondie. She is very affectionate all the time. When I need some comfort, she is always there for me. I love her dearly.

Pets are definitely part of the family. I also have a dog named Lucky. That is the name she had when I got her as a stray from a neighbor. I also have fish.

Good luck to all with their pets.

God Bless,

Yvonne

Well, I have Snickers and Peshtigo.

Snickers I didn't name. She was a stray, found by two young girls just after Halloween. She looks like a squished Snickers bar. I kept the name because it fits her--not just her looks! She's very sweet, a bit nutty, and you can just see the snicker on her face as she gets into her latest mischief... ;)

Peshtigo is a registered Maine Coon. He's the boy in my avatar. Lots of people are surprised he's a Maine Coon, because he's a classic red tabby in color, instead of the more common/popular brown tabby--but he's a Maine Coon!

His name, I did pick. When I saw the pictures of him as a kitten, I thought, "my goodness, he looks like a little ball of fire! ... but he's going to grow up to be a BIG ball of fire..." So I wanted a fire-based name for him.

But... most firey names sound 'aggressive', and Maine Coons... aren't. In fact, they are very easy-going and personable kitties.

In my digging around, I found out about the Peshtigo Firestorm. This was the deadliest fire in United States history. It happened the same day as the Great Chicago Fire, but because Peshtigo was a frontier town and lost their one telegraph connection in the fire, no one heard about it until 2 days later, after survivors walked to the nearest town to ask for help.

What really struck me, though, in reading some posted stories/letters from survivors, was how the people reacted. There were stories of people who had lost everything, helping people who had lost everything. Or refusing aid from someone, because that person was already helping people in far worse condition than they were.

And, they rebuilt the town right where it was. It's still there today.

So, here was a great big fire, but filled with people being kind to one another and a community spirit that fits more with the Maine Coon personality.

And it shortens nicely to Pesh. Always a bonus. :)

I know! He is my sweetie, I just love him to bits

He is a lucky boy - I have seen way too many injured cats/kittens come in to the shelter where they tried to climb into a warm car engine. I am glad it was just the bumper!

So glad Bumper made it to your home before falling out. How scary! You were supposed to have him or her.

The only one of mine with an interesting name is Bumper who hitched a ride home from a fair curled up in the bumper of the truck and just fell out when we got home (after several stops on the way home wondering what that screaming noise was)

Yes Cassie is the one I asked prayers for. And she is doing much better. She's eating and also drinking her pedialyte like a good little trooper. She hates the antibiotics though ;)
Thank you again for your prayers.

I gave BOO! his name because he is a solid black cat who came to us 5 days before halloween! The name is so appropriate because at any given time, he will jump on our lap, back or stomach and startle us and I swear the expression on his face is "BOO!"

MARHAZ7, is that the same CASSIE we were all praying would get better last week? Sounds like she's doing just fine!

My most unusual cat name is Peep. He was given to me by a lady who found him in the parking lot where she works and couldn't keep him because her son has asthma and is allergic. I only agreed to take him in order to find him a home. He was 4 weeks old at the time, so I intended to keep him until he was 8 weeks. Meanwhile, he got sick and needed a trip to the vet (turned out to be a minor problem). Anyway, the vet needed a name for his record. All the way to the office, while he was in his carrier, he was making these little peeping noises, more like a baby bird than a kitten. So when they asked his name I blurted out "Peep!" and it stuck.

As for the new home? Well, it turns out that my older cat, who never liked kittens and was very aggressive toward them (he used to be an outdoor barn cat and was VERY territorial), took a real liking to that tiny black ball of fluff and so Peep found his new home with me. Ironically, he turned out to be HUGE, so his name is particularly comical. He does have an extremely unique personality, so having a unique name fits him.

My other indoor cat, Shelli, was also one that I had intended to foster until I could find her a home, but Peep and I fell so deeply in love with her that she got to stay. She is a tortoise shell cat--thus, Shelli.

My outdoor cats (in the picture) are Oscar and Felix, the two orange kitties who are litter-mates, and Magellan (the orange/white) and Stripes. Magellan and Stripes are litter-mates, but all four of them are from the same parents. A stray mamma had them in by barn. Felix and Oscer were in the first litter, along with a gray manx that died at 5 weeks and another orange that looked like them, who died when he was given anesthesia for neutering. Before I could get Mamma to the vet to be fixed, she was pregnant with the next litter and I just couldn't bear killing the babies, so Magellan, Stripes and Nala were born. Nala died of neurologic complications from a fly larva the week after I had her spayed.

Anyway, I had Mamma fixed, but she only stayed about a month and then decided to go elsewhere. So now I am down to 6 altogether--oh, and plus an old tom that comes around quite a bit (the father of the kittens) who I call Possum because he looks like one.

Hi Judith1654..... you say you have a "Bad" habit of rescuing strays? I'm not so sure I'd call that "bad!" Time consuming? Yes. Expensive? Probably. But "bad"? Nahhh... there's a special place in heaven for people like you who try to better the lives of animals.

my Cassie was named after the bird in Winnie the Pooh. Its the little blue bird that comes to stay with Rabbit in some of the episodes. We named her that because when she was a little baby she would chirp like a bird instead of meowing. She still does that at times 20 yrs later...especially if you sneak up on her and surprise her.

Well, I am a huge fan of all things Disney related and when I saw my baby, she looked a lot like Figaro from Pinocchio (still does), with the very classic black and white tuxedo markings, so she became my very own Disney kitty. And to be very corny, her full name is Disney's Magic Princess.

LOL Well, the only reason I have so many (I lost count at 400 during my lifetime) is because I have a BAD habit of rescuing strays. (Both dogs I now have were abandoned)

There are a BUNCH of ferals in the neighborhood that I've been trying to catch and have fixed. In the meantime, I take in the babies when they are old enough with promises of people saying they will take one...but somehow never do. Sooooo.....

My big problem is I refuse to take them to a pet store because I don't know WHO will buy them. (shudders)

Wow JUDITH1654 that's a bunch of kitties and names. I just have Morgan and she was already named by my daughter and her daughter when they got her from the humane society. They had two Kate and Ally but one died and they thought she was lonely. She hated Morgan and it was mutual. I think Gail was into King Arthur just then.

Well, I have the five stooges (they're all brothers) and pretty much look like their name.
Larry, Curly & Moe are mostly white with splotches of black. Moe has solid black across the entire top of his head, thus his "hair" looks like Moe's haircut. Larry has black on his head also BUT there is a section of white down the middle, thus it looks like Larry's bald section. And Curly is almost solid white with only a black tail and one ear black. And those three do EVERYTHING together!!
Joe was the runt (last one born) of the litter and since Joe was the last stooge to join the group, he got that name. So all that was left for my almost solid black with a white stripe down his nose was Shemp. Somehow, that seems to also fit.

My two tabbies, one male and one female, are siblings. Tigger, the male, squeaks and talks a lot like Tigger. His poor sister, which we weren't supposed to keep, so didn't come up with a name EXCEPT Sister, is now stuck with that name.

Another pair of siblings, one male and one female, are exact opposites. The female is white with black and the male is black with white, thus they are Yin and Yang. And I think Yang is pregnant!

Ewok is solid black with a fuzzy silver tail and you can BARELY see her eyes. But my son calls her Fuzzy. Pumpkin is a stray kitten with a very round face I found in my driveway a couple of weeks before Halloween. My son named her.

Tortie is another one that wasn't supposed to stay so she ended up stuck with that name. As did my one solid orange kitty - Garfield...except he's a real love bug.

Isis and Sweet Pea are two solid black sisters that act like their names - one's a lover and the other acts like a goddess!

Cleopatra & Socrates are siblings and are almost 16 years old. Their brothers Chopin, Simba (who really did look like the lion king) and Mozart have all passed away.

And then there's Junior, also known as Mini-Me, because he looks and acts JUST like Yin. You never see one without the other.

Those are the indoor cats. The ferals outside are another story. Squeaky because she squeaks instead of meows. Jade because she's gray with emerald green eyes. There are two solid black females that I sometimes call Inky and Momma cat for lack of anything better. One of the black females butts heads with Jade and they walk around, side-by-side, like each other's shadows. We lovingly call them Thing One and Thing Two!

Then there's Tortie Mama, Buddy (a classic tabby that is stray, not feral), Sam, just because he looked like a Sam to me; Buster and Keaton - two feral male tabbies, and one black Tom that I just call Tom. (shrug) Shemp mama is because she looks like the stooges - Shemp, specifically.

Feeding time is interesting, to say the least.

PJ came with the name and since he already answered to it, I didn't change it. I figured the poor little guy had been through enough already and found it less traumatic to just keep it.

Mr. K was originally Rajah. I expected him to be very regal, but my BF at the time could never remember his name. He started calling him Mr. Kitty and as much as I hated it, the name stuck.

Gordy was so named after a client of mine that was one of my favs, but now the name really fits him as GORDO is fat in spanish and gordy was fat and is now on a diet.
Beetlejuice is named such because he is orange and I wanted to name him orangejuice, but my hubby thought that didn't work, and so because michael keaton is one of his favorite actors, we both kind of blurted out BEETLEJUICE!!!! and the name fits him, as he is very mischievous.
Mortisha, is named after the addams family Morticia. She has long black fur and is part himalayan. She is extREMELY prissy. We kind of wanted to keep a movie gothy type theme with our names. except for gordy who was named a long time ago.

Please be mindful of the fact I have asperger's. I do NOT communicate the same as everyone else, if you have a question or a concern with how I worded something, please ask.

Did you mean Cleopatra? Just wanted to make sure I got you kitty's name right with the description of her!

Cleocatra was because she was this little regal baby when I got her, her name was bigger than she was, but from 5 weeks till today she still rules the house and us. There couldn't be any other name for her. And her fur was such a shiny black.

Hmm... if your cat knows you're writing about her, maybe she's not as dumb as you think!

Mine is Scout, named after the little girl in To Kill a Mockingbird. Why, I don't know, since that Scout was a girl and my Scout is a boy. But he came to me with that name, and it works. I also had a Rocky, named after the Beatles Rocky Raccoon, because he had a raccoon like mask, and Fluffy, because she was very fluffy, and a Smokey, who was gray. Not too original there! LOL

Wolfie is short for Wolfgang. He is a breed called a Nebelung, which means "creature of the mist" in German, so we wanted to give him a German name. Plus, he looks almost wolf-like with his coloring and long fur!

Coco got her name because she is refined and elegant, like Coco Chanel!

I notice that people give their cats interesting names and I often wonder what the story is behind them. So share if you like!

My cat Roxy got her name because she is dumb as a box of rocks. When we brought her home she chased a toy under the sofa and when ahe tried to get out she bumped her head on the lip of the couch. So she backed up like "oops can't get out that way", moved over a few inches bumped her head again and kept doing this over and over and over, she couldn't figure out she had to duck about 1 inch to get out.

She knows I am writing about her right now and is giving me the stink eye. emoticon
