Hi Patricia,
I was diagonosed with DDD back in 2004 and continue to serve the military with chronic back pain. There are some exercises that shouldn't be done because of the compression, like ones that require jumping or rapid bending. I generally don't run, though my doctor did say in 2009 that I could jog/run until the pain becomes too much, which for me is about 1/2 mile or less. I didn't do sit-ups for a few years but the doctor ok'd me doing sit ups in 2009 as well. The main thing I've learned from the physical therapist is that core strength and leg flexibility is very important. My hamstrings get really tight when my back is the most painful, so I find myself stretching them along with my hip flexors several times a day to try alleviating some of the pain.

Welcome to SparkPeople and I hope you learn a lot and enjoy the team and the site!

Greetings! My name is Patricia and was diagnosed with DDD in my L5. Nice to know the pain wasn't my imagination. I'm going to a chiropractor 3 times a week to help relieve the compression. I want to start going back to the gym (haven't been there for a few weeks) but I'm wary of getting hurt. Hope to learn from you all how to live with this new reality.

Life is good.
