DEKA2010,
As you can see lots of ideas and advice.

Sugar is a complicated molecule, and one can compare its arrangement of atoms to say your right hand. In a mirror your right hand looks like a left hand. Sucralose is the same as sugar, same molecules but arranged in the left handed version.

Organic chemistry on earth is right handed. So although Sucralose (left handed) tastes sweet your body can't digest it. Sounds like a miracle you should take advantage of. A friend of mine won't touch the stuff because it is made in a lab and she has her doubts on unknown side effects. I'm on the fence about it. However Splenda packages Sucralose with a bulking agent that is essentially sugar. I've tested Splenda on myself with blood sugar strips. My blood sugar went through the roof.

I now use stevia.

Another point about those "net carbs": the Atkins bars probably deducted sugar alcohols as if they don't count, but they actually DO raise insulin levels in some people. So for those folks, the nets carbs are probably more in the range of 13 or 14 - still low for a candy bar, but too high for induction.

In addition, many sugar alcohols don't agree with people's intestines, particularly in large amounts, and can cause really painful bloating. (Your intestinal flora have a FEAST on that stuff.) Never eat more than one bar per day.

The bars can be real day-savers in a pinch, but as someone below said, if it's in your bag it's too easy to eat it when you really don't need it.

Welcome! The SparkPeople tracker can be made to show net carbs. Go to the "My Nutrition" page. Click on "track more nutrients". Should take you to a page showing what you are tracking, and you 'll need to click something like "more nutrients to track" and select "Carbs (for low-carb diet)"

You'll see the full rundown when you do the daily nutrition report. Always sanity check the entries in that column. Just like it can take a while to find a saved food that has all the nutrients entered correctly, sometimes someone has messed up the net carb column.

It is great to know that you felt the impact on your sweet tooth immediately. Now stop eating the Atkins bars; they will screw this all up for you. As a former sweet and carby nibbler, I can tell you this is just the right time to find unsweet stuff that you LOVE eating. Cheddar, pickles, olives, meats, brie, deviled eggs. Be happy, crazy happy with your food choices. An Atkins bar in the purse tends to be consumed whether you're hungry or not.

I dialed back on any sweet substitutions during induction and the payoff was that suddenly stevia tasted acceptable as a sweetener. I was not anti-artificial prior to my LC life, but I see the benefit in weight loss by avoiding aspartame, sucralose, and the junky sugar alcohols (like malitol) almost all of the time.

Subject: net carbs

DEKA2010,
I'd have to read the label on what you ate. You didn't necessarily blow it. Fibre is something you need in your food to keep things moving. Technically, due to chemical structure fibre is a carb, but you don't digest it, it is inert and just goes through you.

So fibre is listed under carbs on food labels. Net carbs are those left after you subtract out the fibre, they are the ones that are digestible and would impact blood sugar and insulin.

So if you ate something with 20 grams of carbs, but only 2 net carbs, then that was 18 grams of fibre, and a mere 2 that have food value, very low. A lot of fibre. So no, it doesn't look like you blew anything. I found a web link to a similar Atkins bar, and it looks like it is really mostly fibre.

As you're detoxing from sugar and starch don't be afraid to go "over" on calories as long as you're OK on carbs. You can cut back after a week or so when you're feeling a little less addicted. Keep low carb snacks handy and fill up on them in place of the sweet treats.

It's a little tough on induction levels, but check out Linda's Low Carb recipes. She actually marks all the induction-friendly recipes and a lot of them are very good.

Thanks for the welcome all.
It started out so easy today, then went downhill.
Hungry and cranky.
I had two Atkins caramel chocolate peanut bars. Didn't look at the full nutritional info to see that the TOTAL carbs was 20, net carbs 2.
Ugh, I think I blew it.

Tomorrow is another day though. I WILL get through it!

Hi and welcome!

Remember your words the first time you have to stare down a serving of Death By Chocolate: "I have a horrible sweet tooth and just after one day I feel satisfied and NOT craving sugar." LOL! Remind yourself that sugar is not your friend, though it tries to sweet talk you every time!

The SparkPeople tracker is not very low carb friendly so most of us just set up our own goals. There is a really good "keto-calculator" here:

keto-calculator.ankerl.com

that will give you a very precise idea of the macronutrient and calorie levels you should be shooting for.

If you start thinking of Atkins as a lifestyle and way of eating rather than a diet you'll be set for life.

I also recommend Linda's Low Carb recipe site for starters. They're mostly basic recipes but I like how she reviews them and discusses her tweaks and adjustments:

Hi all,
Glad to have found the LLC page! All I can say is I'm excited to try Atkins finally. I have a horrible sweet tooth and just after one day I feel satisfied and NOT craving sugar. That's huge for me.

I do have a couple of questions though and I've been perusing this board to find answers but haven't so far. Hopefully someone here can help me.

How do you set up your tracker? I have to put in calories for a daily goal and with Atkins I'm not sure what to put. Before, I was at 1200 - 1500 but I can see how easy it is to go over those numbers. Should I be trying to stay within the calories recommended, or can I go over?
Hopefully someone here can help me.
Glad to be in this group.
