Hi everyone,

I'm new here, and live in Hayward. If anyone's looking for Sunday hiking partners, let me know!

Other details: I've got about 50 lbs to loose, love to play games, suck at sports (but probably would enjoy them anyway) and I'm a working single mom of two beautiful toddlers.

SKIRNIR - I love Hayward! Check it out.

My husband has just received a job offer in San Francisco, California, one of the tech companies. It is looked like he will accept the job, so we will probably be moving to San Fran, CA middle to late June. Would love to know where is a reasonably safe, easy to access public transportation, but not too hideously expensive housing in San Fran is. The housing looks so hideously expensive to me, as we are moving from TN and before that WI.

Hello S.F. Bay Area Members!

I live and work in San Jose. It's nice to see that this SparkTeam is still alive and kicking because it looks like the San Jose SparkTeam has become inactive. I joined SparkPeople last week and am following the Eat to Live Six-Week Plan about 90-95% of the time. I've been on that eating program for close to two weeks, and I can tell it's making a difference. The weight is starting to drop and my energy level is staying good throughout the day.

Right now I'm reading a couple of Dr. Daniel Amen's books on brain fitness, and what he says about keeping our brains fit is probably going to help me avoid junk food more than anything else that I've read or heard. Thank you, Dr. Amen!

We are having our annual Easter potluck breakfast at church tomorrow. I'm going to make a big batch of fruit smoothie (apples, bananas, frozen blueberries, water, unsweetened soy milk) as my offering for breakfast. That's mainly what I have for breakfast every morning, and it keeps me going until lunchtime. I may sneak a little spinach in the smoothie just to make it even healthier, and no one will be the wiser. Mwa ha ha!!

Happy Easter, Everyone! Wishing all of you on this team LOTS of ongoing determination to achieve whatever goals you have set for yourselves!!

~ Kitty M. ~

Hello, my name is Dana and I live in the South Bay. I think this area is great for outdoor activities and I'd really love to get back into that. I used to hike around Fremont Older and I can't wait to start hiking there again. Maybe this time I'll do it enough that I'll feel comfortable exploring other areas.

Hi Everyone!

I'm back in the Bay Area after living overseas for a few years. I was away from SparkPeople for a while as well. After more than a year and 10 extra pounds, I decided it was time to get back on the bandwagon.

I grew up in Florida and went to college in Pennsylvania. I moved to the Silicon Valley after college. Work took me to London for a few years, now I'm back.

I really missed the Bay Area while I was away. I used to live in the South Bay (for about 18 year), but now I'm in the City (for about 6 months). I used to do a lot of hiking and other outdoor activities. I didn't do much of that in London. Since I came back, I don't have a car, so I don't get out of the City much. I definitely do a lot more walking in SF (though not as much as in London)!

Cheers!
Ed

Hi Everyone! I'm new to the group. I've been living in the Bay Area since 2009. Went to Cal for 4 year and now living in Oakland. I'm here mostly to try to live a healthier lifestyle while losing some weight. I also want to work up to doing a 5k sometime this summer. It would be nice to hear from someone in a similar place.

Happy Monday!

Hello! I've been away from the team and SP for almost two years but as part of my New Year's resolution, I'm here to make some lifestyle changes. I'm doing Phase II South Beach and slowly getting back into exercise. I'm 55, happily married with three daughters 18 to 22 years of age. I'm retired Coast Guard and work part time as a gymnastics instructor in Vallejo and live in Benicia. Since coming back to SP on 1/3/2014 I've lost almost 19 lbs, am exercising at least four days a week and planning/cooking almost all our meals (with DH's help!) My whole family is thin and active. I'm the odd duck and want to change that. With your help, I know that will happen.

I'm currently doing a 30 lbs in four months challenge, thus the ticker. I really need to lose a total of 118 lbs to reach my goal weight. I needed the challenge to help me lose the first 10%.

Hello Bay Area! emoticon

Born, raised, residing, and love to eat all in the City (SF)! Growing up in the city you can't help but take advantage of that fast life working at an early age getting set on a career path and eating out!! This is my hustle and bustle! Now I am here with health problems, overweight, no time to live a full life, and to be honest no always the happiest. To top it off I just turned 30 and tired!! So I have made a commitment to walk the Embarcadero, the Mission, or somewhere in the city... take a few dance classes and most importantly change my eating habits! Cook at home bring my food to work and cook for my family and friends.. so maybe in this city where it is so easy to get plump and eat the good life with all the food options 2014 will be the year for me to live for myself and help anyone who wants it!

Good Morning and Happy Friday! I'm new to this team so I want to introduce myself. I'm so excited to have released weight and feeling so much better. I have a long term goal to release a lot of weight and step by step I believe I can do it. I enjoy water aerobics at the YMCA and love to dance. I'm single, live in Oakland and am open to encouragement and tips! THANKS!

FIRESPINNER, I am amazed that my own son has jumped on board with all of this. While I've been slipping healthier things into their meals (whole grains rather than white rice or potatoes, more salads, smoothies, etc) I have not taken away their crappy foods.

My son has really taken a liking to green smoothies (romaine or another green mixed with banana and berries, sometimes an orange or other fruit, and sometimes unsweetened almond milk) and now demands them daily. He and his best friend are now talking about nutrition constantly, and his friend keeps requesting more information from me, which is getting my son more excited... plus the fact that he's been the little bit of excess weight he was carrying.

Most of all he sees the wonderful changes happening to me, and has apparently been listening in when I watch documentaries, etc. Kids are pretty surprising creatures.

My downstairs neighbor ALSO noticed how good I'm looking after just a few days of this, and was asking me a lot of questions today, telling me she wants to start eating healthier and serving more veggies in her household. There is something magical about the nutritarian lifestyle.

FITMOM, I just saw read your post. I guess we *are* the new team! Those who lurk and read need to start typing so we can all support one another through this transition (or maintenance for those who've reached their health and weight goals). So lets all get to posting! Maybe I'll start a new topic to get things going....

Thanks for the info UZA! My cousin is making these same changes. I have talked to my kids about the changes that need to happen as far as the food we eat. My eldest is on board, but we all agree the little one needs some of the foods we won't be eating. So we are planning to hold each other accountable. Should be good.

Thanks for the warm welcome, FireSpinner (cool name btw).

You said, "I need some help with the food aspect"

Have you ever read "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman? It is very short and easy to read, available on Kindle and in any public library I am sure. He gives excellent nutritional advice and explanations backed up by referenced sources, medical studies, etc.

I hope I'm not being too presumptuous putting this out there, and this post is perhaps a little long-winded, but these are the things I've discovered on my own journey as I've gradually incorporated the Eat to Live principals into my own life. I am amazed at how much better I feel in such a short time. And it isn't difficult to do, at all.

First of all, I have had success in the past with a whole foods, plant-based diet such as he recommends, and am having success again now, but I regained everything I'd lost 20 years ago PLUS a whole lot more because I used a whole foods diet as a quick weight loss plan, instead of *making the shift* to a permanent whole-foods, plant-based lifestyle... which is what I fully intend to do now.

Because I want my HEALTH back, to the extent that's possible.

As I mentioned in my intro, I lost several pounds over the last three weeks, by simply upping the amount of fresh veggies--particularly leafy greens--that I consume, and gradually eliminating breads, pastas, and other processed foods. I've also cut way back on meat (poultry) and dairy.

Processed foods (particularly refined sugar and flours), butter and cheese are the worst things we can put into our bodies. I sincerely believe this, have lived this, and have witnessed this with others. The fact that troves of research backs up this belief is monumental.

My caloric intake has come down from ridiculously high amounts (probably well in excess of 4000 calories a day), to eating on average 1600-1800 calories a day. Painlessly. Eating more than ever before, because vegetables are so very low in calories! And it doesn't have to be tasteless, either. I love food, which has been my biggest stumbling block when I've attempted to "diet" in the past.

And I love eating this way.

Along these lines, I have discovered that tracking every single thing I'm eating has been invaluable to my success thus far. Little things add up quickly when it comes to processed foods and oils in particular. And dairy. That "one little tablespoon of butter" is 102 calories and 11.52 grams of fat, all by itself!

As compared to four cups of romaine, which has only 30 calories.

I've discovered that making green veggie-intense fruit smoothies, blended salads, and raw soups at least once a day is a great way to up the number of vegetables I'm able to consume, without spending all my time eating and/or preparing meals.

Since adding one blended meal a day, my cravings/weak moments have subsided drastically, and I'm able to go for several hours without feeling hungry again. The more good choices I make, the better I feel. And the better I feel, the easier it becomes to make good choices.

Example: My typical blended salad consists of 2 cloves of garlic, juice of 1/2 lemon, and 1T raw tahini for flavor, 1T flax seeds, 1/2 c. black beans, a head of romaine, a handful of spinach (or another dark, leafy green), half an avocado, half a cucumber, a roma tomato, a stalk of celery, 1/2 bell pepper, etc. Sometimes I throw in some fresh parsley and/or cilantro. And a dash of salt because that makes the difference of whether or not I'm able to drink it: In time, as my taste buds readjust, I will dispense with the salt. This is approximately 280 calories of veggies, and another 300 calories from beans, seeds, etc.

A total of 580 calories for a meal rich in nutrients, nothing harmful, that satisfies me for at least 4-5 hours!

There are some excellent documentaries available to watch for free online. Hulu.com offers Forks over Knives; The Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue; Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead; and other documentaries that can help educate you about food choices and transitioning to a healthier way of eating (namely whole foods, plant based). They also explain how and why the standard american diet is geared to make us fat and keep us fat.

Most of all, they are inspiring. MANY people have lost over 100 pounds in a year eating this way, and ended up in superior health, maintaining the weight loss indefinitely by continuing with a plant based diet even after they reached their weight goals.

Discovering a formula for eating that leaves me feeling satisfied and energized, as well as aiding in the healing process of the many problems that have developed over the years--that actually works!--has been hugely inspiring. And surprisingly I have come to love tracking my food... holding myself accountable, and seeing the progress I am making over time.

Aside from weight loss, these are the other perks I've noticed over the last couple of weeks:

* My skin is getting softer and younger looking, and is clearing up (I had a lot of blocked pores before)

* I wake up in the morning without an alarm clock, feeling refreshed and energized, ready to get started on my day. I've suffered from chronic fatigue for years, so this is huge!

* I also find myself choosing to turn off the television and go to sleep earlier (9pm, 10pm). Just because I feel like it. Not because I feel like I "should".

* My distended middle-age gut has shrunk back to proportion with the rest of my measurements (10 inches smaller than my hips again), as my intestines have cleared up from all the toxic sludge processed food and cheese deposited there over the years. Because of this one thing alone, I dropped two pants sizes and no longer need to wear elastic-waisted pants. I bought my first pair of regular-style jeans this weekend since 2007, when I started packing on massive amounts of weight in a short period of time.

* I rarely feel "ravenously hungry" anymore. And I don't crave pasta, bread, pizza, etc. Eating this way is extremely satisfying.

* I feel calm, less anxious and depressed. And more hopeful.

* I am getting back in touch with my body, and with my inner "me"... if that makes sense.

I will close by saying this: Dr Fuhrman's nutritional advice is sound, however he has become extremely commercialized and that irritates me. I am not by any means pushing his line of books or products. The only reason I mention his book, Eat to Live, is because it is such sound nutritional advice, and so well written and documented.

There are many other proponents of whole food, plant based nutritional lifestyle that have nothing to do with him: Harvey Diamond & Fit for Life, The McDougall Program, The Engine 2 Diet, etc. The more you read, the better informed you will become, and more empowered you will be to make good choices for yourself.

Hope that helps... if not you, then someone else. :)

Hi UZA! I've been here since late September and still going. I was so out of shape I started out by walking a half a mile two days a week. I added laps around the track every week or so. Now I do about 3 miles a day, 4-6 days a week. I actually like exercising now. I haven't lost much weight and I have more that 100 lb. to lose as well. I need some help with the food aspect. I have changed the way I eat......to an extent. Nobody said it would be easy, but I think it will be well worth it.

Hmm it does not look as if anyone is really posting in this forum anymore. Perhaps I'm wrong? Is there anybody out there?? Hello... it's 2013 now. Where is everyone?

Curious if there is anyone else in the SF Bay Area working on health &/or weight loss goals, as I think a local support network would be pretty stellar.

If it matters, I am a 47 yo grandmother, and have over 100 pounds to lose. Yes, I'm very out of shape and unhealthy. Due to a lot of "stuff" including health issues, I ended up gaining an insane amount of weight over the past few years. I've already dropped 30 pounds over the last couple of years, but find it's not happening fast enough for my health and sense of well-being.

Health is my agenda: Weight loss, in my case, is a necessary component of that objective. I am currently working on the Eat to Live nutritarian principals, striving to consume 90% unrefined, plant-based foods on a regular basis. I am not making a puritanical religion of it, but most days now I succeed in eating little to no processed foods or animal products, and my average sodium consumption is also down to less than 800mg a day (most days). Losing 14 pounds in the process of cleaning up my diet has been a nice perk.

My hope is that it is not too late to reverse much of the damage that neglect, abuse, and plain old-fashioned "giving up" has done to my body over they years so I can reclaim my life. Although chronic pain makes exercise difficult, I'm trying to walk at least a mile every day because I am serious about meeting my goals and completely transforming my all-around lifestyle. The old way of getting by is over and done with. Which is good, because it was killing me!

I've set course on an on-going journey of learning and experimenting in my search for optimal health. Anyone want to travel with me?

Happy to find this team I'm in Alameda county just a few miles from San Francisco so I think this team is a great ideal. I'm here to lose quite a few pounds fifty plus, I'm a member of Bally's total fitness gym which I don't visit much and I have equipment at home. My goal is to exercise the majority at home and to incorporate the gym back in my life a couple days a week until that's where I get the majority of my workout at. I also love to take longs walks outside at the local lake or marina or even around my neighborhood. I haven't done any of it enough though and that's the reason for the scale stalling.

I hope this team picks up though, because as many members as it has there doesn't seem to be that many current post here. Hope to see you posting soon. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hello all!
my name is Jessica and I recently started using Sparkpeople again. I just moved from Lake of the Ozarks, MO to the bay area. I am located near Vallejo, CA. Its been a challage and an adventure to get to cali but we (my boyfriend and I are doing this together) are ready to take on our next goal. We joined Planet Fitness this weekend and we are meeting with a trainer this afternoon! I love it there. The 30 minute express workout kicks my butt! We have been trying to meet some new people in the area as well since we are very new. Good luck everyone!

Hi all! I'm new to the team, but not new to Sparkpeople... I've fallen off the bandwagon several times now. Anyway, I am back on, recovered from two surgeries and am ready to go! We live in Castro Valley but do martial arts in Oakland.

Hi everyone. I am Terri and live in Richmond. (i know, i know, but its not as scary as it sounds). I am new to this group and this site. Just kind of learning the ropes here. I am not new to the weight loss journey, have been fighting with my weight for more years than I wish to count. It feels different this time, so I am taking that as a good sign!!!

Hi Toni, I wish you the best also. I'll have to look on the map to see where Vacaville is, I just moved here from Seattle in June and have not really ventured out very much. I added you as a friend, maybe we can support each other.

Looking for a buddy near Foster City or San Mateo CA.

Hello SF Bay Area Team. I am in San Mateo and walk at Seal Point Park if anyone wants to join me. I am doing to Paleo diet, I started 13 days ago. I meet a couple of people on Wednesdays, it helps me to get out there and walk when I have to meet someone. If you are the same way, lets help each other. :)

Hi Bay Area Team! How awesome that the SF Giants won the 2010 World Series and now the SF 49ers might be in the Super Bowl Play Offs? SF is so beautiful! I grew up in Walnut Creek, but now I live even further out, one hour away from the city, but I want to explore more! Goal one is to bike across the Golden Gate. Goal two is to check out Muir Woods. I have 15-20 pounds to lose and I want to get there this year! Wish me luck and back at you!

Welcome everyone :) Looks like we have had some more team leader changes, so I will do my best to accomodate. If anyone is an excited sparker and would ilke to join me as a co-leader let me know. You will have to be pretty active on sparkepeople, to help cover gaps when each of us may get busy! Like when I had finals this semester... But...... It is also a great way to stay on track, because it certainly brings me back to spark when I start to fall of the wagon!!! Welcome to the team!

Winters can be very wet. We had some isolated snow in the bay last year too! UIt was crazy, and not normal, so dont expect much of that! So, get some rain boots. That should prepare you just fine. Yes, rent is pricey. You can look on craigslist. But, you will want to be careful, if you go too cheap you could end up in a place that is not a good support for a college student. You want to have a bathroom in your room lol. I dont think that will be an issue with you though if you are a diligent searcher. Research, research. Your son should be good at that too! I am a college student also, I thought about going to SFSU. I am settling on transfering to a school in Oakland though, which is a neighboring city here in the Bay Area, you wil probably hear about it. If you want another local student, though not at the same school, to hook up with, you can contact me in sparkmail!

Hi. I live in Australia and have joined your team as I would love some
information about your beautiful area. My son has been accepted as
an International Exchange Student at SFSU for January next year.
I would appreciate any kind of information - weather in January; what
kind of winters do you have? We will be coming from the middle of an
Australian summer and don't really know what to expect. I'm not sure
about living arrangements - are rents expensive and where could I find
out this kind of information. I am hoping he can live on campus but I may
have to come with him to help him settle in.

I also need to lose weight and want any support I can get. emoticon

Hello. I am forty eight and living in the East Bay. My goal is to improve my health and lose some weight along the way. I currently walk and am doing the C25K program, although I don't plan to become a runner, per se. I like hiking and would love to build up to doing some longer treks around the Bay. It's great to live in an area where we can be otudoors all year round!

Hey there! I've been working to get healthier for three years now. I lost more than 70 pounds in my first 18 months then gained 20 back over the following year. In May I broke my ankle and have gained another 10 since then. So my goal now that I'm starting physical therapy and getting my mobility back is to lose the unwanted 30 that has returned and then 15 more pounds after that.

I live in San Francisco and I have really missed all my walks in the last four months - this town is so great on foot. I started rehab Monday and last night was my first time back at the YMCA and I feel kickass today thanks to all those great endorphins.

I'm excited to get & give support from other Bay Area folks as part of this team!

Hi neighbors. I am a 42 year old mom and wife. My kids are 16 and 19. I have lost quite a bit of weight, but do want to make that milestone number. More importantly, I want to become a runner. My goal is the inagural Tinker Bell Half Marathon in Jan 2012. Dublin is home, and where I work. I would love to find a local support system as I transition from a curvy couch potato to a lean runner.

Have a great Friday!

Hello there. I've been with Spark people since June and I just now found out that we have a Bay Area Team. I've lived in Sunnyvale for over 30 years and I am the proud Grandma of two adorable grandsons. Anybody work in Sunnyvale and want to start walking together?

hi everyone! i've been on sparkpeople for a few years, but i am moving to the bay area in august for work. i don't know anyone there, so i thought i would join the team to get some advice on living in the area and meet new friends!

my workplace will be in foster city. the company i work for is providing temporary housing for the first six months; i *think* this will be in san mateo, but i will find out more soon. anyways, if you have any suggestions on great areas to live once i transition to permanent housing, i would love to hear your thoughts! and after i move to the area in august, let me know if you would like to meet up or to gain an occasional walking/workout buddy.

Hello Bay Area Peeps! I joined SparkPeople about a week ago but haven't been good about logging on. So after this Easter weekend I know it's time to give this 100%. I am hoping to lose 15lbs by the end of the summer. I've gained 15 pounds since I first met my now husband 4 years ago (sound familiar?) He eats anything he wants and rarely healthy so it's hard for me when all that stuff is in the house. Plus I lost my job in August so I don't have the routine of bringing my lunch to work with me. Good luck to everyone. I love all your stories and inspirations. I know I'm not in this alone. :-) emoticon

hello everyone...this is day 1 for me on sparks and my goal is to lose 110lbs. by the end of 2011. i live in the oakland area and you can usually find me and my puppydog walking the park by the airport. my main motivation is to have better control over my diabetes and to stop putting my life on hold because of my limitations from being fat plus. i have made some good changes within the last 2 months, less sugar, junk and fried foods, but i still have a lot to learn and more to do. emoticon

Wow! Just joined this week and I'm pretty impressed with SparkPeople. I've been falling into a funk regarding my fitness this past year after losing my full-time job back in August and have been trying to get back into shape while job searching. My downfall has been eating out, having lots of snacks to make me feel better (temporarily) and not really understanding how many calories I'm actually taking in. With the nutritional information on this site, it's pretty clear that what I think is a normal serving is WAY OFF! emoticon I'm really looking forward to meeting my goals! Thanks, Melissa

Just noticed lots of Alameda people on here! Me too!

Hey everyone,
I'm Jacki. I'm 26, living in Alameda and looking to finally reach my goal weight by the end of the year! I would love to find some people to walk/jog/hike with near me. I would also be down to meet someone to just check in with and motivate each other by phone or email.

Hi everyone, I am a newbie to Sparkpeople and wanted to connect with your group. I have become disillusioned with WW and am now having trouble staying on track so decided to try something different. The new Point's Plus seems much too complicated. I am basically tired after three years about my whole life being about counting points. Can anyone out there relate?
