I have always love Pope John Paul II and was happy he was canonized so quickly. He radiated compassion and love. I have read all of his books, just an amazing man and what a command of many languages! He had the ability to forgive the man who tried to kill him...I could go on but most of us know of the greatness of John Paul II.

However, my confirmation name is Elisabeth and so she is my favourite. I read that she has the distinction of being one of the first to know about Mary's great blessing as the Mother of God! (I have read she was Mary's cousin as well.) A nun who was my teacher suggested this name to me since her name was Elizabeth as well. She said she noticed I was wise beyond my years and that people felt at ease to say things to me that they would never say to anyone else.

Her feast day is November 5th and this is the day after my grandmother's birthday so I thought it was a good name to choose.

All the best, Eliza!

Favourite saint? Hmmm...I really like St. Gianna. As a woman, wife, mother, and pediatrician, I feels she really understands the sorts of troubles I have within my family, and at work, where I work with children. She is my "go-to" saint for all ill children.

Prayers for Fr Michael --several of my twitter priests have also asked for prayers for him. Please assure him that many, many prayers are being said on his behalf.

ElizaCG,

Yes, I am in New Mexico. In many ways I feel a sort of spiritual bond to New Mexico, although I have only been here two years and I hate being so far from my family.

I grew up in the Bible Belt, which is not really very friendly to Catholics. We don't talk about "Catholic stuff" in public. We are told that we are not Christians, that we pray to statues, and that we worship Mary not Jesus, and when we try to explain, we are told that we don't know what we are talking about.

So, not long after I moved to New Mexico, I was having my hair done and a man walked in and he and my hairdresser started talking about attending the rosary for a man who had recently died. I almost fell out of my chair. People were talking about "Catholic stuff" in a public business. I soon learned that whether people are Catholic or not, Catholicism is part of the culture. The restaurants hang out signs for Lenten specials.

I walked through the plaza yesterday and discovered a whole row of tiled pillars telling the stories of various historical buildings. Old San Miguel Mission is the oldest. In a public plaza there is this pillar telling about Apaches being scared away from raiding a church by a giant angel with a sword! In so many other parts of the country people would protest that this was a violation of the separation of church and state. But, not here. The plaza will be decorated for Christmas. There will be a Nativity scene in lights on public land, and no one will protest regardless of their faith or lack of faith.

I still marvel that the oldest establishment in my town is my church and it is 200 years older than the United States.

I am sorry about your priest friend not being allowed to say mass. I will pray for him. I hope that things are resolved for him soon.

Annette

I have lots of favorite saints. Some are family favorites: Saint Anthony, Saint Jude, and of course, the Blessed Mother. I loved Saint Luke as a teenager because I wanted to be a doctor. I've always liked Saint Elizabeth, and Saint Anne now that others have mentioned her. St. Therese, the Little Flower, has been a favorite for a long time because of her simplicity.

However, since moving to New Mexico, I have a bit of a new slant. I live about 30 miles from Magdalena, a village that was named for Mary Magdalene because someone saw her image on the mountains. I'm not sure how anyone would know that the woman's image was specifically that of Mary Magdalene. Nonetheless, with Magdalena and the Magdalena Mountains so nearby, Mary Magdalene is more in my thoughts these days.

Likewise, being in the SW, I see images of Our Lady of Guadalupe everywhere I go. Of all the Marian apparitions, I think Our Lady of Guadalupe has always been my favorite, although Our Lady of Lourdes has also been very special to me. My fondness for Our Lady of Guadalupe has grown in the past two years.

However, today, meaning no disrespect to Our Lady, my saint of the day is San Miguel.

My church is the Old San Miguel Mission, celebrating its 400th anniversary (give or take a few years) this year. The church proper has just been reopened and rededicated after being closed for repairs for 4 years. The repairs were expedited in the past year by a grant from the Hilton Foundation. (Conrad Hilton, the founder of the hotel chain, was New Mexican and, I believe, Catholic).

My town is named Socorro because the first group of Spaniards to reach this area were about to die and were given "succor" by the Piro Indians who had a settlement here. Under the direction of 2 Franciscan friars, the Piro Indians built the first Catholic church here. It was rebuilt and upgraded in subsequent years. Since future Spaniards did not repay the initial kindness of the Piro Indians with kindness towards the Piros or any other Indians, there was eventually the Pueblo Revolt. All of the Pueblos except one joined together to wage war against the Spaniards. The Isleta Pueblo, between here and Albuquerque, took the side of the Spaniards. By this time, the San Miguel Mission had been built in fine style, as beautiful as any church in Spain or Mexico, with silver altar rails. The priests took the silver altar rails out and buried them somewhere during the Pueblo Revolt for safe keeping but they have never been returned and no one knows where they are.

Later there was an Apache raid, but the Apaches stopped when they approached the San Miguel mission and did not enter the church. Later, one of the Apaches who had been captured was asked about this. He said that as they approached the church, a giant angel bearing a large sword appeared to them, and the Apaches left the church alone.

I just read the story today. So, today San Miguel is my favorite. It feels good to think of a giant archangel with a big sword watching over my town, my church, and me.

ELIZACG9- here's a short biography of St Jean. It's not complete by any means, but you'll get the idea http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/
78596/Saint-Jean-de-Brebeuf. I've read teh jesuit relations documents about his life and martyrdom,,,,he was an amazing person, he even wrote the "Huron Carol" in Huron for his converts.

St Jean de Brebeuf...Echon as the Hurons is a saint I had never heard of, yesterday I went to mass with my Dh, his Mom and my sister in law, I was in line for confession and, they did not save my place where I had left my purse, someone came and they let her sit down without saying a word....how rude so I will need to think of St. Jean, I thought they were rude and, I had to sit in front of them....
I like
St. John Vianney...and St Ignatius Loyola and St. Cecilia (my middle name).
St Teresa is another one I love.

I have a few favorites: St Jean de Brebeuf...Echon as the Hurons called him. A gentle giant of a man whose martyrdom was especially gruesome ....even by the standards of martyrdoms, and he kept his mouth shut during all of it ( I can't keep my mouth shut when someone's rude to, so I ask him to help me) St. John Vianney...because he is the Patron of Parish Priests and I love praying for priests ( it's something I can do to support them) and St Ignatius Loyola because he started the Jesuits and I love this order, who I consider to be Super Heros.

St. Anthony helped my nephew find his wallet that had been lost for weeks. He didn't tell anyone. We prayed to St. Anthony and he went home and found it. He also intercede to help my sister find her expensive camera. We prayed that my other sister would be able to rent a van in Alaska after she was told they had none. They got a nice one! I've been praying for a lost item. All who read this please pray that I find it. Thanks.

St. Anthony of Padua
So simple and resounding was his teaching of the Catholic Faith, so that the most unlettered and innocent might understand it. I want to express my love for Jesus, so that the most unlettered and innocent might understand it. I pray that Saint Anthony help me to pass on to others the love Jesus so freely gave to me.

He is typically depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus, to whom He miraculously appeared. I would also love to hold the infant Jesus.

He is commonly referred to today as the "finder of lost articles."

ONESAUCYTRINI - I had never heard of that devotion. I had to look it up and found "The divine shepherdess". How cool is that?

WANNAREAD - he really was.

Michelle - The basilica of St. Anne de Beaupre? It is sooooo beautiful. We spent hours exploring it when we visited Quebec last year! I have discovered that my favourite places to visit when touring or travelling, are churches, cathedrals, etc.

ESCOBEDO - I have never heard of that saint. Thanks for sharing a bit about him. And all praise be to God that He heard his prayers on your behalf!

I love Saint Anne's story as well.

My favorite saint is Santo Toribio Romo, the saint of immigrants. My husband and I prayed for his intersession when we were working on his immigration case and were out in Cuidad Juarez. Scary place to be. We asked him to be our mediator and lift our prayers up to the Lord so that He would allow us to go home safely and together and He answered our prayers!

My favorite Saint is Anne, the mother to Marry, There is a Beautiful Bascila in Quebec, Canada, I walked in there mostly as a tourist, but felt instantly the peace and love. I picked her as my name when I was confirmed, as a young girl. Now I know why, she is very close to my heart.

Heehee. When I saw the notification about someone having responded to this thread, my first thought was to add that we just got our newest saint in Canada - St. Andre! I log on, and see that it was he who you were talking about!

St. Andre, pray for us!
Woot! Canada's 11th saint!

Blessed Andre Bassette will become a saint tonight in Rome starting at midnight. It will be shown on EWTN.

He is the first member of the congregation of Holy Cross to become a saint. He is the first Canadian born male saint. At St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal many people have had miraculous recoveries.

He had a great devotion to St. Joseph and always told people to ask St. Joseph to intercede for them.

A prayer:

Lord, our God,
friend of the lowly,
you gave your servant, Brother Andre Bessette,
a great devotion to St. Joseph
and a special commitment to the poor and afflicted.
Through his intercession,
help us to follow his example of prayer and love
and so come to share with him in your glory.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.
Brother Andre, pray for us.

St. Katherine Drexel. I was working for a small AM radio station, and I was putting together a radio special for her canonization. It was the week before, and I got the idea to see if I could get a live report from Rome, a long shot. I tried the various news sources we use, but was unable to line it up. By Friday my last resource failed.

I finally said to Mother Katherine Drexel, "If you want this to happen, you make it happen." That afternoon, I got a call from one of the sources I had called earlier--one of the correspondents was going on vacation to Italy that week, and was going to be in Rome on that Sunday (October 1, 2000), and would be happy to provide me with the live report.

My radio special came through fine, and I got the live report from Rome!

I also like St. Anthony of Padua and St. Maria Goretti (sorry if I spelled that wrong).

Well said!

I remember learning with the students about St. Louis. He was a rich, but very devout man. He attended Mass daily and always tried to be a humble man, and fair and just king.

The feast of St. Louis the King was Wed. He cared so much about the poor. As a king that was quite amazing, almost a contradiction. He was involved in the crusades but he did it with the best intentions. Way back then they had a different mindset. They felt it was their duty to spread Christianity no matter the price. Today we need to spread Christianity through service, example, and teaching. Don't be afraid to let people know you go to church. We don't go to church because we think we're better than others. We go to praise God and we go because we know we need his help.

We should once in a while invite someone to Mass. Sometimes this may be out Catholic relatives and friends who are slipping in their attendance. We have to help recharge their faith and their desire for the Eucharist.

The saints are like loving aunts and uncles to me. I feel so close to them and love collecting all the different prayer cards, medals and rosarys.
My favorites are:
St. Michael the Archangel, he's come to me in dreams
St. Martin de Porres, patron of mixed race people and I pray that he can fight the heartbreaking racism I see
St. Philomena, strong and radiant I feel her presence sometimes
St Therese- Little Flower, a powerful loving healer, I think she was probably a lot like me in life.
Pope John Paul II, I know he still loves us all, he was such a compassionate man
Our Lady of Czestochowa, she is also a strong healer for me and I feel that she has protected me from violence

God bless all of the SparkPeople who are angels in my life helping me on this journey!

I have so many saints that I absolutely love. But I think I'd have to go with Saint Philomena. (my Confirmation saint) I was told when choosing my Confirmation saint that I should choose someone who died/stood up for what they believed in AND a sin that I struggled with. ex. If you suffer with purity, you should pick St. Agnes or St. Maria Goretti because they died for not wanting to give up their innocence and purity.

All growing up, I was a bit of a trouble maker who got into quite the "sticky" situations. I would always (and still do) pray for St. Philomena to intercede for me and help me out and she always did.

Later on, I started learning more about St. Philomena and found her to be very inspiring. Here's some things that I learned.

*She's the only saint to not have been "physically" seen by anyone.

*St. Philomena appeared to 3 random people in three different locations and told them her life story.
(they all went to the Vatican with the exact story)

*Her father wanted to marry her off but she refused because she had made a vow of purity to Our Lord. “Do you wish that for the love of a man I should break the promise I have made to Jesus Christ? My virginity belongs to Him. I can no longer dispose of it."

*When she refused, soldiers were sent to make her "accept" the offer. First, they put her in prison, tied up to chains, starving her of food. (Jesus appeared to her each night comforting her)

After 37 days of being in prison, the Virgin Mary appeared to her saying "My daughter, three days more of prison and after forty days you shall leave this state of pain."

She was released from prison then scourged like her Divine Spouse.

The Emperor then ordered for the others to chain an anchor around St. Philomena's neck and throw her into the water.

"I was cast into the water, but God sent to me two angels who unfastened the anchor. It fell into the river mud where it remains, no doubt, to the present time. The angels transported me gently in full view of the multitude upon the riverbank. I came back unharmed, not even wet, after being plunged with the heavy anchor. When a cry of joy rose from the watchers on the shore, and so many embraced Christianity by proclaiming their belief in my God"

A shower of arrows were then shot at her. The Emperor then ordered for the others to shoot her in the heart with flaming arrows. The bows then turned around and hit the archers. Many of the Pagans started to believe in God after this.

She was then beheaded by the Emperor after 3 days. " My soul took flight towards my heavenly Spouse who placed me with the crown of virginity and the palm of martyrdom in a distinguished place among the elect. The day that was so happy for me and saw me enter into glory was Friday, the third hour after midday, the same hour that saw my Divine Mater expire."

I love everything about St. Philomena. I've made many promises to her and she's always come through.

"My children, St. Philomena has great power with God. Her virginity and generosity in embracing heroic martyrdom has rendered her so agreeable to God that He will never refuse anything that she asks for us."
-St. John Vianney

"With St. Philomena, nothing is refused"
-Virgin Mary

She was declared "Patroness of Mary" by Bl. Pope Pius IX

I'm in Canada, and originally, according to my priest when I asked him, because Canada is so vast and traditionally the parishes were so few and far between, the number of Days of Obligation was lessened as it was thought that few faithful could make it to Mass to fulfill their duty. Most of my good friends and the devout Catholics I know take advantage of the fact that we live in a large city and attend Mass whenever we can, often daily in many cases.

I'm at a Catholic school, too, so I'm lucky to get to go whenever there is a Holy Day of Obligation, also. (If school is in session.)

Some Days of Obligation are allowed to be celebrated on Sunday. I believe Immaculate Conception or All Saints' Day are Holy Days that are not allowed to celebrated on a Sunday. There are others, I'm sure, that I don't recall offhand.

Today is the feast of St. Francis Xavier. I read my Advent prayer book this morning and that helped me remember that!

CJ, why do you have different days of obligation? Does it depend on the country you live in? Where are you from?

I emoticon learning something new!

Oh, that's right, you guys have different Days of Obligation than we do. We have two, would you believe: Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Of course, we're blessed that we are at a Catholic school, so we get to attend Mass on the big feast days like the Immaculate Conception anyway.

I want to find out what became of St. Thomas More's 2nd wife and children after he was imprisoned and eventually beheaded. (His first wife died.)

Yesterday was the feast of St. Andrew.

Dec. 6 is the feast of St. Nicholas.
Dec. 12 is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

A true hero for us to emulate!
My birthday is his feast day, so I feel a special connection. I, too, thank you for posting about him. And, I might add, putting us back on topic for this thread, lol!

I think he's fascinating. He was the Chancellor of England under Henry VIII and gave it up to avoid a conflict with his faith and his position. He subsequently refused to take an oath repudiating the Church, even though it cost him his life.

I read The Other Boleyn Sister and Thomas More was mentioned a lot so I started reading more about him. He is an interesting saint. I'd like to continue to find out more about him. I'm glad you mentioned him.

St Thomas More, because he didn't want to be a martyr and used all his wits to avoid martyrdom, but in the end, he would not compromise his faith to live a few more years.

Didn't find the saint yet, but I found this on the EWTN website:

My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Reedski - that's good that Father didn't back down. I like it when priests stand their ground like that.

I want to find the saint who had that vision...

CJ, during Mass I found the page in the front that tells what to do if you can't receive communion and I read that. They should word it the way you explained it, as a spiritual communion. They should put a special prayer to say in the missalette in circumstances like that.

I told Father just before Mass about my fruit smoothie. I was hoping he'd say, "That's ok." but he stuck to his guns.

That's good that he did.

Dee, how is your knitting coming along? I liked the article about your knitting.

Great little miracle!

After Mass I once mentioned to a priest (who is incredibly devout and 'old school') that I had mistakenly had a bit of food before Mass and so couldn't receive and he figured it had been long enough, and I would have been fine. However, I had not felt right about it, so chose to receive a blessing instead. I offered it up as a small sacrifice for those who needed God's mercy at that moment.

Have you guys all heard of spiritual communion when you cannot physically receive? I loved hearing about a saint (cannot remember which one) who once in a dream or vision saw herself receiving from Christ two gorgeous chalices one silver, one gold. One was for her physical communions, the other her spiritual ones. I always thought that was a beautiful story.

I had forgotten about receiving 'spiritual communions', so I thank you, Reedski, for reminding me with your story.

A little miracle

Fr. Pinto said to pray to Mary to intercede for us. I read in his little book how important the Eucharist is to receive. After I read that I prayed that if I could sleep the whole night through and then I would get up and go to Mass in the morning. I think I prayed this Sat. or Sun. night. I wasn't bargaining. I thought in my prayers that I need to try for 8 hours of sleep. I usually only get 6 or 7 because of waking up in the night.

Monday morning I woke up at 5:25 a.m. without having woken up during the night. I was so excited. I got up and started to get ready for work and planned to leave early for Mass. On the way to Mass I started to drink the fruit smoothie I had made for breakfast. I realized I couldn't receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. So that was very disappointing.

However, I was very happy that I slept the night through. That was a little miracle for me.

Today at Mass the gospel was about Zaccheus.
I drank some of my fruit smoothie while driving. Completely slipped my mind. So, I couldn't receive the Eucharist.

I saw a priest named Fr. Pinto speak this weekend. I'll write about a little miracle later. The bell rang.

St. Therese the Little Flower or the Child of Jesus

"...When she lay dying, she said: "I have never given the good God anything but love, and it is with love that he will repay. After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good on earth." The Little Flower died on September 30, 1897. She was proclaimed a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1925."
