Hello, I have been with Spark for a few years but recently had an aorta valve replaced and 2 stents put in plus currently in cardio rehab 3 days a week for 36 weeks. Decided it was time to be fully committed to my health. Found this team while browsing and felt it would help me stay on track with healthy eating and exercise. Looking forward to sharing with you all.

I'm 68 in a month. I had a stent put in yesterday in a coronary artery that was 90% blocked. I have other major health problems as well. Like diabetes and COPD. My goal is to walk around my block without fainting.

6/3/19
Ok. I should have tried harder. It's been 2 years since I had the stent put in. I had a heart attack April 2 this year. I am now doing cardio rehab twice a week. On the plus side, I've lost 25 lbs since I was here last and for the first time ever in 20 years, my blood sugar and blood pressure are stable and under control. What I need now is a support system for cardio on a daily routine. I am not dieting purposely. The weight is going down slowly due to a side effect of one of my diabetes meds and the exercise.

I joined SparkPeople to learn how to manage my life, to face the challenges of health issues associated with a chronic illness that is destroying my body. I feel that Spark People saved my sanity through education. The articles and video's, the challenge teams, tracking my food and exercise puts me back into control of how I live day to day.

I am married, have grown children (3), grand-kids(4),cats(5),and a dog. We live in Reno, Nevada and love it here. I am co-leader of “Living with Hepatitis C” and am in stage 4 of the virus. I love to laugh, form strong friendships, and to stay positive, as much as possible

Good Morning Everyone! My name is Linda and I have a family history of heart disease. Although I don't personally have heart disease, emoticon I do have high blood pressured which I take medication to control. I also have chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia that have kept me from exercising, but I'm here to change that! I've got over 100 pounds to lose and I am determined to do it. Thanks to all the help here at Spark People for the first time in a very long time I feel hope and I know I can do it.

Hi Everyone,
I don't have heart disease yet, but have a family history of it with both parents deceased due to heart failure. I just found this team today, after being with Spark for 4 years. Think this is the motivation I need to finally get serious about being more consistent with my exercise program and eating more healthy.

Hello everyone Key here from Nashville, Tn the oldest of 7 other siblings and 4 out of the 7 are two sets of twin boys. Yes my mother had two sets of twins back to back. There about 3yrs apart. I'm a college student who looks forward to graduating this May.

I'm here to learn more about heart health because i have PCOS which can lead to heart issues as I get older. Linda (the leader of this team) is a very active member on my team Hold the Chocolate! Thanks Linda. I look forward to meeting everyone and participating in this challenge!

Good morning everyone,

I'm almost 42 with a family history of heart disease. My mother had open heart surgery 2 years ago, and it hit me based on family history I'm doomed, so I better do something to minimize the situation as much as possible.

I'm looking forward to getting back on track as it's been a challenge for a few months.

Hey everyone!
I'm 39 yrs. old and living in San Francisco, Ca.. The reason I joined your team is that I have a family history of heart disease and lately I haven't really been paying attention to it. Going to the doctor though put all into perspective for me. So here I am and ready for the challenge

Hi everyone

I joined the team a few weeks ago and haven really done much here. I've been in a funk all winter and decided toda with the new month and new attitude has got to come with it.

I'm 39 yrs old and a little over 2 yrs ago at the age of 37 I had a heart attack. ALL my numbers were in the healthy range at the time of the heart attack...in fact I argued with the ambulance guys that something was wrong while in the back of the ambulance my BP was in the normal range (high for me) but in the what is said to be normal range. The EGG was even normal. I was having some serious pain. THe fact that I was talking and laughing at times they really werent taking me seriously.... who could blame them, but still. It took the blood work and it took the 2nd round of blood work to come back positive with the enzyme showing signs of the heart attack. Once in the hospital, they did treat me as a heart attack patient but still doc's had their doubts and they were talking to me about being discharged in a few hours LOL BUT after I had the heart cather done it showed 100% blockage with smaller clots thur-out the same artery. I now have one stent but I'm off all heart med's I only take daily aspirin. I seen a specialist in Feb. 2009 and he said I was just too young to be on Plavix the rest of my life. The specialist said he feels 100% that my heart attack was all due to stress. At the time of my heart attack, I had just recieved news that my sis-in-law had tested positive for pancreatic cancer. The news of that and the fact my nieces and newphew were going to grow up without their mom was just too much. I had already had done research on pancreatic cancer and knew if it came back positive she would only have a 5% chance of living and knowing how advance she was in all her signs..the 5% chance was even less. So on Nov. 20, 2007 she was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer and I suffered a heart attack. She passed away on Oct.14 2008. My eating habits at the time went from being okay to OMG I can't eat this I can only eat that. I walked the heart healthy line for a long time. This past year though. I feel into a depression and just didnt care anymore. I talked myself into going back to the old ways...after-all my heart attack wasn't caused by bad habits, but stress....with that going thur my head all the time...I fell back into old habits.

I know I have to still eat healthy because of this reason and that reason...As I turned that calendar today I told myself that today is my day to change my ways and change my attitude!!!

Thanks for listeing and sorry for the long read :(

I initially joined but signed myself up for too many groups at once. Now I am pairing it down to just my wii fit, ea active and heart group.

I got my blood work back from my cardiologist and my numbers have improved since I started watching what I eat and exercising.
Hi to all the new ones who have joined or come back.

total cholesterol = 194
HDL: 62 (the good stuff needs to be tad higher)
LDL: 104 ( needs to be about 70 my dr said)
triglycerides: 138 - he says these are good.

So I will be coming here regularly to keep a check on my heart and my mothers side of the family - except for her has heart disease. All 5 of us kids takes blood pressure medicine and I have 3 stents.
I want to be around to see my grandkids grow up so I need to take better care of myself.

Hi Everyone,
I just found this team and it looks so alive emoticon !
I just had my annual physical and left with cholesterol meds and another appointment in two months to see if I need to start BP meds...so I have upped the exercise and am really trying hard to stick with the quality nutrition. Joining this team looks like a wonderful addition to my plan. I wish every one well.

Hello everyone. My mother had a stroke at 60 and died of a heart attack at 67. My body type is just like hers, so I got a little nervous when I turned 60. I've been on high blood pressure meds and Lipitor, as well as Metformin for my diabetes. Finally I decided to attack the real problem and lose weight and get in better shape. I've lost 34 pounds so far and I know I'm healthier already. My Dad is 96 and never had heart problems at all, so at least half my genes are good!

Joining in late, but actually, I'm already challenging myself to get at least 30 minutes of heart healthy exercise 5 - 6 days/week and I'm working on stress reduction. Wish I'd seen this sooner! It looks like fun!

Hi I am Roxanne, 54 years old and had two battles with cancer in the last 10 years. I am trying to get off some of the meds I on for high blood pressure and HDL problems. I have already lost 19 lbs. but still have a long way to go. My doctors think this is a great way to work on the problems because of all the tools(recipe cal especially) I have available to me. I took in my printouts of my nutrition tracker and exercise tracker to my last doctor appt and it really helped he and I to see areas I needed to improve in, like adding a multi-vitamin.

Hi from Eau Claire,WI. I joined this challenge as I have had high blood pressure for years, as well as being overweight. My father has heart problems and high blood pressure. Both my grandfathers died of heart problems. The older I get the more concerned I get about my problems. So have finally gotten serious about it, and am working to improve my health. So happy I found this site.

I found this challenge due to the email blog I read. I worry alot about my poor little heart, now that I'm overweight. My father has had heart trouble, so I am concerned & trying to take steps to improve my health!

I am guessing "sticky topic" means you can just keep adding to it and don't have to start a new one every time??

Hi I'm Lee from FL. I had an aortic valve replacement in 1998 and a double coronary bypass 8 weeks ago. Am currently in my second week of Cardiac Rehab. This site intrigued me and this old dog CAN learn new tricks. Happy to be here (literally).

In 1995, at the age of 48, I had my first heart attack while attending a wedding shower for my daughter at our church. Like so many women with heart disease, I thought it was just stress and being so exhausted from a year of wedding prep. I ignored the pain, but went in to have things checked the next morning only because I'd promised a good friend that I would. My Dr. admitted me to the hospital straight from his office. I was the youngest patient on the floor, and nurses would check my ID and question me about my symptoms. Unfortunately many women are having heart attacks at younger and younger ages now, and age 48 is no longer considered abnormally young.
I am proud and blessed to have turned 63 last month! I've had 4 hospitalizations,3 heart attacks, and 6 stents. This has happened even though I've eaten "Heart Healthy" since the early 1980's. That was when my Mom had her first (of many) heart surgeries. Heredity has played a strong role in my struggle to fight this disease.
We HAVE to get the word out about Women's Heart Disease!! It SO often presents different symptoms than it does in men. I was blessed to have a Dr. that knew my family personally, so he recognized the risk when I walked into his office that day in June 1995. Any other Dr. would have given me an Rx for Valium and sent me out the door.
So YES! I'll wear my Red Dress on Friday...and give God the Glory that I'm still here to share with others about Heart Disease in Women!

I'm new. What is the challenge? (I'm computer challenged--does that count?) I read the blog by the woman who didn't want to face her heart disease, and decided I better not go down that path... I did 30 minutes on the EFX last night, and realized I really haven't done cardio in a long time--and I want to change that!

Hi Everybody!
I'm 34 years old and a single mom to two AMAZING teen boys. I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy (heart failure) over a year ago.
I'm now, oddly enough, the healthiest I've ever been in my life, the happiest too!!
Yesterday at the cardiologists office (you can read my blog for the details) he told me I had FIFTY more beautiful years here on this earth if I continued my lifestyle changes! I'M GOING TO DO JUST THAT. 2010 is the year of Christy!
I'm taking care of me (and my beautiful sons of course) first, for the first time ever.
I hope this team will help me with my goals!
Hugs and Good Vibes to all of you!!

Hiya Everyone!
I don't think I responded here and introduced myself.

I'm really up for this challenge; my Dad has major heart failure and had his first major heart attack when I was 3. 2 other major heart attacks, a whole ton of minor ones and a triple bypass later, and he's so ill!

I'm not looking at genetic heart problems - he smoked from being young (National Service - he's old enough for that - they gave you cigarettes to keep the morale up, and no one knew any better).
But I am severely disabled, and I don't get as much exercise as I'd like to, and I'm obese. So I'm trying to get my weight down for health reasons and to look and feel better.
And one of those major health reasons is my heart!!

Unfortunately I had a serious hip dislocation at the weekend, and I'm now stuck on crutches, in addition to my existing disability contraints!
No idea how I'm going to do this now!
I'll use my heart rate monitor and see what my heart gets up to in chair exercises.
I'm still getting back into exercise after months off because of surgery and ill health anyway, so I don't want to just jump in with hard cardio from the start anyway!
I'll just do my best!

Hi everyone, guess I never introduced myself. I like doing the monthly challenge, whatever it is, as there's always room to improve my fitness! No major weight loss goals here, just working off a few winter pounds in my running off-season.
Good luck everyone!

Hi - I'm Mary. I am a 56 year old mom and grandma. On BP drugs and will need to go on cholesterol drugs if I don't get that down too. Thanks for starting this challenge. It's been a while since I've been a part of one.

Thanks,
Mary

I will succeed. The only way I will fail is if I don't try.

Hi, I'm Tee. I'm a 61 year old wife, mother, grandmother and daughter as my father is still alive and well. Last year with the help of Sparkpeople I was able to lower my cholesterol enough to get off my medication. Now I'm hoping to do the same with my blood pressure medication. Good luck to all in the Healthy Heart Challenge.

Hi! I, like many others, just completed the January Boot Camp Challenge and am looking forward to another. All of my "vitals" are good....thank gosh because I am a good 50 - 70lbs overweight! Every time I go to the doctor and have blood work done I fear the results!! I do have a congenital heart problem that I always fear will become an issue if I do not get a grasp on my weight. I'm hoping to lose a minimum of 50lbs and become the Fit, Fabulous and Forty...ish (41) mom that I would like to be!!

Hello, My name is Sarah. I'm 30. I generally have good blood pressure, but last time I got blood work done, my cholesterol was on the high end of normal. My father has had some heart problems and the women on my mom's side have a family history of very very low blood pressure until they turn 40, then it is very very high. So, I figure getting on the heart health bandwagon sooner rather than later may save me all those meds and salt free diets later in life.

When I had my heart attack a week before my 55th birthday, I made a promise to myself. I promised myself that I would not be like my brother and stop following the healthy eating and exercise program once the initial fright wore off. Two years down the road I am finding it harder to continue with the healthy changes. I will use this challenge to help recommit myself to a healthy lifestyle. I definitely don't want a second heart attack!

Hi, my name is Sandy and I just finished up with the boot camp. I liked the daily challenge of exercises, I made no progress on the weight loss but maybe that was just a warm up and I will see real results this month.
