I fell prey this morning to the CNN, coffee, laptop trap and haven't exercised yet. My husband took the day off, so before that we sat on the back porch talking about his work. I will however be in the weight room, and on the treadmill by 1pm.
We recently got our bicycles out of storage thinking we would take this up again. Contemplating getting rid of these 12 speeds and getting something different as these both need work anyway. Does anybody have any suggestions for what kind of bikes to get for just casual rural riding on the black top? Hope you all have a fabulous day! emoticon

Good morning all!

Hot and humid is right. I didn't finish up my walk until around 10:30...I was walking back and forth on the streets, always looking for the shady side!

I got a good workout in this morning after a restaurant dinner last night, in which I ate my dinner, then had a piece and a half of the awesome pizza my husband and son were sharing. Gosh, I was full after my fish, and then I go reaching for more. We are such slaves to our desires, aren't we? I know I am at times. Add a 16 oz. bock beer to all that, too. Yes, I had BOTH sour cream and butter on my baked potato...

Anyway, I rode 17 1/2 miles this morning and then walked another 25 minutes to stretch my legs after that. That'll teach me.

Very hot, humid weather here this week, and I'm retaining water - as is so often true. My face, fingers, ankles and feet are all visibly puffy, and my weight is up 2 pounds.

Well, whatever I'm doing I just have to step it up, that is beginning tomorrow. I weighed in today to find over the last 2 weeks I did not lose any weight. The good news is that I went down 1 inch on my waist, all other measurements stayed the same. Of course, it could be that I held the tape a bit tighter today. Oh, well, today I will probably fall victim to a bad additude and tomorrow I will add more veggies and salads. emoticon

Interesting, I just started having Healthy Choice steamers and have been mixing in frozen brocolli. It really does make it easier getting in the extra veggies.

I never thought about mixing frozen veggies with a frozen dinner to extend it---great idea! This thread has been so enlighening!

I have a Bowflex and really like it. We got it on sale at Sports Authority about 5 years ago, bottom of the line, but it does what we need it to do!

I'm so glad you tested! That's the first step! I've been swimming 30 minutes for my cardio 6 days a week, so I know that has helped with my arms being stronger. But on those crunches. GEEZ! I didn't do well at all. I couldn't figure out how they were expecting me to do them. So it was really more of a sit up than crunches. But you're suppose to keep you hands on the floor. Couldn't do that. :( I could only do 8 in the minute. So I'm really excited to see any improvement this week!!

Keep me posted on how you do!

I have been eating Schwan's frozen fruit bars for a treat - either strawberry or blueberry. They are very yummy and only 40-50 calories each. I will also have just a regular old fudgesicle sometimes if I want something chocolate and creamy. I think they are only 100 calories too.
I take my lunch to work almost every day (and sadly tomorrow is my frist day back - school starts waaay too early here emoticon ) I take a Lean Cuisine (glazed chicken and chicken ala'orange are my favs) and mix in 1-2 cups of frozen veggies (usually Safeway mixed veggies for stirfry with asparagus). It fills me up more, the sauce on the chicken flavors the veggies and I get my veggie count in easier. It's quick and easy to grab on the way out the door.
I'll have to try the test - I FINALLY worked my way up to a whole 10 (modified) pushups. emoticon
I can really tell a difference though in my other strength exercises. Makes me want a BowFlex or something rather than just dumb bells emoticon

Irene, what about 1/2% milk with lowfat or ff Nestle's Quik? I think they have it. Oh, why did you talk about this, lol? I wish I had some....! And I'll bet we're all learning along with everyone...you're not alone!

One thing I did today that I almost never do: I used a gift card from Starbucks that a student gave me at the end of the year! I got a tall ff Mocha Frappachino( probably didn't spell it right!) for 110 calories--every bit as satisfying as a lowcal icecream treat----and FREE!

Brenda, I did the test this morning but I did full sit-ups instead of crunches. I didn't look up the test since I thought I knew what I was supposed to do. I did 20 sit-ups in a minute, from a full laid back position. I'll try the true crunch test day after tomorrow.

It appears you all are very knowledgeable about food here, and I have a question I hope someone can answer. I love chocolate milk, but it is sooooo high in calories and fat. Does anyone know of good tasting low fat chocolate milk? I have tried one, but it just was not the same. Since I always have a glass in the morning, I would love to use those 400+ calories somewhere else.

Thanks

Irene

Living an hour and odd minutes outside of Chicago for nearly 32 years, and this was my first visit to Navy Pier. Believe me, it's much nicer in July, and was gorgeous yesterday.

I had a new yogurt today too...Weight Watchers Cherry Cheesecake. Review: OK. I'm weird. I like plain yogurt...but add a handful of granola or trail mix. My next investigation is the ice cream aisle. I like the Skinny Cow mini fudge bars (50 cal. each) but wonder about the calories in frozen yogurt. Always looking for a good end-of-the-day dessert...

Lynn, that sounds wonderful! I've actually been to Navy Pier! One of my sisters, who's also a teacher, lives outside of Chicago and my husband and I were there one January--Navy Pier was NOT the place to be in bad weather! But we had snow as we were leaving the airport, which is a rare occurance for us, so it was fun.

I love yogurt and had a new one this morning: Yoplait Light Pineapple Upside Down Cake! It was delicious and would make as good a snack at 110 calories as some of the other options we've talked about. It was part of my delicious breakfast!

We exercised one of the benefits of teaching yesterday...my husband, his brother and wife and I all drove our bikes to the Chicago lakefront and rode along the lake for 23 miles. It was a gorgeous day, found free parking right away and had a wonderful time. Parked at Foster Ave. Beach and rode south to Soldier Field. Coming back we stopped for lunch and ice cream at Navy Pier. Other than sore butt bones the last 5 miles, I felt great. We weren't burning up the bike path (passed by many cyclists--and one RUNNER!!) by any means...enjoying the weather and views.

The benefits of teaching? Being able to play on weekdays in the summer--relieves battle fatigue!

Brenda, I'm going to try the sit up test today! I can do them without problems, usually--but push ups? Maybe 10, modified, at best! Way to go, and thanks for the link.

Yevette and Joyce, your snacks sound great. I went to get a pudding last night and didn't have any! So I had tomatoes from a neighbor's garden instead. It actually was really satisfying! I think we need to have a small garden again...

And congrats on your pound down, Irene! One pound towards the rest of it gone!

Today is a strength training day but I have time to do a little cardio.

I worked on my strength training last week and saw results in my testing (not weight loss still tho...) I found the article about PT so last week I started pusheup... tested at 18 and last week went to 28. That's pretty amazing for my age.

this week I'm going to start the AB testing on the opposite days. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness

I also didn't track or give much thought to my eating last week, so i gained the 1 1/2 lbs which I lost. But it's a new week! I'll keep plugging along!

Welcome Barbara, you picked a wonderful group to join. I myself am still a newbie, and this was the group that made we feel most welcome. Everyone is very caring and will help you with any question you have.

As for a snack, I either eat a fat free pudding cup or a WW ice cream cup. I always make sure I leave enough calories so I can indulge. It makes me feel better when I know I can something "good".

I weighed in today, and lost one pound last week. Not much but it's one more down! emoticon

Mary, I'll have try the almond addition, it sounds great and gives you something to bite on.

I agree with Joyce about men, I don't even ask my husband about his weight loss, or I will get discouraged.

Barbara and Pandora, don't feel too bad...my husband lost 20 pounds since I've joined SP ( I've only lost 3!!), looked great in his tux at our daughter's wedding last week, and still indulges in beer and Jack Daniels...go figure! But we won't fall victim to the 'oh well' syndrome. We're all in this together! Drink lots of water and add to your exercise program. Keeping track of my food takes a lot of time but it's really an eye-opener.

Chin(s!) up...

Edit: Joyce and Yevette, I forgot to read farther down...I love the ff chocolate pudding and sometimes put ff Cool Whip on it to feel really decadent! And the Skinny Cow/WW treats that are under 100 calories are great. Sometimes a small bowl of cereal and milk is a great way to get more calcium and fill you up, too.

I'm a little discouraged today after weighing and finding that I've gained a pound and a half. However it's time to look at my own little system of denial and delusion. I know I haven't been exercising enough, but eating crab alfredo linguini, and a cheddar biscuit at Red Lobster over the weekend, and having movie theater popcorn, while being enthralled in the X-Files movie is not really staying on track for losing weight. I've started my day, today, with a mile walk with my dogs and I will think before I eat today. Great day to all of you!!!! emoticon emoticon

I feel so much better after reading this string of emails!! I am very new to sparkpages -- my 1st week. Both my husband and I started at the same time.

I had a good week tracking my food everyday (a new thing for me). I stayed within the recommended calories per day. I still need to increase my exercise - but getting the food under control - I thought would be a good start for week one.

I weighed in the morning -- and gained a pound!!!
If i just stayed the same -- it wouldn't be so bad --but I definitely wasn't expecting this! Of course my husband lost 2+ pound (while still having a few beers during the week!).

Anyway -- I am not going to let this get me down.
I am going to start incorporating exercise, look at the sodium, and increase my water intake. I got all these ideas from your emails.

Before this I felt like crying -- now I am determined not to quit!
thanks!

Yevette - I'm a chocolate person so I plan on a Skinny Cow chocolate fudge cone every evening about an hour after dinner. It's only 150 calories so fits right in and it's so creamy and good it removes all cravings.

Also, sometimes I mix cottage cheese with fat free flavored yogurt. This way I get a good supply of calcium. Sometimes I mix yogurt with Fiber One cereal and this way I get a load of fiber.

To all - it's good to know we are all struggling with losing the weight around our middle. I comfort myself by the reminder that if I stick to my eating and exercise programs sooner or later the lbs will drop.

So let's all keep on keeping on and we'll get to our goal.

Hi Brenda,
I guess the key is to not give up. Depending your age, ie post menopausal women tend to have a difficult time shedding pounds, especially those pesky ones that appear around your mid section. I just hate when that happens.
Keep on trucking... emoticon

Good morning Mary,
The almonds are a good addition, I keep meaning to get some, maybe today.
I'm anxious to weigh in this week, I skipped last week, after spending the day at my sister's the day before my weigh in day. Self proclaimed my sister says, "if you stay over at her house you will gain weight". I had already been dipping into the bowl of chips on 2 different tables so... Needless to say, I scooped up my Mom and we were out of there before the nightfall.
A QUERY TO ALL - Do you include a "healthy" treat to your day, if so what is it? emoticon

Yevette, I get the liittle Breakstone cottage cheese containers for school, mix Dole mandarin oranges and a tablespoon of almonds, and it makes it really good! Actually, any fruit in cottage cheese is great.

Irene, I've only been to Matagorda once but it was so peaceful. Too bad with the bridge and the tourists...but it will be a while, won't it?

Brenda, you've come to the right place! We're almost all struggling with 'doing it right' and not seeing the pounds roll off. No one is giving up, though, and that's the key and the spirit! Do you strength train a couple of days a week? That builds muscle and revs up the metabolism...

HI Joyce,
My husband is near Steamboat; they have been having some rain but he hasn't mentioned the temps being real high. Here in Orlando the temps are in the mid 90's but since I've been here for 5 weeks I've acclimated to the heat.
RE: breakfast bars, i'm so addicted to Met Rx protein bars, the peanut butter ones, I have one each morning before I go to my kickboxing class. When I get back home I have some cottage cheese with cantaloupe most mornings. I really have always hated cottage cheese but the fruit helps heaps.

Thanks for making me feel good. It is rather satisfying to know that I can eat out without caving.
Mary, your lasagna sounds great. I have to try it with my recipe. I haven't fixed lasagna in quiet a while because my recipe is so fattening, but good.
Yes, the photograph is from Marcus' balcony. He lives right on the beach on Matagorda Bay. What a live. I love visiting him, because it is such a relaxed atmosphere there. At least for now. Apparently they are constructing a new bridge, and Marcus said once the bridge is finished, it will probably turn into another tourist island like Galveston.

Hooray for your resolution, Irene, and hooray for sons who take parents out to dinner! Is it from his balcony that the gorgeous sunset picture you have was taken? (Boy, that's a misconstructed sentence, lol) I loved it!

I made a big salad and lasagne for dinner with ff Ricotta cheese, WW cheese and light Ragu. The hamburger meat was Amy's, 4% lean. Very satisfying and we're happily full.

It may have been torture watching the others eat BUT it won't be torture when you get on the scale. You won!!!!

Thanks for the great idea for the breakfast bars Joyce, I never would have thought that they were that low in calories. I will definitely put these on my list.

Our oldest son surprised us with a visit today, and it is wonderful to see him. He lives in Matagorda Bay and has the perfect job. He lives right on the beach and only has a 10 min. drive to work. While we enjoyed seeing him, he insisted on taking us out to dinner, and guess what, he wanted to eat Mexican Food. I just had to laugh, but I was good. I only had a bowl of chicken soup and a fajita salad. Although it was torture watching everyone else eat all the wonderful food, I actually feel great and not weighed down. emoticon

Irene, thanks so much for the Goodie and your sweet note!

Joyce, I always eat breakfast now, too. I look back at the whole time my children were growing up and I never ate breakfast, hardly ate lunch, then like you said, Irene, I would graze through fixing dinner and eat a big dinner. But I was THIN! If I know I'm going out for lunch or dinner now I may limit my morning calories and save up for the night but we rarely eat late. Our school kitchen is right next door to my classroom so I can go around the corner and get whatever I bring very easily.

Last year I started bringing a V-8 to have during the kids' snack time. I got in extra veggies and it held me til lunch. I think I'll make up a list of low calorie things to bring and leave at school for those days I run out of my lunch items. The breakfast bars are a great idea!

I've started having breakfast bars because they are limited calories (between 140 and 190) but have lost of protein and vitamins. The one's I chose are South Beach Cereal Bar (140 cal, 7 pro), Pure Protein (190 cal and 20 pro) and Kellogs Bkfst Bar (190 cal - can't remember the protein). They are tasty, satisfying and most times hold me until lunch.

Mary, thanks for the goody. It was very sweet of you.
I always take my lunch, I simply don't have time to go to the cafeteria and stand in line. My problem is that in the past I just always took a couple of yogurt and some cheese sticks, and since I didn't eat breakfast, I usually was starving after my evening exercise and would graze! I am planning (and hopefully I can stick with it) to follow my meal plan and take breakfast and lunch with me. I don't know when my conference period is yet, but I usually get to work 45 min. early, which should allow me to have time to eat breakfast.
I don't have a refrigerator in my room, but I think I will invest in one. That way I could take several meals and keep it in there.

Joyce, that's a great idea. Thanks so much! I'll have to look it up. We have venison tamales a lot (my husband hunts and venison is so lowfat) and we make our own taco salad with lowfat cheese, no dressing, beans, etc. Alas, it's the chips and salsa that draw me, much less the Margherita with salt, lol! What happened to those days when you could lose 5 pounds after a big night out on the town by just cutting back a little the next week? Oh, middle age is so limiting!

Mary - If you want to wallow in Mexican food and don't mind cooking, there is a good cookbook called 101 Great Lowfat Mexican dishes by Margaet Martinez. We've made quite a few of the recipes and they are quite good and healthy. I know eating Mexican out is great but my blood pressure goes up from the sodium and I found this cookbook very low in sodium but high in spicy flavor.

I left you a message on your Spark Page, Irene. We have a lot in common...!

Do most of you take a lunch to work or eat out? What about during the week or weekend nights? Since we don't have kids at home any more, it's so easy to either go somewhere or order in. I do cook healthy meals at home and my husband is an excellent cook but sometimes I just want to wallow in Mexican food and not worry about the consequences!

Good morning,

Mary, we also decided that we really did not want to have to pack up everything and move ever time a hurricane threatened. After Rita we had enough. We have some friends who live in Orange, TX., and they had a terrible time after Rita. It was weeks before anyone had electricity, and drinking water was sparse too. We definitely do not want to have to go through anything that traumatic when we are retirement age.

Oh, Irene, we talked about building on Tiki, too. There were 2 nice sized lots right next to my sister in law but a builder bought them and the price went sky high! And after spending 10 hours on the Grand Parkway trying to get out of town during Hurricane Rita, I think living so near the Gulf would do us in...

I think each teacher has a "special place" that's just for him or her. One of my sisters teaches jr. high and can't imagine that another is in 1st grade or that I love kindegarten! Two of my children are 2nd grade and a language arts specialist...to each his/her own! I know I couldn't do high school.

But we all have the same issues with goodies in the teacher's lounge and that overwhelming urge to nap before grading papers instead of exercising, right?

Well, we are back to being sunny and sweltering. Mary, my husband and I love Tiki Island. We thought about investing into a retirement home there, but decided that it was not a wise idea as close to the coast and low lying it is.
I can only imagine what you Kindergarten teachers have to go through. The desks at high school are not comfortable, but at least they are a decent size.

2Rejoice, I do think that not eating out, although not fun, takes care of too much sodium, high extra calories, and lots of temptation!! I don't take any meds for high blood pressure or cholestrol and hope I can keep it that way.

Hiker04, your weight is great! We have a kindergarten teachers group here at SP that you are most welcome to check out. Sitting on the floor and/or those tiny chairs is SO difficult no matter what my weight--my hips and muscles just don't always cooperate. My doctor said not to sit on the tiny chairs but in small group lessons it's almost impossible not to! My knees are up around my chin and I moan and groan getting up. At least it gets a laugh out of the kids! Congrats on your continued journey here.

I, too, teach kindergarten and can relate to the getting up and down with my kinders. I've been a member now for 1yr. I lost 10 pounds in the first 7 months. The end of the school year I really got off track and gained back 5 lbs. but I'm determined to keep going. In Feb. when I had my cholesteral checked, I talked my Dr. into putting me on a lower dose of my statins because of my healthier eating and weight loss. Today I had a recheck and my good numbers remained good. So...even if we don't always see visiable results on the outside, things are better on the inside.

I've stopped going out almost completely because I have to limit my sodium in order to maintain healthy blood pressure without drugs.

I do take healthy leftovers for lunch, Smart Ones or similar dinners, sandwiches, etc. I will do a better job of planning supper---if we can avoid going out, it's so much better~

When I worked full time I found it helped if made some casseroles and froze them in individual servings. That way if all else failed, I grabbed a home made "TV dinner" for lunch or dinner.

We have relatives on Tiki Island so we're on your end of Houston at times, Irene! It's still raining here, too. And neither of our boys are ready to get married--so similar, huh?

I've talked to 2 teacher friends today and we're vowing to eat better and keep up the exercise this year. It gets harder each year to get down on the floor with our kiddies...and getting up is even worse! Here's to better habits for all of us!

Hello, we live east of Houston, in La Porte, and we certainly needed the rain too. Fortunately we never lost power. It is still raining, and our poor dog is not very happy. I always take him walking in the morning and every time I move he looks at me very hopeful.
Congratulations on you daughter's marriage. We have two sons, and neither one of them is interested in marriage.
We start school again on the 19th of August, and I am going to have to work very hard at eating right. I am not worried about exercising, I always make time for that, but I have a tendency to eat poorly due to the lack of time. Therefore, one of my goals is to spend Sundays planning all my meals for the week.

Irene, we're in Houston---Dolly brought a 4 hour power failure on my side of the street only, and lots of well-needed rain, too. Today's a gentle, steady rain that makes me want to curl up with my book. I see you're a teacher, too---I've got my back to scho0ol parent newsletter to deliver to school by the 31. Summer's almost over!

I worked out yesterday and today. Our daughter got married on Saturday and I was a comfy slug for 4 days! But I'm back into my routine and will not get lazy this school year!
