Good for you! I am so thoroughly tired of dripping sweat that I could not make myself do anything more strenuous than stroll the westside farmers market.

Just an FYI. I read recently that when we are stressed our body produces a hormone that results in promoting belly fat. When I was on respite I ate a lot but was not stressed. Not only did I not gain weight, I lost. Something to keep in mind.

I am just about done with making any extra effort in this weather. I'm still biking to and from work, and going to zumba on Thursday, but I have not run on Tuesday or Sunday in a week or so. I need some incentive....like a snowstorm!!
I need to get where you are, Madeline1980, when it comes to food.

I totally understand! I gained between 20 and 25 pounds in the last year. I got up to my highest weight yet! Since re-starting my efforts yet again about a month ago, I've lost 5 pounds though, and I'm super pleased with myself. This is the first time that I've actually lost weight a healthy way. In the past, I've only been able to lose weight at times when I was so stressed and anxious I couldn't eat! Now, I'm losing weight, because I'm practicing a little self-discipline and not binging at night anymore. Also, fitting in a little exercise here and there. I know that I'll need to amp that up if I want to keep losing.

Hi, just stopping by, hope everyone has been having a great weekend! Mine is quiet, lots of knitting, which is what I like. We saw the dietitian last Tuesday and have lots to read, about emotional eating and the psychological underpinnings of weight problems. Very interesting stuff.

Not sure if I should go out and water or not -- we did get a short shower this morning.

Good Morning:

Had a great day yesterday. The volunteer from hospice came at one. I ran a couple of errands at a leisurely pace and then sat in the library for about an hour and read. I'm still into the Anne Perry books. Right now I'm at least half way through the Monk series. Today would like to find the energy to bake a couple of 7" pies: one for Vic and another for a neighbor. I'm thinking of lemon meringue. I'm not into sweets so it shouldn't be a temptation for me.

I just got off the scale and was amazed; I didn't gain any weight on my 5 days respite. I really didn't expect that since I had a huge breakfast every morning and a good dinner at night.

It's sunny again but somewhat cooler. Hope you all have a lovely day.

Headed down to the Reddan soccer park in Verona to greet the Michigan solar car, which is currently participating in, and dominating the American Solar Challenge. The road down there is under construction, and the kids had to carry the vehicle for about a hundred yards, because apparently, solar cars and gravel roads don't mix well.

I have a peony that I planted this year. I don't think it's going to make it despite the rain. :( I've been watering it, but it keeps looking worse and worse.

Good Morning:

IT'S RAINING! The sound of the rain is like music to my ears. I'm in for a long day with Vic at the hospital, but I'm rested and will take things in stride. Will write more as soon as I catch up or get a breather.

It's 7/18 now, and I'm reminded of the same date, a bunch of years ago. Wrecked my knee playing basketball back in the year 2000 (cue the Conan O Brien skit!), and got the ACL fixed that summer. Robbed me of two summers, really, since I wasn't full strength in 2001, either. But that surgery took place on the 18th of July, 2000. Cleaning up, I found a notebook in which I'd started to record thoughts after the surgery, including details like spending the second day afterwards doped up on Vicodin and watching all three of the Back to the Future movies back to back to back.

Unfortunately that journaling effort didn't last very long. Wish I'd kept it up, as I'd love to be able to revisit more of what I was thinking in the aftermath of what is, to date, my only major surgery.

So how's this for mixed blessings? Apparently, I "fit" into a pair of suit pants I haven't in a few years. the quotation marks are there for a reason, as with a little bit of breath holding, I can hook the clasp in the proper slot, which wasn't the case the last time I tried to try these on. And once they're on, it doesn't feel like the hook is going to rip out, either. It's a nice little NSV, insofar as these pants are tailored to me circa 2002, when I think I was around 160 lbs, and depending on how far into the trip to India we were when my brother and I went to the tailor shop, perhaps lighter.

(as an aside, suits/glasses/ certain other goods are, comparatively far cheaper in India, got two pairs of glasses for the price of a eye exam from a back alley optometrist in Calcutta on that trip, and two custom tailored suits for off the rack ($US) prices, too. Of course, it might cost you $1500 to get over there, so, maybe if you're in the neighborhood... :)

But then there's the flipside, where, even though I "fit" and I could breathe, and everything while wearing them, I've got fat rolls spilling out in every direction, with the gut lapping far over the waist. Totally a "ooh! ooh! oh..." kind of moment.

Bottom line, I wish I'd taken real measurements when I started this trip. I'm guessing that my waistline might be a bit smaller than when I started, and the circumference of my belly might be immune to the weight loss. Might have to hit Target tomorrow, and find a soft tape measure, and start keeping track of a few more numbers.

One step back, two steps forward, as long as you keep doing that, you'll come out ahead in the end.

I mean, we're all going to have bad days, trick is not to string them together. And if a good day happens to come along, see if you can't replicate the magic.

I'm spouting platitudes, I know, and they can be too saccharine, and annoying sometimes, but there's a nugget of truth in 'em, and they're good to recall from time to time. So you're up a few, Kathleen...so what? As Otter and Emily have pointed out, you're cognizant of it and doing something about it. Baby steps, first steps, what have you, start moving them in the right direction, and soon you're taking Giant Steps, and looking for some Coltrane to act as a soundtrack.

So here's the soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30FTr6G53VU

And here's to us all getting there.

Thanks for being there, teammates, I appreciate your suggestions and empathy. Today has gone well so far, I had a good healthy home-made lunch, I ate breakfast, I am not too far off track for this particular day. Just need to get a streak of good days going. I like the idea of not working on too many things at one time. That makes sense. Otherwise I get overwhelmed. Thanks again to Jet, Emily and Otter.

I feel you, Kathleen. I've probably lost 100 pounds in the last two years. The bad news is that I have also gained those same 100 pounds. The win is that I started really working on this at about 250 lbs and now I am 'maintaining' a 10 lb swing of 217. I don't like maintaining here, I need to be like 80 lbs less.

You are on the right track, Kathleen. I know you are upset, but please, cut yourself some slack. emoticon

KNAUGHT-the GOOD news is you're here and recognize the need for change! Way to go in that regard.

I would pick one thing to focus on, I always end up feeling like a failure when I attempt to change too many things at once. Maybe this week you focus on healthy lunch choices, and next week, you begin to adjust dinner portions, etc.

Slow and steady, you can do it!!

OK bad news. I have gained 27 pounds since last year. Aaargh! But, at least it motivates me to do something, which the first 26 pounds did not, apparently. I am seeing a dietitian with my husband a week from today. I am starting to think about portion sizes. I think that is a killer for me. I really do have to measure and be structured. Also, it's so discouraging to try to exercise when it is hot, but maybe this week, I could walk in the morning. Also, I am going to take a lunch and not eat cafeteria food at work.

Reading what everyone did over the weekend (a lot of relaxing, being lazy, etc) makes me feel good about my lazy relaxing weekend!! I went camping, went to a concert, had a family get together, etc. Given the circumstances, I feel pretty good about some smart choices I made, but I REALLY needed that relaxation!
Hopefully it stays cool enough this week so we all can get outside a little bit.

Went to brunch out at the Nauti-gal out on the north side, spent the afternoon playing ultimate at Reynolds, and then came home, and utterly crashed. Woke up from the nap and now watching Harry Potter movies on ABC family, although I'm wondering why I'm bother with the commercials (no DVR) since I actually own the DVDs. I suppose it does allow for mucking around on the internet in the meantime. Today's been a good day.

I was much lazier today than yesterday. I cleaned the kitchen and did some laundry, but otherwise, walked the dog and watered the lawn and that's about it.

My husband resurfaced the driveway today. Between that and me mulching the front flower beds yesterday, our front yard has a lot more curb appeal. I'm inspired to put more effort into it and really make a difference now.

I hate that our car has to be parked in the street all night. A neighbor had her car crashed into over night. Like really crashed into. The car that hit her was absolutely totaled.

I sort of ran this morning. I was really hoping it would be a little cooler. Since it was not I just wasn't having much fun. I ran a little less than 30 minutes and walked 50. I did see two great blue heron along Wingea Creek. Otherwise I cleaned house, took a nap, did some reading. Eventually I will cook supper. Pretty lazy day, really.

I read an Anne Perry book yesterday and am starting another today. I finished the series of Joseph and Matthew Reavly and now am working my way through the Monk series. My next book will be CAIN HIS BROTHER.

BTW I'm posting a lot on freecycle these days and am currently offering large plastic containers with lids. I got the very big ones when I hosted a party for 24 a couple of years ago.

There is a nice breeze out there, but I still got drenched in sweat just hanging out my wash!

It's supposed to be a lot cooler today, just up to the high 80's. Stay cool and hydrated.

Blast from the past... I hope at least a few people remember me... I dropped off the face of Spark around this time last year, but I've felt compelled to return lately. Hope all is well with everyone!!

This heat is gosh darn ridiculous! But it makes us be creative with our workouts!!

Down 3 lbs!! emoticon Even in this heat, I'm still trying to stay active. Yesterday, I waited until 9:30 at night before I went for a light run...

I didn't eat the best yesterday. I ate about double my calories but I did swim for no joke 4 hours yesterday.

It was lovely.

After slipping up on my healthy eating plan last night, today, I will have more will power and make healthier choices. Planning on staying inside where it's cool, and then maybe yard games later this evening. Enjoy the holiday!

Our plan for the day involves a healthy lunch and then going over to a friends for swimming and for a cookout.

Looking forward to spending the day in the water!

Kathleen: So good to see you back. It's great that your husband will do this with you. I've got me trying to lose weight and Vic trying to gain. One problem I have is that his tastes change daily and I'm stuck with his high calorie food. There's just so much I'm willing to throw out. He's still big on ice cream, heavy cream, pie and candy. Thankfully, those do nothing for me. Stay cool.

I took the dog for a very short walk last night, about one mile. We stopped twice so I could give him water, but I still felt very guilty about walking him in that heat. It's icky and getting worse.

Hello everyone, it's been a while, but I am going to try again to pay attention to my weight and fitness. I would like to do yoga again, do my physical therapy, and move without knee pain. I would also like to start losing weight again after a long, slow gain of about 25 lb since last fall. My husband is going with me to a dietitian and we are both going to start with a more structured eating plan. I think if we both do it, we can support each other. My daughter (21, who lives at home) made sure she did NOT have to participate too! But maybe having healthier foods around the house will help her too.

I took a 20 minute walk tonight after supper -- WHEW! Still pretty hot out there.

I was going to go to the gym, but didn't make it, and then got drafted to play frisbee. See if my leg holds up. I shouldn't have looked at the weather, for some reason I was under the impression that it was supposed to be a high of 91 today. Better toss those water bottles in the fridge.

It is nasty out there! I rode my bike so slowly coming home I thought I might tip over. I'm exaggerating, but I did take it very easy!

Celebrating the 4th by going to see some...ummm...British dudes. Iron Maiden at summerfest. Alice Cooper is opening, so there's an American angle to the show. Kind of curious whether Bruce Dickinson might address Independence Day in any way, as Maiden are a historically literate band, what with songs about Alexander the Great, Crimean War battles, World War I epics, etc in their catalogue. Nothing about the American Revolution in their catalog, though.

Welcome Otter! Yoga by the lake sounds lovely. I used to see someone doing Tai Chi in Vilas Park on my way to work in the morning. Somehow just seeing that made my day better too.

Woke up and did some yoga at the lake this morning-I'm sure the boaters all thought I was nuts, but it felt SO GOOD to stretch out all my muscles! Stay cool everyone!

Yes thank you Gail! Very much appreciated. How's everyone celebrating the 4th? We had a family party yesterday and went boating. We watched the Fireworks on the lake...great evening...

Thanks for starting the thread Gail.
It's hard to make ourselves do anything when the weather is so hot, or at least it is for me. If I didn't bike to work I would get a lot less exercise. I just walked this morning, and still came home soaked. Oh well, it certainly could be worse.

Good Morning:

Happy July 1 everybody. It's the start of a new month and my one and only goal is to do more PT exercises. The one I've been doing is great and I've been consistent. But I need to do more stretches and/or the pulley to improve my range of motion and thereby take better care of myself.
