You should be receiving Medicare Insurance after two years on Social Security Benefits goes into effect. If you qualify, you may be eligible for Medicaid also. You should check into it.

well, hopefully we can get some help (since we've been paying into it so long). I assume that IF one received disability, one also receives some kind of medical coverage too?

I had the spinal stimulator surgically inserted about 6 yrs ago and it malfunctioned after 4 months and had to have it removed. Unless they have come up with better science, I wouldn't recommend it. It was a miserable 4 months too. Do your research before committing. I felt better after the fusion surgery but doubt if I'll ever feel my old self again.
Also, have you filed for disability? I did back in 2000 and was denied but then everyone said they deny all applications and that I should have appealed. I have gotten a lawyer and am persuing it again. Have you had any experience with this?
Good luck.

Found this team through another friend and hope you have some good encouragement.
I experienced a fractured lumbar spine in '99 along with 3 herniated discs while riding a wooden roller coaster...it was a freakish accident, no suits, thought it was my own fault at the time...oh well. So after surgery to remove the chipped vertebra, 7 years followed in pain and nerve damage so I've had too many to list injections, procedures and 2 more surgeries, finally fusing the lumbar and inserting 2 rods to stabilize the back. Unfortunately NOW the disc in my neck has formed a bone spur over these years and it is visibly pushing on my cervical spine causing pain and numbness. Now here's the sad part...my husband and I split 2-1/2 yrs ago, I got nothing in the divorce (after 23 yrs) since he had lost everything in a nasty termination of his career. I moved myself across the country from CA to SC to live with my youngest son who lives here. I lost 2 jobs in the 2 yrs here, finished out the unemployment and finally found a part time job that pays 1/3 what I made as a nurse back in CA. no insurance and a wonderful son who has been supporting me all this time...how will I ever repay him? Anyway, I DO feel optimistic about the future and hope that I can find something to help me get some relief for my poor back and legs. Sorry to be such a bummer but that's my story (maybe I'll get it published...if anyone knows ANYONE in publishing, please let me know).
Namaste.
