I've always kind of wondered that. I drink probably a half gallon of iced tea a day AND 10 cups of water! I mean I LOVE to drink. But I LOVE your ideas about making flavored teas! I don't know why I never thought of that!! Silly silly me. SparkPeople is so great like that! :)

Personally, I only count water as water and nothing else and that is because I am an avid water drinker. I'm sure if I didn't like water so much, I would count certain teas as water as well.

I see steeping tea bags in plain water as the same thing as adding a squeeze of lemon or lime to water. It's still water.

Short version (from the second link): if you drink tea (or other caffeinated beverages) regularly, 8 oz of tea is almost exactly as hydrating as 8 oz tea. If you don't drink caffeine much so your body isn't used to it, count each cup as 2/3rds of a cup of water.

I got this on twitter:

We typically recommend 8 cups (64 oz's total) of straight up water/day

So I guess tea won't count as a substitute... :(

I do. I drink over 6 glasses of green tea everyday in addition to regular H2O.

Great question!
I count my brewed teas in my water count. I am a Teavana addict - some highly caffeinated and some decaf. Curious to see the final call on this. :-)

I have issues with getting enough 'water'...so I am often using Crystal Light or Decaf Iced Tea. As long as it is decaf then I think you are okay. But do try to get in a glass or two of H20. Putting slices of lemon in it help fight the bloat and add flavor.

I buy decaffeinated tea bags so there is no caffeine in it.

NJORDGAL...definitely with you..herbal teas....I actually have taken different ones and combined them for the flavor...base of green tea of jasmine green tea and added something like a peach detox or blueberry detox...nice light flavor, but at least it's not just plain green tea....sweet dreams, sleepy time are the kids favorites...and the zingers (celestial seasonings) are a nice alternative to coffees....

I sent a question about this to SP on twitter. If they answer, I'll get back to you! For me, counting tea as water would be heaven! But I've always heard that it'll dehydrate you, so it's probably the opposite - when drinking tea you should drink even more water...

I use a lot of the crystal light-type beverages and count them as water. I know it's not the same, but I simply will not drink enough plain water - it bores me to tears, and I will often not drink (unless it's super hot out) rather than drink water, and a squeeze of lemon or slice of cucumber is NOT enough of a difference! I try to still fit in several glasses of regular water a day, but there's no way I'd do 8+.

Considering that I LOVE soda, and have pretty much given that up, I think it's a reasonable compromise :)

Personally, I don't count caffeinated beverages as part of my water intake because they tend to have a dehydrating effect.

Now, if you're drinking decaff or herbal tea, I'm so with you, sister!

I make my own ice tea, boil the water and then steep the tea bags. I don't add any sugar or anything else except ice cubes to cool it down. I count this as part of my water intake since the tea bags don't have any calories, fat, sodium, etc. Would you do the same?? Am I cheating???
