Hello SparkPeoples :)

My name is Becka and I've just hit my 6 year sparkversary. I've been using Spark on and off since 2007, with the past year being on myfitnesspal but I need a more thorough tracker and reporting system. I've lived in Ottawa for 12 years, married for 11, a mom for 6. I'm a photographer, a runner, a blogger. I'm a member of The Athletic Club (if anyone wants a class buddy I'm game!).

My goals and plans for this year are
Ottawa Race Weekend - Full Marathon (i may die)
Spartan Sprint
Color Run MTL
and a handful of other races through Somersault and the Running room

On top of my own goals, I'm currently helping my kiddo this year complete the 2 half marathon programs through Somersault as he's a little runner too :)

Hi, I've been off and on SparkPeople for years, but I've never used it to its full potential. Mainly I would just intermittently track my nutrition and/or fitness. Now, after a few months of overeating and largely sedentary living, I'm ready to make some changes. I need motivation and accountability.

I'm usually moderately active -- I walk about 6km a day, and have just gotten back into boxing once a week. I would love to train for a half marathon (running or walking, or a combination) in the spring and really want to start doing yoga.

Hi I'm Tanya and I'm back after falling off the wagon! :( Hopefully this time I can get back on track. I have a new significant other that has been a really big help in my goal to become thin and healthy but loves me no matter what.
We've been walking daily and gradually changing my eating habits!

I am not new to the team just back. I have returned to Spark People, went back to Good life actually attended a class and loved it, met some great people. Hi all! New-old member here, a couple years ago I was semi-active under the username TonRevenge, but now I am here ready to be WAY more active! I currently live in Gatineau with my husband, who works in downtown Ottawa. I spend a lot of time in his area as well as in the Carlington area (where my parents live) and Nepean, where my in-laws live. I am hoping to get a bicycle this year so I can take advantage of the amazing bike paths throughout the city!

Good Morning!
I am a wife and mother of two beautiful and active toddlers and am at the very begining of the journey to a (way) heathier lifestyle. I am originally from Cape Breton (then Guelph) but live in Orleans now.
Every time I have tried to lose weight, I have tried alone. Each time I failed. This time I will enlist a support group and hopefully that helps! I would love to chat with any and all of you about your journey and overcome our struggles together!

I'm an "oldtimer" on this team now but figured I can reintroduce myself.

I live in Richmond and run a B&B. Spark People has helped me learn to exercise regularly and be honest about what I eat. I have added in more vegetables and read labels now which has been a simple way to succeed. It's a journey. I have been able to have spark guests come to the B&B to exercise and eat well which has been a highlight for me every year. There are lots of spark teams but the Ottawa one allows us to meet up or go for a hike, complain or celebrate over the weather, and compare notes on groceries or exercise venues. I've made some good friends here. I also appreciate there are some excellent bloggers here, runners of local 5k, and people who have succeeded in their weight loss goals. Lots of reasons to be on this team!

Hello! My name's Heather & I just moved from the Maritimes to Ottawa to join my partner in November. He's got at least another 2.5 years on his PhD, so I'll be around for awhile. I'm in my late 20s and working on finishing my masters from a university out East.

I've been on SparkPeople for awhile, but my commitment & motivation keep slacking off, even with it always being somewhere in my mind. I am still trying to make those necessary good decisions, but consistency is something that I lack, even though I love healthy food and exercising. I have mainly worked out at GoodLife, but I find I have a hard time making myself go there alone, though when I have a friend going, I rarely say no.

In my downtown, I enjoy a bit of basic gaming, crafting (knitting, crocheting, a touch of embroidery, rug hooking, some sewing), cooking, dancing, reading.

Since I'm new to the area, I'd love to meet some new people!

My name is Christine (not that that was hard to guess from screen name) and we moved from Kingston to Ottawa on November 1. I think I have been on Spark for about a year now. I use the Fitness Tracker the most of its tools though I love wandering around on people's pages and especially love Before and After stories. Our new home is in Cumberland which is very close to where I grew up before moving to Kingston for a lifetime of work. I began running with Couch to 5 K and it is now my preferred cardio, but I do resistance training on the between days to ward off osteoporosis and aging generally. I am not going to go gentle!!!

If it's not hunger, food won't fix it.

Hi, I'm Alicia. I live in the downtown of Ottawa and am Vegan. I love walking with my hubby which we do every night after supper anywhere from 4 to 8km. As well, working out with the Wii and various DVDs. I am Vegan and am feeling great sticking to a plant-based diet. I work in the office of a local school and will be retiring from there in 2013. I want my health to be the best it can be before I retire and we move to southern Ontario to enjoy traveling and spending time in the area that I grew up in.

I have two grown daughters and a wonderful husband who will try all the vegan foods that I cook including stir-fry tofu. He is my biggest cheerleader when it comes to my goal of reaching a healthy weight by next summer and getting off blood-pressure meds. I actually got off the meds and now I want to bring my numbers to a good normal range. With my weight still up for my height my blood pressure is in the high normal but it seems to be coming down.

I am a huge lover of CFL and my team is the Hamilton TigerCats. I am so looking forward to the game tomorrow. I will be like the coach's daughter in Remember the Titans, but win or lose the Ti-Cats have had an awesome year.
Well, that is pretty much the high points.

Hello Everyone,
I am new to SparkPeople and am still getting used to all of the numerous support and knowledge areas that this community has to offer. Loosing weight in an online environment is new to me but I am really liking all that SparkPeople has to offer.

My son (12 yrs old) and I moved to Ottawa, from Toronto, in July of this year. I closed my Life Coaching practice in Toronto and am slowing building my Coaching practice from my home here in the Rockcliffe/New Edinburgh area of Ottawa.

I am doing my best to acclimatize myself to Ottawa but finding it very difficult. It's very different from Toronto. I have, however, found that Ottawa has many green spaces and lots of bike paths. I am a pack animal and I find that working from home is very isolating so I am struggling with all that comes with moving to a new location, not knowing anyone and working from home. That said, I was excited to hear about this group and hoping to connect with people here.

If anyone would like to meet for walks or get together to provide support for each other, send me a message, I'd love to hear from you.

Hello there,

My name is Yara. I am originally from Russia, but moved around the world for a while until settling down in the province of Quebec in 2003.

I recently got a job in Ottawa, so I stay in Ottawa during the week for work, but spend weekends in Montebello, Quebec. I am still looking for good physical activities to do in the evenings after work. I would like to learn how to dance, maybe BreakDance, or ballroom dance, or ballet. I would also like to do some Capoeira.

Recently I tried Bikram Hot Yoga class on Banks street. It was very challenging and inspiring. I will go back, but because it is so hard, I know I won't do it more than once a week.
Any suggestions for good activities in Ottawa?

Hi everyone,
My name is Chantal and I have been with Spark for at least 5 years (on and off) with a different name....I even created 2 spark teams ( a french one and a tour around the world one with minutes/miles counting as a virtual miles with touristic info of where we ended-up). I kind of lost motivation when people disengaged and I pooped out of it for a while. Sparkpeople was still on my mind all this time. I want to engage again because things have slowed down and I have a better feel of what I really want. I am glad to see that Sparkpeople changed alot and also that people from my region has discovered it. I'm happy to be able to join this team. Time to get back in the saddle and follow my dream.

Hello everyone! For the past 4 years Ottawa has been my new home town and just recently I became a Canadian Citizen :) In the past year I've gain 35lb due to stress at work and home that lead to a severe depression. I've registered with Sparkpeople a while back but never used it, only recently when looking for a good _getting_back_on_track_ book for my kindle I stumble over The Spark. Since I've been working on my depression I've decided to put myself at the top of my priorities and taking care of my health is back at the top of my list. I think this is the first time that I am honestly concentrating on health first, only looking at the weight loss as a bonus :)

Hello everyone I am like a bad penny you can never get rid of . I have been on and off this site for a couple of years now not really getting any where . Recently I decided to get some help with my weight due to the fact I am exercising regularly and watching what I eat and have lost the same five pounds over the last year at least 20 times . The Dr I am seeing explained to me that due to my shift work my hormones are out of whack and it makes losing weight difficult. He told me nurses/police officers are my most difficult clients . I live in Barrhaven and too have some limitations for exercise due to a ankle injury, but I regularly attend Greco classes but would love to have a walking partner or gym buddy, I also have a good life membership..

Hi! I'm new to this and just started yesterday. I live around the Manotick area but work all over the city as a real estate agent. Woke up last week and told myself I am NOT buying bigger clothes again (guess they really aren't shrinking in the dryer emoticon ) Hurt my knee badly in March and still don't have the diagnosis, so all I can do fitness wise right now is walk. Any dog people out there who like to go for walks with their pooches? I have two golden retreivers.

My confession? I am not from Ottawa but visit 3-4 times a year. I would very much like to retire there in a few years. It's a beautiful city and it feels like home every time I'm there. Coming up again from 6/29 to 7/10. I live in the southeastern part of Vermont USA and in total have 125 pounds to lose. I have been off and on Spark for the past 18 months and was part of this team before. Hope you will let me come back!
Looking forward to the Canada Day celebrations. We stay at the Lord Elgin right downtown. And......hudband and I are diehard Sens fans. Nice that the Bingos won the Calder!
Of all the lifestyle change programs I've ever tried SP is by far the best.
Nice to be back with SP!

I've been on SP since 2006 or 2007, but only just returned to Ottawa after studying and working abroad - and gaining weight as I went.
I'm in the area between Bayshore and Pinecrest.

Hello everyone!

I was looking to join WW or some other online group and then I remembered I had joined SparkPeople 3 years ago. Surprisingly, I remembered my username and passcode. :) My goals back then were to go from 135 down to 120. I had been at 184 and kept the weight off for 3 years and was looking for that little extra (and free!) push. I'm disappointed in myself to say that I am back up to 170... I don't know what happened, but here I am, motivated again... and clearly in need of support. So thanks to all my Ottawa Sparkpeeps, I'm glad you're out there. :)

Hello everyone!

I am far from new to this site (joined in 2006, when i was at my heaviest of 220lbs). However, i had all but forgotten about this site until last week!

My journey has been a long one, and although I am restarting(ish) at 190... I am at least pleased that i never made it back up to 220!

Currently ,I am a single mom of two kids, 3 and 5, and i live in the west end.

I hoping to make a home for my self on spark, I would really like to get comfortable and make my way down to 160lbs... and see where I stand from there :)

Hey everyone. I have been lurking in sparks for a couple of years now. I started off really strong, then got a job in the government and lost my 1 hour lunch ... boo hoo! Anyway, I am now back at it. I was at Kelsey's for lunch today with my husband and son and I saw a really big lady walking out side. Deep down I knew the answer, but I said to my husband, please tell me I am not that big and my son answered saying "yes Mom, she has a really big bum just like you!" Time to stop kidding myself and get back at it. I hope to be inspired by everyone and to some day return the favour!

Hi Everyone, This is my 2nd attempt at loosing weight in the past 2 years. All went fine the fist time but with all the event of last summer I gained all my weigh back by eating my emotions.

Welcome from Carleton Place. Maternity leaves can be great for getting back in shape or not. I had 3 kids and my first baby I was able to walk with a friend every day pushing strollers which was great. My second one always slept in in the morning so I could get in a workout before everyone was awake. The last one I had to walk with them to the park to count that as exercise. Any time I tried to do anything at home one of them would need something. It can be quite a challenge. Let us know how you are doing... glad you found spark people!

It sucks about having a broken toe.. so easily breaks again. I even found swimming would push on it. So I guess it is upper extremity for you for now. Can you walk distances if you wear good shoes? I have to say the SP strength training gave me some great exercises. The first change I noticed was shoulder definition. Loved that in the mirror and gave me confidence to wear strappy shirts in summer.

I live in rural West Carleton and work in Kanata. I have a six month old daughter and I'm currently on maternity leave. I am below pre-pregnancy weight...but still have 40-50lbs until I'm where I'd like to be.

I love exercise, but struggling a bit to fit it in!

hi everyone, I have been surfing the spark for several years now, joined in this group before as cosmo111, now back agaain with a new name, and new determination to get my weight off.

My name is Susan, I am 53. was a member when the group first met at Dows Lake - Im happy to see that group still connecting. I will join up with you soon - just as soon as my broken toe mends. I was doing great exercising, sometimes at GL sometimes on my own until two weeks ago when I stupidly stubbed my toe and broke it - no crutches or cast - just horribly inconvenienced.

Hello everyone I am so inspired by reading all your posts. I have battled my weight since I've been a child and have lost/gained successfully. I have learned by 30 years of dieting that its a healthy lifestyle and exercise which is going to get me to where I want to go. Being a shift worker I have found if extremely difficult to attend any weekly support group or meeting. I am 46 years old , live in the barrhaven area and would love to meet others who are challenged with their weight loss journey. emoticon

Oops...it would appear that I never introduced myself to the team. *lol*

I've been a member of SP since February 2006 and I go through phases where I'm heavily involved to hardly at all. In January 2010, I decided to give it another go...and fell off the wagon by March. After taking a couple of months to get myself sorted out in terms of head space, I am back with a vengeance. :D

I'm 31, currently not working full-time (I started selling Avon this month to bring in a bit of extra cash), and I'm planning on returning to school in January to pursue my Chef Training. I live in the west-end, near Lincoln Fields.

Looking forward to getting to know more of my fellow Ottawa Peeps. (Did I really just call you all "peeps"?! *lol*)

Hi Everyone -

Guess I better say hello, my name is Alicia although everyone knows me as Witchy. I have been on sparkpeople for quite awhile, first under WitchyGodmother and now under WitchyG. I dumped the first one in a fit of silliness and found I missed my friends here a lot more than I ever knew, so I came back. I also tried saying I didn't care about eating well or exercising or anything like that and my body actually said whoa. So, now I am back and trying to fill half my plate with veggies and meat and starch only a quarter each (I used to go months without eating veggies) Exercising because I love how I feel when I do. I saw my doctor this past week and she has given me 6 months to lower my cholestrol levels and weight in a serious effort (doesn't have to be at goal just a lot better) or she is going to put me on meds and I really truly hate taking pills. I am already on blood pressure meds which I resent but take (maybe I will be able to get off them eventually)

I work as an office admin but will be retiring in less than three years and so I am doing more and more writing and stuff on my website place so that I can do Witchy Godmother full time as a storyteller, card reader, fairy godmother and whatever else she grows into. I want to travel to festivals and spread my sparkles and well.... it is happening in amazing ways so I figure I better get healthy because I think I am going to be busy as Witchy.

Although I have been around quite awhile I actually had never looked for a hometown team and felt I should. I often have lots of pictures of Ottawa both on my webpage, 'like' page on facebook (Witchy Godmother is a public figure) and here on sparkpeople now I am looking forward to getting to know sparkpeople that live where I live.

Found Spark two years ago, but promised myself I would get more engaged once vacation was over. 49 years old, happily married for 26 years, two great kids in post-secondary school. I have worked in high-tech for 27 years. Originally from Nova Scotia - been in Ottawa for 13 years. Have always been big, but not always obese. Over the years have been between size 34-42, most often 38-40, but now 42. My son lost over 140lbs and is ripped, so I am using him as inspiration. My daughter lost 30+lbs and is the perfect size - so glad they both did not follow my path. I have lost as much as 60lbs before, and now need to do again simply for health reasons.

Nice to see so many Ottawains on this site. This is my second go around here. The first time I signed up with big plans and I did a fairly good job losing about 10 pounds in a month, before I lost all motivation. I live a pretty quiet life in Carleton Place and don't know any people that can work out with me, or relate to my goals, so it's nice to see neighbours on here with similar goals.

Hi everyone. I'm Kiki and I'm really new to all this. I am so ready to lose some of this weight so that I can start to be healthier again. I have developed health issues due to my weight and it has been a real motivator lately to get healthy again. I used to be really skinny in high school but then I put on weight after I started working downtown and never brought my lunch. Stupid I know. So I guess I should introduce myself! 3 Weeks in but I figured I would do it now that I have been stalking most SP blogs!
I am from Orleans, single mother of 2 and really just trying to get back in shape. I broke my ankle 2 years ago and put on 60 lbs since then...I was always a skinny girl so this weight gain is killing me...it's all relative I guess. Hello everyone,

My name is Michelle and I have been struggling with my weight all my life. I have tried again and again to lose weight and seem to fail everything. I was doing very well 2 years ago but then got ina car accident that has cause a lot of pain which has caused me to quit the gym and I got depressed.

I am still in lots of pain but have decided to try to lose this weight once and for all despite the lack of activity I can do. I keep telling myself - One day at a time but it's still hard. I have a wonderful husband who is supportive and that has helped me so much. He has bought me some equipment and built a home gym in the basement so I am hoping that will help.

I am looking for a buddy in the East end.....

Looking forward to reading and talking to others to see what they have to say and I am serious about losing this weight once and for all.....

Hello, I just joined spark today.. I've been struggling with the last 15 pounds or so since having my two kids (I've lost the rest, but the last 15 have stuck with me for a couple of years now!) I started running last September and it has helped me get active.. I'm very slow, but I still enjoy it and run at least 3-4 times a week in any weather (if there's anyone else out there as slow as me, I'd love a running buddy.. it takes me roughly 35 minutes to run 5K)

Now the last piece of the puzzle is to focus on healthy eating habits. I have a MEAN sweet tooth and its the main reason that I haven't lost any weight, despite my running. Even when I do focus on eating healthy and lose some of the weight, i go back to my old eating habits and gain it back. so I thought joining a support group online would help keep me motivated..

look forward to reading what others have to say and sticking to it this time!

Hi All,
Nice to see there are more Ottawian's than I thought!! I joined SP in November, and was doing exceptionally well, better than I ever expected, then just before X-mas, I hurt my back really bad, and could barely walk or sit, it seemed to take forever for me to get back to normal (almost 2 mths. I stopped exercising because I was worried I would make it worse, but I've been in physio for a few weeks now, and feel great!.
This week, I kicked it into full gear again, calorie counting the whole bit to start again, this time for good though.
A bit about me, it's been 8 months since I've had a cigarette! I am super excited about that, I can run up the stairs now, and still breath LOL. No kids, but I do have two fantastic little Jack Russell Terrier's who I absolutely adore, they are my life and my motivation (gotta keep up to them)
Can't wait to see the progress us rockin' Ottawian's can do!

Welcome new members! It is hard at first but I found doing a streak was really great in teaching me consistency. Small steps because it can be overwhelming. You will know when you are ready to move on to a new phase. The food tracker keeps me honest. Remember to go and edit your spark page to minimize the e-mails to the ones you really want to get!
