Good Morning:

Vic's taking himself to chemo today so I'm going to get some stuff done. I already made my home made pasta sauce. Think I'll go to the garden and pick and may stop at the library if they get in the book I reserved.

Wishing you all a good day,

Gail

Kathleen: Thanks for the heads up about the new thread tomorrow.

I agree with Jet, Janey -- there are a million new activities and groups and classes out there. There's no reason not to be busy even without a teen at home. Chances are, before, your activities centered around your kid, but now's your chance to do what YOU want!!! Go for it!

Good Morning:

Well, I went to bed just before 7pm yesterday and got up a couple of minutes ago at 5am. Ten hours. I usually don't get anywhere near that amount of sleep at one time but I guess I needed it badly. I feel great.

I've got some beautiful organic eggplants from a friend of a friend's garden and plan to make moussaka with one of them. I usually make it in two 8" square pans and I freeze one. It's a LOT of work but is so good and it freezes well. Meanwhile, I'm freezing my tomatoes like crazy and still have lots more. I've been giving some to friends and my daughter.
It's just lovely; everyone is enjoying them. Last week Sentry had a "sale" on heirloom tomatoes and they weren't even organic. The sale price was $5.99/lb!

Stay well and be happy.

Yesterday was a great day for me. I did a 90 minute Zumbathon to raise money for a woman with ALS. I am stiff and sore today.

I am supposed to go on a 25 minute run today, but so far Raj is feeling sick, so instead of that, I think I will take Deven and Conner (the puppy) on a long walk around the neighborhood.

I am feeling really strong!

Good Morning:

Got in a 25 minute walk in the mall with a friend yesterday. I didn't think I was going that fast but I did break a sweat. I logged my food but got into trouble and went over my calorie allowance by 400-500 calories. It was the salt that did it...hotdogs for lunch and then it was downhill. I'm hoping to do better today. A dear friend stopped by yesterday with two beautiful eggplants. I think I'll make moussaka. It's a Greek casserole with eggplant, meat in a red sauce and a layer of a bechamel sauce. It takes a lot of time to prepare, but I'll make two and put one in the freezer.

Good Morning:

Well I did better yesterday. I ate within my calorie range and I had 6 cups of water. Also, I logged what went into my mouth.

Real Age recommends drinking green tea if you are trying to lose weight. I am always drinking tea, but yesterday I had a huge mugful...14oz. It helped a lot.

My thoughts are there for all those in the wake of Irene. I'm really worried about my friend, Celeste, the one with stage 4 lung cancer. She lives in Brooklyn, NY and Brooklyn is one of the areas that is expected to get inundated. Her daughter lives on Long Island...same story.

Hugs for you all,

Gail

Emily: Great job on the exercise.

I went for a run last night. IT WAS HARD. It was run 10, walk 3, run 10. Very tired when I was done.

I normally run on Saturdays, but this week, it is getting bumped to Sunday. I have a Zumbathon to raise money for ALS on Saturday.

Kathleen- are you glad to see the orchids go, or will you miss them? I know they are lovely, but also high maintenance.

As for your daughter's new apartment being messy- my house is messy, too, and I have lived there for 3 years! What's my excuse? HAHA

Good work, to Emily, Gail and Jet. I am trying to log everyday too, but missed a few days this week.

So glad for Friday. But I saw 2 Spark Friends this week which makes it a good week. It seems like it was very busy at work this week and I am behind.

My daughter took back her orchids that I have been taking care of for several years. I still have 3 left of my own. I saw her new apartment -- Messy! -- but, then again, they just moved in. Have a good Friday everyone.

Way to go, Emily and Gail! Gail one thing I can do is use celery, zucchini, or cucumber in place of the chips if the dip is tasty enough. Sometimes. Or have have chips/half veggies.
What a beautiful day! Much nicer than yesterday's heat. I really want to be done with that kind of weather.
I logged my food Sunday and Monday, blew it off Tuesday and Wednesday, and today I'm going to log again.

Good Morning:

Well, I did pretty well with the salt and veggies yesterday. There is room for improvement in the salt category: I tend to eat a lot of deli and need to get away from that merry-go-round. My calories were a challenge. I really got hungry and the late afternoon, evening and night went on. I did all right, but again there is a lot of room for improvement. As a late night snack I had some home made guacamole...no salt added... and some blue organic corn chips. OK, so the corn chips are bad news. BUT I ate much less than usual, so that's progress. My guess is I still came within my calorie range or only 100-200 calories above. It wasn't a total disaster. It was progress.

One of my big achievements yesterday was logging my food. Tedious as it is it seems to be the one thing that keeps me on track or close to it.

Wishing you all a great Spark day.

Last night, I ran on the twisty ankle with pretty decent success. My biggest problem is actually the DOMS from the strength training program I have started.

I really hope I can keep it together. Tierd of backsliding all the time :)

Good Morning:

Well, Vic needed a transfusion so we wound up staying at the hospital for about six hours. Afterward we ran a few errands and by the time I got home I was wasted. I'm looking forward to relaxing today.

Did any of you read my latest blog? I cannot seem to get a grip on my food or exercise and I'm terrified about getting on the scale. Magic bullet anyone?

Enjoy the day.

Emily, I'm glad your ankle is improving.
Gail, I'd call it savory - sweet and sour maybe. I've used it with tofu as a kind of marinade and also to make a salad with corn cut from the cob and celery. I can't remember now if I have the recipe on paper or online, but when I solve that mystery I'd be happy to post it.
I have to admit that I've tracked my food two days in a row now, and it does keep me from some of my mindless snacking.

Good Evening:

What a weekend! It's been go, go, go since Friday and it won't end before tomorrow as Vic has his weekly blood test. I think he won't need a transfusion, but the test will tell.

For the past several days I have been picking veggies and freezing them. Doesn't sound like much but it's a lot of work. Whew! Glad the weekend has passed. I'm looking forward to winding down the rest of the week.

Hope you are all doing well.

Gail

Ape: So good to see you post again. Good for you for trying new exercises.

Janey: I bet you're counting the hours to see your son off. Will you have an "empty nest syndrome"?

Kathleen: Do you enjoy yard work? I try to keep my yard almost maintenance free. I just don't have the time and energy to do the yard and a veggie garden.

Jeanette: I've never heard of green tomato chutney. With what do you serve it? Is it sweet or savory? As for tracking food, I've been off the radar for a long time now and have gained back all the weight I lost. Actually, I'm afraid to get on the scale...I may weigh more than I lost. Got to get a grip.

Emily: I hope your ankle is better.

Hey there! I have been busy the past week getting ready for my sister's surprise 40th party. It was Sunday and I was able to pull it off and she was very surprised! Yeah! But boy was I beat afterwards! So last week was a blurr. I am trying a new workout at the club. It's pilates reformer and I love it. It's pilates but with the use of a machine. It is very good work on the core and I am able to focus on some little muscles I didn't know were there until I tried walking the next day :}

I can't believe summer is almost over! Boo!

Busy weekends all around. I got a lot done -- got presents for my sister's birthday, did all my strength training and exercise, tracked, and did a lot of yardwork. Among other things.

Jet I know how you feel if you get discouraged tracking. I look at it as a challenge though, can I really tell when i am going over calories? Sometimes I can, sometimes not. I am always curious about some things like my fiber and sodium so that keeps me tracking also. Good luck with your effort to track! It really does increase awareness.

Have a good Sunday night everyone.

Kathleen, I won't make the chutney until we get to the point in the season where it's time to harvest the tomatoes green or lose them.
I went for an early run and now it's time to clean and pay bills. Wow. I think I'd better throw something fun in there!
I'm going to try very hard to make myself track my food this week. I am just like a stubborn little kid when it comes to that. I'm happy to track my exercise because it feels like a positive thing. Tracking my food makes me critical of myself because even though I eat well, I eat too much. I just realized that is the reason I hate to track. Hmm..

This has been a whirlwind weekend. Friday we had a birthday luncheon for my friend. Yesterday we celebrated our sil's 50th birthday, and today I"ve got cousins from out east coming. I love it all but will be happy when tomorrow comes.

Good Afternoon:

I'm really beat and about to take a nap. Thought I'd check in first.

Yesterday I went to the beauty school to get my hair done. They changed the pricing structure so now when you go for a tint you get a tint, shampoo, cut and style all for $20. I think that's a big bargain. It looks so much better and is easy to manage.

Today I had a luncheon birthday for my good friend, Ann. My grandson and his girlfriend are in town so they joined us. Alex works as a cook in a restaurant, so he did almost all of the cooking and prep work. It was great company, great food and lots of laughs. One of the highlights was a huge tomato, green pepper and cucumber salad ....all organic and from my garden.

Stay well and safe,

Gail

Pretty hectic. But not disastrous like some weeks.

Hi Emily! Nice to see you!

Gail,l hope you got your walk in. Jet, hope you got your chutney canned. It sounds like you are enjoying retirement, that is good! I am looking forward to it, but not very soon.

No night out for me tonight -- my knitting cousin is busy. Middle daughter was over last night stripping furniture that she wants for her apartment. I got a visit from a neighbor, unexpected but very nice.

I have one more thing to can this summer - green tomato chutney. I cut back a little this year because I used to give a lot to coworkers...and I'm not working with them anymore. I do still get together with a fair number for lunch now and then. Last night had a group of women over for salad potluck and knitting. Mostly former coworkers. I'm still volunteering at the library. Making a quilt. NOT LOSING WEIGHT.
Sigh.

Mike dried tomatoes in the oven last year, since the oven has a dehydrating feature. We had the oven on for about 8 hours on a very hot day, and the results were chewier than dried tomatoes we've purchased. Maybe a regular dehydrator works better and uses less energy....

----------------

A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom,
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather head is good and, therefore, we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax...
OH, MY GOD!"
Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on the intercom and said,
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!"
A passenger in Business class yelled, "That's nothing. You should see the back of mine!"

Good Afternoon:

I had a hard time getting to sleep last night. My allergies kicked in something awful and the Neti Pot and allergy medicine really never had much effect. Today I'm good for nothing. I've been reading, and aside from doing a laundry and making some soup and a tomato pie there's nothing to report.

Hope you are all enjoying this beautiful day.

Good Afternoon:

Well, it's great: the house has been cleaned, the second laundry is drying, I've been to the garden and grocery, and I'm at peace with the world. I'll read, take a shower and read some more. How's that for a lazy Saturday?

My tomatoes this year are exceptional. The heirloom Greek tomatoes, German striped, Rose Berne and Brandywine are fantastic. I've never tasted such good tomatoes and, in retrospect, I'm glad I spent the extra money for heirloom and organic. My green peppers, though I don't have many, are also great. I also have a little heirloom organic pimento pepper plant. So far we've only gotten one and I'm not sure if it will give me more. The are very small but oh so good.

Thursday evening Vic and I celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary....to each other. Where has the time gone. As it turned out we went to a favorite restaurant and had so much food left over that we had a celebratory meal again on Friday. LOL

Hope you all enjoy the weekend,

Gail

April, I hope you will have many chances in the next few weeks to treat yourself well and celebrate your "birthday season." Sounds like a great concept! Hope you're feeling better too. Canoe sounds pleasant this time of year.

Yes, Steph, good idea on the end of week extra effort. Weekends can be hard. I will join you on that and get my foods in the tracker today.

Have a good evening everyone. Weekend is on the horizon!

Hey kids! Thank you for the birthday wishes. Unfortunately I had a slight blockage in my intestines the night before. I guess the colonoscopy had slowed things down afterwards and since that area is slow working due to my disease, well, it all went on vacation and didn't let me know. So things didn't work out the way I would have liked but luckily I believe in birthday seasons, not just one day so I have been celebrating a little at a time all week.

I am hoping to get the canoe out with Don this weekend. I am loving this weather!

Have a great week.

Hugs!

I am with you Kathleen, 100%. Food is so tasty and it seems unnatural to eat "healthy". I have a hard time denying the little splurges (that together add into big splurges) and even though I'm working out 6 days a week (3 days of kickboxing, 3 days of strength training, 2 days of ultimate frisbee) I've managed to only maintain my weight over the last 10 weeks. Now that's just impressive, that with burning that many calories I'm breaking even.

I find that sometimes it's the little goals that make it happen. Maybe we can all try to be better for the rest of this week, Thursday-Saturday and see how we all do. I know after putting in my food today I made a few mistakes that I'm planning not to make tomorrow. I also know how I work, and if I don't put it in the tracker (I've used Weight Watchers before) it didn't happen. emoticon But unfortunately that's not the case.

I would say try to have the courage to track your food for the next three days, let's all do it together! And don't sweat the 4lbs. It looks like it's a very small bump in the long road you've already traveled. Keep it up!

Welcome Stuffy. Anyone who can run distances like mini marathons has my total respect. Good luck with your goals on SparkPeople and we're glad to have you posting here.

I am so struggling. I have been writing down my foods, but not putting them into the tracker, so I don't know how I've been doing, and I'm up about 4 lb. I have got to get hold of this. I keep thinking, why does it have to be hard? Can't I eat intuitively? Answer : I can't. I don't have the brakes on my eating. Sometimes it is better than others.

But a positive: I went to a harp recital tonight, absolutely lovely, and my daughter and her roommate were there, so I got to meet the roommate finally and he is very pleasant.

Hoping everyone has a good restful night.

So, me in a few words. My name is Steph, I'm 26. My best friend calls me Stuffy Bumpkin (which is a long story for another time) and I joined SparkPeople because she did and it's a good way to stay in touch while working on goals together (she's out of state).

I grew up in Madison, went to college in Iowa, and am now working in the University Research Park at a biotech company. However a string of bad post-college decisions have put me up ~30lbs (was 50) since graduating and I've really kind of lost myself in gaining so much weight. It prevents me from being much better at Ultimate Frisbee, which I play a fair amount of, and kills my self-confidence.

I'm the current president of my sorority's local alumane chapter, I have a 2 year old golden retriever who is my child, and probably my biggest athletic accomplishment was completing the Madison Mini-Marathon (13.1 miles) last year even though I was 50lbs overweight.

That's me in a nutshell, I look forward to getting to know you all and getting healthier together.

I have stayed on the old thread myself several times. Cool that a Spark friend visited you at work. Yesterday we went tromping around the Pewit's Nest, then to CIrcus World, and finally to the Crane Foundation. I kind of like this retirement things...

Good Morning:

I'm off again to take Vic to the hospital, expecting he'll need a transfusion (he's been averaging one every two weeks), but hoping he won't. I'm bringing a Martha Grimes mystery, THE ANODYNE NECKLACE just in case.

Enjoy the day,

Gail

Janey and Jet, I have been just hitting the "recent posts" button and ending up in the July thread, I totally forgot to look for a new one. And now it is....the 8th?! Guess I am behind the times.

I went back to work today, which was a bit rough, after 4 days relaxing at home. But, a Spark Friend visited me at work, which really and truly made my day.

Waiting for the house to cool down a little bit. Looks like a nice week ahead.

Enjoy your evening, everyone!

Good Morning;

I guess I need an "Earth to Gail" reminder that we start a new chat at the beginning of the month. I've been lonely posting on the July thread.

Taking Vic in for his weekly blood test and a chemo session this morning. If he needs a transfusion we'll be there from about 8-4 so I'm bringing a book.

Had a very nice dinner at Louisianne in Middleton on Saturday. I took my friend out for her birthday. It's a good place but be prepared to spend mucho denaro.

Well, got to get going here. We'll be leaving very soon.

Guess we'll have to rename this the Janey and Jet chat thread. How's your foot? And how soon does your son leave? AND, how are you doing, mom, with the thought of him moving out?
