Hi, My name is Marcia and I am pre-diabetic (I hope it's OK if I joined this group even thought I'm not totally diabetic). I am 64 and have been overweight a good portion of my life. I am trying to lose weight and get more active. I had back surgery (fusion) and it wasn't the best decision of my life. I have pain when I stand still for more than 5 minutes and sciatic pain a good portion of the time. These are just additional challenges to me, I realize, but I won't let them get in my way. Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hello and I hope everyone has a blessed day.

Marcia

Hi all ! I joined the challenge in hopes of cleaning up my act a little. I was diagnosed about 13 years I have managed fairly well but I could use some tightening up. My last A1C was 6.5 - not bad but not exceptionally good either. I've lost about 60 pounds and stalled so I need to get moving in the right direction again. So that's an overview of my goals and reasons for joining this team.

Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. No one was there.

I joined spark several years ago, then never logged on. This year I have become more serious about controlling my diabetes. My A1C went up over 9 for the first time and I could not figure out why. It has been up for almost a year now so I have been keeping a food log and trying to remember my insulin and meds all the time. My dad died 10 years ago, heart complications from diabetes. My paternal uncle had his leg amputated this year from an infection which would not heal because of his diabetes. I have several chronic health problems probably worsened by my diabetes. I have actually lost about 30 pounds this year. A lot of this I have to admit is due to adding Victoza to my medications. I was on Byetta previously but the Victoza somehow just cut my appetite for the first time in my memory. When I forget to take it for several days I find myself binging.

I was diagnosed about 2 months ago and told by my Dr, that there is a chance I can get off meds if I lose wgt. I'm currently taking Metformin, also have hbp.

I am definitely an apple shaped woman, add in slightly high cholesterol and I feel like a ticking timebomb-lol I think that also meets the criteria for metabolic syndrome.

Time to face reality and start taking care of myself.

Hi! I am 39 years old and have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and PCOS. I have NOT been diagnosed with diabetes or as being pre-diabetic; however, PCOS is (and this was new to me today in spite of being diagnosed over 15 years ago!) is insulin related. I felt that your experiences and knowledge could be helpful as I embark on making some "life-corrections". Thanks for your support! emoticon

Hi, I'm Susan and I have been a Type 1 diabetic since age 15. I'll be 50 in a few months. I've been on SP since Oct. 2010. I take 2 or more shots of insulin a day as well as a pill due to my insulin resistance. My diabetes is well controlled. I am worreid about this challenge as I am not very strong in the exercise department. I do walk on a treadmil 5-6 days a week for 1.5 miles a day. I walk it in 41 minutes. I am thiknking of bringing in my exercise bike and adding that to my exercise regimen. I just need to find room for it!

I lost it I looked to food to help me. Well I am now back to that weight I was then and my BG was 131 when I saw my doctor the other day. She just looked at me and said " you know what you need to do I do not need to tell you". and she was right. So she told me about this site. and gave me some info. to read and now I am getting my life back on track. I have started at Curves too. I want to show my son I can look good and be there for him.

Welcome to the new people. It sounds like you have some challenges to deal with, as I do, and are doing the best you can with what you can control. I look forward to getting to know you better. I have many things in common with some of you and hope we can encourage each other along the way. Have a blessed day.

Hi, My name is Holly, I'm 27 and I've been on spark people for a few years. I was diagnosed as a diabetic (type 2) in 2007 and have lost around 50 pounds so far, though at one point I was at 80 pounds lost.

I was doing well until I lost my insurance and my blood sugar went crazy. I can't afford a doctor and my county doesn't have any programs for me. The good news is I'm moving so I can get into a doctor after 2 years without being able to go.

I have been keeping track of my sugar and have been able to get it down to okay levels again and I want to get started losing weight again. Looking forward to talking with all of you and hopefully learning a few things as well.

Hello my name is Anita and I have Type 2 Diabetes but I am insulin dependent. I have been diabetic for about 10 years. I become diabetic after having a kidney transplant in 2000. I went into rejection with my kidney about 2 years ago and I was put on dialysis for about 17 months. I just received another transplant in March 2011. And while I was on dialysis I had no problems at all with my diabetes. Two weeks after the transplant my diabetes returned with a vengence. So I am currently taking Lantus,Humalog and Victoza and about 10-12 other meds for my transplant. I whine about taking so many meds but I know that I am blessed because the only other option is being on dialysis until your body shuts down and you die. I try to maintain a positive attitude about my health which I believe will help me with this challenge. emoticon

Hi, I was diagnosed with t2 diabetes in 1999. I started out doing really well with managing it but in the last of years I have really fallen off. I need to control by bs levels and weight a lot better than I currently do. I actually joined this challenge a while back but did not follow through. Now I'm back and determined to take control back over my diabetes. I do not want to do dialysis or deal with any complication I can prevent. So I here to get support and give support.

Hi, I've been diabetic since 1998 and my diabetes is very poorly controlled. I take 7 shots of insulin a day. At one time, I was on 11 shots a day. I am on several medicines that make me gain weight and make it very hard to lose. I consider this a fresh start and am very determined that I will lose it this time. There are so many helpful tools. I have tried everything and am willing to work at it, but my doctor says I must take the medicine and it won't let me lose the weight and I won't accept that. Both my sisters loved Spark People so I will give it a try. I hope I can encourage others on their journey and get encouragement at the same time. I have about 80 lbs. to lose.

I've been a diabetic for almost two years and I want to be healthier. I never really took my health as serious as i should have but now i am on track to becoming a healthier, better me!

To Minalicious, a few months before i was diagnosed diabetic i was told i was pre diabetic, but i did not take the opportunity to lose weight, eat right and exercise~please do whatever it takes for you NOT to become diabetic. Make the necessary lifestyle changes now, YOU CAN DO IT!!

Hi everyone, I am new to the group. I have been prediabetic for a while, and on medication, but recently my A1C went back up and the doctor wanted to put me on another medication. Instead of this I asked if I could have 3 months to change my diet and bring it down naturally. He agreed and now I am here doing this challenge. I think this has finally sunk in and I realize that I have to do this, and I really can't do it on my own.

Hello, I'm Yolanda. I was just diagnosed as pre-diabetic last week. I have lost a father and a brother to complications to diabetes in the last 2 year. I have been working out the past month to get into the habit of exercise and started last week eating better. I watching my carbs and lowering my fat content. I was doing weight watchers but I have actually lost more weight when I stopped and made going to the gym a priority. Spark is the best place for me now and I motivated and ready to reverse that diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2002...now they think I'm closer to Type 1. Doesn't change much - still on insulin and need to lose weight. I've had success with the Eat to Live plan over the last year and now need to add a spark to my exercise routine. Here for nudges and reminders...and to kick Diabetes out of my life!

Hi, my name is Robin. I am a 47 soon to be 48 yearold woman and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 2 years ago. That was when I had a minor heart attack, that lead me to losing almost a 100 lbs. I am on insulin and metformin. The reason I am here is because I became desperate. Yes, I lost the 100 lbs but I have started gaining it back. So far I have gained back 30 lbs, and I'm scared. I really needed a boost or we can say a "spark". Anyway I decided to google free weightloss programs and it lead me here. I've been tracking my food and exercise on here for 3 days and have lost 2 lbs. I am a waitress so I am around food all day, but that's not the problem. The problem is when I'm home alone and bored. I don't want to gain the weight back and i certainly don't want to end up in the hospital again. So here I am, asking for any help or advice anyone has to give me. I've been reading posts and articles and they have been very helpful. I look forward to following through with this and learning more about the people that are on the same journey. Gook luck to everyone.

Hey guys!!

Well I'm Elizabeth. I'm 32 yrs old and a wife and mother of 5. I am extremely obese and have about 150lbs to lose to get to a healthy weight. It has been yrs since I have been to a dr, mostly in part because I am scared to death of what they will say. Mainly that I am diabetic. My mother had diabetes. She ignored it for many yrs. She was also extremely obese! In the past 6 months, my mom passed away from kidney failure from complications of diabetes. However, that's not when I lost her. My mom had to have a portion of her foot amputated in 2002. From there it went to her right leg being amputated from the knee down. She refused to do rehab or use her prosthetic. She had to live in a nursing home for the last 8 yrs of her life, because she absolutely refused to do anything for herself. She would not use the bathroom, although she was perfectly capable to if she had done rehab. She sat in a wheelchair, in a nursing home all day every day. I would try to get her to get out and go shopping with me and my kids, or have her over for dinners and she refused. Especially in the past 2 yrs when she wouldn't even come over for holidays anymore. My kids and I miss her terribly, esp my oldest daughter whom my mom helped me raise for 7 yrs when I had her at 16 yrs old.

I get so mad at her sometimes that she didn't take better care of herself. That she let this disease take control over her and left me at such a young age. She was only 62 when she passed.

I absolutely will not let that happen to me. It's my motivating force behind losing weight. I do not want to have my leg amputated. I don't want to live in a nursing home at 50 yrs old. I never want to leave my kids behind, when I can control certain things like losing weight and exercise.

So that's me!! That's why I need to be a part of this Team. I have my first dr appt Monday where I will have some results.

Hi, i'm MIpsy and i just joined on july 2nd.

I'm here because i have type 2 diabetes and i need to lose weight.

I have lost 10 pounds since joining, but i believe it's because it has been so hot here that i sweated most of it out and drank water constantly.

I hope that i can keep it off.

i don't have daily access to a computer, so i'm finding it hard to keep track of my information.

Hi, my name is Carlene and I just joined this team. I had been diagnoised with being pre-diabetic. My eating was awful. No exercise. In the past 4 months I have lost weight, but not worked on what I was eating, just getting the numbers in. My goal is to eat very healthy and balanced meals. I think my weight is stuck because I am still not eating properly for my body. Here, I hope to gain knowledge in how to do that. My husband is also pre-diabetic and his doctor is concerned as I am. I very anxious to get started!!!

Hi team,

I read all of your posts, at least on this page and sure feel I am in the right place.

I just found I have type 2 diabetes. I have been a member at Sparks for a long, long time and have lost weight. But, watching calories, fat grams and sodium is different from knowing how to eat properly with diabetes and watching the carbs. The way I was eating, although good to lose was not exactly the way I need to eat to get A1C down. Sigh!

So, here's to us all, let's get going and get the numbers down.

God bless,

Ammey

I'm 25 years old and was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I refuse to let something like this prevent me from outliving my wife, and I don't want my kids to deal with their dad dying at 50. I don't have my full physical until the 19th, but it's time for me to get my act together -now-, and my family is the perfect motivator to keep me dedicated.

If I just get on Spark People EVERY DAY, I know I will have lots of support and encouragement. I look forward to working with everyone else on the team to meet all of our goals.

Hi, I'm Kelly. I've been T2 Diabetic for a dozen or so years. It's only been the past 3-4 that I've taken my disease in hand and worked on control. Right now, I am on a good food and exercise plan and would love to share in this challenge.

Hello I have been diabetic for about ten years now. My success in dealing with it has been uneven sometimes good and sometimes not so good. I am looking forward to this challenge giving me a jump start to get back on the good side.

Hi Everyone,

I've been a diabetic for over 10 years now, take oral meds and started on insulin a little over a year ago. I think I'm eating all right (hey, no one's perfect), but my numbers are still off. I'm sure my doctor thinks I'm sitting around eating potato chips all day. I've got to get back on the wagon and start exercising again. When I saw this challenge this morning on Facebook, I thought it might be the motivation I need.

Time to get back on the scale and to Wii Fit! Wish me luck!!

Hi! I'm Melissa and I've been diagnosed as Pre-Diabetic. Since then, I have been exercising and losing weight. So far I've lost 31lbs using both SP and Weight Watchers. I can no longer afford Weight Watchers so I'm totally relying on SP. This challenge is what I need to help keep me on track. My father was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 7 years ago, and I have a greater chance of developing it. I want to reverse that.

I am 59 and have been unemployed over two years now (still looking for a full time job). In my early 50's I was on a drug that caused massive weight gain--a side effect of the drug--and gained 80 lbs over a four-year period of time until I finally talked the doctor into taking me off of it. My weight gain stopped but I've struggled with getting this weight off ever since. Before that time, I had spent most of my adult years battling 20-30 lbs (up and down like a yo yo). While I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, my mother died from complications of diabetes at the age of 54 (over 28 years ago) and my younger brother was recently diagnosed with it (he is 55). My weight is way too high and my own eating habits leave a lot to be desired, so when I saw this challenge mentioned on Facebook, I decided to sign up for it. My ultimate goal is to get my weight down to a healthy level and get the junk out of my food choices, and to not be diagnosed with diabetes at some future point in time.

Hello there! My name is Amy and I have been in and out of Spark People for the last 6 months or so, but have been realizing that I just need to be serious about 1 to 2 goals and not let all of the information, etc get me overwhelmed.

I am not currently diabetic or on any medication, but I am very likely prediabetic, so I do not want to wait for the diagnosis to take care of my health. Also, when I limited sugar and simple carbs, I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks and felt amazing, so I think it is a good lifestyle for me anyways.

All the best to you!

Hi all

Seems like a good time to start this. I had a bad reaction to metformin a few months ago. So we stopped it for 2 months and although with diet and exercise I managed to bring my A!C down, it is still too high with an A1C of 7.5. So Doctor had me start glipizide yesterday. She is hoping that as I continue healthy eating and exercise we can see a dramatic difference in 3 months.

I am going to start AND COMPLETE this challenge to help stay on track.

Looking forward to a healthy journey. And praying no adverse reactions to this medication.

Bright Blessings
Sue

My name is Ana from Orlando, Florida. I am type 2 diabetic and have been for 16 years now. My glucose levels usually fluctuate from 150-250. I added exercise and diet in order to control my glucose levels. I joined Sparkpeople about a year ago, since then I have lost some weight, but need to loose more. I have noticed that when I exercise, my glucose levels decreases to a healthy range( on the 100's). My problem is to stay motivated long enough to accomplish my goals! I'm subscribing to this challenge to help with the motivation I need to reach my goals of staying healthy and living a longer life. emoticon

Hi, I'm Theresa of Alabama. Was on SparkPeople a few years (2008) back lost most of the weight I wanted to lose at the time. Kept it off for a couple of years then unexpected things in life happened and it started creeping backup, in fact did not even pay attention to it until last Monday I weighed and could not believe I had gained it all back plus a few more. I want to get back down to what I was plus reach the goal I never made. I did learn something about myself along the way I am stronger than I thought. I can make my goal.

emoticon Hi all! My name is Babs and I'm almost 50 years old. Half a century...ick...but I'm hoping to find some good health in my 50's that I lost in my 40's. I think I'm finally able to embrace my diabetes so I live with it instead of living in denial of it. Two months ago I ended up in the ER with abdominal pain and my blood glucose then was 500, that was a turning point for me. I made an appointment with my doctor and started insulin and for the first time in years I'm not afraid of testing my blood glucose because it's finally where it needs to be...around 100. I'm an asthmatic who is never off steroids so it's been a battle to get my blood glucose levels where they need to be but...woo hoo....it's happened. So why join now? Because it's so easy to fall back into that denial and ice cream trucks are everywhere so I need some motivation....some accountability...an occasional kick in the rear....others who know the challenges of this disease....and even the blessings of this disease. I look forward to meeting everyone and to rejoicing in your triumphs while enjoying a few of my own. emoticon
