My internet has been down all day (due tot eh snow, I guess). wow. . . this is a very heavy thread today. I am sorry for all you are dealing with, lauren and Elise, but I absolutely agree that we have to put our own health FIRST. Just get right back on the horse, Mary, and contineu with your no night-time eating challenge (I am day 6 of 21 today!).

I feel better, stomach still a little queezy. Did get on the treadmill. We are pretty much snowed in here in northern NJ w/ about 13" of snow and maybe 3-6 more to come later. I watched 'Julie and Julia' on DVD - really enjoyed it. then read a novel most of the rest of the day. Had an apple as my afternoon snack. Apples are really filling - try to have one every day!

It seems that we all need a big HUG!!!!! Sometimes we get so caught up in life we forget that we need to take care of ourself first in order to be anyone for someone else. Instead of feeling guilty about taking off work, say instead to yourself, I am taking off work so I can be better for my coworkers and protect them from illness. You deserve time off.

Mary, tough situation. Sometimes the hardest thing we have to do with family is separate our love from what needs to be done for their benefit. Hope things will work out for you. Is there other siblings to help you?
Sending you all a sunny hug. We need that warm weather to perk us up.

Guilt is my middle name! I am always feeling guilty about letting someone down, not realizing I am also letting myself down. Even being home sick from work this week makes me anxious that I am letting my team down, but I would be the first to tell one of them to stay home if they weren't feeling well. This week I decided to take my own advice and try to recuperate rather than returning to work before I felt better like I usually do. There is hope for people like us, we just have to get there slowly.

I often wonder why I don't weigh 20 pounds as well. I worry so much, you'd think that would burn the calories faster than a workout.

Hope you have a wonderful day. Remember, some things are beyond your control.

Lauren

Oh Lauren, I am sorry for your load too, sister. Yours is bigger and I am glad you are putting your needs first and telling me to do the same. That's much needed validation, thank you. I swear if I can drop the guilt about it, it would probably weigh out to be about the 20 lbs. I need to lose! Hope this last comment made you laugh! Mary

Mary, I can totally understand what you are going through. My dad has Alzheimers as well and my 84 year old mother with a triple bypass, pacemaker, blocked carotid arteries, diabetes, etc looks after him. They both need to go into care but refuse. I am 3500 km away dealing with a seriously ill and injured husband and feel torn in two. I should be there but I should be here. Oh, and then there's the going to work to support the family. I refuse to get a bigger plate, and I make sure there is room on the plate I do have to get some exercise done for myself.

Put yourself first at least once a day.

Thinking of you.

MARYBTHIN - Wow, you DO have "a lot on your plate", don't you? Please try to take care of yourself; with all of that going on, it's easy to push your needs aside, but as flight attendants tell you to put your oxygen mask on before your child's so you'll be OK, it's the same theory - you have to take care of yourself FIRST so you can be around to take care of others!

CIRCUSKELLI - One of THOSE days, huh? I didn't feel the earthquake up here in Wisconsin, at least I don't think I did; may have thought it was the snowplows coming through!

Doing my best...one day at a time.

Happy Woohoo Wednesday!!

How are you doing today?

Yesterday, I got all of my water in, tracked my food, and got in a bunch of strength training. The kids and I played Wii for a bit last night, too. That was fun!

Today started off to be one of "those" days - an earthquake woke me at 4am - AN EARTHQUAKE! In Northern, IL! Crazy! I was so hoping for a snow day today - after listening to the wind blowing all that snow around outside, I wanted nothing more than to be able to hide under the covers. Sadly, it was not meant to be, although I considered calling my own snow day for the kids and I. Instead, I got up, got dressed and made it in to work. The van's windshield wipers were frozen and hardly working, MiPod konked out on me four times on the way to work, and I forgot my lunch. Ugh. I'm NOT giving up, though! I'm still working on my streaks!

Obstacles: THIS MORNING - If I can overcome that, the rest of the day will be a breeze. ;)

What's new in your corner of the world?

Take care,

Kelli

Okay, I promise, this is my 3rd & last post of the day. I fell off the NJF & NNTE 7 day mini challenge yesterday. I am an emotional eater! My Alzheimer's stricken Mom has been with me while Dad's in the hospital recovering from Congestive Heart Failure (the 2nd time in 3 weeks). My 14 yr old daughter is recovering from having all 4 wisdom teeth removed. My husband's out of town on business. My 12 yr. old son is fine, thank you. I'm running a Boy Scout Dinner Fundraiser and in charge of updating our 3 Teacher's Lounges in our schools. My dad told me yesterday to get a bigger plate. I told him "No, I am done." If he's not going to take care of himself properly and Mom, who also seems to have a constant Cellulitus, then my sister and I are seeking a local long term care facility for Mom. I cannot continue to raise my family, care for my elderly parents and take care of myself. I am sure this is part of why I've been carrying around an extra 20 lbs for over a year. It's a buffer!

Welcome Cindy! I'm fairly new too (joined 1/28). I also joined because I'm finding it harder to take off the weight than when I was younger. There's so much information and support here on SparkPeople, it's almost a little overwhelming. Everyday I find something new & interesting. Wishing you success! Mary

Well, not getting to the gym today. Started feeling yucky (nausea/stomache pain) mid-afternoon. There is a nasty stomach virus going around and I really hope I don't have it. Anyway, tired and achey so came home and made myself a cup of tea. Gonna rest. Have no appetite (not a bad thing, I guess). My office will probably be closed tomorrow so i can rest. BBL.

Good for you, Jill. Have fun at the gym.

Maybe you will have to burn more calories shovelling tonight.

I live in Alberta, Canada, so I used to having snow as well.

Ugh. . . Lauren. It is SO frustrating being sick and not able to exercise. i feel for you. Hopefully you have lost a bit of your appetite too and that will help with your calorie intake :-)

I am on day 5 of 21 of my no night-time eating. Surprisingly, the cravings have not been bad. I will go to the gym after work today.

We are expecting 9-12 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow.

Hi everyone. I'm home sick for day two. Yesterday I kept my eating within my range but I missed being able to exercise. It seems like every time I decide to seriously exercise and watch my food intake, I get sick or injured. I can't do any cardio because of coughing whenever I move. I will keep my food in control again today. So far I have made it 9 days in a row of better eating and no night time binging.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Hey there Sparkies! How are you doing today? Is it snowing where you are?

Yesterday, I got most of my water in, tracked my food, and got in a bit of strength training. Boy was I tired yesterday! Even though I was feeling a bit better by the afternoon, I still couldn't wait to get home last night.

Today I'm still a bit tired, but I'll live. :) I'm still working on my streaks!

Obstacles: Snow. Lots of steadily falling snow makes me feel like I want to curl up with a book and a blankie and some hot cocoa.

Tomorrow will be better.

What's new in your world?

Take care,

Kelli

Good for you Mary! I notice on your counter that we are around the same weight with the same goal...may be you are the motivation I need!

I've been stuck at this same weight forever! I really think that it has to be food because I'm working out lots, but I'm not as good at tracking my food. I find when I do track it, I stay in my range, but still, no budging that dang scale or the measuring tape either...still at least I feel better and stronger.

I feeeeeel good, nananananana, like I knew that I would, nanananananana. Okay, I'll stop right there. Just be happy there's no actual volume with the lyrics! Yesterday I accomplished Day 2 of no junk food, no night time eating. I also did 30 minutes on the Elliptical and 30 minutes Personal Training. This is week 9 of me working out with a Trainer and week 3 of joing SparkPeople. It's the first time I feel like I'm in charge of my food, instead of food being in charge of me. Life is good! WTG Mary! Each day will build on the next so keep it up. I am repeating today as day 4 of 21 of my no night-time eating challenge. Yesterday was only so-so for me because of the superbowl and snacks we had out during the game. I wasn't terrible, but i still feel I need to not count yesterday. Today has been a great day with a spin class and healthy bkfst and lunch. I am going to make a lo-cal eggplant parm recipe I found on this site for dinner.

Hope you feel better, Lauren. And congrats on 8 days in a row of the challenge - i think you have gotten past the most difficult part already (the first week).

Good morning, CircusKelli. No, I did not watch the game at all. I have had no interest in football since I was a teenager with a boyfriend who liked it.

I am home sick today. Coughing, sore ears, runny nose, sore throat, the whole works. Slept until 9:30 so I guess I was very tired as well.

I avoided night time eating again, making it 8 days of my streak. I hope to keep it up.

I hope your day improves Kelli. Too bad your job doesn't encourage naps, as that is what is sounds like you need.

Hello Sparkies - I'm counting on my daily dose of SparkPeople here to energize me today.

Yesterday, I got most of my water in, tracked my food, and got some things done around the house. Other than that, I didn't do much of anything in the way of exercising. I watched some of the SuperBowl with Hubby last night after the kids were in bed, (mostly reading in between commercial breaks) then watched "Undercover Boss" because it seemed interesting. I went to bed late, then couldn't fall asleep. I woke up several times in the night, and has some weird dreams in between.

Today I was awake in time to hear the newspaper delivered. I'm so. very. tired.
I'm trying to overcome it, though. I've done a little strength training this morning, and have been tracking my food and drinking my water. I've even completed one "office lap" in an effort to wake up a bit.

Obstacles: Tired. And whiney. whine whine whine

Tomorrow will be better.

What's new in your world? How are you doing today? Did you watch the game last night?

Take care,

Kelli

Yesterday day was Day #1 of my mini-challenge of No Junk Food & No Evening Eating for 7 Days. I did it on Super Bowl Sunday too! I made sure I ate during the day, breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner. I've got to tell you, I love waking up in the morning and feeling skinny. It's so much better than the bloat or a food hangover. Thanks again JillST and LaurenElise for the inspiration!

Slept late, missed church. I did get laundry for this half of the week done. Ready to go back to work in the a.m. I do good about not night snacking EXCEPT on work days. I have a tendency to not eat except lunch around 11:00, maybe a yogurt around 4;30 and then STARVING when I get home around 8 p.m. I'm going to take a frozen dinner to eat around 6 p.m. maybe that that will prevent the 8p.m. to 10 p.m. gorge.

Hello Sparkies... I'm just not feeling very sparkly today.

Yesterday, I walked for about 25 minutes (at the grocery store) and did a lot of cleaning out the "little spaces" at home, went through all the mail, paperwork and paid some bills. I cleaned out the cabinet above my desk in the kitchen, and washed and folded all the laundry. I did poorly with my food, too.

Today isn't much better with exercise and food. I did some vacuuming and straightening around the house. After lunch, I napped for a bit. I caught up on my Spark emails, and I'm still planning on setting my goals for the week.

Obstacles: Just me.

End of week streak/goal update:
30 min exercise 3 x week - 4/7 days
60 crunches a day - 4/7 days
Limit Coca-Cola intake - 4/5 days
4 fruits, veggies / day - 3/5 days
8 glasses water / day - 5/7 days
20 min strength training / day - 5/7 days
The Spark - Chapter 7 - done
3 laps around office / day - 4/5 days

Starting January Weight: 148.80
Starting February Weight: 146.4
1/31 - 146.4
2/7 - 146.8
2/14 -
2/21 -
2/28 -
Goal: 140

February Goals:
Lose 5 lbs
700 fitness minutes
Exercise consistently
Watch intake, stay close/within ranges

Reward:
New Jeans!

This week's goals/streaks:
Lose 2 lbs.
30 min exercise 3 x week
60 crunches a day
Limit Coca-Cola intake
4 fruits, veggies / day
8 glasses water / day
20 min strength training / day
The Spark - Chapter 8
Find More Time - Chapter 6

So far today I have got all the grocery shopping done and then spent 75 minutes carpet cleaning my son's room. That's a nice upper body workout with all of that pushing and pulling. He is away to California and left us here with all of the snow and cold weather!

Next, a bit of a break to watch the last 1/2 hour of a movie then who knows?

Hi Mary! Yes, welcome to the 'no nightime eating' challenge. Today is day 4 of 21 for me (i think starting with a 7 day mini challenge is a great idea). The reason I chose 21 days is that research shows it takes about 3 weeks to stop an ingrained habit.

Today will be interesting with DH and DS wanting lots of junk goodies for super bowl. I found a great low-cal low-fat hot chicken wing dip in spark recipes and I am going to make it for myself and have it with raw veggies and some baked pita chips.

I'm off to the gym now to get in my cardio and strength training. hoep everyone has a fun, healthy and successful day!

Welcome to our little challenge, Mary. It's hard for me to stay out of the kitchen at night but it's getting a lot easier as time goes by. I hope you are successful on your 7 day challenge.

Off to have breakfast and then do the grocery shopping which is another challenge with all of the luscious things in the bakery department.

WOW, I am inspired, JillST and LaurenElise! Today I will begin a 7 day Challenge of no junk food or evening eating. I never realized how much of an issue this was for others too. I'm fairly new to SparkPeople and am just getting used to reading these boards. I'm glad. What an eye opener and an inspiration. I'm now beginning to understand why these boards are important...support & inspiration. Thank you!

I managed to get in day 7 of no junk food and eating in my calorie range. This is a big break through for me. Weekends and evenings are notorious for me to overeat. I did some weights, twistboard and a cardio video and now will do some knitting.

I will make it through tomorrow successfully as well!(a personal pep talk)

Sorry, can't answer you question, Jill.

I have been busy all morning working on my to-do list of laundry, finances, filing, shredding, cleaning, etc. Not exciting, but at least the list is getting checked off.

I think tonight will be a treadmill night for today's exercise and then some weights.j

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Saturday. I also hope those of you in the U.S. being affected by the huge snowfall are all okay.

I have a question: on this site is there a way to create an individual (or team) goal and track it? I am interested in a 21 day 'no night time eating' challenge or goal and it would be nice to be able to track it as a motivator.

I'm in with you JillST. I guess this is day 6 for me of no junk food or evening eating. I turned down cake and chips at work today. I went out to dinner and had broccoli instead of fries! I don't do that very often.

Now to get some exercise in.

Lauren

Day 2 of 21 of my 'no night-time eating' challenge to myself. Anyone want to join me in this challenge? I had a good day today - all healthy food and never felt too hungry. I went to the gym after work then came home and made my own dinner (DH and DS get take out Chinese take-out every Friday) - had a big salad, some WW pasta and a frozen indian spinach dish. I am trying to limit meat and go as vegetarian as possible (maybe fish once a week and chicken once a week). Good luck to everyone for a great and successful weekend

Hi all,
I'm an emotional eater too... especially at night. I've been doing good food-wise for the last couple of days because I'm so sick with a head cold. I tried to walk today, but only made it half a block. I'm toxing my body up with Neo Citran, after eating soooo clean for awhile. I can't take it though, so Neo Citran is my friend right now.

Hello, thanks the warm welcome !!!

I am quite happy with myself today : since I started 3 days ago I stayed within my nitrition ranges and ate only healthy foods : whole grain bread, fruits, vegetables, potatoes, low-fat dairies, small portions of meat.
I tried to lose weight before and was pretty successful, but at some point the planning got too overwhelming and I soon started to overeat again. Also I was integrating my favorites junk foods into the tracker, not to feel deprived, but this time I decided not only to lose weight but to eat only healthy food too. After 43 years (30 years of abuse) my body deserves a bit of a rest.
So this time I made a really simple plan, the only variation is the dinner.
And so far so good, I did stick to it 3 days in a row...
Also I bought yesterday a podometer and I recorded 14,000 steps today... I did not do the strenght training planned by Sparkpeople though, I am a real couch potato and I fear if I push myself too much I will get discouraged and give up.
If I can first stick to the 10,000 steps a day I'd be happy for now.
My issue is not really weight in itself, it's buiding an healthier lifestyle... weight should decrease as slow as it came on, but decrease at last !

I have planned my drinks inside my nutrition plan, so I cannot get less than 10 cups of water a day... and I replaced coffee by green tea. If I occasionnaly drink a cup of coffee, I drink right away 2 cups of water extra.

And I went yesterday to bed early and caught my 8 hours sleep for the first time in ages ! Yay ! I hope I can keep it up that way, sleep is one of my worse issues since my husband stays up late in the night and forgets the time if I don't go spank him around 1 am emoticon

I wish you all a lot of strenght ! We can make it !

We are having the most outrageously big snowflakes coming down all day here. Its making a huge blanket of snow. These snowflakes are incredible to watch as much of it is an inch or bigger. It looks like someone tore up white confetti paper and is shaking it down. WOW its beautiful to see God's handywork. Ok I dont like to drive in it though. I was lucky and off today. So a good book by the fireplace while my kids went to school. Yippee!!!
