I agree. Not even my Charlotte born and bred husband has ever heard of lemon cucumber. I like going to farmer's markets and produce stands and asking them to show me something that I've never tried before.

Ooooh, I would love to try the lemon cucumber, I really love cucumbers. Just got done eating one, in fact. And we used to have a muscadine vine outside my house when I was growing up, I loved eating the grapes right off the vine. I am gonna have to find some of those!!

There is a really cool Farmers Market in Burnsville (above Asheville) on Saturdays. It is a small market- however, everything MUST be homegrown from the area. Last week I got a lemon cucumber. It was round like a lemon- but green and really tasted like a cucumber.

I went to the local Hillbilly Produce (yes, that's what it's called) today. I got a pound of muscadine and scuppernong grapes! Yes, they are back and they are in season! The lady said that she doesn't like to eat the skin, but I like it because the tart skin gives a contrasting taste to the sweet flesh inside of the skin.

Hope you got yours or will be getting some soon!

Hugs to you all. emoticon

A Sprite is like a miniature honeydew melon. Very mild flavor and flesh is very light - almost white. My husband and I share a Sprite.

I'm glad! I was hoping that by starting this thread that it would encourage those who stop by (even to take a look without commenting) to visit the farmer's market more often. Most of the produce is cheaper and healthier than what is in the store and, if by some chance, you find something new and different, let me know.

Hugs to you all. emoticon

Good afternoon everyone. My husband and I were talking about heirloom tomatoes. These are varying sizes and colors and he tells me that these are where all other tomatoes come from. Anyone ever seen or eaten these? I'm not sure if these are just indigenous to NC.

For those who have asked, a sun melon is a little like a honeydew, but the flesh is almost white and is not as sweet. A dinosaur egg is also known as a plumkot, a cross between a plumb and an apricot. Because it's outer skin is pink and speckled, it is often referred to as a dinosaur egg. It is also not as sweet as a plumb. What is a sprite?

I frequent both the farmer's market and the flea market on Friday night. Our Flea market sells produce from local Latino people. I find Mango's, papaya, green bananas , platains , figs to name a few there. I also go to a Asian Market in Greensboro for more Tropical produce and great Sushi items. Cheryl

My husband and I love to shop various farmer's markets to get in season produce and also to try new produce. A few weeks ago, I bought a sun melon and just a few days ago, I had a dinosaur egg. What new, different, or popular produce have you tried, or continue to buy, at your local farmer's market?
