I'm not only still here ... I recently seemed to just join when I restarted my program on Spark. Happy to be included in roll call though.

Not a big internet user. This is about the most I do except library e-books and audio books I borrow for free.

Laura:

Gluten and sugar are inflammatory foods, so if you have arthritis or some other inflammatory problem it aggravates the system and causes more pain. If you have sinus problems, dairy causes mucus, so it's good to avoid or limit dairy.

I went off the wagon when I was away and my pain and sinus problems started to return. I've watched it since I got back and haven't had to take anything in several days.

Today I go to the accountant to get my taxes done. God how I hate this, even though I expect a refund.

Gail, it's awesome that you are having such success cutting out gluten and sugar. I was doing that at the beginning of the year and need to get back to it. Even though I wasn't seeing a lot of movement on the scale, I felt fantastic!

Hi Guys:

I'm still here but when I found I was the only one posting for a while I stopped. Every now and again I return to see what if anything is happening. I've been have a lot of weight loss success eliminating gluten and sugar, and cutting way back on dairy. Though exercise is very important for good health, I have found that success with weight loss focuses around diet. For several months now I've been eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies, poultry and fish. I eat red meat, but not as much and not as often. No, I haven't given up salt, but I have cut back. ( Salt rather than sugar has always been my nemesis.)

Have a good week everyone.

Hi! I'm here, and new. Started using SP seriously about a month ago. Loving the website. It makes tracking my nutrition/exercise much easier. In the past, I've just estimated how much I was eating, but in hindsight I was really far off from the actual numbers. For instance, I had no idea cheese was so calorie-rich, but now I know to really limit how much of it I eat.

Best of luck to everyone on the website!

The Madison group is pretty quiet, but there are a few of us still around. There is usually a monthly chat thread, although December kind of got away from me with school, so I know I wasn't on it this month.

Welcome back and I hope that you can find more of what you are looking for this time around! I love SP mainly for some of the wonderful friends I've made, both online and even in real life, and the support we offer each other. The site has changed a lot since you were on last and there are a ton of great resources available. Let me know if you have any questions, or just want to chat!

Is the Madison group really still around? I haven't been on here for over 2 years, then out of the blue I get a message from someone on Spark. Obviously I wasn't getting what I needed for motivation on this site then, but now I feel like I've been needing it more than ever. How is everyone else doing???

Hi:

Anyone out there? I know, it's a beautiful Sunday and you all want to take advantage of the wonderful weather.

I'm very happy having had a weekend with my granddaughters from NC. We all enjoyed looking at old family photos and getting a good laugh from the "hippie" years.

Weight was down again this week so whatever I'm doing is working.

Good Morning:

Yesterday I napped for two hours and it made all the difference in my sleep. I didn't get up till 6:15 am this morning having gone to bed 9 or 10 last night. Yesterday two van loads of things to auction went to the Wise Owl Auctions. to his business. In the evening a freecycler came by and picked up some big items. Things are moving along.

Today I'm taking a friend to the library book sale and to the supermarket. I think I'll make some meat loaf and freeze some.

Hi everyone!

I'm super busy with school right now, so not a lot of time to get onto spark, but I just wanted to stop by and wish everyone a wonderful first day of October! Let's all make this month a great one!

Gail--It sounds like you are super busy, wow! Resting and reading today sounds like a lovely plan to recuperate a bit.

Good Evening:

I'm so exhausted I'm ready to drop. Travis, the guy who sells Vic's stuff on the net, came this morning and we worked for 3 hours. Then I went to the gym, bank and library. When I came home there were lots of messages so I returned all the calls. Believe it or not I'm arranging two trips, one for Dec. and another for June. It all takes time and patience.

Tomorrow I go for my flu shot and then I'm going to try to rest and read. My goal for October is to continue to do what I'm doing with the food and to slow down and not do so much in one day.

Sending you all hugs,

Gail

Hi everyone! It is nice to see some more people posting! Welcome back, we missed you! Autumn is a great time to refocus. As for me, I am little by little becoming more active on SP again, even (gulp) tracking my foods, which I told myself for a long time that I never wanted to do again. Well, it does help me and I need to use all my resources now so that I don't get completely back to my heaviest-ever weight.

I joined a class at UW Hospital which starts in mid-Oct, called DietFree 2. I took the DietFree class several years ago and some of the habits are hard for me to integrate (like, stopping eating when I am no longer hungry -- this is very hard for me!) I am hoping to get help in the follow-up class, as well as by being more active on SP. I can walk 10 or 20 minutes a day with my problem feet & knee and I am back doing the recumbent bike. Thanks for being there, dear Madison sparkers.

Gail, I am only getting a few little yellow tomatoes these days, but am still getting beans. I hope your big job of getting through all Vic's belongings will not take all your energy. Thinking of you. Sounds like your diet plan is going very well for you! Yay!

Good Morning:

It's been a while since I posted here. It was getting pretty discouraging when days and days went by and I was the only one posting.

Vic died a year ago and for the past year I've been disposing of his things. I work at it for a month or two and then I need to get away. On average, I send a truckload of books to the UW library once a month, a carload or van load of things three times a month to be sold on a local website, and a carload of stuff donated to the Hospice Thrift Shop about twice a month. Last month the library came twice because all the cartons of books wouldn't fit in one trip. Hospice sent 2 cars, 2 vans and a trailer one day. On days when these folks aren't scheduled to come I bring boxes of books over to the Frugal Muse to sell. In August it was almost daily. Finally, there is a professor from the UW who has been going through the boxes that are filled with my father-in-law's stuff. He died in the 1970s and my husband never tackled the 300 + boxes from his home. My father-in-law was with the Polish government in exile during WWII and there is a lot of archival material to be sorted. I'm donating that to an institute in NYC.

Over a month ago I heard a talk on a PBS fundraiser. J J Virgin spoke about her Virgin Diet. To make a long story short, I've cut almost all gluten from my diet and have been eating a LOT of berries and other anti inflammatory foods. The result is that I've lost weight without portion control, stopped all allergy medications, and stopped Ibuprofen for my arthritis. It's been truly remarkable. Basically, she says that we need carbs, oil, protein, etc. but the right kinds. I've been eating fruit, Quinoa, buckwheat kasha, and sweet potatoes for carbs and olive oil and nuts for oil. Also, I have cut back dramatically on deli. There is a big problem with all processed foods and stuff filled with chemicals. Those foods are inflammatory and slow down metabolism. Thankfully, I don't and never did have a sugar problem. On my last vacation my jeans and a blouse were so baggy I couldn't wear them. Now my bras are too big. I eat lots of good stuff and don't feel deprived. The best part of all of this is that I'm off those meds.

To relax I've been reading mysteries and recently discovered Baldacci. Any of you read his books?

Sending you all hugs,

Gail

Kathleen: Those tomatoes sound wonderful. I had to stop my vegetable garden after Vic became ill. Now I just get stuff at the store, but it's not the same.

I had to pick the purple tomatoes before they turned purple -- they are dark red. The squirrel or chipmunk population started feasting on them. There is one green one left. I put cayenne pepper on it as a discourager.

I love cucumber salad and zucchini anything. We didn't plant zucchini this year but got some big ones from Farmers Market for 50 cents each.

I am enjoying my week off. Tomorrow we are going out to dinner with my middle daughter, but her sister disagrees with her choice of place (Umami) so I don't know where we'll end up going.

We have been getting some zucchini and summer squash from one of our neighbors along with cucumbers, so we have been making lots of zucchini squash casserole, zucchini bread and lots of cucumber salad. My sister even made some zucchini-chocolate chip muffins, each regular sized muffin has 117 calories. They are delicious.

I can't wrap my head around a purple tomatoes. I guess I would need to see it to believe it! LOL

Hi everyone,
Still waiting for the purple tomatoes to really ripen, they are big, and I can't wait! I pickled some cucumbers and they turned out delicious. I went to Door County last weekend and had a wonderful time with some old friends. And today is my sister's 50th birthday party. I made a 5-bean salad from Zonya's cookbook so at least I will be contributing something healthy. My daughter made chocolate chip brownies (ummm...not so healthy there)

Have a fabulous and cool Labor Day everyone.

We have been harvesting some small to medium size red tomatoes. They are delicious! Our peppers are really dismal. After 5 yrs I think we are giving up on them! Boo Hoo!

Quiet around here. Are people posting in another thread?

Started getting tomatoes from garden. And apples from Farmers Market. I really like this time of year, food-wise. Somehow I managed, out of 4 tomato plants I planted, to choose none with red fruit. I have 3 yellows and one purple. ??? I don't know what I was thinking, or maybe I didn't read the tags carefully.

Have a good week everyone.

I'm back with my tail between my legs, and a small dog that demands I take long walks every day. So glad to see some old friends still here. My mother still lives with us and is now 95. My hubby just retired and has a garden full of cucumbers for me to eat. Good time to get back on track.

Well, I've gone gluten free since Monday and today I gave away all my bread that was in the freezer and all the wheat products in my pantry. I've been eating lots of fruit, salads, meat, poultry and groats or quinoa. Very good. Think I may make hummus this weekend. I don't know if there is any relationship between going gluten free and my health but I've noticed some changes over the week: 1. I had horrible heartburn but it seems to have abated markedly. 2. My arthritis isn't bothering me so much. One day at a time, right?

Hugs for all,

Gail

Good luck going gluten free Gail. It has been suggested to me to do that, but I have never been able to give up wheat products.

I had a nice anniversary trip. We went to Mineral Point. My kids did not wreck the house or anything, I was very proud of them. We stayed in a lodge in the middle of nowhere and enjoyed quiet and being away from the usual scene.

Have a good Friday everyone. Weekend is very close behind.

Good Morning:

PBS had a piece on the Virgin diet a while back and I recorded it. Just last Friday I listened to it. Think I'm going to try to eliminate gluten from my diet for a week and see what happens.

Tree service is coming today to trim my trees and remove two bushes that died last winter. Also, the UW professor is coming this afternoon to sort books destined for the UW and archival materials for an institute in NYC. I'll be so glad when this nightmare is over.

Wishing you all a good day.

I love it! I wore a light jacket for the walk portion of my exercise, but capris and a very light short-sleeved t shirt were fine once I started running. It's cold in my house, but I always prefer that to hot. My DH is wearing a fleece with the hood up...

I've been out this morning for my run already. Weird morning. It's not warm out, but too warm to run with a jacket on. If I'd gone out in only my tank top, I might still be running!

Happy Anniversary! Yes it is a bit chilly! I went up to north central WI and stopped in at the Outagamie county fair and I thought I should have brought a winter coat! Along with the appropriate gear! Burrrrr Cold!

Happy anniversary.

We went to the farmer's market this morning after boxing class and a quick run.

It was chilly! So weird to think of this weather in July.

Hi everyone, how is your weekend going?

I love this cool weather, but it's kind of odd. We are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this weekend (it's actually Tuesday - the 30th). I think we will look at wedding pictures on the laptop. When we were married there was no such thing as a personal computer...

Take care everyone, hope you are enjoying what you are doing today.

Deb, Hi! I remember you from before. Welcome back! I think water aerobics is fun too. I have only ever taken it at a gym. The UW Natatorium may be a resource. Not sure what the costs or requirements would be. Otherwise like Jet mentioned, MSCR runs a lot of pool classes, or used to. I wonder if some of the outdoor pools would have water aerobics classes?

Gail, heat is good, as long as the air conditioning is turned up! On my shoulder where it's more a joint thing, I sometimes use ice too. Good luck with the gradual process of cleaning things out. I'm glad you have people helping you. I was out looking at my tomatoes today, of which there is one ripe one, and not only was the telephone ringing, but it started raining hard. So I left the tomato for tomorrow.

Have a good night everyone.

Lots of changes for you!
Years ago I took water aerobics through Madison School Community Rec (MSCR) at West High School. The only reason I stopped was because I am a non-swimmer, and the new instructor had people swimming the width of the pool. She told me I could just run in place. Since the class description specifically said swimming was not involved, i was totally bummed and stopped going. Everyone else could swim, so I didn't want to complain.
Anyway, I am sure MSCR still offers those classes. There may be a residency requirement.
Gail, I cannot believe you are still clearing things out. You must be tired of it!

Hi team,

I was active here a couple of years ago then dropped off the face of the earth. Got a divorce, bought a house, fell in love. And of course I ignored my eating and did not exercise during all of it.

Question for you: does anyone know where I can go do water aerobics without paying an arm and a leg? Outdoors is fine during the summer, especially in this heat. I will need an option for cold weather, too.

I live in Fitchburg but would consider driving outside of Madison for the right price.

I don't want to rejoin a gym. I enjoyed water aerobics in college. I think I would enjoy it again.

Have a good evening,

Deb

Get it done.

Good evening

Well, the ladies from the hospice thrift shop left a little while ago. We worked for about 3 hours and they left with a carload of things including vintage collectible, vintage clothing about 100 new coffee table books, electronic kitchen items and other miscellaneous things. The total donations came to over $2500, in large part due to the coffee table books that the thrift shop sells for $25-$30 each. Tomorrow my son-in-law will come to help me, and on Friday, Travis will come to collect things for the next auction. I can see the progress little by little. At this rate I just might have the work done in another year.

With the heat today, thank God for AC.

Take care, stay cool, and be sure not to get dehydrated.

Gail

Kathleen: Know you probably don't want to hear it on a day like today, but heat should help.

Thanks Susie! My neck is gradually feeling better after I got a massage on Saturday. Now it is my shoulder -- an old problem area. Always something huh!

I just have to keep moving and not overdo anything. When my neck was stiff, I was trying to stretch a lot, and may have aggravated the shoulder that way.

Some brown beetles are eating my pea leaves. I hope they leave the tomatoes alone!

Has anyone heard of Montmorency cherry juice as an anti-inflammatory type aid? My piano teacher swears by it and I am thinking of trying it, since I can't take NSAIDs.

Have a good day everyone.

Good for you with the garden! I have been away since May 15th so my sister Thoms1 had to plant the garden this year. We live in Prairie Du Sac so I don't know how our garden is coming along. Sigh!

I hope your neck feels better. If you can, think about getting at the very least a chair massage for that problem.

I have reached a happy day. My first tomatoes from my own garden were ripe enough to pick. Just the golden cherry variety, others are a ways off. They were delicious! And it looks like there are lots of them on the vines. Our peas were a success too, and we have gotten a few strawberries.

I am struggling with very sore/tight neck muscles on the right side. Last week was difficult. It must be tension from work. I am trying to move around more and not stay glued to the computer. Hope everyone is having a good evening.

I think you did! I remember looking directly at a woman and thinking she looked familiar, but I didn't greet her because you didn't register fully in my head. Darn! We bought chicken, bread, cheese, beets, peas, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, kohlrabi and that may be it. No strawberries cause we went and picked on Thursday. Now I have to make some strawberry jam. At least I shouldn't get too hot doing that today...
We frequently go about that time - I will try to pay better attention next week!

Jet -- did I see you and DH at the rainy Hill Farms farmers' market this a.m. about 8:15? I thought it was you, but missed the opportunity to say hi! Plus, my DH was lugging a heavy hanging basket so I didn't want to make him wait. We got a hanging basket of petunias for $15, it was on sale, and it is getting a nice rainy drink right now in my backyard.

Also got strawberries, yellow cherry tomatoes, and a few baked goods for breakfast! I didn't get any snap peas, although they looked good and abundant, because our own garden peas are coming in full strength! Our first year with the raised bed, we are so excited by every little development in vegetable culture.

Have a good morning everyone.

Good Morning:

I hope to get to the gym and, if the spirit moves me, get some things off to the hospice thrift store and Half Price Books. Other than that I'll either watch some TV movies/programs I recorded or read.

Wishing you all a good Sunday.

HOORAY! I'm finally back in Madison! I hope I never again have to drive across the country! ;-)

And I must say that Madison is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL place on earth! I literally cried when we finally got to the border of Wisconsin last night. I don't think I've EVER seen anything that made me as happy as the sight of the Wisconsin-shaped sign at the border of Iowa and Wisconsin. :-D

I might never leave this state again! :-o

I'm "sort of" here still. Hopefully I'll be able to be more actively online soon.

My father (who lived in California) died in May, and after I took care of his possessions and got his home ready to sell, I began driving his car back to Madison. I'm en route now - I just stopped in Colorado at a motel for the night. I can't wait to get back home - I've been gone since April and I'm homesick!

I am still here. I will try to check in each day. I underwent excess skin removal surgery in March and am doing very well. I finally got back to exercise and weight training. Unfortunately I am leaving to visit my sister in Montana this week so won't be around for another two months. I am hoping to keep up my cardio and strength training while I am gone!

I heard it was suppose to rain on and off today. I hope they are wrong as I have been dealing with a foundation issue with the mass amount of water from snow and all the rain.

Me too.
I thought it would be interesting to incorporate some goals for the team to get going again, using the www.superbetter.com website. There is a iPod app available if you want to keep track of your goals. It would be nice to have local "allies".
