Hey Everybody,
My name is Joe and my wife (Roxanne) and I have been enjoying the SparkPeople experience since 2/26/2011 and have really enjoyed learning our new lifestyle and our jorney to a happier and healthier body. We have learned alot and are now going to start the training for the 5K walk/jog. We have been walking 30min/2.13miles a day sometimes 2x, and are ready to amp it up some so we do not get bored. We did buy a treadmill, home gym and an exercise bike, not at the same time but we did get them. Roxanne is a Nurse and we bought a pedometer and she wore it for a week and she was averaging 4miles in an 8hr shift then coming home and walking on the treadmill. So Roxanne uses the treadmill more than me and has been doing the first program exercise for a couple of weeks and on her days off walking with me outside. I started the 5K training this morning, I am not a stranger to exercising but it has bee awhile, I played football and other sports for many many years. but time and age caught up to me. I did my 4min walking then started my 1min jog and it felt like my shoe laces where tied together and my legs forgot how to move that fast. Funny Huh!! But the second minute and the third got a little easier until my leg cramped up in rebelling the activity. I only like 3/4mile to get back home so I walk sloooowly back home. It is only the first day so I know it will get better but I think I may use the treadmill tomorrow.
Everybody just keep on keeping on and doing it One Day and One Step at a Time then before we know it we will be at our goals making new ones.

Hi Outdoorgirl66....As one 66 year old to another....Welcome aboard! I have some knee problems that tell me not to run....but I am trying to do it anyway. I have to admit that I am truly blessed in that I don't have any health problems (heart, etc.) that I have to deal with. I am happy that you are doing what you can. A lot of people would use their health issues as excuses...you just go to show that a little effort can go a long way! I'm looking forward to reading more about your adventures. emoticon

I am still fairly new to SparkPeople (LOVE it), and so I didn't realize I needed to add the fitness plan to my activity tracker....but I have been working toward the virtual 5k for a few weeks now. Got it added, so my minutes of fitness will start adding toward the team goal. In fact, last night I met with my bestie from college--we used to run together way back in the stone age--and she wants to start doing 5k's, too!! So exciting. I told her about SparkPeople, and now we're in the process of finding out if there are any 5k's we'd like to join together. It's so great to have someone to train with, to help keep each other motivated, and to spend time together outside of our own small circle of work and family.

In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.

Hi everyone! I'm new to SP but love everything about it so far. I got addicted to jogging in college, but that was years ago. I've put on a lot of weight since then, but miss the feeling of pride and accomplishment from being able to complete a full mile without stopping or slowing down. I am signed up for a 5K in May. I've done these before, but always at a walk/jog pace. This year I want to jog the whole way through. Each night I walk at a brisk pace on the treadmill for 30-40 minutes, but I know I have to step it up soon if I'm going to be ready. All this eating right and regular exercise is pretty new to me. :D

Greetings to all of you enthusiastic adventurers! I think it is an adventure to be doing this!!! I am 50 something and tend to give time for everyone else (4 kids, hubby and cat) so that my own fitness suffers as does my mental stability(LOL! )... I have always wanted to do something like this but need to go easy, as many of you have. My knees and hips are starting to give me problems. We live in the country-a bonus! I also love my bike.

I have always wanted to be a runner, but at 262lbs on my little 5'7" frame, running isn't so good on my joints. So i'm doing the walk/jog program to hopefully get me into the running a bit w/o overdoing it, and hope to shed some pounds to make running in the future that much easier! I just got new orthodics for my running shoes, (i have a weak toe that cuases me to get mini-stress fractures) so i'll be taking it gradual! so excited though!

My name is Janine, live in Pittsburgh, PA and a mother of a 13 year old girl. I stumbled across this team. I started an exercise program in January of this year. I have been thinking about getting a running program in place, wasn't really sure what to do. After reading the program, it sounds easy. One thing, I joined today, but think I should leave the team and start back on Sunday. I didn't exercise today because where I live well we had hail, thunder, lightening and severe wind today. Well looking forward to giving this team a go.. wish me luck.

Hi everybody,

I'm from Seattle, and recently have started to manage my weight with energy balance approach. Going from obese to overweight makes me feel great, and am looking forward to continue the trend to get to normal from overweight.

I started to walk everyday, and hopefully to increase the distance to 5K with you guys' help ...

Trying this out when I go back to the gym tomorrow. Once I complete this, the next 5 weeks are going to be the next level up. I want to become a good runner. I used to be, in middle school, I was on the Cross Country Team.

Hello,

I was searching for a 5k training program outside of Sparkpeople when I realized I hadn't looked here yet (I've been a member for a few months). This team is just what I was looking for; and a wonderful tracking system and support team to go along with it!
Since my thighs are now sharing the same space again, I decided it was time to get back into walk/jogging again. I am excited about it and plan to begin tomorrow, and with the grace of will power I hope to do jog a complete 5k for the first time.

Thankyou INDIANABETTY for your welcome.
To date I had been doing my short walks and also using the treadmill. Today I bit the bullet and decided to do my long walk, which is quite a challenge as a walk. But today I walked & jogged it, mapped out it is 5.58km. I managed to knock 15minutes off my time of when I just walk it, I did it in 61 minutes and burnt 502 calories, that is 100 calories more than when I just walk it. This walk is quite hilly and I am sure there is no downside to those hills only up, well that is the way it seems!!. So I still have a few more weeks before do my virtual race so my first goal is to do this route in under 60 minutes and then who knows by the end of this what time I will be able to do it in emoticon emoticon emoticon

HI everyone! I once signed up for C25K and started working on that but ran into holidays and got busy and well it got put on backburner to say. I also felt like I needed to drop a little more weight before I started which I have. So I thought I would give this a try. I dont know how much running I can do but I am going to start and see how far I can get. I am not much on running outside so will probably use my treadmill at home to do it. I plan on doing the virtual 5K.

Officially here again.
Hi all, my name is Malin and I live in Sweden.
I joined this team last week, but then I got a really bad cold. Now I'm getting better, so tomorrow I will sneak start by walking 5K indoor on a treadmill.

The initial goal is that I'll gradually increase my jogging until I can jog 5K.
I have a race day set which is the 9th of May, but I don't really care if I can jog the whole distance then or not. I'm avoiding setting a date for my goal since I have no clue how long it will take me, I've never done anything like this before.

Once that goal is reached, I'll increase the jogging until I can gradually start to run those 5K.
And after that, I guess next step is a half marathon? :D

Hi, guys. I've been overweight pretty much all my life and even in 6th grade gym class I hated when they timed how fast we'd run a mile...because I never ran. But I'm coming to realize that I am capable of doing more than I've ever given myself credit for and I'm looking forward to being in better shape than I've ever been in before in my life. After trying Day 1 of the program and finding out it's fun to run, I've decided to commit to gradually bringing myself "up to speed". And it's great to be here!

Hello

I'm Maruca from Switzerland. I've enjoyed running when a teenager, and not pressured to run at a certain speed in class (which was most often the case, big turnoff!) and I used to do 5K's no problem but at my own pace... I have been walking a lot (30-60 Min several time a week) and I enjoy hiking here in Switzerland and can do about 3-4hours of hiking a day... As being outside makes me happy and helps me with my downs and SAD I would like to start this programm. It will be good for my health and also clear my head (I work and study both full time). I've been running twice this week, two 5 min units and lots of walking...But I want to play it safe and have a support system on here (as I run alone)... My boyfriend wants to start to and we love walking and hiking together, maybe running is next, although each at his/her pace...

I will start again this afternoon and track it all with runkeeper... Nice to be here and pleasure to meet you all, you're inspiring!

Hi there!

I just finished the 5K Your Way Walking program, where I did my 5K in about 52 minutes. I thought I'd take things to the next level and try this training program. Looking forward to it! I've been on Spark for four months and have lost 25 pounds so far. I am 43 and live in San Jose, CA. I've enjoyed adding exercise into my program since I joined Spark - it's what has been missing in weight loss efforts in the past.

Looking forward to joining this team in progressing to a walk/jog 5K!

Sandy from California (Pacific Time)

Hi MKOLENZ...Welcome to the group. I certainly can't give you any advice since I have never done a 5K either, but I can give you encouragement. This is my first attempt to train for a 5K, and I am still hoping to find one not too far from here. I think you are on the right track when you have a mental conversation with yourself that you ARE going to do it. I am sure you will do great! Keep up the good work, and be sure and post on here to let us all know how you are doing. emoticon

Hello all!

I am new to the group, and fairly new to jogging. I started doing doing the Couch to 5k program last june until September, when work and the weather no longer cooperated with me! I now have a gym membership (that has a track!) and have been doing 2.5 miles (walk/job) between 1-3 times a week. This week I am cracking down and making it mandatory that I have to jog/walk AT LEAST 3 times a week. i'm doing the Cleveland Marathon 5k in May, and need to get my butt going!

Any tips are appreciated!

To CGEM61....I think we can all pretty well adapt it to what ever works for us. I try to jog every now and then, but mostly power walk. emoticon

Welcome all new members!

A few of you have made mention of not being able to jog for for the full minute in Week 1, or being nervous about the next week--even if you have successfully completed the previous week's plan.

I want to let ALL OF YOU know that you CAN do it! And even if you don't complete every day 100%--don't get too hung up on the numbers. Have fun and take pride in your accomplishments--no matter how large/small!

Here's a story that might help put things into perspective. I was training for my first half-marathon two years ago. About halfway through my training, I strained my left calf muscle. I was looking at my training schedule spreadsheet and I started crying! My dear, sweet hubby asked why I was crying. I said, "My calf hurts, but the spreadsheet says I have to run four miles tomorrow night!" He looked at me and calmly said, "Sweetie, put the spreadsheet DOWN!" Of course, he was right. We can't get so hung up on following EXACTLY what the plan says. A plan needs to be flexible to accommodate a lot of things--injuries, activities, unexpected things, and not being able to be "up to speed"--according to some spreadsheet!

So, long way of saying, you all can do this! Be patient with yourself and your body and enjoy your accomplishments!

I can't see why not. The training is simple and adjusting it to your individual needs seems to be a sensible move. Congratulations on taking up the challenge. I'm not a runner either and although I've completed week 1 of the training, I'm wondering if I'll be able to do next week's!

Best of luck and keep on trying - you'll get it!

emoticon I am a walker, I thought I would switch things up a bit by doing the one minute jog. I can't seem to jog for the whole minute. I also missed a day because of migraines. So can I stay with trying to do the full minute before moving on to the next week? I like the training plan it helps me stay on track. Have a great Saturday! emoticon

Hello,
My name's Iwona. From long time I wanted to start running, and I decided to start today, because it was first nice and warm day from months.

I start with "walk/jog", because when I saw "walk" program I realised that I have this from 3 years (since I went to high school). Everyday i walk on foot to school and back home (~1,5km, sometimes more if I have to step by few places on my way), and also I almost always choose to go on foot rather than take a bus. An hour of walking isn't a problem to me so I decided to skip first program :P

So, today was my first day. I hope that I will make it and by summer I'll be a good runner.

Bye!

Happy Saturday everyone! I signed up because I need to kick my routine into high gear as I will be in Yellowstone in May and I don't want to be winded walking up the trails.

I chose to do the walk/jog at first. I eventually would like to say "I'm a runner" but am going to do this in baby steps so I don't get discouraged and stop.

Good luck to everyone!
