Montana-I moved here because it is a beautiful state . Had a discussion with my contractor about veterans, the flag and all things patriotic. Montana (at least my small part) is a place where we recognize our veterans, say the pledge, respect the flag and this happens daily. The annual Veterans dinner last night is just one example. School choir (6) sag the National Anthem with harmony. Absolutely beautiful 5th graders made poppy flower posters. High school students helped set up and take down. I am proud to be a veteran and a Montanan.

I can do it with your help!

Got the gate fixed in the snow and just beginning to get dark. My fingers are froze and I peed my pants just before I got to the back door. But it's done and now I can get on to the other chores!

Today I am going to set up a table at this veteran's event with over 200 Christmas cards to be signed with messages for our deployed soldiers! I cleaned out 4 boxes of Christmas stuff and pulled out cards when I saw a similar thing happening at a brew pub in Helena! I contacted the Montana Supports Soldiers group for details and they told me what they wanted. They have to be in Helena by November 10th so they can be included in Christmas packages being shipped to our military men and women!

So it was truly a win-win situation for me. I got rid of a lot of cards I would never get sent and as a veteran who was far from home over the holidays I know how much it will mean to them!

I also set aside another batch to donate to the senior center so they can sell them!

Used the leaf blower and lawn mower to clean up a lot of leaves in the back yard! Cleaned out the big day Lily bed. Gross slimy leaves that froze before they died back. Got the irises cut back. Hauled 2 wagon loads and 3 55 gallon cans of yard waste out!

We're having ongoing problems with our TV/Internet/Phone bundle - and the lamest excuses you've ever heard from them! I am so tired of Spectrum/Charter/Bresnan or whatever name they are going by these daze!

Got a huge mountain off the patio cover. Then have to shovel it off the patio so I can get out. Went to the grocery for some soup veggies and the fat Sunday paper and the clerk said her patio cover collapsed. I'm glad I was able to keep mine mostly cleared off. Lots of branches and bigger limbs on the streets in town. At least it's not cold!! And we still have power!

*Oh, and the Sunday Great Falls Tribune wasn't there because the delivery driver couldn't get out of Great Falls this morning!

It really IS a 'small town' (which was this year's theme). The couple driving this jalopy are friends of my mom's and all the kids are their grandkids! I'm so excited they won the best non-commercial float. It really was creative!

The Festival Days parade was wonderful. Small town parades are usually so much fun. The drum and pipe guys from Alberta Canada always come down and they are so much fun in their kilts with their bagpipes. The high school band was better than usual. They performed somewhere (like the Rose Bowl??) last year and got spiffy new uniforms and did a much better job of marching than they have in past years. A great old car with the radiator cap open so the steam was coming out - all kinds of junk and kids in the back and the banner "Beverly Hills or Bust" - a Beverly Hillbilly knock off and it was great. And of course all the fire trucks and combines and military equipment and horses and unicycles and dance troops. And best part was one of my mom's old friends was in town and she met us so my mom got to see her. Nice walk down there and back and the weather cooperated. A great Saturday morning activity!

Had the upper left abscessed tooth pulled this afternoon. Amazing that even after the IV antibiotics and the course of antibiotics I had after the last extraction in July that there was still infection in this one? emoticon Will sleep sitting up on the couch at mother's tonight. Not feeling too chipper right now.

So thrilled to be finished with harvest cooking!! The clean up will take me a couple of days but I'm just so glad to be done! This is the longest break between winter wheat and spring wheat in the 16 years I've been cooking for this crew!

I had to make mac and cheese (it was on the menu) at the senior center so I did have a couple taste test bites but did not eat any so hopefully it wasn't enough carbs to knock me out of ketosis.

I have about an hour before I start dinner for the crew and I think I'm going to sit down in the recliner and put my feet up. My knees and ankles are really swollen. I really want this to be the last night...but we shall see. There is a lot to be done at the senior center. A ton of produce was donated and I should go deal with it - but "it's not my circus, not my monkeys" so I'm not going to get involved. I hate that she wastes so much food but I always swoop in and make the pickled beets and clean and cut the rhubarb and get it in the freezer and shell the peas and stuff and I'm just not going to step up to the plate this time. I want to get my own house in order so when it comes time to leave for vacation I am not depressed over things I didn't get done.

Will finish the winter wheat harvest tomorrow afternoon so I don't have to fix dinner and not start on the spring wheat until at least next Monday. Can sure use the break. The heat has been miserable for me this year!

The benefits of healthy choices far outweighs the number on the scale. Let's continue to reduce our risk of disease, build strong muscle and bone, stay flexible and mobile, improve our cardiovascular system, help our body heal itself, increase our energy level, relieve stress, slow the aging process (and who doesn't want that ?!?)... and so much more.
Don't give the scale any power. Take note of the number then get off the scale and live your life.

Supposed to get to 96 today. The couple from New Zealand are coming in on Amtrak to help with harvest. Nick says we'll try cutting on Friday but probably won't really be ready until Monday!!

Montana Facts and Trivia

Montana has the largest migratory elk herd in the nation.

The state boasts the largest breeding population of trumpeter swans in the lower United States.

At the Rocky Mountain Front Eagle Migration Area west of Great Falls more golden eagles have been seen in a single day than anywhere else in the country.

North of Missoula is the largest population of nesting common loons in the western United States.

The average square mile of land contains 1.4 elk, 1.4 pronghorn antelope, and 3.3 deer.

The Freezeout Lake Wildlife Management Area contains as many as 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans during migration.

At Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge it is possible to see up to 1,700 nesting pelicans.

The Montana Yogo Sapphire is the only North American gem to be included in the Crown Jewels of England.

In 1888 Helena had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the world.

46 out of Montana's 56 counties are considered "frontier counties" with an average population of 6 or fewer people per square mile.

At Egg Mountain near Choteau dinosaur eggs have been discovered supporting the theory some dinosaurs were more like mammals and birds than like reptiles.

Montana is the only state with a triple divide allowing water to flow into the Pacific, Atlantic, and Hudson Bay. This phenomenon occurs at Triple Divide Peak in Glacier National Park.

The notorious outlaw, Henry Plummer, built the first jail constructed in the state.

No state has as many different species of mammals as Montana.

The moose, now numbering over 8,000 in Montana, was thought to be extinct in the Rockies south of Canada in the 1900s.

Flathead Lake in northwest Montana contains over 200 square miles of water and 185 miles of shoreline. It is considered the largest natural freshwater lake in the west.

Miles City is known as the Cowboy Capitol.

Yellowstone National Park in southern Montana and northern Wyoming was the first national park in the nation.

The town of Ekalaka was named for the daughter of the famous Sioux chief, Sitting Bull.

Fife is named after the type of wheat grown in the area or, as some locals contend, by Tommy Simpson for his home in Scotland.

Fishtail is named for either a Mr. Fishtail who lived in the area or as the area Indians prefer for some of the peaks in the nearby Beartooth Mountain Range which look like the tail of a fish.

The Yaak community is the most northwestern settlement in the state.

Montana has the largest grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states.

Near the Pines Recreation Area as many as 100 sage grouse perform their extraordinary spring mating rituals.

The first luge run in North America was built at Lolo Hot Springs on Lolo Pass in 1965.

Combination, Comet, Keystone, Black Pine, and Pony are names of Montana ghost towns.

Virginia City was founded in 1863 and is considered to be the most complete original town of its kind in the United States.

Montana is nicknamed the Treasure State.

The bitterroot is the official state flower.

The density of the state is six people per square mile.

The highest point in the state is Granite Peak at 12,799 feet.

The most visited place in Montana is Glacier National Park, known as the crown jewel of the continent. It lies along Montana's northern border and adjoins Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, forming the world's first International Peace Park.

Buffalo in the wild can still be viewed at the National Bison Range in Moiese, south of Flathead Lake and west of the Mission Mountains.

Montana's first territorial capital, Bannack, has been preserved as a ghost town state park along once gold-laden Grasshopper Creek.

The Old West comes to life through the brush and sculpture of famed western artist Charlie Russell at the Charles M. Russell Museum Complex in Great Falls. The museum contains the world's largest collection of Russell's work, his original log-cabin studio and his Great Falls home.

The Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman gained fame through the work of its chief paleontologist, Jack Horner. Horner was the prototype for the character Dr. Alan Grant in the best selling novel/movie, "Jurassic Park."

Montana's rivers and streams provide water for three oceans and three of the North American continent's major river basins.

Just south of Billings, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his troops made their last stand. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features the Plains Indians and United States military involved in the historic battle.

The western meadowlark is the official state bird.

The first inhabitants of Montana were the Plains Indians.

Montana is home to seven Indian reservations.

Every spring nearly 10,000 white pelicans with a wingspan of nine feet migrate from the Gulf of Mexico to Medicine Lake in northeastern Montana.

The Going to the Sun Road in Glacier Park is considered one of the most scenic drives in America.

The state's official animal is the grizzly bear.

The state's motto Oro y Plata means gold and silver.

Montana's name comes from the Spanish word mountain.

In Montana the elk, deer and antelope populations outnumber the humans.

Glacier National Park has 250 lakes within its boundaries.

Hill County has the largest county park in the United States. Beaver Creek Park measures 10 miles long and 1 mile wide.

Competing with the D River in Lincoln City, Oregon for the title of the world's shortest river, the Roe River flows near Great Falls. Both rivers lengths vary from 58 feet to 200 feet. The source for this small river is Giant Springs, the largest freshwater spring in the United States.

Drove to Rudyard to the newly relocated "Sugar Shack" diner Sunday afternoon. It has 9 stools! Cute little place. Big black clouds to the north and to the south and as we were getting our burgers the wind came blasting through. We ran out to the picnic tables and grabbed the napkin dispensers and salt and pepper shakers before they blew away! Not too much rain. Drove through the farm land on county roads back to Havre. Harvest will soon be upon us! Havre got .4 inches of rain (according to my rain gauge) while we were out driving around.

The black clouds hung around for awhile but no more rain for us. Saw the hail and storm damage in northwest Great Falls on the news. Some still without power. Hope all of you are safe and staying aware of the weird weather watches and warnings.

Lots of thunder rumbling and occasional lightening but still no rain. Temperature has dropped from the 80's to the 60's so think (hope) we won't get hail! Dogs are finally sleeping near a noisy fan! Between fireworks and thunderstorms it hasn't been a good week for them!
