Thank you to everyone who wished me well! I am now 2.5 months past the sgx. I am struggling to walk long distances; oddly enough I am able to bike, do the elliptical trainer and, walk on the treadmill. I haven't lost much weight yet because i have just started to ramp it up and am finding I am not hurting anymore than I already do but I am getting psyched because I am able to do more.

Imagemlover, don't be afraid to TRY anything! I had the epidural needles many times before the sgx.. and it was uncomfortable but if you get relief, it is worth it. Check around, if you haven't already done it yet, there are experts who are more patient with you than others. My guy has done wonders with me but he barks at me because I hold my breath while he gives me the injection. (That is how I handle pain and I guess it somehow is counter affective(?) By the time I needed sgx. I thought, "My pain can't get any worse and bit the bullet and did it and I am glad I have. I am not perfect and still need my pain meds but am doing better!!

My thoughts and prayers go to all who are trying to deal with chronic pain. Hang in there! emoticon

I had an L4-L5 fusion 9 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. However, I didn't do anything for about 9 months afterwards without hesitating...Is this going to hurt my back? So with only being 3 weeks out I'm going to have to say be patient. I had physical therapy prescribed post surgery and my surgeon did his final recheck I told him I was still scared of screwing up my surgery, he promptly signed me up for another 3 weeks of physical therapy.

Bottom line is slow and steady wins the race. Listen to your body, rest when your body complains and hopefully 9 months from now you will do something and remember it used to be a problem before your surgery!

Hi,
Welcome to the group! I had my first back surgery in '98, and my 4th (a 2 level fusion) in '08. I'm almost 37 now, so I understand the frustration you speak of. I was sent home with no PT and basically told, "good luck". The surgeon had little hope I'd feel better, his goal was for me to have fewer surgeries. I know my situation is rare, but I've worked up to being more active now than ever before. It takes time, a lot of work and patience, but can be well worth the effort. Good luck and stick with SparkPeople... It is a great tool!

emoticon Wishing you a speedy recovery. I hope you have complete success with the operation. I have DDD and am considering the epideral shot. I am so afraid of a needle in my back. I have sat in the waiting room and heard patients scream when they receive the shot. Then there is no guarantee that it will work. I think you are very brave to go through what you have. I am sending good vibes your way. Please keep us posted.

...I am frustrated. I am hoping this fusion has helped. I have been in agony for the last several years. Prior to this I was very athletic! I am only 44. I had to give up my chosen profession and all of my heavy duty activities. I am walking every day for a half of a mile but my mind wants to do soo much more but I know that I can't or I may harm myself more.

I am glad there is a forum to discuss back issues. I am hoping to get back to as close to my "old self" as possible. I miss my cycling and martial arts. I know that it will be different but I am still

FRUSTRATED and trying to look forward instead of the past.
