Hello, all :) My name's Summer, and I'm new to the turtle crew! I fall off the healthy food habits wagon a lot, which makes my progress slow. But I'm a firm believer in "fall down seven times, get up eight," so I just keep picking up and trying again. So far it -is- making a difference. "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." right? :)

Anyway, I'm 30 years old, from Alaska. I'm a student, and would like to someday be a speech therapist. I like movies, reading, and writing. I have a gym membership but haven't been in a long time. Partly because I'm shy, but mostly because I don't often have transportation to get there. I need to work on finding a way around that. Generally my exercise consists of walking, as well as "wellness" class twice a week. (Wellness is basically like Phys. Ed. in high school.)

Can't think of anything else to write, so I'll go ahead and hit send. I'm glad I found this team - seems like a great bunch of people with a smart outlook.

Summer

I am new here, and I must admit I am a bit frustrated. I have been a member for about5 months, and am down about 9lbs. I am eating better, but I think I need to be more consistent in my exercising effort. I was off to a great start, but injured my foot, so I had to come up with some alternate activities. Walking had been my favorite! Now I have a recumbent bike, which I try to do 30 minutes a day on. Sometimes I do, sometimes, I am just too tired. I am looking for some others to keep me motivated even though this weight is just TRICKLING off of me!

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”
Dr. Seuss quote

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own.
And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.”

This Spark Team looks exactly right for me. Slow is the way to go!! Healthy choices over the long run will yield the best benefits. Would I like that scale to budge downwards a little more often? Of course!! But with all the things I'm responsible for, I can't put weight loss as my #1 priority. Striving for sanity in this pressure cooker world is my main focus. I read Coach Dean Anderson's articles and blogs as often as possible, and try to take small steps towards a healthy lifestyle whenever I can. Thank you so much for having this team!! That Blakely Corwin kicked (pawed) me in this direction. (:

Hi! emoticon I'm Jessica. and I'm 20 years old.
I've struggled with weight problems since I was about 2/3 years old.
I'm currently weighing in at 344 pounds. (my highest was 383) 39 pound weight loss!
I've been a member on SP since June of 2009.
In the last year, I've been thrown off my routines with painful things. Not just my body being a pain but the murder of a friend of mine in may 2010. Along with family medical problems. and my own depression problems. But I'm ready to put things behind me and start a new journey and work through things.
=)

Guess I'd better introduce myself to everyone even though I've been lurking a few days.
My name is Vicki and I need badly to lose 55 lbs but my ultimate goal is to lose about 70 lbs.
I'm following a heart healthy plan my husbands cardioligist put him on but I'm cutting my calories down by a couple of hundred. We are trying to stay under 2000 grams of sodium a day but it's really hard. Some days we do manage it though. My hubby (BOB-N-FLA) is also on sparkpeople but only for the nutritional tracking. But I want all the added support I can get since I've lost a huge amount of weight before (in the 80's) and managed to stay slim until menopause hit. I gained 90 lbs in 5 years time and I hate it. So I'm trying hard to get the weight back off. Sodium is my #1 problem as I retain fluid badly and just recently found out I can't use any form of diuretic, as I'm allergic to something in them. So it's a struggle for me. But I'm determined to get this weight off once and for all. My main goal is to lose 55 lbs by August 20-2011. I turn 55 then so I felt it'd be fitting to drop 55 lbs by then (1 lb for each year I've been on this earth). So I can really use all the support I can get.

Oops, I just introduced myself on the other thread (why I am the slowest loser). My name is Rebecca. I am a SAHM mom to seven. Losing weight has been slow for me the past five years. I am doing well to lose 1-2 pounds a month. I am hoping to keep from allowing myself to get discouraged with the pace of this journey. emoticon

Hi Everyone,
I just joined the team. I've been enjoying the slowest loser blogs, and I am certainly a slow loser so it seems like a good fit. I've lost 18 lbs over the past 2 years with a combination of SP and weight watchers. I've gained a little during the past few months and need to get back on track. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Hi Everyone: Glad I found this team...I want to be losing slowly and changing habits so it stays off for good, but my vanity is taking a beating and I want to get out of that mindset. My parents are not old but both plagued with many health problems mostly due to excess weight and I don't want to be there in 20 years. I've lost weight quickly at 1200 calories (sparkpeople has me currently set at 1580-1880) but I felt run down and deprived and miserable the entire time. Now I feel I'm actually making better habits happen, something that's sustainable for life. Not just for six months' duration of a "diet".

Oh yeah this is the team for me! I have been doing this for fifty years and must have gained and lost hundreds. I stayed about the same in my twenties and thirties, then forties added ten pounds, and fifties added another ten. What's up with that???

It's what you learn AFTER you know it all that's important.

Dear Abitabar,
Yes, I am on the meds....and have been going up and down like a yo-yo for the last 4 months. I had thyroid cancer 3 years ago and have been on meds ever since. The generic of Synthroid, levothyroxine. My PCP just referred me to an Endo and I see them next month, after I see my PCP.

Thanks for the tip on the Diet rootbeer, I've actually tried the Pepsi MAX and liked it, just drinking tea and kool-aid and water now...no money.

And I do walk everyday when I take my son back and forth to school. His school is too close to our home for a bus to come get him, so I have to walk with him. He may be 9, but I stil walk him to school! I was just thinking of the gym because we are members of a center in our neighborhood that has a fitness room in it, and I just haven't tried it out yet. Always go to the Tech Cafe or movie theater they have. But I will get to the fitness room one day! emoticon

I do enjoy walking, just have to work up to a brisk pace!

Thanks for the tips!

RE your thyroid - didn't they put you on medication to supplement what your thyroid used to make? I had the surgery over 30 years ago and have been on the med ever since - very cheap and effective.

RE diet soda - my daughter and I like Diet A&W Root Beer the best, and she's really picky.

Re the gym - work up to walking to the gym and back. Walking is great exercise and there are no gym fees. By the time you are able to walk there and back you may decide to get a gym membership - or you might just keep walking for free.

Hi All! I agree with Mewcat, if "zero" is slow, than that's me! I joined Spark back in August after being diagnosed with high blood pressure. I haven't lost anything yet that I know of, I do not keep a scale in my house just yet. Too expensive for me right now. I am getting monthly weigh-ins at the doctor, so that helps keep me on track. I do not have a thyroid gland anymore, and that may be hurting me in losing weight. I have been walking more and eating less, but my main problem is drinking pop. I love my pop when I can afford it, but am trying to switch over to diet or lower calorie pop.

One of my goals is to make it to the gym that is close to my house one of these days, like when I get bus pass again or when I get my license. Because if I walk there, I know I will be too tired and wore out to work out!

I don't have lots of energy most days and feel like I am always tired. But, today is my 29th birthday and I want to be around for many more. I got a new boyfriend that adores me and a son and mother that love me and need me to stay around!

If "zero" is slow, then I'm THE slowest loser. Haven't lost anything yet, but I'm "slowly" changing my habits - getting more sleep (hard to do with two jobs and part-time school!), exercising every day, working on portion control, etc. Glad to be part of this team! emoticon

Hello Turtle People!

I decided to join this team because I can't seem to shed a pound! I have been REALLY at this for a month, exercising everyday, changing the way I eat, WHAT I eat. Not only am I NOT losing, but I am gaining! I only pray that it is muscle and not more dadgum fat!

So I thought I would come gather support from others who are slow losers like me! I have actually been with SparkPeople for 3 yrs or so. I've only just really become SERIOUS the last month and a half.

Even though I am not losing, I know that I am still doing something great for my body. That is the only thing that is keeping me going!

My first goal is to get from 183 to 154 by the end of the year. Yes, even through the Holiday Season! Because if I can make it through the Holidays, I can make it through ANY day! :D

Thanks for your support!

Good thinking! So true, diets don,t work! Gotta move more, and when you weight train, the scale usually goes up before it goes down. So I just use the scale once a mo. for my tracker.Yes I do have more patience now, just trying to eat clean. Cherie

Hi Fellow Turtles,

I've been on Sparkpeople for a little over a month now. I've come to realize that I Want to be the Slowest Loser. Now that I'm in my 50's I have more patience - and have been on the diet merry-go-round many times. Fast weight loss leads to gaining-it- back-plus-more for me - as for most (dare I say all of us?) in this group.

So this time I'm not using a scale. I'm eating better and getting exercise more regularly. The tracking is a necessity to keep that going. But no more Tyranny of the the Scale for me. Losing a bit or gaining a bit every week...the anticipation of seeing the number go down...the disappointment when it goes up (even when I've "been good")...I don't think it helps me in the long run.

My clothes fit better and that's one of the big goals I have anyway - that and feeling better. So I'm a Slow Loser and like it that way.

Hi!
I love the idea of being part of this team. I joined SparkPeople in who knows???? maybe June???? and slowly started trying to get myself on track. I have 30 lbs to lose and I was supposed to get it lost by Dec....Well...I have not weighed in yet since my first weigh in BC I Weigh 3 lbs MORE than when I joined. I have to get real with myself, but I keep giving myself the excuse that its OK not to weigh in until I am back down to my starting weight.

I really am a turtle....BUT I am making progress! I have walked or exercised 4 times so far this week. I have a 10 day streak going on SparkPeople logins. I have to get real with my food. I am doing OK, but obviously OK isnt good enough BC I am still holding steady at the same weight.

I am focusing on what I am doing right and working on being honest with myself. I need to do this for myself, for my kids, for my future. It might take me a while to get ther, but I will.

Hey Fellow Tortoises!
I'm Kelly and have been a member of Sparkpeople since... Oh, the dawn of time, it seems (actually, 2004)!

I turned 40 last year, accepted a challenge to learn how to run, changed... well, everything about my lifestyle... and managed to lose 49 pounds since Sept 12, 2009.

I got into quite a funk when I couldn't cross that 50 pound mark by my Sparkversary. However, with some wonderful encouragement from my Sparkfriends and some meditation about the foundations of this journey, I accepted the reality that this is now a lifestyle for me, and I'm prepared to go the distance.

I have my goal set at 150 - that's 16 more pounds for me - only because that puts me inside my "healthy" BMI range and sounds like a nice number. However, what I've really come to decide is that I'm just going to continue to live my life... 1500 calories at a time and staying active to enjoy life. Who knows where it's going to take me? If this is it... if 166 pounds is the bottom of the scale for me, so be it. Maybe it's less than 150. No idea.

What I need help with, is a day by day reminder that I've made this decision, and not to get bogged down in feeling like I'm failing if the scale isn't moving.

Looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi I am Larisa, I am with spark people more than two years now, but just added to this team. I am very slow loser so this team is perfect for me. I just desperately need to loose some weight, I just hate that I am so big and heavy, I want to be thinner. Hopefully that it will be soon.

I've been on a weight loss roller coaster for most of my adult life. Six weeks ago I rejoined Sparkpeople with a new mindset: to finally (once and for all) lose these extra pounds. I have carefully tracked and weighed my food and for the first time, in all of my weight loss efforts, I have been exercising regularly. Things were going well until now, I hit my first plateau, so the scale and I are no longer friends. This made me realize that this journey is going to take time and I refuse to give up on myself again so I have decided to join this team because slow and steady WILL win the race!

Hi i'm Monique

I live in Fulda, Germany. Married, no kids, four cats.

Love to cook, read, knit and other crafts.

I am starting a new full time job that requires different shift times, and i'm hoping that I can stick to my healthy journey and find some tricks on how to manage the different times of the job and still eat healthy and work out.
I'm still learning on my way. I am by far no expert even though I have been on my first diet when I was 9 or 10 years old. And have been on at least one every year since then till I turned 25. Then I just gave it up until I turned 30.
On March 29th 2009 I had that moment where I just turned my whole life around and dropped 25 kilos.
Now I want to drop another 15 kilos. I know I can do it.

Keep on sparkin!!!

Hello - my name is Rachel and this team definately seems like a good fit to me! I am fed up with scale expectations. I have quit so many times because of not seeing the results of my efforts. Well that didn't work out so well, so I'm just going to do what I know is healthy and let the numbers fall where they may!

As a side note, I finally stopped watching "that show" several seasons ago. I just couldn't take it anymore - there's always someone who loses 5 pounds in a week and then cry about what a failure they are and how much they let their team down because it wasn't enough. I said enough!

Don,t look at the whole amount you need to lose. I had to stop that too. I'm just doing no sugar, Eating healthy and moving more. Going for a lifestyle. Its less overwhelming. Lost 5 lbs, I was happy, took a mo. to change my metabolism. Don,t be so hard on yourself! Cherie

Hi, I'm Kelly! I'm new to the team, but not to SparkPeople. Now that I'm done with my undergrad and graduate degrees (and hopefully done moving for a couple years!) I want to lose the weight I've lost before BUT keep it off. This time, I hope I'm doing it right: Slow and steady, practice those good habits until they STICK, and keep active indoors and outdoors as much as possible!

Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.

Hi everyone! I was successful, almost, at meeting my LT goal once before using SparkPeople - over 10 months, I had lost 45 pounds. However, I had some health problems at the end of that timeframe and have since regained the weight, plus another 10 pounds.

I am feeling very overwhelmed by the idea of trying to lose this weight. It was so much work the first time around, and I cannot move as easily as I could then. So this team is very appealing. I can make a few little changes, and that's not as scary as tackling the 63 pounds that I need to lose right now.

It took me a while to change my mindset. No sugar is #1. Moving around is #2. This has to be done almost daily. These are good steps to begin with. Stay on Spark sites, so motivating! Hope this helps, Cherie

I'm a 48-(for the sixth time)-year-old woman who has been fat forever. I've had healthier periods in my life, when I've eaten better, exercised, and lost some weight, only to gain it back again. I have to stop this!

So I'm trying SparkPeople. It seems to combine all the tools I've found helpful in the past ... tracking food, tracking exercise, drinking 64+ oz water daily, and some support. And now I also get to track my glucose.

As to the rest of my life, I'm married, have a daughter who has managed to learn healthy eating in spite of her mother, and two cats. I have a job that I love working, in a social service agency.

I actually love to exercise once I get started, but have knee problems which interfere. PT appt tomorrow, so hopefully I can get started again. Conscious and healthy eating is my goal. At this point, I don't want to think about how much I need to lose; it's a daunting number.

Hello everyone my name is Thiry. I became a member of SparkPeople as a part of a class that I was taking in January 2007. I didn’t do much with it at that time but a couple years later I was watching an episode of The Doctors and they mentioned SparkPeople. I thought I am a member of that so at that time I became more active in the plan. In May of 2008 I was diagnosed with diabetes and sleep apnea. In December of 2008 I topped out at 299 pounds. I originally had my goal of reaching 175 pounds in October 2009 but didn’t make it. I have been as low as 239 but am currently about 10 pounds heavier than that. I haven’t lost anything to speak of in the last year. I have gained and lost the same 10-15 pounds over the last year. I want to lose at least another 75 pounds to reach my original goal. When I get there I will decide if I want to lose a few more or not. Needless to say I think I fit well in this “slowest loser” team.

Take care.
Thiry

My name is Robert and I have already lost a good deal of weight but I am still far from my goal. What hurts is that I worry more about my children then I do myself, which in turn takes me away from what I should be doing for me on a daily basis.

Hi everyone. New to this team but not new to spark. I've been reading the blogs from the slowest looser, and thought I'd join and see what the team was like. I've been on spark for three years now, and leader of two teams. I decided to try a new team to put some challenge back into my routine.

Hi all,

My weight loss journey definitely puts me in the slowest loser category. I weighed as much as 262 in 1998 before I made the decision to take control over my weight and my health.

I've been loosing weight really slowly over time and have long plateaus. While it can be frustrating, I'm happy to say that I've been able to keep the weight off. It's nice to find a group that's comfortable with the "slow and steady" mindset!

Welcome! I just kept saying no sugar, And do some form of exercise at least 5 days a wk. I also change my eating to more often, but clean. It took me over a mo. to lose 4 lbs! But I think its because I had to change my metabolism. I'm gonna be 59, have health problems too. But I definitly feel better. Hope this helps! Cherie
