Surrounding Yourself with the Right People

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you, too, can become great."

- Mark Twain, writer and satirist

It's easy to recognize a perfect candidate for your support team. Just look for someone who has a way of making everyone else around them better: someone who succeeds by developing other people and letting them in on the fun; someone who is genuinely happy when other people succeed. That's the person you want on your side. The pages of history are heavy with tales of the misguided who were proven wrong while insisting something couldn't be done. Why put up with that? Believe in your goals enough to know that you shouldn't stomach people who don't. It's okay if you're the only one who believes in your dream. But someone who truly believes in YOU should help you believe that if anyone can do it, you can.

Eat less, move more, make good choices!

You have the power to achieve your goals!

I get these Healthy reflections everyday too. Most of them are very good. This one is really good.

It reminds me of the saying,"without change, there is no change". In other words, just willing it to happen, do not make it happen.

I swear whoever posts these has an insight into my head. This spoke to me personally and I wanted to share it:

We can't become what we need by remaining what we are.

- Max Dupree

Do you have a design for change?

Do you have a desire to lose weight, have more children, or try a new career? If so, are you taking appropriate steps towards these desires? Often your wants turn into lip service, and because of that wishy-washy determination, you may never reach your goal. The reality of life is that we need to change something in order to get something. For example, you cannot lose weight and build a healthier body by eating what you are now and remaining at the same exercise level. Formulate a plan for success by breaking down your goal into several smaller steps to promote a more optimistic and realistic strategy!

Eat less, move more, make good choices!

You have the power to achieve your goals!

The future comes one day at a time.

- Dean Acheson

Finding victory in the small stuff

Do your dreams seem far away? Does the distance between you and the finish line deflate your motivation? Often we forget that goals and dreams are not achieved overnight, but rather in a series of small steps. Progress towards your goals should also be counted as victorious! Stop looking at the end result to bring you the greatest joy. Instead, celebrate the ways in which your life is gravitating towards that desired result. Nothing is guaranteed in life, so make the most of each day and persevere. Remember that the small things in life build up to the bigger ones.

Eat less, move more, make good choices!

Celebrate we will, because life is short but sweet for certain.

- Dave Matthews Band

Applying "Carpe diem" to your everyday life

We all have goals--some immediate, some far off in the distance. By working hard and focusing on what you want to get out of life, you increase the probability of achieving all of your dreams. In the end there are no guarantees, so make the most of each day by celebrating and cherishing the moment instead of looking forward. Want to try yoga but have been too intimidated? Tired of getting the same haircut over and over? Want to go back to school? Go for it! Tomorrow is not a promise. Seize the opportunities while you still can!

Winning victory against yourself

The best inspiration is not to outdo others, but to outdo ourselves.

- Anonymous

No one likes to lose. The thrill of victory after competition is hard to match. But the wins that leave the most significant, long-term impressions are the ones where you win against yourself. Beating a friend in a game of hoops is much less meaningful than setting a personal best time while running. We live in a highly competitive world, and everything around us screams that we've got to be number one in order to feel successful. Truly though, the best measuring sticks are your past and your potential--not against someone else's standards. Raise the bar for yourself!

It's really scary how close these are to my personal beliefs. It's my News years Resolution every year to make someone smile every day. Smiles are contagious! :)

The power of a positive face

A smile is a curve that can set a lot of things straight.

- V. Borge

Have you ever contemplated how much a smile can change a person's day? Both the person who smiles and the one who sees it are positively impacted by such a small act. This seemingly tiny reflex can perk up a bad attitude, make you seem more warm and inviting, and often pass some happiness on to others. So the next time your alarm goes off for your 5 a.m. run or your dog barks in the middle of the night, smile instead of grumbling. You'd be surprised how a positive face can in turn become a positive and motivational attitude!

Victory over Trials

Adversity and loss make a man wise.

- Welsh Proverb

The need to weather hard times is constantly part of our business and personal lives. Do you ever think of these hurdles in a positive light? The next time you are faced with opposition, instead of looking at it as a source of anxiety, view it as an opportunity! Can you apply what you have learned to other areas of your life? Will this experience make you stronger and wiser next time around? Sometimes the worst and most painful experiences are the ones that help us grow the most. Having a positive attitude can deflate even the scariest situation. Overcoming adversity can help you achieve the extraordinary!

I agree. I'm a big believer in taking responsibility for ones own actions. I can try and lay blame on any number of things for my weight, but ultimately, it is me who did this to myself, therefore it needs to be me who undoes it. That way I get all the credit too :)

So true. I hate it when my husband or especially my son blame everyone else for their woes. I'm sure I do it myself even though I won't be so free to be open abot it as them. If it's not my fault, whoes fault is it. Always pointing fi ngers is a terrible game. It's not fruitful. Carol

Do you accept responsibly for your choices in life?

The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.

- Albert Ellis

Do you feel in control of your life? No matter how negative events or actions may become, you are the only force that is able to determine the reaction. Often we fail to do this and instead blame the world for our feelings of sadness, rejection, and hopelessness. The reality is that your actions are a choice, and you must claim those feelings and choices. We can be our best cheerleader or worst enemy when it comes to determining the health of our emotions. Do some pep talks with yourself each morning. This will help you develop positive, self-affirming thoughts that will enhance your personal development and growth.

That is a good one. I'll send it to Ruben perhaps to add to next months newsletter.

We have time as long as we are breathing to make change. Looking backward solves nothing. Oh, but what time do we waste in the process. It goes back to the thing I wrote two messages below this one. Making a decision, a plan and sticking to it...Not straying off that road much....Not going backward... Will get us there eventually. What's the hurry?

Today's Healthy Reflection seemed like it was speaking to me directly. Funny how that happens, eh?

...

Even if our efforts of attention seem for years to be producing no result, one day a light that is in exact proportion to them will flood the soul

- Simone Weil

What we can learn about patience from a diamond

Trying (but failing) to see your goals realized can be frustrating. Margaret Thatcher once said "You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it," and she was absolutely right. You've got to believe that you will succeed! Never admit defeat as long as time and effort remain. Our greatest asset is patience; our greatest weakness is throwing in the towel. Banish discouragement and feelings of impossibility by working hard, doing more, and not giving in! A diamond was only made beautiful after millions of years as a lump of coal.

This was not a healthy reflection, but it was one of the sparkpeople motivation articles, that got me thinking. (Very dangerous, I know)

A Motivational Story of Olympic Proportions
Wilma Rudolph's Uphill Battle to Olympic Gold

After reading the article I got to thinking. Why am I stuck? Why do I continue to fall back into my old habits and I guess, excuses -- for doing the same old thing all the time? Wilma Rudolph overcame her polio and became a great runner. This is so much harder than my problem. My problem is in my head. I keep thinking I'm fat and will always do the things to keep me fat. This is true, only because I think it. It no longer becomes true when I think different. I can become a new person today. It takes a long time to shed the weight. Just like it took a long time for Wilma's legs to become strong, but she continued to work. Getting stronger and stronger along the way. I think she probably saw in her minds eye herself running from the very beginning. Wanting to walk and then to run. All in good time, but she wouldn't let herself go backwards. Always heading toward the goal. As I am writing this, I am realizing that my goal really isn't to lose weight. My goal is to be "normal". Someone who isn't thinking constantly about food. Someone who is not stopped from activities because of their poor health and lack of stamina. I have been concentrating on the wrong thing. I need to work on my mind first and then the body will follow. How to become "normal". I already have a book that tells me. I've been telling Ruben for years that this book is the answer to our "families" problems. Letting go of the obsession with food is not easy, but it can be done. Just like quiting smoking can be easy for some, but extremely hard for others. If you can do it yourself by going cold turkey, that's great. (Yum,,, cold turkey) Sorry just kidding. But this book tells you how to plan your life into a more "normal" state. We (me, my family) doesn't know how to be "normal". This book teaches you how. Ruben thinks it just happens. You just decide to do it and you do it. Well that has not worked in the past and it's especially hard if you have a whole family with the same problem.
I can not make anyone else do this program, but I'm going to do it. It would be great if Ruben and David come along, but if they don't I can't make them. I WANT TO BE NORMAL. Just like wilma wanted to walk and then run. I want to be like a normal person who does not have to fight food and the scale everyday. I want to be able to kayak and hike and do whatever I want to. I'm going to blog this so I can remember what I'm thinking.

Feel free to make comments.

That is great insight on looking at ourselves once in a while. I know what I am thinking in my head and how I WANT to project myself outwardly but I'm not always aware of how I ACTUALLY come across. Something to think about. Thanks.

You must be careful how you walk and where you go, for there are those following you who will set their feet where yours are set.

- Robert E. Lee, Civil War General

Be worthy of imitation

They say imitation is the greatest compliment, but are your actions worthy of imitation? We are all in some setting of leadership. Whether it be as a parent, boss, or friend we should constantly examine the example we are setting for those around us. Are you being a positive role model? Are you treating others in a dignified way? Be a cheerful and diligent worker, parent, and boss to those around you. Children, especially, are like sponges taking in your every action and word--they naturally want to be just like you. So be mindful of your word and deed, you never know who might be watching and silently learning what you are demonstrating.

.....................

I know I'm guilty of not being a good example lately, and will strive to improve that image, both to myself and others!

Sooooo true!!!

Know your limits...but never stop trying to exceed them.

- Anonymous

Overcoming your personal "stop signs"

Many of us use our "limitations" as a stop sign for reaching our goals. While knowing our limits can safeguard us against injury and embarrassment, too often we use them as avoidance methods in our lives. What is holding you back from reaching your goals? How can you push beyond your comfort zone in a healthy way? Many dieters experience such limitations in on their weight loss journeys. Our bodies and minds are capable of overcoming much more than we could ever imagine if we just try. Today set new goals that may push you a little. Overcoming your personal hang-ups and fears may be one of the most rewarding choices you'll ever make!

Another one that really hit home with me!

If there is no wind, row." - Latin Proverb
"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." - Milton Berle, comic
"Things come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle

- Abraham Lincoln, U.S. President

Making your own opportunities

Wow! Three for one! If you see a common theme between the three, it's no accident. It's up to you to make sure your goals come to pass. If there are things standing in your way, waiting for someone to take care of those obstacles will result in a long wait. When things aren't going your way, change generally starts with you. Why sit around hoping for big things to happen, when you can take control and force the issue? Don't settle for the leftovers in life. Take a seat at the head table and order up a five-course dinner of everything it has to offer. No invitation necessary.

This one hit home with me. I've really been slacking this week; snacks have been bad and not working out. I need to take charge of my life again, no one else will!

A meaningful life requires hard work

Part of being a good leader and good example is holding people accountable to their promises. To reach your goals, you need to be a strong leader of yourself. That means making sure you live up to the promises you made to yourself and to others. Your goals are important to you. They'll also require some work. If you could put one person in charge of your most personal, most precious goals, would you hire someone who looks for the easy way out or just talks a good game? Or would you entrust them to the person who willingly takes action and does whatever is needed to make it happen? You can handle the job. Prove yourself trustworthy by showing up every day with your sleeves rolled up.

Another really good one. However, looking around my office frightens me! LOL!

Seeing the wonder in the smallest details

What do you appreciate and what do you ignore? Is a sunrise any less special because its image wouldn't make it on a magazine cover? Is any day less precious because, in your mind, "nothing special" happened? For some reason, it's hard to be impressed with anything these days. Driving a car is a source of strain instead of wonder. The internet is already old news. Quick--when was the last time you paid attention to a space shuttle flight? Remember when that was all people could talk about? Once you take something for granted, you also take the life out of it. When nothing is "special," boredom and gloom aren't far behind. Look around where you're sitting right now, and try to see it for the first time, like a child would. Think about the human potential that created the stuff in the room. Think about the miracles of nature right outside your window. Think about how amazing it is that you're even here to see it

Yep Yep...It's me who makes the choices of what I eat, and when and how I work out. What he or anyone else does is beyond my control.

This reminded me of the conversation we had last night about husbands and the effects they have. Ok I was wrong - LOL!

Finding fault with everything you see

We all know people who just like to complain. It seems that no matter how good they have it, they're always spreading negative energy. Even the best, most painstaking listener can have trouble with someone who finds fault with everything around them. You can shine even in the worst situations if your character is strong. If you're starting to see the "dark side" too often and find yourself blaming your circumstances on other people, take another look. If you think a change of scenery will solve all your problems, think again. Change can be good. Moving on to new things can be an exciting chance to stretch yourself and break a rut. But it's important to start with yourself when you're finding things to improve. No matter where you live, work or play, the only constant is you. You can't escape yourself. Change on the outside will have no effect on your happiness or fulfillment unless you change on the inside, too.

Are you a good friend to yourself?

If you met yourself, would you want to stick around and talk? Are you the kind of person others can be proud of? Hopefully you are, because that's who will be with you for your entire life. Your values and beliefs create a pretty good picture of what you want to see in the mirror. To be proud of yourself, do everything you can to make real life look like that vision. Find people that have the qualities you want and learn from them. Becoming a person you like gives you the confidence that you're someone worth being friends with. There's also a flip side to the friendship coin--you also need to cut yourself as much slack as you do your friends. You have friends because you see the good in them, not the flaws. You like them the way they are, warts and all. You enjoy their company and root for them to be happy and do their best. Look at yourself the same way. To be a good friend to yourself, accept your blemishes, while still pushing yourself to reach your full potential. Don't harp on your weaknesses. Take another look in the mirror and be kinder this time.

Excellent! Candidate for nesletter :)

Becoming the person you want to be

Take a look at your priorities and your goals. Where did they come from? Are they the products of soul-searching, self-analysis, and careful planning? Or are they a reaction to pressures from other people? Did you find them within yourself or within the pages of a magazine? The answers to these questions are important because they tell you if the person you're becoming is someone you want to be. Here's another way to look at a goal: do you want it, or do you just think you should want it? It's not easy to follow your own direction in life. But it's more possible than you may think. Question everything. Every priority in your life needs to justify why it's there. If you can't come up with a good reason that actually comes from YOU, maybe it doesn't belong.

Another really good one!

Do you see possibilities or problems?

It's been said that some of the smartest people around would make lousy entrepreneurs. How can that be? The fact is, some people are so smart they can easily see all of the problems, roadblocks, and snafus that they'll need to overcome to succeed. They can think of all kinds of reasons why their idea won't work. This knowledge can overwhelm any thoughts of possibilities or dreams. When you think of your goals, do you focus on the positives of making it happen, or the negatives of potential barriers? To reach your goals, you gotta really want them. More importantly, you gotta really believe that you can do it. Think more about why you CAN make it happen instead of why you can't. No more excuses.

Whoever does these does an excellent job!

Are you a lion or a lamb?

How will your life be remembered? Will your story be lost among the millions who were afraid to take a chance? Or will you leave something noble behind? There's nothing to gain by following the crowd or doing what you've always done. You may as well put yourself out to pasture. But there's everything to gain by believing that you're king or queen of the jungle, even if just for a day. (Go ahead and roar if you want to.) Each of us has an amazing opportunity to live large if we allow it. It takes leaving the comfort of our familiar meadows and walking into the unknown. Once you take that chance, you've made your days worthwhile. Even if you have few resources, adventure is around every corner, and life is waiting to be devoured. If you were to write the book of your life, would you want to read it?

You said it! That's my philosphy in a nutshell. I try and make someone smile every day of my life.

I keep a magnet with a quote by Emerson on the dishwasher

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

I'm a firm believer in this one too. I wish I had learned it earlier in life. I guess I grew up in the "ME" generation. The ME, ME, ME, "put yourself first" way of life is terribly unfulfilling and empty. I would have been so much happier if I'd learned this a long time ago. We are not truly happy until we connect with others and one of the best way to connect is to be open, available and to help.

The only thing left when we are gone is the effect we had on others and in the meantime, while we are still here, one small kindness can brighten a day for yourself and others.

Investing time and energy in others

People usually talk of "spending" energy and time on others as if once it's used, it's gone. In reality, that effort is a powerful investment because you'll get more in return. When a match lights a candle, the match's flame doesn't shrink--if anything, it grows. In the same way, you'll be even more inspired and successful by building others up. The bonus is that they'll also be better equipped to return the favor. Take action today to make someone's life a little better. Come up with just one nice thing to do for each of the important people in your life, one little thing that can make all the difference. After all, what good does it do to improve your health or your life if you're not going to do anything with it?

Another really good one came in the mail today. I sat here nodding my head as I ready it. So true!

Tackling big challenges with small actions

This is a perfect illustration of tackling big challenges with small actions. It also shows the power of focus. There's a growing tendency for people to want to have it all. Not wanting to sacrifice anything, they run themselves straight into the ground--sometimes literally--only to end up frustrated, unhealthy, and tired, with nothing to show for it. What they don't realize is that you can have it all (or close to it). You just can't have it all right now. Does it feel like you're always busy, but you never seem to get anywhere? That's because when you try to do everything, you don't do anything well. Your child may force you to learn this lesson anyway. Instead of living your life all at once, try doing one thing at a time. Choose one goal and, through some small "things" every day, focus in on it until you've succeeded. During the day, put your full mind and efforts on one task at a time. You'll be much more productive (and calm) in the long run.

Speaking of the tops magazines. I was just finishing of last months magazine. There is a pretty good article on "how to stay with it". That's not the exact the wording, but it's the idea. They are putting much better articles in there now. I am putting together info to put in the "NEW MEMBER folder" and may scan this article to put it in there.

I too love these e-mails and today this one popped up.

Who Can Help You Reach Your Goals?

It's true. You're surrounded by people who want nothing more than to see you succeed and fulfill your dreams. They're out there watching as you go after your goals, hoping you make the right decisions, silently cheering each victory, wincing at each setback. Some of them may even want to join you on the journey to a particular goal. The kicker is that you don't know for sure where the source of this help may come from. It could be your spouse, a cousin, your dentist--even your mom. The only way to bring help out of the shadows is by talking. Tell people about your goals, and why they're important to you. Let them see your enthusiasm, and ask them to help keep you motivated and accountable (while you do the same for them). Get a goal buddy or a personal coach. You're in the midst of well-wishers. Find out who they are and become part of the conspiracy.

I think that Cobby and I are right there for eachother. Thanks Cobby. Hey did you guys get your tops news yet? There are two articles that really are just like this....one on goal setting and the other buddies and tops.

I Care, Sharon

Ruben says he's going to put at least one Healthy reflection in each of the newsletters. I've saved a bunch of them in my mail.

Carol - thanks so much for introducing me to these. I'm really glad I'm getting them every day now!

Today's really hit home.
In case whoever reads this doesn't get them, here is today's

Give Your Body Quality Fuel

Whenever you get in the car, what's the first thing you do before leaving the driveway? You check your fuel level. Whether you're just going to the corner store or to the four corners of the Earth, you always check it. Every journey needs the right type and right amount of fuel. Your health journey is no exception. To avoid sputtering, stalling and poor performance, make sure your body has what it needs to make the trip. Energy comes from whole grains and other natural foods. Try to have plenty of both on reserve and within easy reach. And avoid putting sugar in your "gas tank." Drive on!
