Hi. my name is Tammy and I am 40 years old. I have struggled with depression and ADD my entire life. And weight issues as well. I have always felt fat and ugly with the exception of those few moments in my life when I actually felt beautiful. I have 80+ pounds to lose.

I am working on me this year. Mentally, spiritually and physically. My goal is to try to find more balance in my life and get back to a healthier version of myself for myself and my children and husband. I come from a long line of diabetic people with heart trouble and am scared to leave my children without me. I lost my dad a few years ago and it was still entirely too soon. So I want to be around for a very long time. And getting healthy is the only way that is going to happen.

I would have to say my greatest struggle in weight loss is my emotional eating. It knocks me right off course everytime. Especially when depression kicks in and then I just don't care. At least not in the moment. I get upset, sad or stressed and I reach for whatever it is I feel the need to binge on, be it a huge bowl of sugared cream of wheat dripping in butter, or a whole bag of some sort of chocolate. I ate 3 king sized chocolate candy bars in one evening for crying out loud. I feel out of control all of the time with the eating but want to desperately to no longer feel uncomfortable in my own skin. Sorry this was so long. I just want to change my life and need to find something to help me tap into a constant renewing source of encouragement and inspiration. Thanks for listening. :)

Takin' it off SLOW and keepin' it off for GOOD!!

emoticon to both Spark and this team, BERNMABT. It can be so frustrating to continue fighting our inner dialogue. Just as we need to make healthier choices in our food choices, so too do we need to choose healthier mantras. When those tapes start playing that you are overweight, say to yourself something motivational and positive. Slowly those tapes will begin to disappear. Hang in there. We are here for you.

Hello everyone! I'm new to SP and I'm beyond excited to get started. I've dealt with depression and anxiety on a daily basis and it is a constant struggle. In high school I weighed 210lbs and since then I've dropped 50lbs and weigh a respectable 160. However, despite this weight loss, I constantly struggle with my body image issues. I'm so close to my end goal of 140 and I feel the only thing holding me back is my own self. Sometimes I don't know how to get past my mental block thinking I'm still obese. I want so badly to be confident, but its hard when doctors are still telling me Im hovering on the overweight line. I'm hoping that this SP will be the motivation and support I need to reach my goals and become the person I so badly want to become.

You lead such a busy life and that coupled with depression can be so difficult. That being said, you are off to such a great start. Don't forget to reward yourself for each goal you meet. It can be such a great incentive on those difficult days we all experience. Whatever you do, know we are here for you and that you are NOT alone.

Hello everyone. I'm a 30 year old Mother, Wife and Nurse. I've dealt on/off with depression, anxiety and weight issues for most of my life. I take medication that controls the depression/anxiety pretty well, but there are those days that are still pretty awful. On a good note, I just quit smoking at the beginning of December in time for my 30th birthday that just took place on the 3rd. I'm trying to slowly get involved on here to try and make my way toward some weight loss and an increase in my overall health. I have quite a bit to lose, but I'm trying to take small steps and ease into it so that I don't sabotage my new sobriety from smoking.

Greetings, I am pleased to be a member of this group. I've been dealing with bipolar disorder for the last 31 years. Right now, it is pretty well under control through medications and therapy. I have debilitating diseases that keep me from working outside the home. I am on disability and live with my sister. We own a home in a small community, less than 3800 people. I also have agoraphobia and don't leave the house often.

I'm looking to meet new friends.

Hi. New here but not to spark. I've tried so incredibly over and over but can't see there's a light at the end of the tunnel and give up. Needing to loose 100 lbs seems so impossible. I've been 300 + for so long I can't even remember what or how it felt to do simple day to day tasks without being tired out or hurting so much.

Hi everyone, I just joined SP! I've been living with depression for most of my life but only just got officially diagnosed with it this year. Went through some tough times starting in October when my thyroid medication got upped and it really messed with my Lexapro. Started withdrawing and lying to people about how I was doing. I'm doing better now but I'm not having to deal with the aftermath. I just moved from Louisiana to Kentucky and am living on my own, and now I'm ready to start becoming healthier. Can't wait to get involved in this group!

xoxo Brittany

Thank you all :)

The hardest is to reach out and admit my trouble to others. We tend to put on so many masks and pretend all is fine. One thing that is helping me overcome this is realising that all the people that look like they have it all together, actually are pretending too ;) We are all broken in some way or another. And maybe, the areas where I am strong, I can help someone else. And in the same way, someone else can help me where I'm not that strong.

Thanks for welcoming me !

PEPPADEW - Most of the motivation you are looking for has to come from within yourself. Some of the things I have found helpful are: Telling myself " I can do it," reading an inspirational quote each day, keeping a positive attitude-focus on the good things that happen each day and not the bad things (look around, you can always find people who are worse off than you are), helping someone else who is in need (sometimes a person only needs someone to listen to them,) reaching out to others who understand and having a strong a strong faith, I have found that life is what you make it. I have had depression most of my life. Have a great day!

Sounds like you are well on your way to a full recovery. Big weight loss, support at work. And reaching out to this team on spark people. I also slip into depression easily so I know how it feels. I am trying taking it minute by minute. One of my emotional eating problems is fast food, It is so easy for me to get sad and say dumb things to myself. For instance, "I have had a horrible day and all I want to do is drive through Mcdonalds and get a huge meal and sit in front of the TV and forget this day ever happened" So I know those days are always going to happen for me, so I just am making sure that when they do, I forgive myself and move on. Since starting this way of thinking, Instead of my fastfood fallbacks happening several days a week, I only need those days once a month. I don't weigh myself anymore, but the doctors have let me know that I am making good progress. Yay.

You aren't alone in your journey. Keep your chin up and keep on keeping on. Welcome back.

emoticon to the team, PEPPADEW. Sounds like you have hit a pretty rough patch recently. Between bullying, being the sole bread winner and depression... no wonder you are struggling with emotional eating. The good news is that you have not only recognized the correlation, but have reached out for support. We are here for you as you move forward on this journey to a healthier you. If you haven't already, it might be productive if you set one healthy goal to strive for each day. Maybe a 10 minute walk, a game of tag with the family, 64 oz of water.... Whatever you might help you replace the mindless eating with something healthy.

Hi there

Things are not easy for me, but somehow I have to make a change for the better. I have been a member of SP a few years ago, but sadly I lose steam and courage fast. I have never been officially diagnosed with depression, but working through some recent issues, I've realised I've had some kind of low level of depression ever since teenage years.

Issues I have to deal with is emotional eating. Also, being the only breadwinner does not help the stress and depression at all. Due to a retrenchment about 4 years ago, I've slid down a very bad slope and gained 20kg's ontop of an already obese status. Currently I'm working as a Maths and Science Teacher at a private institute. I've been through serious bullying at my previous place of work, but my current boss has been God-sent as she has helped me to restore a lot of my self-confidence.

I've lost 15+ kg just working for her :) Its time now to shake off the rest of the baggage.

But I need help. I slip into depression and despondency easily. This is an attempt at reaching out of my place of isolation :)

Take care all

The key is to begin making small, healthy choices to replace more unhealthy ones. Whether it be cutting back soda, taking a walk or something else... It all adds up.

Hi, I'm Amy. I'm not really new to this group, but haven't been active in about a year or more. I've been battling depression for most of my life, and have been on meds for the last few years. A lot of my depression stems from my marriage (I'm in the process of divorcing), PTSD, and being a low income single mom. The stress of those things seems to bring on cycles a lot faster. Right now I am having some pretty severe financial issues, and facing the holidays makes it worse. I need to get a grip on this for my kids sake, and I really, really need someone to talk to who won't judge me too harshly for not being able to see my way clear to ending these financial issues. One of the symptoms of depression for me is exhaustion, and a difficult time finding solutions to problems, as well as a fear of reaching out to people to solve the issues.

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals. Henry David Thoreau

My doc gave me some medication too, but I have had some insurance issues so I have to wait for the new year before I can see my doc again and get a refill or something.

Hello my name is Nicole. I'm not so new to SP but I an new to this group. I am manic depressive, general anxiety disorder and PTSD with irritability. All I have to say is thank you Prozac because I don't think I can handle stress well. The doc put me on meds for my PTSD but it only made things worse. I was keeping my husband up at night because the night terrors were so bad.

I am thankful that my husband Marco understands me and knows how to deal with me when I hit my lows. I had a miscarriage last year and if it wasn't for Marco I would be lost. I still am learning how to deal with this loss and the stress of trying to get pregnant again.

Hi, I'm Heather.
I started on sparks about 2 years ago and went through some tough times a year ago. I was diagnosed with depression and I just kind of laughed it off but I realized I do sink down and let others get the best of me.
I seem to eat off of others emotions and get dragged down.
I'm starting again with weight loss and hoping to find a way through it.

emoticon to the team, DEEVEEDUB. We're so glad you took the time to pop in and post. This is a great team to find support and motivation even when you are "lurking". It's all about finding what works for you and sticking to it. If you haven't already, you might want to set some small goals to work towards. Whether it be drinking 64 oz of water a day, exercising 10 minutes a day, cutting down the amount of soda.... Each and every small, healthy change we make adds up over the long run!

Hi- I'm a functional depressive and I've been here at Spark awhile (officially since this September 13), just sort of lurking. Today I decided that it wouldn't hurt to join a forum for some support and maybe future friendship. Hope everyone is having a good day.

emoticon to the team, BBYGURL415. We are so glad you are here. If you haven't already, try setting a couple goals to work towards like 64 oz of water a day or 10 minutes of exercise a day. When your goals become routine, add another to continue your growth. Know that whatever you do, we are here to help motivate and support you. You are NOT alone on this journey to a healthier you.
