Came back to this topic because I was wondering yesterday what I'll look like as a skinny person. I've been wearing size 20 since I was 13. I wonder what wearing a 10 feels like!

I am worried about it, but right now I'm so far at the beginning of this journey I can't let myself think about it too much. We all want to look good, but we really need to feel good physically, and for that reason alone I'll take the loose skin over the full fat.

I have been on and off the weight loss wagon for quite some time now. The idea of loose skin is definitely a concern for me. If I work hard, eat right, and reach my goal weight, I definitely want to show it off. I'm about to hop back on the wagon, but I will be incorporating strength training and a moisturizing regimen to help combat it.

I do think about loose skin, but I don't know that I'm scared of it. I'm really working on being more rational these days, & for me... I'm more scared of premature death than losing weight & having some extra skin. Again, that's just me.

(I should mention that my husband already told me I can have whatever surgeries are necessary once I reach my goals. We both recognize loose skin could get uncomfortable. NO, we're not rich - yet - but we're working on it. :-)

Im kinda worried about it too! But I think i'll make some natural body butter...made with pure cocoa butter and Shea butter and start using that as I am allergic to most perfumy stuff on the market anyway. Its what all the high dollar lotions and potions are supposed to have in them, just without all the other unpronouncable unnatural stuff.
I'll let y'all know how it works.

I'm 34 y.o. I've been dieting since middle school and have had stretch marks since 2nd grade. I've had two major weight losses during my lifetime both of approximately 100lbs. Even in grade school I had a problem with jiggly arms. I would come home after school and pick the dumb bells and work on my triceps. I remember a teacher telling me to drink lots of milk because that would keep my skin from sagging. I realized soon that wasn't true after all the skim milk I chugged then still left with wings. Now my stomach has gotten bigger and I know there's going to excess skin there too. Does that mean when I reach my goal weight no tucked in shirts?
I started lotioning the saggy and potentially saggy areas a few months ago. I was using a lotion that's supposed to "restore" skin but now I can't find it anywhere. Hmm, maybe that's a sign. :) now I'm just trying to use up the abundance of "body" lotion that I have around the house the keep my skin moist and supple.
When I reach my goal weight I guess I'll just have keep wearing girdles, as for my arms maybe I can build enough muscle to fill them out a bit.

I am glad you asked this!
I have thought about the lose skin thing myself but so far I have not thought about it enough to worry about it. I just want to lose the weight and be healthy and able to play with my nephew and maybe do a small marathon someday, I was thinking since I am loseing it slow that I may not have a big amount of lose skin to worry about, however I will cross that and think about it more once I have lost all the weight and see how I look and feel and see how much of the lose skin I may have at that time.

I am really scared of loose skin. I have messaged some of the people on here that have lost over 100 pounds if they have had loose skin, and no one has answered me. I am hoping that if I lose the weight slowly that I will not have to deal with it.

God and Family and friends will get me through whatever comes my way.

A friend of mine had gastric bypass surgery about 2 years ago and had some pretty loose skin. She swears by those wraps. Her arms look pretty good from them anyhow and she lost a little over 100lbs. I'm not sure if she used any particular wrap or not.

I am worried about having loose skin. I have googled and searched ways to avoid loose skin. I lotion up everyday after my shower, drink loads of water, and strength train. Hopefully this will help but if not I'm not going to let that stop me. I have a small savings account that I put a little in every week on payday, sometimes just 10 dollars but if I have to I will use that for surgery.

I am definitely worried, but at this point, all I can do is keep losing and look at my options when the time comes. Had anyone ever thought about or had an experience with skin-tightening wraps?
I may try that as I go.

Yes, I am worried about loose hanging skin too! I'm just 3 yrs shy of 40 yrs old. I would really like to lose this weight before my 40 th birthday. I just figured my skin would bounce back before the big four-oh. Maybe maybe not... I also have tattoos on my arms. They aren't the best and I am afraid to also see them smaller. Anyway. Using the lotion sounds like a good idea.

As I am losing the weight fairly quickly, I am worried about it, yes. But, being healthy and slender is something I have wanted all my life (I've been heavy since I was a child) and being able to do all the things I want to do that I can't while heavy, will be well worth it!

Plus, I am doing everything else I can to mitigate the damage, lol. I strength train 3-5x a week, I drink a lot of water (8-12 glasses a day) and I use a lotion with collagen and elastin after every shower. I have lost almost 70lbs so far and while I can see it some, it isn't bad (mostly my inner thighs). I am sure there will be a bit more at my goal but I really think my preventative measures are helping though and it won't be as bad as it could be.

Either way, I will still be incredibly happy to lose the weight!

I'm not. I once weighed 400 pounds (at a little less than 300 now) so I've already got it... in the stomach area and under my arms especially. My husband doesn't care about the skin, so I can accept it... But when I was much younger, in my early 20s and had just managed to work my way down to 190 from that 400, it wrecked me when I found out that I would probably have to have surgery if I wanted to be rid of it for good. I guess I was naive, but I just assumed I'd shrink and be beautiful, lol. If I can ever afford it though, it's all going once I hit a healthy weight. I'd love to be rid of the chicken wings and tummy roll. :p

I hadn't really thought too much about loose skin until I started reading this...but, as with everyone else, I believe loose skin will be worth it if it means I've lost the weight. My skin has bounced back both times I've lost weight before (although I never had this much to lose), so I'm hoping that it will this time as well. I do my strength training and my cardio, and with a goal of 7 pounds a month, I know I'll be losing it slow and steady. Fingers crossed it's not a problem. I may even start using lotions to help.

I was just talking with my mom the other day about this... I am trying to do what I can to prevent it, at least in my arms and legs by working on toning while doing my cardio, but not sure what I'll be able to do about the belly. Thank you for the suggestions of vitamin E/moisturizing. I will definitely start that early. As others have said, I've been told that @ 32 my skin should tighten up eventually. I notice it already in my stomach. Spanx will definitely be our best friend lol. And agreed, I would prefer the skin, as much as it terrifies me... It's better than what we're dealing with now.

I can not imagine that anyone here (100 plus lbs to lose) has not thought about loose skin. I googled just as much about loose skin as I did about weight loss when I started out. I am getting to the point where my loose skin is becoming obvious. I said something to my husband about how much weight I am still carrying in my belly area and he responded by saying that it is not fat, just loose skin.
However, my stomach has hung for years, it was just fuller before. Now it is starting to get a little wrinkled. I am hoping that maybe it will spring back. When I compare to where it was 6 months ago, I know that the skin is several inches higher than it previously was.
I continue to do what I feel may help. During my shower I pumice all the areas on my body that have stretch marks (belly, breasts and inner thighs), and then put vitamin e oil on after drying. Has it helped?, I really can not know, but I will continue with it.
The thing is, I realize now that loose skin is worth it. I will never be able to afford surgery, but that it ok. I do feel better about the way I look, loose skin or not. Clothing hides a lot of flaws! Best of all, concerning my health, I feel better every day!

Oh- the other piece about insurance is that you have to have maintained your goal weight for a certain period of time, too. From the blog www.runsforcookies.com :

"It turns out that I meet the qualifications: 1) Lost 100+ pounds; 2) Kept it off for at least 6 months, and 3) Have rashes caused from loose skin on my belly."

If you're really interested in loose skin and knowing more about the surgery, I highly recommend Katie's blog. She goes into great detail and is pretty darn honest about the topic.

I lost 100 lbs in 2 years, and I barely have the loose skin, but I bet my insurance WOULD cover the surgery once I'm down to my goal weight (which I'll reach next year).

I read a blog from another SP member who talked about this issue. She did have loose skin, but her insurance company actually covered the surgery because she met certain guidelines. (Lost a substantial amount of weight, and the skin was causing rashes where it rubbed on her body.)

I do think about the loose skin thing from time to time, but honestly- I still think I'll look better in clothes if I"m down 100 lbs but with a little extra skin. I KNOW I'll feel better, so I can't see it as a reason to stop me.

I agree with Zellybear, too- you just gotta take it slow, do your ST, drink your water, and also use lots of lotion!

I'm kinda afraid what will happen to all my loose skin, too. It's not too bad yet, but I'm afraid as I lose more that it'll get yucky. Of course, I'd rather have saggy skin than be unhealthy. And I heard that strength training regularly will help the skin tighten.

I'm a little worried but I'd rather have the loose skin over being overweight and unhealthy any day! My husband on a few occasions made the comment about having loose skin and I simply told him, "Don't like it, don't look!!!"

I don't think it is shallow at all. It is hard to work so hard at losing all that weight knowing you still won't look like those skinny girls. If it is shallow... just call me Hal. I worry about it as well. I have been big for so long it is inevitable I think.

I'm not scared per se, but I know I will be frustrated by it. So, I've created a savings account for a potential surgery (and already plan to go to Toronto because it's cheaper there). Probably super shallow, I know- but I'm the sort of person who needs an action plan for the "just in case".

I'm trying to think positively. I've lost 45 over 8 months and haven't noticed anything...yet. I'm also hoping that losing slowly will help in this area. I'm working on a lot of toning stuff these days, hoping that will help too.

I am a little worried especially when my 17 year old daughter asked me about it the other day. I figured if I work on slowly and incorporate weight training then it won't be as bad as she thinks its going to be. We just have to wait and see. I can't think about it too much or else I might end up undoing all of the hard work that I have done thus far.

Heck yea I am worried BUT I know it is just the price of the game. I have well over 200lbs to lose and I have been overweight for more than 15 yrs. Loose skin is a given in my situation; frankly I can see it now and I am still well over 100lbs from goal weight.

The cost is astronomical and most insurance companies don't cover it because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. There are those cases where if it is complicating your life, or giving you health issues then insurance will but I have never been in the hospital for anything and I am a scaredy cat. I am preparing my mind for it that is for sure. I know that spanx, girldles etc. will certainly be my best friend when the time comes.

When I got down to 180 before, mine was horrible. It was so bad that I couldn't lose anymore weight because all of my extra weight was from skin! It's the worst in any places you have stretch marks, and I have them all over my body.
