How did they do your fusion? My surgeon suggested I have my 2 level fusion done in the Anterior method, which allowed for more nerve space due to the better angle. Took about 6 months to really see the difference and it has been life changing for me. This was my 4th surgery (3 laminectomy/diskectomies), so I was pretty much done with it after 11 years of problems.

Walking was the biggest help post surgically. I had to work up to this very slowly... took months to get over a mile. Ive worked up to an hour of cardio daily, which is amazing for me.

Ive been able to lose 46 lbs since my surgery in June 2008 and that really helps the back as well as my arthritis. Tracking your calories and doing as much movement as tolerated is really the only way Ive found to combat the medication issue.

Depression can really affect your weight, so Ive been there, done that when it comes to weight gain. Chronic pain can be extremely depressing so dont hesitate to see if your doc can get you into a pain management and depression management program. Best of luck to you. Dont hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

hello,

i've had back and leg pain for over 10 years. had many injections, 2 laminectomies, and a fusion on my l5-s1 almost 3 years ago. still in pain, but they can't find a reason. i know i need to loose weight about 30lbs. i would love to get some ideas of exersises that would not cause me to be with days of pain and still get cardio in. also, how do we deal with the pain meds that cause weight gain?
