You will be on it before you know it. It's been almost 5 years for me and there has been ups and downs, but since getting to work again and eating better, I feel great!

Cookies4Monster,

Yes, I actually have a professional fitted bike. However, I am no where near that yet because of my back. I am building up slowly and walking about 5-10 minutes only. I am working with a physical therapist, so I hope to be able to get back on a bike one day :-)

Thanks for the suggestion!!

Angie

I wanted to suggest to you to get fit for a bike at a professional store and I think that you may be able to find a bike that would meet your needs and not hurt your back. Good luck!

Hello Cookies4Monster :-)

Wow, that's amazing!! I don't take any medication either, since the surgery. It's really difficult for me to take even a multivitamin :-D

So far, I have gained 30 lbs. I hope to learn from you how you shed your lbs and got yourself back to the point of running 5K! I used to play tennis (3 hours daily) and bike. Right now, I can walk, but it's not as fun as tennis or bike though :-P

I have had back pain for about 5 years. I had surgery in 05 to relieve some pressure off of the discs in my lower back. I gained about 45 lbs during the whole process. I take no medications, I see a chiropractor and I am training for a 5k and then a marathon! I feel like if I can get some of the weight off and strengthen my core muscles, I will feel a lot better

Hello Overweight (interesting username :-))

I know what you meant about getting use to the pain. I suppressed a lot of pain myself, and I didn't know this until after the surgery :-)

I'm sorry to hear about your pain too. Did the surgery help you?

I hope your pain has eased up some. I hurt my back in 2005 at work and I am now on disability. I tried PT and took shots (one time) to help but it didn't. I had surgery to get the disc off the nerves to my right leg but the damage was already done. I take 2 kind of pain pills, Zoloft, and a sleeping pill. I think after a while you get use to some pain.

Hi AA! I finally gave up in October of 2008 and asked my doc for an antidepressant. His attitude was like "Finally!". I'd had bad experiences with them in the past, and really didn't think I could find one that worked for me. Thank heavens I was wrong. My doc put me on lexapro because it's not supposed to cause weight gain. Eventually I switched to a generic to save money, but I'm doing sooo much better.

It's not perfect. At times the pain does get me down, but it's not long before I'm ready to get back to it. I'm definitely frustrated now with a pulled pirformis muscle. So, I'm taking it easy and trying not to grind my teeth or tear my hair out. At my age it's getting pretty thin. :) I've been with SP since 10/08 and in that time I've learned to be patient. I know this is the journey of a lifetime and I'll always have struggles. I don't think I could do this without my Spark Friends. Bless you all!

Hello SLF1967,

I'm sorry to hear about the car accident, but I am also glad to hear that the epidural shots worked for you. Are you going for the third one?

The epidural shot worked for 2 days for me, but the pain of the shot lasted a lot longer :-O I still have a sharp pain from it once in a while.

I wish you the best of luck and hope that you will soon be pain free.

Thank you for the warm welcome!! I'll keep my chin up and keep putting one foot in front of another, too (walking) :-)

Thank you for the warm wish :-)

35 years! Wow, and I am sorry to hear that!! I see that you lost weight even though you have pain. How did you do that? I've been doing nothing but gaining for the last 15 years :-( Well, I lost 12 lbs after the surgery but gained 7 back. I really want to do more but frustrated with the pain and inability to do more.

Any tip in dealing with frustration? You are inspiring me :-)

Welcome!
I'm new too, just joined in January. I've been having back problems since a car accident in July of 2009. I had two epidural steroid injections, first one didn't work, second one actually is. since it reduced the pain, i was able to start physical therapy last week. the "McKenzie" program. It's really working which is great. The pain isn't gone, but it doesn't feel like someone is stabbing me in the back with a hot knife anymore! This is good! Anyway, welcome to the group, keep your chin up!

I've been dealing with back issues for 35 years. I have good weeks and bad, but must keep going. With help from spark friends, I am slowly losing weight and getting more fit despite the setbacks. Good luck to you!

Hello all,

I'm new here. I have lower back problems for 15 years now. With advanced technology, I recently just had one of the newest less invasive surgery, hoping that it will help with one of the issues that I have in my lower back. However, I am starting to have pain in another area (mid back) because my body is trying to compensate for one of the issues in the lower back.

However, I am still optimistic that keep moving around will help me deal with my pain. So far, I have less pain in my lower back since the surgery. However, I am having a tough time getting myself to do more. I can walk for about 5-10 minutes and sit for 20-30 minutes at a time right now.

Most days, I am optimistic but I am still very much frustrated with my situation (pain is hurting my work). Last year was a really bad year for me. I had to go on medical leave from work. Right now, my job is hanging on a thread. I hope to return next week, but my doctor has to sign off first.

Well, I recently re-joined SP, and I found this group. So, I thought I would join this group hoping that I can help others and let others help me at the same time.

Please feel free to welcome me into your group (LOL). I'm looking forward to hearing more about you in this group :-)
