My Doctor told me that the BMI is a joke. I'm 170lbs, 5'2. Yes, I'm fat, yes, I'm chunky, yes, I have a LONG way to go, but by no means am I OBESE. I hate those words, and I hate the complex that comes with it...

I'm just glad that we are looking to make ourselves better! :)

I just checked my this weekend, 30.7 obese, I'm like no that can't be right, I know I'm a little chubby but obese, maybe if I change my weight or height. No, can't do that, it is what it is. Its a wake up call, but I can't deny it any longer. So yeah, I know how you feel. emoticon

My BMI started in "morbidly obese" - wow was that a wake up call! I've come down from "morbidly obese" to "obese class 2" and now to "obese class 1". My next big goal would be "overweight".

It's just another number, another measurement. Definitely not something to obsess over, but it's good to know.

BMI isn't one of my favorite things to see either. The word "obese" just sounds so incredibly awful. I'm not sure what my BMI is right at the moment, but I believe I'm probably still "obese" at this point. Ick!

Just take it one day at a time. That's all we can do. Lots of great advice here. Don't let that one number get you down!

i know - sometimes it can feel so overwhelming. It is so encouraging to see the success of people on this site. I think this site has all the keys to get us into the "healthy" bmi range (where I haven't been for a long time). BEst of luck - you can do it!

I feel ya.... It's so easy to gain a few pounds and then all of a sudden you are considered overweight or obese! It's so wrong to calculate everyone can not possibly be compared on the same BMI scale, we are all different, and hold are weight differently, it seems silly to make it so black and white!

I'm 5'4 and 153, BMI of 26.5, overweight is after 25...

I personally like the small goals-that's what is helping me not freak out. I cried when I did the weight/height ratio thing....not me, you know? I even blogged about this same thing on here-I've never had a weight problem so to realize I had one was overwhelming.

i was obese when i got real serious about spark too. now, after a year, i'm square in the middle of healthy. give yourself time. don't overwhelm yourself with the end goal. focus on 5 or 10 pounds at a time. or, better yet, focus on hitting your calorie range 5 of 7 days. or exercising 5-6 days a week. or hitting your water. or sleep. or whatever you deem important for you. set small, attainable goals. when you set health goals, the weight loss will follow.

We can all do this. BMI is just another thing to conquer. And remember they don't take into account bone structure just height and weight. I started out at 211 lbs and I am 5'4". Imagine what my BMI was. I am currentlt 165lbs and am officially just "overweight". my weight range is 117-140 for my height. If I was 117 I would look crack head skinny so don't let BMI freak you out, just be healthy!!!

Not too long ago I had that reality, and it is what slapped me in the face. I am now just under (still in the overweight category) but it really put me in check.

My BMI is 31. The word "obese" is the most frightening part of the BMI! The truth is the hardest part--I am obese for my height and frame. I'm currently at 152.4 and working toward 120. According to the BMI scale, I really should get down to 100 lbs, but 120 is a good, healthy, and safe weight for me. Good luck.
