It's a shame you threw out the old one. It probably just needed a good scrubbing and to be reseasoned. That said, starting out, I'd definitely get a preseasoned one, though it is easy enough to season your own, it's just time consuming, which I'm guessing you're probably pressed for this season. If I were to go out and buy new cast iron right now, I'd pick up some Lodge. Also, to really help with that anemia, I'd stick with the pure cast iron without the ceramic. The biggest thing about cast iron care, is you really don't want to use soap on it, it ruins the seasoning and that's what causes the rust.
