I like ratatouille and polenta from "Moosewood Cookbook". I also use a book called "The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet" which has astoundingly simple recipes (I like it that way!) I also like swiss cheese and scallion quiche (from another book, Vegetarian Epicure). My husband likes to use the site allrecipes.com.

We lost power last night for 2-1/2 hours. Our whole street was affected, not sure how much else of the neighborhood.

Having knee issues -- a drag. But I have been on the bike a fair amount.

I actually ended up going out for a walk in the wind. It was pretty crazy out there but we did enjoy the walk.

I am sorry Gail I don't have any vegetarian dishes that I've tried more than once. Ususally I will check SparkReceipes or do a google search to try to find something that looks good.

Have a great day!

Good Morning:

Well, I've been in a lot this week and am feeling better. So glad I didn't venture forth yesterday; it was very windy and you could see leaves and stuff blowing all about.

It's sunny and looks calm this morning so I want to get out there and pick stuff from my garden. I'll also pull a couple of plants to clear the ground. I've been picking green tomatoes a bowlful at a time and just letting them sit in to ripen. It works well. In the past I used to pick them all at once, wrap them each in newspaper and put them in a large carton in the basement to ripen slowly. Since I realized they will ripen sitting out too, that's what I'm doing now. If a lot ripen at once I'll just freeze them.

BTW, does anyone have some really good vegetarian dishes? I'm going to have family over next weekend and many eat mostly vegetarian food.

Enjoy the day.

Good Afternoon:

Boy, did we have a nice dinner last night. The staff at Quivey's Grove know us by now and did so much to make our evening special. In addition to setting out sliced apples and honey, they reserved "our table". The most touching thing was this: Though we all eat pork, we don't eat pork or pork products on holidays; nor do we mix milk products with meat products at those times. The chef prepared Vic's veal without the cream sauce, and he didn't use bacon in the warm coleslaw which we all had. I always enjoyed going there but after last night I'm a special enthusiast.

Boy, is it blowing out there again. I'm staying in and tending to my allergies. My most recent bout is under control and I'm giving it another day.

Hope you all are doing well today.

Gail

Good Morning:

This evening at sundown we will be celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. Many years ago we would have a big dinner at our house, but in the past several years we've gone out with the family. Since Vic became ill three years ago I have not had the strength to do a big shindig so we continue to go out. There is a very nice place nearby and they always provide us with a platter of sliced apples and a dish of honey. You are supposed to eat a slice of apple dipped in honey to signify the hope of a sweet year ahead. I think that's kind of nice. In any case, we are all very thankful for all that we have and are looking forward to the future.

Wishing you all a sweet year ahead.

Gail

Good Evening:

I had to take Vic in for his weekly blood test today and WOO HOO, he didn't need a transfusion. Not only that but his hemoglobin numbers were good and they got there all by themselves.

Vic is doing great but I'm doctoring myself with the Neti pot, Halls, allergy pills, nose spray and tea. I am miserable every time I go outside. My allergies and sinuses have been through hell the last several days. Hopefully I'll feel a whole lot better in an hour or two.

Wishing you all a great Spark evening.

Good Morning:

I hope you are all doing well. Vic and I were invited to our friend's church BBQ yesterday. This wonderful guy is a grill-master. We have never before been to a church breakfast, lunch or dinner so this was a first all the way around. The food was great, the people were very cordial and we had a very nice time.

Today I'm staying in. Do you see how windy it is out there? I'm not about to tempt fate with my allergies. I've got to take Vic to the UW hospital tomorrow. Vic goes in for his blood test, an oncology appointment and also starts another round of chemo. It's exactly 3 years since he was diagnosed and he's still here. What a miracle man! I just wish his white cells and neutrophil counts would come up. But his quality of life is very good...as long as he doesn't get an infection... and I am so happy for that.

Going to check on an apple tart in the oven. Thankfully, sweets are not my thing so I'm not tempted. Vic will eat the lot of it.

Enjoy the week.

Thanks Gail, we are doing OK, especially given her long life and the fact that she was ready to go. We should all be so lucky.

I'm glad there wasn't this rain yesterday for the Badger Game. My biggest projects today are: strength training, and cooking chickens for the church meal program. I heard the spark walk got rained out today, I'm sorry to hear about that. My knee is still sore but better than last week. I hope those of you who are walkers, will get another chance at a group walk soon.

Good Afternoon:

Well, I finished my last Martha Grimes mystery yesterday and it was very disturbing. It involved several murders including one about the torturous death of some children. I get no joy, no pleasure about reading of torturous murders in general (can't for the life of me watch CRIMINAL MINDS), and much prefer abstractions such as was found in the old Charlie Chan or Mr. Moto films of the 1930s. This was the first Grimes book that went this way. If another goes in that direction I don't think I'll complete it.

I went to the garden the other day and got some more tomatoes. Our community garden has an area where we bring our uprooted plants, weeds, etc. We are supposed to put our "extra" produce in a designated spot. This year I only saw something there once...a zucchini. What really disturbs me is that people will uproot their plants and just toss them in the "waste" area. We are talking about perfect produce. Why don't they bring it to the nearby food pantry, or leave it for other gardeners who can use more? I have gotten hot peppers, zucchini, and green tomatoes from there. The green tomatoes ripen in a couple of days if left on the counter...no problem. It's disturbing to that so much is thrown away. I guess people feel it's too much trouble to just put forth a bit more effort.

Nothing planned for today. I'll start a new book and might even try to start a sweater with some yarn a friend gave me.

Enjoy the day,

Gail

Hope the blood tests go well Gail. I am doing well. We are working on my dads house this fall to get it ready to sell in the spring and its going to be alot of work. He is now in a full time care facility which he loves....and fondly refers to it as the Club.

It's great to be back on my feet again and I am starting to be able to walk more. We are having another walk on Sunday if anyone is interested...

Have a great day!

Janey: You sound so happy. I'm delighted for you.
I'm so glad you had a great walk in the arboretum this past weekend. I've been close to home because I believe Vic is weaker than he lets on. Yesterday he did play the piano and it was a real treat.

Wishing everyone a good Monday.

SIs in law slept through the farmers market, but I still probably couldn't have made the market. We wandered over to the Monroe Street Festival, then to our younger son and girlfriend's house for lunch. Afterwards we went over to the Willy St Fair. It was a nice day!

i wanted to walk this AM but it was a little early for me. I finished my run at about 9- didn't allow enough time for me to come home, shower, get my family showered and head over.

Farmer's Market and indian food, instead.

Good morning:

My allergies are acting up. Anyone else have this problem? Not going to push myself today. The last few days I've been up to my ears picking and processing, so today I rest.

Sorry I can't join the walk today; my head is a bit stuffed and I thought it might be best to stay in.

Kathleen: So sorry to hear about your knee. All I can say is PT works; I'm a living example. You have to keep doing it so that it's a regular thing...like brushing your teeth.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Gail: I am working on an off-white baby blanket for a co-worker who is expecting, and a mitten for me out of alpaca, which is my first experiment in Scandinavian color knitting. Also a few socks in various states of completion. Congratulations on having your lab work turn out favorably. Mine did too :) (week before last).

Emily: Yes, I'm feeling that "where did summer go" feeling too. We have all our windows closed & down comforters out. Haven't turned the heat on yet though.

Brought in all the house plants and the few orchids I still have (my daughter reclaimed most and took them to her apartment). Now I have to get back on a watering schedule.

Alas, no walking for me for a while. My knee is giving me terrible pain after I walked about 8 blocks yesterday. I could hardly sleep. I am wondering if I should go back to the sports medicine MD that I saw before. I would have to admit that I have been a little lax on doing my physical therapy exercises!

Well, I never got out for a walk yesterday or today. I've been too busy in the garden, picking, pulling up plants whose time has passed, then going home and washing and processing veggies. It's a lot of work and I know I was "exercising" even breaking a good sweat.

I'm reading a new Martha Grimes mystery, Stargazey. All of her titles are names of pubs. Strange names some of them have.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Kathleen: What are you working on? I so do want to get busy making a sweater for my granddaughter but don't have the energy.

I had a blood test yesterday and my doc was very pleased with my numbers but thought my thyroid medication needed tweaking, so he's upping the dosage a bit. (Maybe that's why I get so tired.)

This cool weather makes for beautiful days and comfortable nights. Glad we are all enjoying it.

It's back to work for me after 9 days off. Hopefully it won't be too crazy. My daughter is volunteering in my office this afternoon so that'll cheer me up. But we are just getting our computer program upgrade, and many things will look/act different on our screens, so I am nervous about that.

Yesterday I went to my aerobic class then after lunch Don and I went to Kegonsa State Park and hiked for an hour. It was so nice out.

I had a one on one session with my trainer and he has lowered my calories, upped my cardio and told me to lose another 10lbs. :{ I trust him and I do realize I do still have some fat around the middle and upper body. I was having a hard time getting amped about another 10lbs but I am using the fact that my 25yr class reunion is next year to push me. Something about getting together with people, some of whom were not very nice as a teen, and say "Look at me now?" that get's me moving. LOL

Well, today I'm off to woodcarve. Have a great day!

I'm loving this cooler weather! And I love crossing guards. Now that school has started I have the most delightful crossing guard to get me across Monroe St on my morning run/walks. This morning he told me I needn't run across the street - the cars could wait and I need my teeth. This guy sure gets my day off to a good start!

Welcome to the team!
Did you move from another state? My niece and her boyfriend just moved to Spring Green (very close to Mazo) from out of state. He's working in Richland Center. So far they like it.

Hello all! I actually live in Mazomanie but work in Middleton. I am 35, married and have a 7 year old daughter. I have lived here for two years and don't know a lot of people yet. I am very excited to find SP and can't wait to stay on the motivation train that I am on right now. I can't wait to get to know all of you and maybe even meet you one day as well.

Good Morning:

I'm feeling much better but not quite off that cold. Sleeping all day yesterday helped a lot.

The 17th sounds good to me, but it will all depend on how Vic is doing. I'm a definite maybe.

Gail, I hope you are feeling better soon.
My sister-in-law will be here visiting so I cannot walk the 17th. But don't plan around me! The next three weekends are pretty crazy.

Hey kids! Sorry I've been busy. All good stuff though. :} Yeah Janey can walk again emoticon

How about next Saturday Sept 17 9:30 we meet at the Arboretum visitor center for a walk?

I went kayaking Tues on the Fox River with my sis inlaw. It was a beautiful day. We saw lots and lots of Sand Hill Cranes and blue herons and turtles! Sunday Don and I went to Elroy and biked the Omaha Trail. It is 25mi round trip and my backside was fine afterwards :}

Well, off to workout, up to mom and dads to check on their place and water plants while they vacation, get my nails done, visit with my neighbor and make Spark People's Ham and potato casserole then put my feet up and root on the Packers!
Have a great day!

Good Evening:

I have had a cold since last night and I'm doing my very best to nip it in the bud, especially since I don't want to be around Vic if I'm sick. This morning I was walking around the house with a mask.

I spent 8 hours yesterday with Vic's lab, chemo and transfusion, and my general annual physical. It was really a looooong day. I slept almost 12 hours last night and about 4 hours this afternoon. When I'm sick sleep is my best remedy.

Going to crawl back under the covers.

Gail

Kathleen: Hope your labs turn out well.

Mabear: I am sort of near Hilldale.

Janey: You are a fine team leader, this is a great team, and I'm looking forward to having a walk with people from this team as soon as it can be organized.

As for me...today my main accomplishment was getting labs done. Everything OK. But while I was at the hospital I ran into 5 people from my office, who were all wondering what I was doing there during my vacation.

I see this team as people I can chat with who live in the same place as I do, mostly. I enjoy the local chat, and the support and friendliness. From my perspective, your leadership style is fine. I am on other teams that are challenge-focused, and one can only do so many challenges!
I do miss the times we got together for walks or coffee, but any one of us could organize something like that.

Happy Tuesday.....I am on Day 3 of a eating well streak. I know its not much but its a start.

I also wanted to chat with you all about the Madison Team. Don't feel like doing a very good job as a team leader. So I am just wondering if you are ok with how things are going or if anyone would like to take a more active role with the running of the team. Frankly with all that is going on in my life, Im not feeling very creative as a team leader.

Any thoughts, comments, volunteers? I'd even step down but be an active participant if you someone has interest in officially running the team....

Hugs to you all!

Happy Labor Day! Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

I am generally not an impuse buyer....always have had to work too hard for any money I made...so basically I am pretty frugal when it come to purchases for me...now I have been known to splurge on my son and family members and friends....

Good Morning:

Are any of you impulse buyers? I'm VERY BAD in any food store. Well, yesterday I decided to make a list and stick to it. Also, I promised myself I will not buy any bread, rolls or meat until I use up what I have in the freezers. I have an idea that I'm nuts when it comes to food because I went through such hard times till I hit my mid thirties. That's a long time. It's important to remind myself that we are no longer living...quite literally... from hand to mouth. Got to stop that bad habit.

Thank you everyone for the support. I have used my Mother's passing to get back on track with taking care of myself. She didn't and we lost her to early because of that.

A little cooler weather but going to grill out today anyway. Have a great day everyone.

I lost both my parents in the same year, one in July and one in November, but it was 8 years ago now. It's true I still miss them, but not as much as that first awful year.

Luckily I still have my sisters. Yesterday was one sis' birthday and also my nephew's so there was a party. I was OK with food except for the brownies. Oooh Bad! Today is better.

Isn't it crazy how much it cooled off last night. Now I'm in long pants and a sweater. Yesterday, sleeveless and shorts. Have a terrific Labor Day everyone.

Good Morning:

I have no plans for this Labor Day weekend, except to pick some stuff at the garden and read a book. That being said, I'd like to see if I can get in a walk. I live exactly one mile from West Towne and I'm thinking a walk there back and forth might be a good idea.

So sorry for your sil and her family. It must be so hard. My mom and dad died in different years but just a day apart.

Gail, what was the last play that you didn't like? We recently saw The Cure at Troy and thought it was fantastic.
We are heading to Kenosha for my sister-in-law's mother's funeral. Her dad died almost exactly a year ago. It's been a tough year for them.

Kathleen: Your staycation sounds wonderful. Do you just plan to veg or are you up to special things?

What about the rest of you? I'm at home this weekend and have something going on from Tuesday through Friday...mostly medical appointments for Vic and checkup for me. On Friday afternoon we are going to APT. Hope this play is far better than the last.

Gail, blessings on you and your memories of your father. Today is also my sister's birthday, my nephew's, and my boss'. I spent a lovely evening with friends last night, high school era friends who live in town, remembering one of our number who died recently. I did pass on getting a complete second helping of dinner, but I had 2 pc of pizza AND mango sorbet. I feel good about my choices though.

Today, if it ever stops raining, a picnic with my sister and nephew. I have confidence that it will!

Also, today starts my Staycation!!! I'm off til the 12th.

Good Morning:

Today is my dad's birthday, so for me it is a day of remembrance. He died many years ago and to this day he is as alive for me as he ever was. Is that strange? As is our custom, I lit a candle in his memory.

I'm trying to commit myself to a single goal for the month but I can't do it. What is wrong with me? Have any of you ever felt like this?
