Hi Kimmybshaw,

Good luck with the surgery. After trying everything else for 15 years (3 herniated discs), I ended up getting a surgery on one of the discs at the end of last year. I am still in my recovery period, but I am doing well. I was able to walk a couple of hours after the surgery, but I've been very careful since.

My family and husband have been great during this time. My husband has been doing everything around the house. He really was doing everything especially during the first month. I started to do more and more every week, but I have to say it would be harder to recover without my family.

I'm sure your doctor told you that everyone's back is different. So, I wish you best of luck and hope you will have a speedy recovery if you decide to get the surgery.

Angie

All I can say is that anything will be an improvement from my current condition. I have two young children (1 & 4) and it saddens me that I am unable to play with them. I know I will need time to heal and that my back will never be 100%, but again, anything will be better than what I am experiencing

There are many variations to response and part of it depends on what is causing the problem and how long it has been there. If they can get all of the herniated material and there isn't a lot of scarring then you would expect good results. My problem was more bone than disc and I had very good results with surgery. However, my recovery took a lot longer than I was mentally prepared for - it took me at least a year before I "trusted" my back again and wasn't afraid to try things. Focus on small increments of improvement and don't overdo exercises - build up very gradually.

Hi I had a Lametomy and a shaved disc L5-S1 back in 2006 I thought it would give me my life back, But it actually felt better for a while then Arthritis got worse anytime you cut into your back you will always have pain. Because u are cutting through bone muscle nerves and nerve fibers. Bone usually gets arthritis, nerves has pain signals. That is why once you screw up your back. It changes your life. emoticon

Hi and welcome! I've never had surgery, but I wish you the best!

Hi everyone,

I just read an article on CNN.com about the whole sparkspeople.com. I'm a 32 year old mom, wife, and HS teacher. I've suffered from chronic back pain and sciatica since 2006. I finally have decided to have the sugery (laminotomy and shaved disc) on March 8th. Any words of advice?

I'm so tired of not having my life because of the pain. I am really hoping, and all of my doctors are entirely optimistic, that I will regain a "normal" life again.

Glad to be part of a larger group and I look forward to interacting with everyone! :-)
