I am also new to this forum and am excited to begin training for my second 5K race ever in May. I hope to be able to run for as much of the distance as possible and hope this program gets me there.

I just joined this group. I have my first 5K run/walk in April so I think this is a great way to start training. I don't run on a treadmill. I always feel like I am going to fall off when I do try running. I have been walking my dog for awhile now and we do jog every so often. Now I want to start jogging more so I will have to leave her at home.

I hope to be able to jog more for this race then walk. I had done a 5K walk before I started loosing weight so I feel I am better prepared and healthier then I was 5 years ago.

What is a plateau, anyway?
When you are not seeing results in weight lost, inches dropped, or improved fitness for 4-6 weeks, you have probably hit a plateau.

Hi , I am new to this program and I have been running for a while but have been having trouble with my knees and took some time off but decided to start back again slowly. I figured that this would be the best program to start with seeing that its more walking than running. I would like to progress slowly back into running and I believe that this program will help me with that.

Pr8Rmom that is great. That is what it took for me as well. I'm not an exerciser, but give me a race tho train for and I'm out there walking...I am now training for my second 1/2 marathon. Running smaller race as I go, and losing weight in the process.

Keep up the good work. Hang in there when it gets though, and yes get good shoes...

OK I am in no way a exercise person of any degree. I have in the past enjoyed somewhat the activity of walking on a treadmill or outdoors, no speed or technique involved. So my bestie decided to love me enough to kick my butt and sign us up for our very first 5K on May 5th. I am excited but nervous. I also have a child getting married in the fall and one graduating high school in May and two more at home.
Yesterday we (my bestie & I) walked briskly 3 miles and the only pain I have today are the blisters on the bottom of my feet. I need the proper shoes to do this apparently. We have made a schedule and we are going to keep etch other accountable.
Wow I can't believe I am doing this..... emoticon

Hi Everyone, my name is KT from Chicago and I have run a fair amount in the past but have yet to enter in any competition. This year I am entering in a 5k and if I get enough courage, I will also enter a Triathlon.

I have two doxies how are my children and work a lot so I don't always make the time to exercise, but am trying harder everyday.

I am excited to be a part of this program and hope to run the whole time in a 5k! EEK

Hi I am Joni from SC. I am 55 years old and started running only 2 years ago. I have always love to work out. I was always thin till I hit my late 40's. Then started really putting on the weight. Then you can guess UP & DOwn. I had a health scar and know that I need to stop! It was time to start being really! Do what was best for my body. Eat real food! Work hard at being nice to myself. Stop talking mean to myself. See the good in me!
How I have 3-5ks 1-5 mile and 1-10k under my belt. So now I am a part of a running group
"Run for God" this is my 2nd time around. My goal is to get fasted, run longer and be a better me! My next 5-k is May12th emoticon emoticon

Hi, I'm Lisa.

I ran and walked my way through a 10K 2 years ago and loved the sense of accomplishment I felt. I have never considered myself a runner or athlete (I hated gym class growing up!) however I enjoyed the race as a personal goal and found that it was a great way to motivate me to walk as I trained to complete it.

In the past 2 years however, I've fallen off the wagon, particularly during a very stressful year of teaching (my profession). Now that I'm making the decision to put my health as a priority, I signed up for a local 5K in my community for which several of my students are also training as a school 'club' for making healthy decisions.

Now I have two reasons to train for this race: Myself, and to set a good example for my students. I've made my training a priority that fits within my job as an educator.

Hi everyone,

I've just joined the group and now thinking of doing a 5K in May. I'm on a weight loss journey like all of us, but I decided I needed a goal for the exercise portion, because getting healthy sometimes is not motivator enough!

I would love to do a 5K in under 30 minutes..that's my goal for May. I'll still be quite heavy likely but I've already started running a bit on the treadmill. I set my goal for may because I'll be running inside on a treadmill until the snow/ice all melts

Looking forward to getting started

Gypsy

Hey!
I started running this summer, before being diagnosed with asthma, which set me back quite a bit. I flat out stopped exercising after spending a weekend in the hospital in October, so its been quite the process learning to re-trust my lungs. I haven't done any running since October, because it turns out my lungs really hate the cold and I don't know how to run on a treadmill, so I'm pretty much starting from square one. The past seven months flirting with running have taught me one thing: I love to run. So I'm hoping I can finally build up some endurance.

NUNZIATA43, was your curve never corrected? I was diagnosed with Scoliosis about eight years ago and had my curve corrected with physiotherapy. I still do stretches when my back gets really sore, but running has never affected my back.

Hello everyone! I am a stay at home mom of 3 boys ages 7,10 and 13 and a baby girl who will be 1 shortly. I am looking to lose around 80 pounds and am hoping this program will help to keep my focus on something other than the scale! I have been faithfully working out for a month and already my body is getting used to my exercise routine. I think this program will be a good way to keep myself challenged and hopefully I will be ready when 5k season comes around!

Hey All-

Stumbled across this team and love the info. I was a runner about 15 years ago. Had trouble with my knees - ached, weak etc. so dropped out. I have since spent much time working with a trainer and knees are great. I can even jump rope at a decent pace, now.

One of the concerns I have is my back issue. I have scoliosis and live most days with pain. Wondering if the running will affect it negatively. Anyone in my situation? I am anxious to get started. I'm going to go get fitted for some good shoes today and start with the 5-weeks-to-5-k! Thanks in advance for all your support!

Joy for the Journey!!!

Just introducing myself. I have been on and off SparkPeople for some time now. I've been a member of BabyFit since early 2007. I am a married mother of 3 boys ages 4 and under. I work full-time as an RN. I was forced to run during my time in the military, and shaved 2 minutes off my 1.5 mile run during those 4 years and even ran 5Ks for leisure. Now that my youngest is 12 weeks old and I'm done having kids I feel ready to devote myself to dropping the 32lbs I have gained. I am 5'6" 186lbs which gives me a BMI of 30.1. It's hard to believe that I am "obese" by definition. I certainly don't feel it. My goal at this point is to fit into all the clothes I can't wear anymore and more importantly to be able to wear my beautiful wedding ring again. I joined the 5K walk/jog running plan and just completed week 1. My mom and I are doing an 8K in April and although that's a little soon, there's no rule that says we have to run the entire thing.

Hello teamates - I decided to join this group, looking for motivation to get back to my active self. In the past, I was very active in competitive swimming and participating in triathlons. I've come a long way to find myself 30 pounds heavier and spending way too much time in front of the television and developing poor eating habits. So I would like to participate in a group where we can help each other be the healthier and happier people we are meant to be. My name is Carol and I am living in California.

Hello everyone! I'm Christina from California, 28. I decided to join because I'm trying to lose weight and I've been inspired by other people that this might be what I've been looking for. I'm not a runner by any means, but I'm very determined =-) Other than to lose weight I want to do this so I can officially run a 5k, that would be a huge accomplishment for me. Currently I'm on Day 1 of Week 2, so far so good. Oh by the way, I'm doing this on my treadmill, is that ok? Well here's hoping I can finish this, and the best of luck to everyone else, add me if you'd like.

Melissa from Texas here. Joined the team this morning. Haven't ran/walked in a 5k in almost 12 years. Participating in a 5k St Patty's Day themed event. I have exactly 4 weeks and I will strive to do my very best. Encouragement and support greatly appreciated.

Getting there, one day at a time.

Hey peeps!

I'm using SP on my iPad 2. It's been a great companion since I started my 60-day weight loss plan 5 days ago. Since getting back on red meat (I abstained for 3-years) and getting injured for the second time, I've gained close to 10 kilos. I had a minor tear on my MCL and hamstring, and badly sprained ankle at a futsal aka indoor soccer match which sidelined me for 3-4 months. When I returned and started playing in a minor soccer league, I pulled my hamstring.

While I'm not 100% I play futsal weekly, and the current soccer league will last the next 3-4 months. Started playing golf so I'm at the driving range once a week.

I'm currently on a low carb diet, so all advice and recommendations are welcome!

I track my progress everyday on my food intake, exercise, body measurements (body fat, weight, muscle mass, water). Comment on http://vernieman.posterous.com

Also, I plan to start running soon and was wondering if I should get a Polar watch or a Nike+ iPod device to track my miles. What are your recommendations?

Cheers!

Regards,

Vernon

Hi I have been exercising and sparking for over a year now, but I got the idea to try a 5K. I know I could walk the whole thing, but I want to try to run one. I used to do cross country running in high school (long enough ago that I'd have to add it up), we would run 3 miles in races all the time. I was never fast, but I had good endurance. I think I'm crazy, but someday I may want to run a real marathon, this is a good place to start.

Hi all! I am 44 years old and I used to run/jog a million years ago. I really used to enjoy it, but two bad knees and a lot of extra weight later, it seems a bit intimidating. I did my first walk/jog today and it went fine.

I just need a pair of good, stable, not too expensive shoes and I will be happy.

Good luck to us all!! emoticon

Hi, I'm Jerri. I am getting ready to turn 56 and this is the year to get fit.

I started a Power Up class at the Y in January. This is a high intensity, interval workout 2 days a week for 7 weeks. Next week is the final week of the first session. Due to a family crisis and being sick, I have made fifty percent of the classes. It has kicked my butt! I love the way I feel after working hard for 2 hours.

I am motivated to do a 5k in April. My daughter just completed her first 5k today in 15F weather in 37 minutes. She is my inspiration.

Hi! This is my first week! I am training for a 5km marathon in April. I am excited and scared. I'm hoping to stay motivated and get my time down. 5km is pretty darn far! Currently I have been running 1 min and walking 5 min. That was the intervals I was given by a RunClub member. I will stick with those intervals but increasing my run times by 1/2 a minute each week and decreasing my walk time to match. But I do roughly 6 sets. So far I can run a 5km in about an hour. I know that isn't too fast, but hopefully I can get my time down to about 30 min by race time!! :D

To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world!

I've hit my goal weight and was looking for something new to try. So I reckon I'll give this a go!

oh hey there! I love running, but it's hard since I have tendonitis in my knee :( I usually run for 2 or 3 days, then have to take 1-2 days off. I am motivated, though!!

What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?

Hi all, I've never been a runner but about a year and a half ago I was training for a half marathon, and I was doing really well and loving it but I stopped when my boyfriend and I broke up which I regret! I haven't gotten back into it because I do not like running on treadmills or inside, and I only really like to run outside during the summertime, but no more excuses!

Hello Spark Team. My name is Kristie. I have NEVER been a runner. I did the January Jumpstart challenge and to my disgust I only lost 1 pound. UGH!!! I decided that I need to work harder and challenge my body and mind more. I thought this would be a good place to start. I am running, not fast, but I am running! This is going to be a great start to keeping me on track to the new me!

Hi Everyone,

I'll be honest - I don't currently enjoy running. But I do enjoy losing weight. Have hit a plateau and my dr suggested running. In high school I liked track/cross country. Hoping to recapture that feeling. Figured working the plan would be a good place to start.

Hello,

I am new to posting on these boards and just joined to train my first 5k. I am really excited to begin training tonight, of course I am sure the excitement won't last long as I run out of breath. My 12 year old son has asked me to run a 5k with him in May - Race for the Cure and I couldn't say no. I can't wait to hear about everyone's success and tips.
