that's really interesting about cucumbers. I wish I liked them but I can't stand the taste or the smell of them.

I don't think you are whining. Looking for a job, interviewing and then receiving rejection is pretty darn tough. We are here to support you, so feel free to let it all out.

The Amazing Cucumber

This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finished a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

David -- The thing about emotional eating is that it works - for the moment. It does distract us from the pain or anger or whatever uncomfortable feeling we are experiencing right then. If we don't do the eating, then we feel the feeling, sometimes pretty intensely. Part of the journey is learning that that's a good thing. No bad feelings means no good feelings either. And no feelings means no life.

You put yourself out there. You took a risk. It didn't work out (and they weren't even nice about it!), and right now it doesn't feel very good. You're doing the right thing, you're feeling your feelings, and you're expressing them in a safe way.

Feelings are just feelings. They have no power (other than what we give them) and they don't last. You are not your feelings. Tomorrow is a new day. The feelings will be gone (or less intense) and you will still be here.

Keep doin' what you do, Precious Person!

David, I don't think you are whining. Of course you are disappointed, frustrated and even annoyed. You keep putting yourself out there hoping for the best yet knowing rejective is possible. No one feels good about rejection. So your reaction is perfectly normal. Just don't beat yourself up or give up. We're here for you. That's what friends are for!

Hi all,

I'm here again. I've been lax and trying to do this on my own, but ended up just holding even. But, the next few months look good in terms of able to consistently exercise and follow my diet!

I have to admit. I just let everything go when the heat decscended at the beginning of the month. The lawn - nada. Weeding - nada. Cleaning house - nada. Cleaning garage or car - nada. All I did was sit on my butt and read and whine about hot it was. And I wasn't nearly as hot as Dawn as I have air conditioning that works.
I have a couple extra swimsuits - I've only worn once or twice that I can send you Dawn if you just message me your address. Glad to see you adding the strength-exercises to your routine. I think you'll find the weight is again falling off at this change in your routine.
Lee Gwen, Hope it is just a bit cooler up there. I've been thinking about the time I spent two years ago in Winona MN. Walking around the lakes. I want to do that again so bad. I'm thinking about going up labor day weekend just so I can have three days of walking/running with no crossing streets, cool breezes for five miles at a time. It's calling to me...

Dawn chlorine is hard on swimsuits, BUT there is toooooo much chlorine in that pool!!!! Find the person responsible for treating the pool. They should have a test kit for the chlorine level and a couple other tests. The test kit has the shades of color (usually yellow)for the concentration of chlorine, so they can see it the pool needs more or none. GO GET EM!!!

Evening all, hope everyone had a safe, cool, and peaceful weekend. It's been Hot here too! One thing we do for the children, is fill rubber gloves with water, tie them off, and put them in the freezer, They feel wonderful cooling off necks, heads, etc. Dawn~ Something you might try, is rinse your suits in baby shampoo. Its gentle, and won't harm the elastic. Best wishes tonight, It's so exciting having a new baby in the house!. My daughter called last night, her step-mother passed yesterday, due to a brain tumor. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Greetings Team Family:

Admittedly I am so hot & miserable that I can NOT remember EVER being this uncomfortable. One of the problems with the high heat is that I swell really badly and my joints, especially my legs are really bothering me. I would be afraid to get on the scale today... bet I'm holding a ton of water weight. SIGH.

Last night my house was so hot that I couldn't sleep. I had to get up and take 2 COLD baths. I've been following some of your wonderful advice and keeping wet towels handy (and in the freezer) and putting them on myself. The worst of it is that yesterday, I ran out of sunscreen at the pool and while I made sure that everyone else was covered, I skipped myself thinking that since I am at the pool daily it would be okay. NOPE. My face got sunburned (the rest of me was okay thank goodness) and it is making me feel even hotter!

It's hard to believe that I am running out of bathing suits again. Do you all have problems with your bathing suits disentigrating? I've had to throw away two suits this week. I have two that are about to bite the big one. What happens is that the elastic just breaks apart and then they get both see-through and too lose. I have one awesome suit that is chlorine resistent that people told me would last forever....I LOVE IT.... but sadly, while the outside is still hanging tough, the inside is breaking apart. Granted, I am at the pool DAILY and for 3-4 hours per day but this is CRAZY! I was so blessed that folks were willing to share bathing suits that they had shrunk out of (or they just felt sorry for me being too darn poor to buy any for myself) and sharing hand-me-downs. PLEASE, if you've had a better summer than I have losing weight (still plateauing at 296) and have a size 24 (or even 22 or 26 or 3X) and can Share your hand-me-down bathing suits.. I'd be forever grateful. MORE IMPORTANT.... do you have ANY suggestions on what I can do to SAVE THESE SUITS??? I rinse them out well. I do NOT use a dryer on them, I hang them out to dry... I do NOT leave them in direct sunlight.... and still they are falling apart. HELP?!?!?!

Well, I promised the grandkids we'd head to the pool before 3pm and I am needing to get dressed and ready. I hope that you're having a great day. Bright blessings to you all. STAY COOL! Love you, Dawn

PS: I am surprised to see myself posting this but I AM SO HAPPY THAT I AM SLEEPING IN THE VAN TONIGHT! I know that it's a pain to sleep in the van (necessary since we can't afford the gas to drive back and forth) BUT, it is MUCH COOLER in the van than it was last night in my non-ac house. I'm looking forward to a good night of sleep & BREEZE!

Good morning Leegwyn Thank you for the input. I am starting today. My husband actually eats often during the day and what he eats is pretty predictable. Although dinner calories obviously vary, I figured (since my email yesterday) that he eats about 1600 calories, give or take, in a day. I would gain on that many calories.
I have made my food plan for day 1, beginning this experiment. I have made a couple substitutions, but in the same food family and smaller portions to keep the calorie numbers right for me.
I am curious to see how this goes.

emoticon emoticon

He has also done some exercise literally every day of his life. So I'll make sure I do that too.

My husband is thin and I am fat.

I wonder what would happen it I were to eat what he eats??

I think I am going to give that a try.

Hi again wonderful team! I have missed you all! I've been very busy, and finally life is starting to slow down. Katlyn graduated, and is planning to go to College this Fall, so we've been attending orientation, placement, and financing classes till I'm almost blue in the face. She is excited, and I'm happy for her. Amber, and Eric (her intended), moved this month to their first apt. The entire move day was something to laughter laugh about, (it started off with him catching the UHaul into the street, (yes, I did say stuck into) he backed out of his driveway, and the trailer,, became stuck in the asphalt. The police had to tow him out) But they are now busy unpacking, and making wedding plans. We (the girls and I) will be heading to NC this Friday, to visit Krista, and Nina (grandbaby). Krist's husband left for Afghanstan last weekend, so we're going down to spend some time with her. My husband had heart surgery, received two stents. Mom is doing much better since her surgery, and I am still traveling between two jobs, and trying to keep the day to day home operations in sinc. I sure have missed you all! Take care, sorry this is so long.

Greetings Team Family: I'm so sorry that I have not been posting this week. There has been so much going on in my life. I have taught at least two classes per day every day this week except today. One of the other water aerobic teacher had her mom in the hospital for brain surgery & I had to take on two of her classes and the other one was out of town for a seminar so I had to take on two of her classes. What it boiled down to was instead of teaching 7 hours per week for the past two weeks I've done 10 last week and 9 this week and that is with some of my evening classes being cancelled due to thunderstorms. It makes Dawn one tired puppy to be running to the pool every morning as soon as I get Paul dropped off from work. I have just enough time to run in, change out of my sweaty clothes (from sleeping in the van at night) and into a bathing suit & coverup. This week my friend & workout buddy, Dr. Chuck, pushed me into working out in the Nautilus room doing the strength machine circuit. Mirrors and ALL! I have committed to meeting him to do them on Mon/Wed/Fri at 11am. That gives me time to teach my 9am classes AND get in some laps swimming too. Tuesdays and Thursdays I have 3 water aerobic classes in the morning so there is no way to add in any extra exercise time because I have to start babysitting the grandchildren at noon. I've had a blast this week with my grand-daughter. Her sisters come home in two weeks so we've been trying to do extra fun grandmama/Savannah stuff. My evening water aerobic classes are still going great. They are Mon-Thu 6:45-7:45 and we're having a blast. My CD player (or I should say my son's) broke so we SING and cut up and have a great workout and FUN TIME. We've even added the Hokey Pokey... a very good workout in the deep water! I get home in the evenings in time to grab a quick bite to eat and then drive Paul to work. It's been SO hot this past couple of weeks. I am so grateful for the little portable battery operated fan that we got. It fits right on the dash of the van. I have been reading a lot and am really enjoying that before I drop off to sleep (usually around 11pm). Paul gets off at 7am and the cycle begins again. Tuesday night, when he was off from WalMart, we did spend a family night watching America's Got Talent. We all enjoy that. It's just HOT HOT HOT in the living room with no AC and the whole family in there. I never thought I'd say I prefer to sleep in the van to my bed... but our room is so hot, I am sitting here dripping with sweat while I type this and that is WITH a huge fan blowing on me. YUCK. No big plans for this weekend. I am taking a water aerobic class in the morning, then meeting two friends to "workout" in the pool from 10am-noon. Later in the day I promised to take Savannah to the pool, Maybe Paul will join us. Then it's a relaxing night at home since Paul is off from WalMart on Saturdays. Sunday I guess that I'll be at the outdoor pool in the afternoon. Who knows what else I'll do before taking Paul to work that night. Sorry again that I've been lax in writing to you folks. I hope that everyone is doing GREAT! Oh... my bummer news for the day is I did NOT lose any weight this week and TWO of my bathing suits bit the dust this week. I am telling you, chlorine wreaks havoc on my suits and being in the water all the time means I am going to be without again soon. SIGH. Hopefully there will be some bathing suit sales coming up now that it's the end of the swim season. Bright blessings to you all, Love, Dawn

Bobbi: Happy belated birthday to you and I'm glad that pesky pound went away. Your garden party sounds lovely. I hope you have a wonderful time.

Jeff: AMEN as long as the number is lower from week to week I don't concern myself with the numbers in between.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Bickley, I like your feeling about the scales.
Bobbieed, have a great weekend.

Belated Happy Birthday, Bobbie! I understand the frustration of gaining a bit, even though I didn't go over my calories. But I don't worry too much over the scales during the week. The numbers keep slipping down, so that's what's important. It fluctuates during the week, but as long as Sunday morning's number is lower than last Sunday morning's number, that's all that counts.

Grace and peace,

Jeff

It has been a whirlwind week here. My birthday was Wednesday and I was remembered by friends and family. I finally lost the pound that creeped back on this week. Although I am not sure how as I never went over my calories. Maybe it was muscle weight from the increased exercise. But whatever the reason it is gone again now. I am going out to dinner tonight but I have planned for it and will not go over my calories for the day. Tomorrow we are having a 'Garden Party' for the Grand daughters. I have made lovely hats and loads of healthy treats along with the necessary little cakes for the girls. It should be fun.
I hope everyone has a great weekend.
Bobbie

I am going out of town to a wedding Saturday, Sunday DH & I are going to Arkansas trout fishing. We are stopping to a from in Shreveport for a little gambling, so we "don't have to drive so far in one day." LOL. Will be MIA for a week.

Luv, pami

Hi everyone

Roberta welcome to the team. I hope you have great success here.

Kateryn I'm so glad you have a stove and can cook the things you need to stick with the plan. That must have been rough.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Okay, no weight loss this past month. But, it was expected as I didn't have my stove and I was eating out most of my meals.

On the other hand - I lost two more inches. I am officially down one dress size from when I started. (actually - probably two dress sizes because I was pretty squeezed into the last one.) My A1c went down another .2 from 7.4 to 7.2. My blood pressure was excellent 124 over 70. No other blood work was done at this time.

I'm a happy camper! Now that I have my stove back I am going to start measuring/weighing and pre-planning my meals again.

The hot and humid should break pretty soon and I can get back to my 5k training. I had to drop it when the humidity went over 80%. Sweating that much - while probablly good for me - also meant that my internal temp was spiking too high - not so good for me on hot days. And carrying water with me while I was running - Lets just say - really really awkward! And heavy!

Just got back from a day full of workshops. I'm tired...feel like I actually worked all day. But I learned a lot. I'll still get my exercise in after a bit. I'll be glad when it cools down enough to walk a little outside. Say, maybe around October...Hahahaha!

It's a lovely evening. Warm breeze, moon getting bigger.
Am pretty much on track here with SP, but need to do better, have done better. Will start tomorrow's meal plan before I sign off for the day. And make a mental plan for exercise tomorrow.

I'm having a great "staycation," just hanging out at home and doing whatever I want. Today I had a great call helping my brother navigate SparkPeople, read a zillion SP blogs, and had a good workout with Dawn the Tormentor (not to be confused with our beloved DAWNWATERWOMAN).

I have to start doing a little work - have to preach on Sunday and the sermon won't write itself - but it's been nice and relaxing.

Still staying on track so far. This week has been a little more of a struggle because I've been busier, going to the Texas Workforce Commission, attending workshops. I have three tomorrow, between 11am and 4pm. It's almost like working. Heh.
