Good Morning:

Well, yesterday was a rough day in more ways than one. I dropped Vic off at the hospital for his chemo and went to have my hair colored. Our sil brought him home. As soon as I got home Vic told me they gave him an x-ray because of his cough and he had to go back to the hospital to see the hematologist. So, back to the hospital we went. It turns out he has a fungal pneumonia. They needed prior authorization for his medication. I learned later a month's supply is $3,200. The doctor gave us one dose from their supply and, since they expedited the authorization request, hoped we would hear in 24 hours. We drove back towards home and stopped at McDonalds since Vic hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast. While waiting for our order they called on our emergency cell phone and said the authorization came through, and so back to the hospital we went. The insurance covered the drugs 100% so we had no out of pocket costs. Still, I was totally wiped out by the time we got home. He was still coughing (it takes a while before the medication does its thing) and he looked so frail and gaunt that it's scaring me a lot. He's confident he will get better. (See my last blog.)

Today I'm going to prepare several dishes for him. It will be a while before I get everything done because each vegetable has to be washed thoroughly in soapy water, rinsed and then diced into small bits, but I'm happy to do it. He needs to gain weight since he lost another pound last week and is now down to 157. Not good.

Sorry for going on and on. Just writing things down seems to help.

Enjoy the day and Happy New Year to all. Hope 2012 brings us all good health, prosperity and lots and lots of laughs.

Gail

I'm keeping you and Vic in my prayers hun.

I had a nice Christmas. My sis in law got me the Spark People Cook Book. It has lots of great ideas. Different ideas that I can try. When life gets busy we just have the same old thing. So I'm hoping to change things up a bit in the kitchen.

I tried a new shimmery lotion on my shoulders and upper chest area Christmas Eve and found out I'm allergic to the shimmer :{ It's going away quickly and not too itchy but I'm staying out of the pool today. But no excuses to skip the workout. My parents in law got me Zumba for Wii so I'll be doing that and also do a yoga routine from my new Yoga class App I gifted myself on my ipad.

Have a great day!

Janey, Don and I usually spend Eve at home. Don't like to go out with potential drunk or buzzed drivers around. We will probably watch a movie and I may try a Spark supper from my cook book.

hopefully the loss of appetite is just side effect of the chemo and he will be getting his appetite back over the coming days.

Good Morning:

Vic was borderline yesterday. Usually, when he is borderline he forgoes a transfusion, but yesterday he had one. He arrived at the hospital at 8am. The blood bank was very slow and long story short we didn't get home till about 4:20pm. That's almost 8 1/2 hours. It was a long day.

My greatest concern now is that his appetite is awful and he is eating little and losing weight. I wonder if this is the beginning of the end or a temporary dip. I do what I can and I can do no more. Nothing else to be said.

We don't have plans for New Years. Usually, we like to stay home because it is mostly very cold and there are lots of drunk drivers.

Hope you all enjoy this day and every day. Remember, yesterday is gone, tomorrow hasn't come but today is the present...a real gift.

Good Morning:

I dropped Vic off for his chemo and blood test this morning and went for my annual mammo and a vitamin D blood test...both routine stuff. I'm at home now waiting to hear if he needs blood; he probably will. Thankfully, his mood is better than it has been in weeks. WOO HOO!

Wishing you all happy days,

Good Morning:

Vic didn't feel well enough to go to Christmas dinner at a friend's last night so I went by myself. When I got home he was feeling a bit better and watching the Packers, and, since they won, he was a happy camper.

Just three more days of chemo and he's done for this go-round...thankfully.

Enjoy this lovely sunny day,

Gail

It is so hard to be healthy this time of year. I am not having much Christmas spirit this year I guess. Just kind of surviving. We are having people over for oyster chowder and citrus salad tomorrow night, and then going for a brunch/dinner at my sister's on Sunday. I might stay home or leave early. Luckily I will have help with the cooking tomorrow and will get to spend time with my middle daughter.

Wishing happy holidays to everyone. I'm glad the days will be getting longer.

I have an ambitious plan for the day. Get my house cleaned, get my niece's hat finished (done!) finish up some grocery shopping, start knitting a cowl for my sister and get groceries for our Christmas Eve dinner. (I am also getting myself some wine because I am indulging this holiday :)

Good Morning:

Well, it's going to be a busy week. I've one more Christmas gift to get for a friend and I'm hoping to take care of that today. Vic has his weekly blood test tomorrow and I've an allergy clinic follow-up on Wednesday. Friday I'll undertake the mammoth task of making potato pancakes (latkas), enough for an army. Latkas are the traditional food for Channukah and my family goes through them like crazy. Last year I made a double batch and it was ok, but if I had made a triple batch it would have been better. The pancakes are fried in oil so it really messes up the stove. Oh, well, it's once a year. As for everything else for Friday's dinner, I'm getting two rotisserie chickens, making matzo ball soup, and will probably get some asparagus to roast in the oven. Dessert will be store bought. It doesn't sound like much, but believe me, those latkas are a job.

As for the Saturday and Sunday Christmas celebrations, well, I'll just bring store-bought stuff unless I get some energy to make something during the week. I won't push it.

Has everyone finished all their Christmas shopping? Just wanted you to know that Harry and David has free shipping with no minimum purchase this holiday season. Their prices are dreadfully expensive, but their pears are exquisite. We sent a box of 6 to a friend here in town, and yesterday I sent a box of 9 to my son and dil. The savings in shipping costs are a lot.

Wishing you all a week of happiness. Don't get too bogged down with frantic last minute efforts.

I have a talent for putting a little extra pressure on myself just for fun, I guess. I decided to make a lap quilt (decision was made Friday) for a friend who is retiring. I still have to finish one for one of my kids, along with all my holiday baking, and working part-time, and the usual holiday get-togethers. On the plus side, I can't snack while I'm sewing!

Good Morning:

With the bit of snow the night before last, I was out there with a shovel yesterday morning. To my amazement, nothing hurt afterward and my sinuses didn't act up. WOO HOO! I'm taking Vic's advice and popping a Zyrtec every day whether I think I need it or not.

Hope you are all hanging in there, staying well and not getting overwhelmed by the extra tasks of the season.

Hello everyone, it's finally weekend at last. This last week seemed long. Hope all of you have a pleasant and relaxing weekend.

We have a few errands, not many. We are ahead of where we usually are as far as prep for the holidays, so that is good. I started tracking again, but then today we had pizza hut Big Dinner Box and it was pretty outlandish how many calories are in that.

Thanks for the tip. This is my first bus ride with Mega bus. I've used Van Galder and Greyhound and both tend to be a little chilly.

My daughter-in-law reports Lily is non stop singing Santa Claus is coming to town. She just forgets the naughty or nice parts.

Khatlady, if you haven't taken that bus before my kids mentioned that it's really warm on the bus the two times they've taken it. Christmas is best spent with children and/or those good friends we don't get to see as often as we might like. How fun to have that five year old in your life!
I hope both of you (Ahtrap too) have safe travels and lots of fun. And I gotta say, as the mom of adult "boys" that at your birth we moms VOWED to feed you endlessly! I'm kidding of course, but I know that all my baking and fussing next week will be for my boys. It's just what we do. Even if you don't eat it all, just let her know that you know she's doing it 'cause she loves you.
End of sermon.

Woo! Reached a goal...the same goal I reached right before Thanksgiving...and now I'm reaching it right before heading home for Christmas, where I'll be assaulted by my Mom trying to feed me more and more and more, when I'm not out catching up with friends over a beer and/or a burger, or a little item called "Ultimate Cheese Bread", which, amazingly kind of does live up to its name. Hmmm....I think I'll just go with the strategy from before, keep the same goal in place, and make sure it's Ding dong the wicked witch is DEAD before re-setting the numbers.

And in the meantime, ~10 hours of work (rest of today and half day tomorrow) before getting to see one of my favorite bands (Fair to Midland) twice, once in Milwaukee and once in Flint, MI. Looking forward to it, but definitely not looking forward to the 8-10 hours of driving it'll take to get to reach a final destination after Saturday's show.

All of my shopping is done, and the box of presents is ready to go to the post office and then to Minneapolis. Put a big note on the box, do not open.

I'm taking the mega bus for Christmas and just want to take the bare necessities with me.

Between my job at the University and my second job, that doesn't leave much time to do the Christmas stuff. Finals go up to the 23rd so with closing out the classes, we are busy to the last minute. The store is pretty busy to.

But Christmas in Minneapolis is wonderful. A five-year-old who will be so excited is just delightful to be around.

I am making headway on the holiday preparations. Yesterday I spent all day cleaning, putting up Christmas decorations, washing Christmas dishes and linens. I really have kind of a ridiculous amount of Christmas stuff. I guess this is what I do instead of rearranging the furniture the rest of the year!
Still have to get out cards, wrap gifts, and bake. oh yeah, and put up the tree. Three retirement parties today. Hopefully I will eat moderately.

Good Morning:

Yesterday I got the generic of Zyrtec, and though it's expensive it's worth every penny. It's far more effective than the other antihistamines I've tried.

Vic has had major dental problems over the past couple of months and I suspect it's a combination of genetics and the chemo. Today he's going to have his lower front teeth bonded. He's lost 7 lbs over the past couple of weeks because he's been afraid to eat. Yesterday I bought him whole milk and yogurt made with whole milk. He's thin to begin with and when he loses weight it shows in his face immediately, so he looks very gaunt.

Hope you are all doing well and are enjoying the season.

I went for a little run and now must really get to finishing the lap quilts I am making for the kids. We will drag the Christmas stuff out of the attic today, and maybe I'll get a start on cards. Seems like it's about time.
My siblings and I exchange small gifts. We are such a small family, just three, and with our parents gone, it just feels better somehow. My husband is the oldest of nine. We used to do a name exchange, but we don't live near any of them, so at least for us, that has ended. We still send his folks something, although the past few years we have asked them and our kids to simply make a donation to somewhere in our name, and they have asked us to do the same.

We went to the mall yesterday. It was madness! We still haven't started shopping for Christmas. We are both taking 12/19 off to shop our hearts out while my son is at daycare.

He will get home from school and there will be tons of presents under the tree. He will be soooo excited.

I think on campus there is an office that will put people together, especially foreign students.

Also, staff on their own kind of keep an eye on the student workers and make sure they are going home or have a place to go. More than one has opened their homes.

From my own experience, Christmas giving has gone through several different cycles. When I used to get together with my sister and her family, everyone got a gift. We filled out list of size color and what you wanted. But starting with teen years, all the kids wanted was money. My sister did not react well to suggestion of cutting the gifts or drawing names, but after a couple years, she saw the need.

Now we have split up even more as we are grandmothers and go to our children's homes for Christmas. We don't exchange gifts any more.

With my son and his family I kind of insist that the money for gifts go to my granddaughter and his wife. I am in the paring down stage of life, so an Amazon gift car, Starbucks coffee or a picture that my granddaughter drew are blessings enough.

It does get to be a bigger problem as my friend has an elderly mother who likes to see lots of gifts under the tree. Two of the brothers have lost their jobs and would be delighted to have gas gift cards or food gift cards. Instead as my friend says, they end up with a lot of useless cr@$#. Actually my friends then puts this con CraigsList so the guys get some money. Her mother will not change her mind,so she says this will go on until her mom passes away.

The pressures to spend are tremendous. Read an excellent article about separating Christmas from National Retail Shopping Day and it put a good perspective on the holiday.

Good Morning:

As you all know, we are Jewish so we celebrate Channukah, a very minor holiday, mostly an opportunity to give small gifts to children. I got some towels for my daughter and sil, and a candy bar and a $15 check for each grandchild. We will have a traditional meal with potato pancakes. (What a job; thankfully it's just once a year.) The only decoration is a menorah, a candelabrum with eight branches and a central one ...the server. We light the server candle, and with it light one other candle the first day, two other candles the second day, and so forth. That's it.

We do give gifts to my close friends and neighbors who celebrate Christmas. Also, our children and grandchildren celebrate Christmas so we give them gifts too. In the past I used to make Christmas baskets with home-made goodies for close friends and neighbors. I was not feeling well enough this year to do anything so I bought goodies and packaged them in Christmas gift bags. It saddens me to see so many people stressed out by the holidays, and feeling obligations to spend a lot of money. Our circle is small, so we never have to deal with that.

How do you all handle the stress? If people are alone for the holidays and don't want to be, is there some central office that puts a couple or individuals in touch with a family?

Wishing you all a happy, sunny day.

That's the tough part about coming to Madison for college and never leaving. You spend a lot of time saying goodbye to the people who do leave. Then again, most of them come back to visit, and there are always new people to meet. And if you stick around long enough, you know someone wherever you go.
We are volunteering at United Wisconsin, coming home to eat a little of our seeming endless pot of root veggie soup, then heading over to the Old Sugar Distillery to listen to a friend play music. Farmer's market and get a Christmas tree tomorrow.
Happy Hour for a Sad Occasion kind of sounds like a book title....

The evening's plans start with Happy Hour for a Sad Occasion (Part Deux), aka going to the Library, a bar on campus (where else?) to hang out with friends that will be leaving Madison for Charlottesville, VA next week. We did this last week, too, but there are people in town this week that weren't then, so back we go. Any excuse to spend time with friends before they run away, really.

I spend Christmas with my son and his family in Minneapolis. So several years ago I packed almost of of the Christmas things and gave it to them. I labeled all of the boxes as to what was what. Otherwise they would look at some and say why is she saving this junk not knowing that those were My grandmother's decorations.

Plus with all of the work for the semester ending and my second job, decorating had become such a chore and not fun at all. So now I put a wreath on the door and lights over the balcony window and call it done. The funniest part, I always get compliments on my decorating.

By the way, what does DH mean? Dear Husband?

Wait...is Christmas coming? I guess I'd better get started, huh? I am pretty much done with shopping, but after Thanksgiving being just my DH and I, it appears we are going to plenty of visitors for Christmas, including a son's friend with a 15 month old. Should be fun, and of course I needed to buy a few toys/books to have on hand. Yep, grandma-wannabee here.
But we have no tree, decorations, cookies, cards sent yet. All that, except the tree, will be brought down from the attic this weekend, and then we will get going. We don't decorate more than two weeks in advance anyway, but I should get some cards out....

Just stopping in to say hi to everyone. I am a little overwhelmed by holiday preparations and plans. Tomorrow is my daughter's birthday and after that, we will decorate and get the tree. I am on stay-cation right now but haven't gotten any shopping done, either in stores or online. I seem to have a mental block against it. I may just have to make a list and entrust it to DH.

Yesterday we went to Edo Japanese restaurant on Park St., then to the Chazen for the 20th century Japanese woodblock prints exhibit. Small exhibit but lovely.

This was a crazy recipe, and I think I'd be more inclined to call it root veggie stew, but the originator called it borscht. This had beets, leeks, carrots, cabbage, celery, tomato and potato!

Hmm, I wonder if that's what the borscht I made last night might need, a squeeze of lemon? Thanks for the idea!

Made a pot of turkey vegetable soup last night with some turkey parts I had left over from Thanksgiving. Boy, did that hit the spot. I've just two portions left. Just like chicken soup it made me feel better. By the way, I squeezed a fresh lemon into the soup for some added vitamin C. It tastes very good and I think it helped me battle this infection. Any of you ever try it?

Good Evening:

Yesterday afternoon and evening I started to feel worse again and was miserable before I went to bed. I'm beside myself with this sinus stuff. Can't wait for my next appointment with the allergist. It's unbelievable how cranky I am after months of this.

My food is better today. I made turkey broth with a drumstick and tail and added some fresh lemon juice, onion, garlic carrot and parsley. It tastes very good and is soothing...just as good as chicken soup.

Hope you're all in a good place.

What is up with me? I was exhausted when we got back from the hospital and Vic didn't even need a transfusion, so it was a "short" day.

Want to start a new book. I've been putting it off for days now.

Hope you are all doing better at your food than I. Today is OK but yesterday was still a bummer.

Wishing you all good times and many laughs,

Good Monday Morning:

Well, I slept till 5:30am today. WOO HOO. Today will be my first day off the medicine and I'm doing much better. Still on the sinus rinse and the nose drops. That medicine, as they warned, made me eat like crazy. Hopefully, today will be normal. I'm planning on making a home-made vegetarian split pea soup.

Wishing you all a happy Monday.

Trying to decide what flavor of useless lump I want to be today. Was on the edge of going to Milwaukee to night to see a CD release party at which friends are playing (at Shank Hall...seems like most of the people I know in Milwaukee are musicians). But looking at the rain forecase, I might just end up with plan b, Badgers game watching with friends, amorphous potluck style. Had dinner with some of them last night, and the discussion of what sort of food we'd do, IF we got together Saturday night, while in the middle of eating on Friday night, was just bizarre fun.

Of course, that leaves the rest of the day in which to putz around, and with absolutely no plans regardless of which avenue I choose this evening, putz I shall!

Good Morning:

Yes, it's just after 4:30am and I'm up. This medication I'm on for the sinus stuff, as they warned me, makes me a bit jumpy and gives me "SUPERWOMAN" energy. Two days ago I whipped up a couple of banana breads; yesterday it was pumpkin pie; today I think it will be home-made pasta sauce. No, I'm not into the sweets; I might have a sliver or I might not. Basically, I bake for others. As for the pasta sauce, I'm making up a huge gift bag for my wonderful neighbors and the "theme" is Italian goodies. I bought everything but the pasta sauce 'cause mine is the best. That's the only thing I'm missing to complete the gift. I just learned they are going away for Christmas, so I'm going to give it to them in the next day or two.

Hope you all enjoy the weekend. Any of you have a date with the TV to watch the Badger game?

Hey Jeannette: That was a typo; it was 10 am. LOL As for the dish towels, I figured what I actually paid (six dollars and change) was reasonable for two very high end towels. But I'm here to tell you I'd never pay the full price.

Vic drove himself to chemo in the Thursday morning. About noon I called him because he still wasn't back. He had be dragging since Wednesday, but refused to acknowledge it. Anyway, he was a bit dizzy and the nurses thought he might be a bit dehydrated so they gave him fluids. While they were at it they gave him a blood test and told him he needed a transfusion. A friend drove me to UW hospital so that I could be with him and drive him home. He left the house sometime a little after 8am and we didn't get home till about 4PM. It was another long day. Happily, yesterday was the 10th day of chemo, so now he's off for 18 days.

Wishing you all a happy Friday.

I got really nice dish towels for about $1.99 apiece last summer at Monroe St Festival. $8 is a lot of money for what, an eighth of a yard of cotton or linen? Yikes!

GoodEvening:

Well, I got up bright and early today to make banana bread. I got a bagful of bananas for 79 cents (total, not per pound) and though most were green, four were really ripe. Mmm, I thought, ....banana bread. I had just enough time this morning to make them for the nurses, and send Vic off to his last day of chemo in this go-round.

About 1am I raked leaves for a bit and then set out for the Mall. OMG-I couldn't believe the prices at The Boston Store. I wanted to get my daughter and sil some new dish towels. The nice ones were $8 each, and the one's that would look like rags after one wash were not much cheaper. I got them two and then went to check out Isotoner gloves. I was in shock to see they were on sale for $46 or so. Normal price is about $56. I made a bee line out of there. I'll check TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Hope you all have a good day and for those of you who have had a difficult year, I hope December ushers in a new beginning for better times.
